I love the conversation in the beginning of this episode... it's so interesting, because you can see how they pick and choose what to believe based on their own priorities. Thorkell and his guys are norsemen... they're prideful, and these are guys who feel confident in their strength on the battlefield. it flatters their worldview to believe in gods who are strong, and have a bunch of legendary feats attached to their name. and it's complimentary to believe in Valhalla... a warrior's paradise, where all the best war boys go when they die with honor. this also suits the purposes of anyone who wants to raise a norse army... recruitment will never be an issue. these are men who don't fear death, because this expectation is built into their own personal mythology.
meanwhile, Canute and Ragnar make total sense as christians. they believe in a hierarchical god... a central figure with total power at the top, and the masses who worship him with awe and deference. this suits the purposes of a prince very well... it's the sort of loyalty that a prince or king would prefer to see shown to him by his subjects. that's why Ragnar says what he does, about how Thorkell runs from battlefield to battlefield, and how he doesn't know anything about the prince, or how he and Ragnar live. Valhalla is what you believe in when your fight is on a battlefield... god is what you believe in when your fight is in the royal courts.
compared to these, the priest saying his belief lies with whichever god made booze feels self serving... but they all are, aren't they? at least he's honest.
and that's the thing... when Thorkell returns Ragnar and Canute, he does it because he knows the truth about most men who become warriors. there's something basely immature in all of them. something that lashes out in anger when you insult their pride. if that sounds familiar, it should... it's what we've been seeing in Thorfinn since even before he left his village in Iceland. he's speaking to the parts of these men that are still children, who hit people when they're angry as a reflexive impulse. and Thorkell is also honest with himself. the concept of Valhalla and a warrior's death suits him, especially because he's so uniquely proficient at fighting. he's in his element here... like a child, he's playing. and he knows that these particular men will play with him. they're warriors, so regardless of what they say they believe... they will always give in to that gut-felt rage, before they'll listen to a mere person in a position of authority.
also, Askeladd is so immensely interesting because he's essentially got a strategic thinking man's brain, applied to a warrior's task. he understands the meta of the battlefield, and he knows to work smarter, not harder. and on that note, you gotta love Askeladd mentioning that he'd hate to die by burning because it'd be boring and painful, then immediately calling Thorfinn over and telling him to go into the fire. what a guy.
and then Askeladd saying that it's easy to make use of an idiot who isn't afraid of anything! like! yeah! that's exactly it... on a grand scale, that's exactly how this all works. warrior culture is nothing but this.
oh, and for as much as Bjorn credits Thorfinn's luck, it's actually his skill that's distinguished him, to the point where Thorkell was capable of figuring out who he was. Askeladd was the one who really got lucky by sending the exact right kid in to do this mission. Thorkell literally would not have responded to anyone else this way.

The priest is very wise. When asked by the Vikings, "Which god is greater, our gods or the Christian God?" he responded, "The one who made alcohol." In his mind, he was referring to Jesus Christ, who turned water into wine, but to the Vikings, it sounded like a mere drunkard's joke. As a result, the priest was able to maintain his faith without provoking the rough men who believed in Valhalla.
@@KafujiSato this is an interesting take, and I do like it... but this makes me wonder what the phrasing was in the original Japanese. in the subtitles, he says "whichever one made alcohol" which makes it sound like, to him, it doesn't matter who it was... either would be fine with him.
that said, I do want to emphasize that I _really_ like Willibard's character. I think he does have a lot of wisdom, whether this particular incident with him is a show of that or not. but I think right now, he's being characterized as a bit of a buffoon... or at least a struggling addict. and that's actually really cool! I like that what he eventually shares is so deeply important, and still comes from a genuinely humble and unexpected source. like, when he's picking his nose near the end of the episode while Ragnar is talking with Askeladd, I don't think that was a tactical move... but being improper like this doesn't discredit him when he's onto something.
basically, I think his characterization fits. I like that wisdom is allowed to come from a rough and unexpected place like that. the idea that worthwhile knowledge can still come from the mouth of a drunkard, and an imperfect representative of god's followers, feels right for his role in this story. and eventually, the observations he makes, and epiphanies he has, are crucial.
Vinland Saga just gets better from here! I can't wait to see the rest with you!

I honestly think "best girl Thorkell" caught on because it's a ridiculous nickname. Thorkell is a ridiculous character. It's just oddly fitting.

I don't know the true story behind it, but I always imagined that it's the fact that him and Canute first appeared in the same episode and when asked "by the best girl you mean Canute?", someone sarcastically answered "No, Thorkell".
@@franklynjackson7359 I think it's a Speedwagon type of situation, a fan favorite character that is somewhat ridiculous gets nicknamed that when the series has a lack of girls. Plus it started after this episode when Thorkell imitated a "maiden in love" so really he set himself up 😅
Askeladd did use Thorfinn again.
Small talk between Thorkell and Thorfinn was so exciting.
oh, and yeah, I gotta say... Thorkell is definitely best girl. there may be stiff competition in later parts of the show, but for this bit, he wins.
god I love Vinland Saga so much. it's the type of story where you really start to trust that you're in good hands with this particular author, and with the way this adaptation has been handled. even if this wasn't such a perfectly nail-on-the-head setting, I still think folks would be contending that this will be a favorite of yours, and singing it's praises, and recommending it a ton, because the writing _really_ stands out as something special.
the messages that Vinland Saga tackles are so important, and said with so much grace, care, and detail... it feels like a labor of love from Makoto Yukimura, the author of the manga. you don't write something like this without putting a piece of your own true heart into it.

But even his father called him as prince in previous episodes. There is no point in this if Canute was a girl. Overall "Canute is a girl" mystification doesn't make any sense
I'll let you in on the secret, because it's no longer a spoiler at this point and further confusion on your part would be counterproductive. The Prince is in fact Canute SON of King Sweyne of Denmark, and according to sources of the period was (paraphrased) "a beautiful man, with a face as beautiful as a woman".

All the characters in "Vinland Saga" are attractive. Before you know it, you'll empathize with each one and grow attached to them.

Ok, so if youre wondering why Thorkell is in the cart instead of on a horse like how Askeladd is when leading his men between battlefields, its because Thorkell was apparently known as being "too tall to ride a horse". What about Clydesdales and Shires, those big draft horses that pull heavy loads, you might ask. While many picture them as the horse of plate armored knights, fact is horses were also much smaller on average then. In fact, the oldest breed of draft horse in England first started to be bred in the 16th century. Shire and Clydesdale breeds didnt start occurring til after the 17th century.

6:35 This series mentions the idea of death and what comes after it many times, and in poetic fashion. There's one such scene in the manga that actually *scared* me in a visceral way that has never happened while reading a manga before--at least for me--and I think you'll appreciate that moment as much as I did when it's animated.

I'm actually surprised you've not heard of Canute before. I know he's not a major historical figure, but he was pretty important for Denmark and England at one point and of course there's the somewhat famous legend of Canute "commanding the tides to stop" (but we won't get into that here).
As a brit I expected you'd be familiar with him, but I guess maybe he's not part of the national curriculum nowadays because I'm pretty sure the first I heard about him was way back in school (like way, way back).
Vinland Saga doesn't have many comments, so I hope Luke notices me. What headphones do you have? And do you recommend these headphones for purchase?
P.S. Why do many people doubt the gender of Prince Canute if he is literally a historical character? Canute the Great. And we know exactly what gender he is.
