    You should add Anti-Drain Back valve performance to your testing procedure, which is crucial to prevent dry starts. Maybe by installing the filter base upside down and test how much oil, if any, drains back the inlet after a period of time, or reverse flowing the filter to see if any oil gets past the valve.

    $40-90k for a vehicle and your going to cheap out on one of the most critical parts of your engine to save 5-10 bucks every 6 months!!? Change the oil every 5000 miles and use HIGH quality oil and filters is very cheap insurance. Use your brain people...

      Oil filters aren’t as important as people think.
      Aircraft engines used screens till the late 70’s.
      The oil filter didn’t raise the TBO, time before overhaul.

    • @Owensti
      @Owensti 2 місяці тому +1

      Every 5k miles? Maybe for some vehicles. But for me I change my oil every 2500k miles. Then again I’ve spent so much money on my engine I just want the best lubrication and filtration for the motor to keep it happy.

    • @KeterMalkuth
      @KeterMalkuth 11 днів тому

      @@OwenstiHow the vehicle is being used makes a difference. My car is just a cheap enough daily driver. I put a lot of miles on it because I've got a 120 mile daily commute, but it's all steady speed driving on long country back roads, so the oil has plenty of time to circulate the engine between startups and isn't necessarily getting that much load, and in addition, with how many miles I'm driving I can't afford to change my oil every 2500; that'd be once every month and a half.

    • @Owensti
      @Owensti 11 днів тому

      Yes I also agree. My car is a performance vehicle so that is also a factor on why I change it frequently. If I were you I’d investigate in some higher viscosity oil for your car that would probably last longer and won’t burn as fast. Also keep in mind if you are in a colder climate state I wouldn’t recommend it.

    Wix, Mann and Puralator are all made by Mann Hummel. But the design of the filters and build locations of the filters are changing. I literally have three filters with the same part #, all Wix filters that are totally different. One is the old Wix I'm used to with the seven round holes "made in the USA". One that looks like a euro Mann Hummel filter with 5 holes half covered by a metal ring " made in China" and one that looks like a Puralator filter with 7 oval holes "made in USA" Things are getting confusing right now with Mann Hummel's product line.
    Going to go with the Boss filters from now on until I see change in build design and or build location. Please keep updating you findings ..... Mann Hummel seems to be in a state of change at the moment with their production design and production facility locations.

    Thank you for reviewing the filter I requested (STP XL). While I've been using them with no issues and the oil looks fairly clean after a 5k mile change interval, now I'm likely going to spend the extra couple bucks per change going with the Purolator Boss because it *still* appears to be the top performer overall.

    Love these videos! You're one of only 2 people I've seen do actual scientific research on oil filters, keep up the great work!
    You should definitely test the FRAM Titanium from Advanced Auto Parts next. A guy from Ascent Filtration did an ISO 4548-12 Oil Filter Lab Testing Comparison using professional equipment, and the old FRAM Ultra got hands down the best filtration results of an oil filter I've seen. Luckily, FRAM didn't abolish this amazing filter and they instead rebranded it as the Titanium with the exact same design as the old Ultra. By comparing and contrasting the data from both you and Ascent Filtration, in comparison to the new FRAM Ultra that you tested, the Titanium should have better DP, slightly worse capacity, and his test showed 99% filtration at 15 microns. If there's any filter that can take the crown from the Purolator Boss, it's the FRAM Titanium!

    • @CL-yp1bs
      @CL-yp1bs 2 місяці тому

      They did abolish the filter. Titaniums on the Advanced Auto Parts shelf are old stock. New Titaniums have the new design just like Fram Ultra. Still plenty good though.

    You guys kick ass! Excellent video. I also watched your other oil filter test. Good watch!
    It seems to me, obviously use quality oil, the correct viscosity oil provided by one's owner's manual, and a good quality oil filter, it is most important to change that oil frequently. I feel it is important to go above and beyond the manufacturer's 10,000 miles interval. I personally change my engine oil and filters at 5,000 miles, even though Toyota states less frequency or 10,000 miles. I feel clean quality oil is an inexpensive insurance policy for a long trouble-free engine life. However, that's my opinion. After the purchase of a brand-new vehicle, I do my first oil and filter change at less than 1,000. Then go to my "normal 5,000 miles increments on the odometer" oil change frequency from then on. Every 5,000 miles is easy to remember by looking at my odometer. 5, 10, 15, etc...

    One concern I have about your testing method for checking how much the filter isn't filtering is that some of these filters can contain much more before reaching the stopping point on flow rate. Are you taking measurements at specific intervals after adding a measured total of dust or after it maxes out on capacity? If it's the latter then any filters which hold less before reaching max psi will have a bias.

      Hey! Thank you so much for supporting us since the beginning! Much appreciated. Yeah, we went through many iteration trying to build a rig that looked pleasant and at the same time fit in a wall that would frame well for the video. We tried several hoses also and some broke. You all get to see the end result but it was quite a bit of work to get this all working. That ball valve was actually quite necessary to control the flow rate, so we can do our hot and cold flow tests. Yeah we could've just linked the hose but then you'd see one of us linking the hose for. Awhile while we read a stabilized result. We want to always be transparent and show you everything so we used the ball valve so you could see how the flow changes on the flow meter on the right as we actuate the ball valve going upstream to the catch can. Again, thank you so much for all your support and feedback!

    looking at the final graph, it seems that filters with the least efficiency in filtering (redundance sorry) have the best flow and capacity, and the same goes the other way, the filters with the better media have decreased flow and capacity...

    I really want to see an OEM Subaru filter. There is so much controversy surrounding the OEM Subaru filter being so good and having the “right bypass pressure”. I’d like to see it proven or disproven. I personally believe the high bypass pressure is due to the poor filter media flow rate, not special oil system needs of the Subaru engines.

    Wouldn't it be more applicable to perform the particle count test using the same amount of aluminum powder absorbed into each filter system? The Baldwin absorved twice as much powder as the other filters so there was more in the system that could potentially be dispensed into the sample.

    Not surprising the STP has the best filtration and the most restriction. Although how it lets more larger parts through that the WIX yet catches 50% more of the smaller particles is strange. Hard to explain that one.

    Baldwin shows that BT223 to Absolute at 40micron. I believe BX 75 if IIRC. Thats not that good but Baldwin filters vary a great deal I;m assuming based on the OEM spec they originally made the filter for.
    I have a dodge with a Baldwin that is BX75 at 30 micron
    My wifes car Chevy has a Baldwin that is BX75 at 27 micron
    Bx75 is 98.7% removal of all particle sizes from the oil filter testing
    Their specs vary considerably depending on what manufacturer they are making the filter for

    Hold on, I'm not an engineer, but I do have a 132 IQ... logic tells me, that if the pressure resistance while cold, doesn't ruin the engine, then ANY of these filters, regardless of the flow, will be just fine at lubricating the engine while warm temperatures (like in Texas), because even the worst filter here has a better flow rate than the best filter here, when it's cold. So really the flow rate while warm, doesn't really matter.

    • @briantayes2418
      @briantayes2418 11 днів тому

      I was thinking that too. If you are changing your oil every 5000Kms, then the filter capacity is not important, leaving filtering as the only important factor.

      @@BrandRanks I found it, thanks for the heads up! If I might, could I suggest perhaps listing future comparisons with the best tested, and cheapest tested? Maybe with a link to a list of up to date test results? Seeing my money was well spent on my own cars that I really like is nice to know, but it'd be neat to know how big the gap is between them to better weigh value, you know? Maybe you want to recommend a minimum to a friend or family member more budget conscious, or less demanding with mileage or the right foot. I feel like it's a useful yardstick for a lot of people.

    Kind of what logic would dictate......... A filter with better flow will allow more particles to pass. Only way to combat that is to use more restrictive media, BUT to add lots more media to make up for the flow rate.
