    I’m a big fan of the integrated bracelet Omegas. There’s just something so retro and 70s about them. The movements did get skimped on, but I sell these frequently, there is demand for them.

      These movements tense to have the following issues: the power reserve is not consistent, calendar parts are not well design and normally broken if not properly lubricated, design of movement is not attractive and looks cheaply made, a few parts are made of plastic, and so forth. That said, the model design that majority of these calibers go into are not desirable and look like a cheap watch. Hence, it is not always about the movement that is the concern.

    Dad had a broken seamaster de ville late 1960s, not sure if it falls into your category but I had no issue with my local jeweler replacing the strap. The Crystal did take about a year to track down since that and the crown were broken and needed to be replaced, but given it was my dad's watch, and was verified as authentic by a master watchsmith it was worth it imho.

    I would agree with most of what you said but would make an exception for the 1012 movement. It is a robust movement andI have noticed a climb in value in some watches with this movement, for example the ref. 166.0163. Keep up the good work.

      I am unsure what is the main reason for a collector to dislike the 1010-2022 calibers. Myself (watchmaker) on the other hands, I dislike that Omega used plastic for the calendar parts, and can have setting issue with improper lubrication causing the teeth to break off on the date corrector lever. But, the main thing that I want to point out are the case lug design on these models. Warn people in advance that if they ever need a bracelet replacement that only the original bracelet will work.

      @Texas Faggot I believe many of these bracelets are obsolete now. My point is, if the watch is an heirloom or sentimental (given as a gift or already purchased years ago) then it is worth sending it back to Omega to have a new bracelet replaced. But if you are going to buy one of these watches soon, it is good to have second thoughts as the bracelet replacement (if Omega still supplies them) will cost way more than the watch itself. Omega used to sell original BOR bracelets back in the early 2000s but has stopped.

  • @eurovnik
    @eurovnik Рік тому

    A few thoughts. I wouldn't say "avoid these watches" rather "be aware of some of the potential pitfalls of owning them". I think your video actually does a great job of explaining the pitfalls despite the title.
    1. If a buyer's intention is to just enjoy the watch rather than realise an investment, my view is that the stigma associated with 1000 series movements means that there are bargains to be had. Especially for the later movements in the series like the 1012 where omega fixed the teething troubles.
    2. Agreed on the square crystals being challenging to replace. That applies to most other vintage square watches.
    3. Any vintage watch with an integrated bracelet design presents a problem if the bracelet fails, not just these Omegas. Equally if you want a genuine 70s integrated bracelet design the Omrga Geneves are great value. I have one that I bought and serviced for much less than a modern Tissot PRX. Personally I love having an authentic vintage 70s watch for less than a modern knock-off.

      @TimelessHistoryChannel  Рік тому

      Wow! Fantastic stuff, and thank you for the comment!
      I used to restore watches for people. Whenever someone tells me that they bought a vintage Omega for a super deal but may need a new bracelet, I instantly guess they must have purchased one of these Omegas with the integrated bracelet, and I am usually correct. The crystal is a problem, but 50% of the time, I can still order a GS crystal of the right size to replace the old one. Movement-wise, I know many collectors dislike the 10## series calibres; however, I feel that if the service job is done right, the movement will perform accurately and without any issues. When a watchmaker service a 1000 series calibre and skip the lubrication step of the cannon pinion (which is attached to the center wheel but looks like one piece), setting the time will break the teeth off the minute or the star-shaped setting wheel.

      @@TimelessHistoryChannel Thanks so much for the reply and detailed advice. I will definitely highlight those points to my watchmaker when I get a 10## series serviced. My Genève currently has an Omega crystal with micro engraving over the centre and is in pretty good shape thankfully, but I will try and get hold of a suitable GS one to have "in stock" for when it needs replacing - great tip. Keep up the great work with the channel!

    Good points all around. One solution for those with the unique case lugs if stainless steel (not gold or similar plated) a competent watchmaker with machinist capability can machine the lugs out to 20mm or similar standard width which would completely eliminate that problem. True, no longer original, but this could actually increase the value if done well since the original case is less desirable due to the lug design.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for sharing. But any alternation or modification to the case will hurt the watch’s authenticity and value a whole lot.

    I have an Omega Geneve from 1972. It was my father's wedding watch, so I restored it spending a lot more money than the watch is worth because of the nostalgic value. The problem is that I'm deathly afraid to wear it because of the bracelet issue. The watchmaker who restored the watch told me that the watch is great, but you'll never be able to replace the watch band should it break. Therefore, the beautiful watch sits in my watch case seeing all the other watches go out for a day or two at a time. I assume I'll hold on to it until I can figure out a way to replace the band should the original break.

    Dear Omega Enthusiast.
    I like your chanel and I like Omega watches. It took me a few videos to appreciate your style but being open minded helped me overcome my own bias and recognise your expertise and intention.
    On this one topic I do rather disagree, just a little. The Omega Constellation 168.059 ist a fantastic timepiece. I have two.
    It was one of Omegas top of the line watches at the time and also available in 18k.
    In years to come it may turn out to be a very valuable collection piece.
    It is not possible to mess with it too much. Case and bracelet are unique. Movements are a different subject maybe, although the 1000 series aren't as bad as people like to make out.
    At no time in past decades were all models good collection pieces and I find the 1970s to be no different.
    Taste is very subjective.
    I am a 1940s - 1970s guy but you have to know what you like.
    Thanks for the great content.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  2 роки тому

      Thank you for the comment.
      I pointed out to inform people to avoid these watches not because they are terrible to own but to reconsider future needs for replacement parts can be an issue. I have worked on several 168.059, and the watch works like a charm with proper lubrication. I am a watchmaker specializing in restoring vintage Omega watches, so I know the proper method and steps to service a 10## series movement. In one of my comment replies (not sure, from this video) with a viewer, I pointed out how great the 10## series is while he denies it. But if you really want to compare with, let's say, a calibre 565 movement, the quality that Omega put into building a 10## movement is not comparable to a 565 calibre. I don't think you're a watchmaker, but if you are and have worked on both of these movement series, you'll be able to see the quality difference. This is also why Omega shared their 10## calibre with their lower-end sister company Tissot under calibre 2930. The watchmaker unfamiliar with the 10## series calibre usually ended up damaging the date system as the parts are very fragile. 168.059 is a great-looking TV watch, but the bracelet and crystal are unique. The bracelet is obsolete, and the crystal can only be installed by Omega. They are completely sold out at local supply houses. These are just some reasons why this constellation will cost much less than older models. I can continue and turn this into an essay, but I won't. haha. At the end of the day, enjoy what you have already owned and cherish every moment with it. You should feel fortunate to own a vintage Omega watch.

      @@TimelessHistoryChannel thanks for your speedy response. I have watched a few of your videos and I know that you are a watchmaker and that is why I continue to watch. Too many people just don't have the knowledge and I like your take on vintage Omega.
      I've seen quite a few movements on different watches myself, and the older Omega calibres are indeed on a different level of finishing.
      I have a very nice seamaster deville 166.020 and I know what you mean. I also have a 1930s 26.5 sob t2. A calibre 861 chrono.
      The 1000 series was for the new times approaching. More innovation, just technical and less decorative.
      The big Q was threatening.
      Parts for vintage can be a challenge even on models that are less unique. The original Crown for the 166.020 for example. Not the service replacement.
      But I'm sure you are aware of the charms of loving vintage. Or universal geneve is also a good one...
      Anyway great getting to know you and I really like what you do. Young guys getting into the hobby can take your advice and maybe miss a dud or two.

      @@oliverselle2861 You're very welcome.
      Parts can be a big issue for many watchmakers and collectors. But, honestly, I do not have an issue when it comes to Omega parts. This is why my Omega watches come with a year warranty, and when that has expired, it will only cost $100 plus shipping each time you return it for a regular maintenance service. That said, a good watchmaker seldom will break or require a part.
      UG parts, along with many other brands out there, parts will be a challenge for me to locate. You'll need to look for a watchmaker who has been servicing UG for a long time.

      The quality of all 1XXX series calibres is not comparable to older calibres. Make sure you know a reliable watchmaker who is familiar with this type of movement, as they are prone to having issues, especially with the calendar part of the watch. Because of their low quality and prone to issues, it makes the watch a lot less expensive to buy as well.

    I know only one bad Omega automatic movement. This is this one, which is shared with Tissot and Lanco. In Omega it has a copper color, in Tissot is bicolor nickel/gold and in Lanco only nickel plated and without fine regulator. Calendar in this movement is really bad

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel

      That's correct. And the reason why is a lot of time people missed the important lubrication on this watch. And since the calendar feature is very sensitive, that one gear will break a few teeth.

      Honestly, it is not always about the movement. If the watch was well taken care of, you shouldn't need to worry too much about the movement. But my concern is the bracelet type. If you damage it accidentally or for whatever reason it breaks, you're going to be in trouble looking for a replacement.

    • @TimelessHistoryChannel
      @TimelessHistoryChannel  4 роки тому +1

      Best to stay away from these tuning fork and other quartz models. They not only take special mercury obsolete batteries, but parts are obsolete as well. Unless, you know of a watch maker who still work on these watches and have a good inventory of their parts then feel free to collect them.
      For your information, tuning fork movement can only be properly regulated if you have a phasing machine such as one used to regulate Accutron watches. You can do it manually, but it will never be close to perfect. The phasing timing machine can get the timing to be decimal of a second off. About the battery, yes, you can use modern day 1.5v lithium battery, but they only last for a few months and not the very best for these movements due to their higher voltage. Stick to Renata brand battery.

    Funny that I bought an Omega that looks the same as the one you pictured that has disappointed me. For one thing there's no way to move the day part. Then they used an awkward back casing. You pretty much gonna stab yourself trying to remove it. Then the crown wheel busted off with little amount of force. It has no positive feel when winding it up. It does look nice though, the only point worth giving. So anyway I built up a collection of older omegas fro a 1927 pocket watch to 2 from 1940's one gold to a number of 60's mods that are the peak of the movements, 562 as I remember but please the 70's trash I would avoid. 😀
