  • Ive seen this question alot on the 2.5L Facebook Group and many have asked me too, what all is needed to boost the 2.5L and how much does it cost? I do my best to answer this for a Low Cost turbo set up. Recording was 40 minutes long so I had to split it into two videos lol.

      They may be right only because United Motorsports is the only company that offer turbo software via OBD flash. And they stopped really writing files after 2010 or so. But another option if you want good power is going standalone. ECUmasters has their EMUblack unit that you can have custom tuned using a harness built by Chris Beatty, and a stock motor with the right fuel and turbo set up can make over 400hp to the wheels.

      This is true. However some have went around that by either swapping to an electric steering rack and some VAGCOM coding, or cutting and welding a notch into the intake manifold and installing a custom bracket to move p/s pump over some.

    Sooooo what’s the verdict? This isn’t a budget build, this is a $4,000 build when your turbo is $800-$900 and a tune is $1200. Why would you want a turbo that is rated for 500 hp when your stock internals can’t hold more than 250 hp. Why set your goal on 14psi if the MAF is maxed out at 10-11 psi... what spark plugs are recommended and what’s the heat range? What’s the spark gap for 10-11psi on the 2.5? Does the rabbit have forged internals? Do they use the same rods? What are the costs for the intercooler and charge pipes? What diameter pipes? Im seeing a rabbit from far away but want to see a 2.5 turbo build up close and what you had to go through to make it all possible. What software is this $1200 tune and are there any mods to the ecu and are the any stand-alone options? If your still using the stock fuel pump, injectors, fuel rail and maf, why not just use a piggyback? The same way it takes practice to learn how to use a piggy back? Anyone who can tune can also tune with an intermediate tuner and the owner can learn how to operate it as well just like an electric boost controller. A 2010 rabbit can handle 18-22ish psi with a slightly bigger turbo or even s stock one but not recommended. You can get a rabbit to do more than a 2.5 for a fraction of the cost and wayyyyy less time and labor and def without a $1200 tune or $800 turbo. Just the thought of boosting a 2.5 your at $2k for 10-11 psi of (safe) boost when you can spend $500 on a rabbit for 20psi of (safe) boost. Even tho a rabbit is a little more exp than a 2.5, by the time your done dropping money on a 2.5, your way over the budget on what you could have gotten a rabbit for. Your driving experience with the 2.5 compared to the rabbit isn’t legit bcs you put better parts on the 2.5 vs stock rabbit. You put that same turbo on a rabbit with 18-20 psi and the same &1200 tune you’ll get better results.

    • @SubsurfacePodcast

      My man. There is no Rabbit in 2010. Rabbits exists (modern ones anyway) from 2006-2009. Then they released the MK7.5 GTI "Rabbit Edition" and they released it when I still worked for VW and I looked over the cars closely and to slap "Rabbit edition" on them was laughable because they are identical to a standard GTI. But anyway. You ALSO dont understand how boost pressure works when comparing turbo sizes. First off, 10 psi in a medium frame turbo vs 18 psi in a small ass k03 or k04 will NOT flow the same. Stock GTI turbos are very small and the 2.5L has such a great flowing head, a bigger turbo is needed. Not to mention you cant just use a GTI turbo on the 2.5L anyway as far as bolting it on goes. This Rabbit (2007) has a factory forged crank put the pistons and rods are not forged. With good tuning you can run 14, 16, 18 psi and more on these stock internals. It just depends on whether or not your fuel system is keeping up with it, depends on your elevation, fuel quality and local selection (91 vs 93) and more variables. This video was to give everyone an idea and keep it simple. You CAN boost these cars with stock internals, with stock MAF, stock fuel pump, upgraded injectors, a sufficient intercooler set up and legitimate tune. And trust me man....not just anyone can tune these 2.5Ls. Just because someone can mess with an electronic boost controller does NOT mean they can tune this motor lol. Look up the cam phasing lol. Thats what separates the real TUNERS from the guys who are dealers for tuning companies who think they can start tuning whatever comes through their door. Been there. Done that. Seen it on dozens of other 2.5 owners cars. Ive owned two 2.5s now. One N/A with full bolt ons and this one. Both tuned. Both were actually tuned by the same guy. Years apart. And ive spent the last 5 years or so studying the 2.5 specific pages without veering off into any other platform. Now, you tossed like 20 questions in your comment and its hard to hit them all but...yeah you mentioned these motors can only hold 250hp so why use a 500hp rated turbo. Thats because these engines can hold 350-400 WHP. Not 250. And Thats WHEEL. So a 500hp turbo (which is usually rated on an engine dyno or simply calculated based on flow) would be ideal so its not too small which would likely cause too aggressive of a torque curve, potentially bending the stock rods, as torque at the wheels should be no higher than 350 ft/lbs. But with the right boost control, you can sustain the power band and keep 350 wtq quite long and stretch the horsepower out to 7,500 rpms or more even exceeding 400 at the wheels. Stock head buy the way can rev 8,200 RPMs with no upgrades. Can the MK7 "Rabbit" do that? Can the MK7 sound as good as a boosted 2.5L? Normally sound is subjective but unfortunately in this case, NO ONE thinks a 2.0 TSI motor sounds better than an 07k. Also you mentioned why run 14 psi if the MAF maxes out at 10 psi? Well Thats because ProMafs exist. Spark plug gap for boost is around .024-.026 with NGK iridiums 1 heat range cooler than OEM. And the reason someone might want to spend thousands on boosting a 2.5L rather than getting into a car payment of $400-$500 a mont on top of outrageous mod prices from companies like APR....is simply because it feels WAY better to not be like everyone else.

    What does boosting the 2.5l get you? I've seen tons of videos on this subject and dyno stats but nothing on how that power boost transfers to the car through the ground. Does it hook up and drop your numbers or does it just burn your tires off? I have an 09 with only 69k on it. I run the IE power kit (manifold, CAI, and Stage 2 tune) and a Magnaflow exhaust and I can barely keep it from smoking the tires.

    • @SubsurfacePodcast
      @SubsurfacePodcast  10 місяців тому

      Tires make a world of a difference. The tires I used to spin with my stage 2 Jetta would be worthless on the boosted Rabbit. It all depends on the turbo setup, the suspension, tires and how you drive.
      Stiff rear suspension will help keep the front end from lifting which helps keep traction. They make lower control arm bushings for the front that are anti-lift which in a way have the same effect. 200 tread wear tires will grip very well with a boosted 2.5L but also if you have a small frame turbo and high boost it'll spin no matter what. If you have a medium frame to large frame turbo with some boost control where it doesn't smash peak boost right away, it'll help keep traction as well.

I've been going up there to blast the mountain roads on either my motorcycles (Ducati) or my VDubs for 35 years. My bunny is set up with sticky tires, currently Nitto NT01s, and full suspension mods, Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, H&R F&R sway bars and end links, ECS stage 3 aluminum control arms, R32 big brake kit and more. The engine mods I did were more for the torque increases than HP and speed. It's an 09 MK5 Rabbit and I've only got 69k on it, but I'd bet 50k of that has been on the mountain roads. It's only been driven up there twice. Most of the time I trailer it and my bike up although just 2 weeks ago when i was up there I bought a used tricked out Ducati 821 to leave. I should build a garage and leave the bunny to also as I rarely drive it here. I was just curious what the boosted 0-60 and 1/8 mile times were over stock.

      That depends on alot. Impossible to give an accurate answer. I can tell you on mine, if I drive normal, the miles per gallon are very good. Like stock maybe even better. But as soon as I start getting on it, the gas mileage is far worse than stock.

      For anyone who's considering using the automatic version for performance mods be aware there are valve body replacements for the automatic transmission which can handle up to 700 horsepower. Of course it would be wise to rebuild the transmission with performance parts like an upgraded clutch pack and installing a transmission cooler. At that point the 09G could handle performance driving easily. Like the original commentor said you should consider buying the standard version if 300+ horsepower is your range and you don't want to drop $2,500 on an upgraded valve body.

    • @SubsurfacePodcast
      @SubsurfacePodcast  3 роки тому +2

      There are plenty of 2.5s that are passed 200k and 300k miles on original timing system. Some early models (2005.5 - early 2007) had some timing issues which were revised so most of them are good now and everything from 2007 on had better parts so you really never have to worry about it.
      Factory oil change interval when I bought my 2010 Jetta brand new was every 10,000 miles with Castrol Edge 5w40 full synthetic. But I recommend changing it every 5,000 - 7,000 miles.

      Integrated Engineering and United Motorsports have the two best tunes. UM is known to be more aggressive and make more power, but IE is still good. Costs about the same. IE will send you a dongle to connect you laptop to the car so you can load the tune yourself, but the dongle costs extra. UM dosnt offer one but they have a network of dealers that offer UMs tune. Pop and crackle is a MK7 thing with all those people that don't want POWER. They just want to be heard. UM doesn't spend time writing tunes just to make noise. They are top notch and its honestly because they focus on performance. They don't do remote tuning like shipping a handheld device to you, but you can go to many shops around U.S. and Canada that are a part of UMs network of dealers. USP motorsports in Coral Springs, FL flashed me over with UM software. I believe they offer no-lift shift upon request. Not sure about 2-step or anti-lag

      @@mrrpm246246 there is one or two people who are reusing a Lamborghini Gallardo header on the 2.5 with starting in naturally aspirated form and they are planning on adding a turbo to the system. But these are people in the Porsche platform using 944 chassis. It does work with minor modification. I don't know how well that header flows compared to a specially designed header from Ice engine works, formerly known as Evolution tuning. The header from them is known to be the best exhaust upgrade for the 2.5L. As for the Holset, I'm not familiar with their turbos at all or whether it will fit but that definitely depends on the manifold used.

    • @SubsurfacePodcast
      @SubsurfacePodcast  2 роки тому

      Anyone who says it's not smart probably only knows of one person to have done it and they probably didn't do much right. Example, there are countless people out there who want a fast car but have ZERO intention of spending money. They don't care about quality. They just want pops n bangs...
      Boosting the 2.5L is far from a bad idea. I've been driving my boosted Rabbit for 2 years, beating on it all the time. As long as you have a good tune and don't exceed the engines limits (say over 400 wheel torque and 430+ whp) then you'll be fine. Of course it depends how you drive and care for the car. If you start it up and start hauling ass to work, getting into boost before the engine warms up, you'll run into problems. Letting it cool down for 1-2 full minutes after doing a few pulls. That sort of thing goes a long way. Also using quality fuel and oil.

      You can have either set up tuned. The tuning company I strongly recommend is United Motorsport. • @SubsurfacePodcast
      @SubsurfacePodcast  4 роки тому

      If you're staying N/A you'll never have to worry about the engine being unstable. The weak link is the transmission but that really depends on how you drive it. If you have electric power steering, you can get an aftermarket intake manifold and a good tune from United Motorsports or Integrated Engineering. Pair that with a good intake like Neuspeed P-flo or USP cold air intake, USP downpipe, high quality fuel (Top Tier 93 or 91 octane) which ever you have in your area, decent spark plugs like NGK nickel/copper, you'll see around 190hp at the wheels. The thing about how the 2.5 makes power is that with the aftermarket intake manifold, it makes power all the way up to 7,200 RPM. Just wants to keep pulling. So at that point GTIs can keep up because they die off around 5k RPM.
