Seriously guys, the particles that these performance filters don't filter out, are smaller than the average surface roughness value of a cross-hatch on a cilynder wall. Any particle that size that enters the combustion chamber is either burnt away, spit back out our disappears into the oil.

Where is the standard stock filter ?

I’m in a debate with a friend. I have consistently used the largest filter I can fit on my power equipment. I make sure the specs are the same from the oem filter. He says I’m damaging the engine due to pressure loss because of the larger filter. I call bs. I have to add more oil due to the filter size. Fill it till is full on the stick and run it. Turn it off and wait. Check and add if necessary. What are your thoughts?

They are all made out of the same stuff made in China and then assembled in the USA so they can say made on America. 😂😂

Have you tested the S&B vs. the K&N? It seems the SB has a better-enclosed design on their CAIs vs. the open design of KN. But all tests I can see are for performance, nothing like you did, to test the filter efficiency for engine protection. Would you please do some test on them?

You should do fuel filters next. Common spin on brands like Napa, Baldwin, Fleetguard, Wix ect. There was one article I had seen before where a brand did better in filtration (As it was rated to). However that was only with a caveat. The testers ended up purging it as there were contaminates already in the filter which made it fail the first test.

IMO stock filter daily and performance filter for track day. it sucks (no pun intended) that modern vehicles don't have the space for the old school round air filter housings like on old Landcruiser's, probably not much of a deal for on road but off road there awesome even without a raised air intake and pre filter the cyclone action gets rid of a fair bit of dust before it gets to the main filter.

since most engines nowadays are electronically regulated, i dont think more flow through the Airfilter will do anything, aside of filtering dust particle and such

I was hoping there would have been a test on an OEM filter as well. I stopped using K&N filters years ago because of that very reason, they don't filter. I like my engines, I will take a few KW less of power with filtration over non filtration thank you.

I think there might be a small flaw in your aluminum powder test, aluminum powder is sold as a certain mesh or micron *AND BELOW* meaning that the particles are the same or below what is stated, settling of product could have occurred allowing some filters to receive a higher amount of undersized material than others, depending on when they were tested compared to the other filters. Though I do appreciate the thoroughness of your testing, I just thought it worth mentioning this possible oversight in your methodology.

Spectre did a lot better than i was expecting. I have it in my 04 grand marquis definitely gives it a nice boost

You can almost always guarantee that the test is done wrong when looking at K&N. They always use a constant flow test when engines don't supply constant flow and rely on that turbulent flow to drastically increase filtration.

Lol k&n is the worst filter can put on a car lol wtf kind of engineer are you and how much did k&n pay you cause you got payed as any car guy will tell you.k&n will kill your engine

I guess the other side of the question that everybody forgets to ask is how much dust and at what size is actually harmful to engines over its lifespan? People only look at airflow capability vs dust filtration performance but not more closely at the relationship between air contaminants and engine wear itself.

Who actually makes the mobil 1 filter? My guess would be Wix.

I would have liked to see how the Mopar filter performed. The MO-409 filter is the equivalent to the others you’ve tested. I think they used to have the same design as WIX but now they look different so I’m guessing they changed suppliers.

Just use the OEM filter, unless doing some serious mods. Another risk with oiled filters, is the consumer being able to properly perform the re-oiling of the filter. Too much oil, no patience or ability to let it sit (at least the K&N way back when instructed this), or added cost of having to buy a second filter to make up for inability to let the filter sit.

Thank you! We need more of these to cut through the crap of marketing and OEM requirements and the constantly changing quality unfortunately especially since covid shuffled everything up.

Heated oil to operating temp would be the best way to test. even better would be to heat cycle the oil throughout the test to show out the filters work through the viscosity changes in the oil.

When saying you can see the price savings, you should've also considered the price for the cleaning kits and how often you need a new cleaning kit. In the end it usually is more expensive so not actually cheaper for the k&n.

I used to work at K&N and I will tell you that there at the factory, we made K&N, Spectre and AEM filters and intake systems there. The AEM/K&N team had a building there that had a dyno which the engineers worked on to build and test the products before they go into mass production. At the factory, we also made STI, TRD, MOPAR and Mazda Speed parts as well. So in my opinion, just keep your filters clean and greased to keep it working well.

and when you add these filter the computer compensates for more air so they are almost pointless. Source: 33 years mechanic

K&N own AEM

If you drive normal every 5000 miles change if you like to hit the gas check at 3000 miles see color and smell different driving styles give differing results. Thats the advice i give.
