My grandfather died recently. My family and I were looking through the house taking out the most valuable things and family heirlooms and such before we do an estate sale. In my grandpa's drawer in his bedroom I found his old 1966 Omega Seamaster Chronograph. Immaculate condition as my grandfather was very classy and took care of everything wonderfully. I knew it was a nice watch, but didn't know quite how nice these are. Just curiously looked it up on a watch dealer and it came out at $4,000! I took it to my local Omega dealer and paid the big bucks for an authentic Omega Alligator leather band for it and clasp. VIOLA...I now have an extraordinarily beautiful watch and a great memory of my awesome grandfather. Such a cool deal. I will NEVER get rid of this watch.

I remember as a kid going through our storage in our big home and finding a very old watch that looks nothing like my Hi-Tech G-shocks, but something that an old man that plays Bingo would wear, and i remember it printed "Omega" on it with a shiny Omega emblem. And i just left it there cause why the heck would i wear this old mans watch that only tells the time and day?? (12 y/o kid thinking).
20 years later i come to my parents place (as a watch enthusiast this time) and ram through all the old storage in all of the unused rooms of the house, like a cocaine addict looking for a gram.
BOOM!... i find it! It's a beautiful, very well preserved 1970's Omega seamaster that my father got for his weddind from my mom's brother.
I had it restored and cleaned and is now working accurately like a charm!
For sure my favorite watch in my collection now!

Couldn't agree more, I used the vintage route to get my first watch in precious metal (yellow gold) and it was less than $1,000 for a 50s Omega. Amazing. Took me months to find the right one, pays to wait!

Thanks so much, Jory. As a low-budget collector, I started out my watch journey drooling at vintage ('50's and '60's Seamasters) and have just about given up from fear of getting cheated. You've inspired me to give them another look! I do SO love that classic Seamaster style.

Saw this video after I ordered a late 50s seamaster calendar (gold capped, white waffle dial, gold hands and spearhead markers, 503 movement, very clean, wonderful condition). Chuckled nervously and pressed play. Thankfully I seem to have done it all right and the seller has been AWESOME. Now I just have to play the waiting game for it to arrive. First vintage watch and first Omega.

The whole "You can get a lot of watch for not a lot of money because I paid only about $400 for this vintage Omega Seamaster" is kinda misleading because you got an incredible deal from a fellow watch collector who trusted you to continue to take care of his watch. That was a rare and incredible opportunity not very many people will ever be offered. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I've yet to find a vintage Omega in good condition for a similar price.

A lil secret.. If you find a non working vintage 70s and have a good watchmaker you can get some awesome deals since parts are plentiful. Ive bought some nonworking watches at a steal and paying $150-$250 for full servicing many cases you can be ahead. But as Tory said : DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!

Recently added an omega 265 to my collection. Found for me by a great company who, authenticated it &gave it a complete service .
It's in a UK, Dennison steel case & was produced in 1947; a beautifully designed simple timepiece.
It is exceptionally accurate; a lovely piece & the caliber 265 was an important one for omega from the 1930s thru to the sixties.

Another option is to look for vintage at an Omega or Rolex AD. They usually have some trade-ins and tend to service and provide an extended warranty. I have an AD that has several vintage Rolex and Omega’s they serviced for their lifetimes and know the person trading them in. Something to consider.....

What is the difference between a seamaster and geneve? Which one is better value?

    • @joshsmith7812
      @joshsmith7812 5 років тому +1

Well they're just different watches from Omega, it's like the same as a Rolex Submariner and a Rolex Datejust, they're just two different lines of watches from the same brand.
I would say in general the geneves are more dressy, there's some really cool vintage Geneves and Seamasters as well. Seamastwr are more dive watch oriented, but there's some vintage ones that are quite dressy. The modern Seamasters are all pretty much sports watches.
Both are really cool watches but look up different references and models from different years, past to present. As far as value for money goes, that depends on which one you like, though Seamasters are generally more popular and I personally feel like they can probably be sold easier.

I currently have my father's vintage Omega Seamaster on Ebay. I have not seen a Seamaster without the Seamaster name on the dial, as this one is. There is the typical back case with the embossed (?) logo on the back. There as been 1400 views, 66 watchers with 22 bids at this time. No one ask me any questions. I have not had a watchmaker remove the back case cover to view markings, etc.

In Belgium, it's easy to find a vintage automatic Omega (not automatic chronograph of course) in good condition for 300-400€ (350-450$) but Omega ask 600-800€ (700-900$) for the full maintenance...
The cost of maintenance is too much for old Omega's, if you buy a Omega's from the 90', it cost "only" 200-300€ (225-350$).
So if i must paid 900-1000€, i prefer buying a new Oris, Tissot, Hamilton, Alpina,...
I know that old Omega's are a part of watch history but the price for maintenance is crazy !
I love, new and old, Omega's but everything has a limit.
For example, my cousin has buy the first version of the Breitling Navitimer (automatic chronograph) for only 250€ (275$) and he paid 2500€ (2750$) for the full restoration (now she's like new with water resist test and warranty) but the watch cost 17500€ (19000€) now, so it's ok.
Sorry if i make some mistakes in my orthograph, i speak 4 languages so...
    Bye.

And the true nightmare is the servicing of the co-axial movement which Omega uses in most of its new automatic watches. Most watchmakers won't touch them and Omega charges a fortune to service them. So better to buy a vintage Omega from the late '50's or '60's but it is necessary to find a good watchmaker to service them and that can also be difficult.

    • @p.a.4928

@@roberto-juniorristuccia6911, I'm very late to respond but take a look at "www.cash-converter.be" on the web, sometimes they sells Omega's, Breitling's,... ... for under 1000€ for new models and 400€ - 600€ for old models with maintenance and 1 year warranty.
Today's, I just find a Omega constellation Lcd from 1978 on a "street market" for (15€ 🤑) and I searched about maintenance informations and restoration on UA-cam, so i saw my old post.
      Bye.

I really never thought that much about one before until I saw one in the metal, handled it and put it on. God its big at 50mm and weighs a ton and really is hypnotic to watch. Question if you have a second my friend.
About 35 years ago my father purchased a beautiful Seamaster quartz but soon after the battery went dead. He took it to a jeweler and had a new battery installed but a few days later it fogged up and stopped.
He took it to a watch repair shop and they said the jeweler had messed up the case and caseback.
It’s been sitting in a drawer for over 30 years now and still looks absolutely brand new…
If it was an automatic I would have already had it repaired for him but I know almost nothing about quartz movements, I’m under the assumption it’s completely toast.
The question is do you think it would be worth having someone take a second look and if so do you have anyone you would recommend?
Answer or not love the channel, thanks for the great content.

      Hey!
While the advice in this video would be prudent to follow when buying any vintage watch- the added “homework” necessary when buying a vintage Omega is paramount due to Omega’s hyper-consistent model production/model variations... not to mention the unfortunate propensity of counterfeits.
Simply put: Few companies have made as many random variations of the same watch as Omega has.

I have a beautiful Omega Seamaster Cosmo 2000. Incredible dial. Beautiful green. Great condition... BUT... It needs servicing and the bracelet repaired (just a broke pin) and so it is off to Switzerland for around $NZD1,500-$NZD2,000. Just factor in the potential servicing of a vintage watch. It cost me about $NZD1,200 (say $USD765) to buy, but will soon be a $NZD3,000 watch ($USD1,900) to be running properly. Still worth it in my opinion. The Omega service will also replace parts and finish it to a 'new' standard.

Is that automatic an Omega with reference ST 366.0848? If so, I'm wearing one right now :-) I love the watch for how light it is and the tonneau case with domed glass. The 1020 movement has however the reputation for being flimsy and I don't want to know how much it will cost to service it (as discussed below).

Hello, the Omega Seamaster of this video, what is the measurements of this watch? I recently bought an Omega Seamaster Day-date and it looks tiny in comparison with your watch. Mine is 35 mm without the crown. Thanks in advance.

I got that same model the seamaster 1020 but the dial is black. It’s a great watch, and you are right about the price. I spent 400 on mine.

  • @tunokies

Like one of the previous comments says - factor in the cost of a service. About £200 for a 3 hand with day date. There's no need to send it to Omega and pay their servicing costs as any competent watchmaker will tell you they are great to work on. BTW, if you see one for sale as 'serviced' get them to send you a picture or 2 of it in the picture along with the readout from the timing machine they use. The majority of watchmakers will have such a machine (there are different types) check out Mark from Long Island Watches UA-cam watch and learn to understand what the readout should show.

Get the 1963. You already have a very solid diver with the SRP641... so why not add a chronograph to your collection! Cheers! Let me know which one you choose!

Vintage Omega can be dangerous ground with so many repainted and redials out there. Also, make sure you ask for movement photos because I have seen a lot of Omegas that are running and have clean exteriors but under the case back is a movement that looks like it was dragged through a week-old salad bar.
