Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a man of mysterious origin who believes he has put the past behind him, dedicates himself to creating a quiet new life. Its not that you know the Russian is the boy in the story right. He asks what do see when you look at me? So Denzel tells him his life story saying he's a scared little boy

Marton is such an underrated, or at the very least underutilized, actor, and it's a joy seeing two brilliant actors like these playing off each other.

It's Marton's acting in this piece which fascinates me so much more than Denzel's. McCall is basically just a fantasy-fulfilment persona, fun to watch but not intrinsically interesting. But Teddy has all these layers. That gleam of polish and self-assurance. The visible outline of calculated, sociopathic brutality lurking just beneath. But then the way he begins to show that that too is just a mask, and what you glimpse underneath is the wreckage of a profoundly damaged and malformed psyche. Teddy's a monster, but he's still a more convincing human than McCall.

The fact Denzel answered Nikolai's simple question without a straight answer with a story of possibly the guy's own childhood is fantastic writing.

Psychology getting his mind
I was impressed just by the comparison of Bob giving the men a chance, but this is on a whole new level. He's telling Nikolai that his men made the same mistake he did way back and now they're dead for it, and he's giving him the chance not to make that mistake again.
"Stop me if you know this one." ... "Oh no, carry on."... "Ok." HAHAHAHA!!! Classic!!!
@sean K I think he's referring to how Teddy already knows the story Denzel is telling (because the boy he's talking about is Teddy himself) but decides to hear it anyway.

I think the story is not only a way to say that the little boy grew up to become Teddy but to attack Teddy psychologically.
Teddy says that “You think you know me”
McCall does know him. McCall is still a mystery in this film. Teddy pretty much has been singled out.
That’s why this scene is interesting. It shows one side knows more than the other and that’s an advantage when it comes to the final confrontation.

Understand however that to have this scene be epic as it is you can't deny the acting chops of the antagonist i.e. Marton Csokas.
There is little mention of him in these comments; so if someone mentioned it... acknowledge and move on.

I just realized what the implications of that last line are. Nikolai asks "what do you see when you look at me?" and McCall tells him his own life's story in response. The hidden conversation in this is "do you know who you're dealing with?" and the response is "yes, I've done my research."
At the end, McCall gives Nikolai time to make his choice, leaving a phone number with which to contact him when he's ready. It's already fairly clear Nikolai isn't about to take McCall's "offer" seriously, and so that's why McCall turns Nikolai's own question back on him: "what do you see when you look at me?" He's asking him "do _you_ know who you're dealing with?" with the implication that if Nikolai really _does_ know, he should take McCall's "offer" far more seriously.
That's brilliant screenwriting right there.

He is also quite stiff when talking to Denzel who is just relaxed impling he was intimidated by Denzel.
Props to the actor playing the Russian here as his facial reactions are a bit too subtle to notice but still managed to pull it off.

The part where McCall speaks in Russian.. you can see in Nicolai's face.. the realisation that he's got involved with the wrong person. Someone even more deadly and connected than he is.
Mastery from both actors
That clearly shows that any main antagonist/lead villain has to be as good as protagonist/good guy and this is casting at its best and when I'd seen it in the cinema, I was found Nicolai/Teddy frightening indeed and it gave Robert McCall a challenge : Antoine Fuqua deserves credit for a big screen adaptation of an 80's TV series and thanks to the success of this and equally good 2018 movie, a recently announced third episode is in the works - 👍!.

The more I watch this movie. The more this becomes the best scene….the acting, the body language. The confidence of Nikolai slowly being taken away by Robert….wearing all black staring at him with his black eyes….revealing his life story but remaining a mystery…then he drops the line in Russian…solidifying that you are messing with a killer and I haven’t even really got started. Robert is in zero fear of Nikolai and now he’s letting him know that it’s over….and Nikolai still wondering…..who the hell is this guy….

The way Denzel's eyes are pure black in this scene like a shark is so powerful. Sizing up his prey. Doesn't even raise his voice but projects pure fear. Probably the best actor in this day and age by far ! Masterful acting !
Yeah honestly when he says what do you see when you look at me, the look he gave is cold af. Eyes black as a shark and absolutely no emotion. Looks like the dam devil and I think he scared Nikolai in that moment

Indeed, Indeed Lake. Just saw the flick the other day - this Marton dude is baddass in this film.
"I have done some bad things in my life things I don't wish to do again but for you I'm going to make an exception" That's when you must know it's war going forward
That is my favorite movie moment of all time. I don’t know why. But when he says « I’m gonna make an exception » all the hair on my body stands up and I feel a rush of blood in my face. It’s pure violence.
This scene is about 5 seconds too short. Martin Csokas' facial expression to that final question is absolutely golden. His face turns from a smirk, to a look of near concern as Denzel walks away, grade A acting, and writing.
Well it's also the way Denzel's eyes shift to killer mode for a second, that even after all the tough talk he still had another gear then he flipped the final insult pushing the dead guys glasses in Teddy's drink.
His face shouts " who the hell is he?"

By telling Teddy information about Teddy's life, McCall is letting him know that he is a man with serious connections and information, and thus someone to be taken very seriously. The fact that he also quietly disposed of Teddy's main muscle in a a restaurant in about 15 seconds should probably have driven the point home.

@@Stealcurtains64e -- Of course. Nikolai thought he was this inscrutable X factor, completely impervious to any sort of analysis. Bob told him the story not just to let Nikolai know that he was aware of his identity, but to let him know he could see right through him, that he was easy to read.
And he did it to answer Nikolai's question in the coldest way possible.
"What do you see when you look at me?"
"A scared little boy."
That's what the story is about. It's Bob looking at Nikolai and telling him what he sees under the surface-- even underneath the monster Nikolai is to everyone else-- is nothing more than an abused, scared little boy.
These kinds of movies are only as good as the “bad guy”.
Maron Csokas does not disappoint in this film.

Swamp Jammer that was the very best line in the entire movie 🍿 it is DRIPPING with testosterone and pure evil 💀💀💀 almost like 2 demons 💥💥 looking at each other . It was like honest. And pure

Now this story that he talks about of the little boy who killed his adoptive father is interesting because I think Mr. McCall is actually talking about his own childhood simply by the fact that 1 he can speak Russian and to he makes a very off hand reference about someone he loves very dearly and that he would never go back to being that person.

When two actors draw you in the scene, to the point, where you're not even breathing anymore because you're so caught up in the moment, you know they're the best actors.

Denzel’s delivery is so exquisitely powerful. Intense. Calculated. You hang on every word. His gaze hypnotic, his body language revealing a calm mixed with rage. Really a masterpiece. Marton is excellent, too, without a doubt.

@@tomscott3 -- Swear down! Like Yaron said, for Denzel to come face to face with the villain in the most intense, intelligent, controlled ,yet soft, charming and calming way WAS DAMN SCARY & FANTASTIC. Both actors deserve awards for that scene.
And not everyone agrees. I see the acting by "the bad guy" as superior: intelligent, forthright, and restrained. I often feel that Denzel receives quite a bit more rave reviews than he has quite earned. I can see what he is shooting for. It's the best he can do, and is adequate for the scene. But does not really equate to "great acting".

Denzel was never an action star. He doesn't have the huge muscles, or crazy physique. He doesn't have the silly one liners, or intense martial arts background. What he has is years of acting experience that allows him to be scarier than all of that. The way he looks at people, speaks to them, and uses his body language allows him to come across as a man who has spent decades doing probably unspeakable things. Similar to John Wick, Robert McCall doesn't waste energy with excess movement, he does exactly what he needs to do to get a job done quickly and efficiently, while still looking badass. Which to me is beautiful choreography. Denzel is no action star, he is just a powerful actor that has the skills to be a believable nightmare for anyone who is opposite of him.

It's corny.
It’s too cerebral for most people. Even though there are plenty of action sequences the tone and tenor are much more steeped in moral dilemma which audiences would rather not invest in.

But does he really? I wonder: Is it Denzels acting or the written dialog? I guess, the unemotional expression-less acting is part of the role, but it's also "easy". Now compare that to Heath Ledger's Joker performance.
Nikolai assumed that when McCall or anyone looks at him they can see 'Nothing'
But when he takes his name "Nikolai" , that unsettled smile on Nikolai's face showed the 12yr boy getting exposed.

I think the realization that McCall knew who he was intimidated Teddy even more than all the shopwrecking McCall had done up until that point

He was then throwing it back at Nikolai by pointing out that Nikolai *doesn't* actually know who he is facing but wants to just label him as "weak" anyway. It was meant to unsettle Nikolai, and it clearly succeeded.

1:24 in this small window you see, how Robert's words actually got through to him and he gets irritated and emotionaly shaken at the same time , for he knows its ending and that its talking about him. Briliant subtle details that you realize when rewatching, don't know if its a great movie (to me it personaly is) but the ACTORS in this scene are one of the greatest I've ever seen!

Everybody talks about Denzel. He’s amazing that’s a given. But this other guy is extraordinary too. Whew, what a great villian. His face, his body language, the portrayal of total apathy. Yea he’s great.
You wouldn't expect an action movie to have awesome dialogue like this but it does. Whoever cast Denzel should get an award and the Russian is good too.

Marton Csokas gave us one of the greatest villains action cinema has produced and he doesn’t get enough credit for it. Yes Denzel is awesome but that only can work if the person opposite him on just as on point. It’s why the first film is so much better than the other two.

A lot of people don't see the importance of this scene. The "sit down" of 2 deadly men sizing each other up. The subtle facial ticks during the conversation are priceless. Both actors played this scene perfectly.

Nicolai was afraid. That's why he was smirking. Thats what Denzel sees. But if you look at Denzel....nothing,death. That is what Nicolai sees.
The other is the level of intelligence exposed. In the conversation Denzel shows he is both smarter and wiser. Everything out of Nicolai mouth was based on holding in emotion even though he said he had none,he was playing it off and Denzel saw right through him.
I look at things a whole lot differently these days when I go into Lowes or Home Depot.

Just saw Equalizer 3. Honestly this villain seemed more close to Robert skill wise and Psychologically. Marton Csokas was brilliant in this role. Denzel pulls the whole trilogy with his great acting.

Hands down one of the best scenes of a movie I have ever scene. The suspense is all over this scene and love it, but the fact is we know one is a villain and the other used to murder too ( Denzel) like a badass. Amazing story line
2:55 Csokas's acting here is legendary. You see Teddy trying to keep his expression, especially his eyes, steady but the armor is crumbling as McCall tells the story going right for his figurative jugular. He manages to keep his mouth steady save for a twitch but you see him screaming inside through his eyes.
"But for you, I'm going to make an exception."
Sorry but that line was SO telegraphed I couldn't enjoy such a cliche.

This right here sums up Denzel’s character perfectly. It shows us he’s really dead inside and that makes him more freighting than the antagonist. Which is really rare to achieve in any film. Where the protagonist is more intimidating than the antagonist.
Some monsters do all that they can do be good, upstanding people. It's only when you give one a purpose to fight, motivation and drive, the will to do harm or to give 100% commitment to something.. you find the monster.
That's how Batman do it. Not the Batman in the justice league movie that's trash

The intense yet subtle power of this scene gets missed at first viewing to many. I didn't realize just how strong of a statement he makes. Denzel basically walks in, and tells this man he not only knows his name (he never gives it to him yet he knows) and proceeds to lay out his life story before him as if it were some fable. It shows him that he's messing with the wrong guy in such a powerful way that you may not realize at first unless you were the actual character sitting across from him here. To have a total stranger come up to you and lay out your life story, speak your language, and be that calm about it... Wow is that not terrifying to receive?
