  • Finally, the weather cooperated a bit and I was able to bust up the new in-ground garden plot with the LandPride Middle Buster. This tractor implement was waaay cheaper than a bottom plow and I think it did the job. Thank goodness I got this done and the plot tarped because the rains came shortly after!

    I do not mean to be negative but get the correct tool for the job. Either find a 3 point hitch tiller or a moldboard plow and a disc. You will be much happier. With either set up you will be able to work your soil much better.
    Keep on keepin' on

      Hi Jo! No worries, I agree that I need the correct tool and your recommendations are spot on. I just don't want to spend the $ on a disc or plow... I have looked at good used ones and I have other priorities for $ at the moment... so I tried to get by with what I have. Thanks for watching.

      Tractor Supply disc is $1400 while the 4' tiller is around $1800, I'm considering whether to buy 4' or look for 5'?All my plots are smaller in size.🌻

      @@homesteadpilgrim You can find bottom plows at most auctions for around $100, many times cheaper because they're worthless to the modern farmer, but so valuable to us hobby farmers.

    Greetings from Wisconsin! You're keeping my hope alive for spring! I just got in from plowing another 3" of snow, by they're saying we're gonna hit 40 degrees tomorrow! I can't wait. Too cold and too little snow to use my blower so I hooked the box blade up and used tht on my L2501. I absolutely love the pat's quick hitch! But like you I bought a 24" body top link, and it's too long. I found a 20", but it was cat 2, however I switched the eyes out with my 24" and the 20" is absolutely perfect for many implements. Thanks for the video and I can't wait for spring, but a good 3ft of snow has to melt 1st, gonna be a lot of water running this week.

      Hey @Ironheadbiker! Greetings! Yep, spring is coming my friend and it will be here faster than we think. I hope your snow melts slowly and doesn't cause much issues with flooding or mud. Take care!

      Hi Robert! Of course, a disk cultivator would be the best tool but I don't have one currently. I have to work with what I have. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks, I'm thinking of getting a medium sized tiller for the ground beds. The biggest challenge for me was keeping the weeds at bay. Good luck!

    Thanks for posting I am in the same boat I don’t want to spend thousands on a tractor tiller, I bought a disk for 100$ the other day, I think a combination of the middle buster and the disk will be sufficient for my needs. Even if my disk doesn’t work I could still use a middle buster for depth and breaking apart soil and buy a hand tiller and save over a thousand dollars, with high inflation these days it great to find ways to save a buck or spend it on my children vs a tiller I may use once a year for a few minutes.

      Hi Jake, I agree your approach should work. The middle buster has been useful but is not fully adequate to cultivate and prep the garden beds. I bought a Honda tiller (small) that I will use going forward, it wasn't that expensive. Thanks for watching!

    Yes I like my Carolina blue skies too! Nice job on the middle buster I'm looking at one at Tractor Supply but they also have 4' tiller too for my B2401🌻

      If you have the budget, definitely get the tiller. I'm not fully convinced the middle buster is effective for getting the soil ready for planting corn, for example. I will try my Land Pride Grader Scraper next to see if that helps break up and till the soil good enough so I don't have to spring for a full-on tiller. I may have to eventually! Good luck!

      The middle buster is about $220 and the disc is about $$1300 at Tractor Supply ($1520) vs a tiller $1900(so only $380 more thx🌻

    That middle buster is for a BX size tractor. You need one with a longer reach.

    Does tractor have draft control function on the three point? The plows not staying in the ground.

    • @homesteadpilgrim
      @homesteadpilgrim  2 роки тому

      No, I have to push down on the 3 point position lever. Draft control requires another lever and a sensor on the back of the tractor which mine doesn't have.

    In the end, isn't running over the flipped soil just another way of compacting it? I think this implement would be great for hardpan but I don't see it being useful here...

    • @homesteadpilgrim
      @homesteadpilgrim  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Stomps! Yeah, I agree with you. I ended up putting down cardboard and composted cow manure a la Charles Dowding. I wish I had a cultivator or disc harrow. Come to think of it, I may try my land plane with the scarifiers when I'm ready to plant the tobacco. That should work... just don't want to spend any more $ on expensive attachments.

    • @roflstomps324
      @roflstomps324 3 роки тому +1

      @@homesteadpilgrim that's a good idea. I use my box blade with the scarifiers to rip up the clay. I run the reverse tine tiller over it and plant. Cardboard is good if you have a lot. I have a line on straw. It works fine enough. Ditto on the attachments.

      Hi Faith's Farm Life! The middle buster is from Tractor Supply. It was the cheapest option for me at the time so that I could break up the hard pan, but as you can see the ground is way too wet and it was a challenge to cultivate. I ended up putting down cardboard and cow manure on top last year. I will likely do the same again since my ph is so low with the clay. Over time the soil should get better as I use wood chips for walkways and compost for the beds. Thanks for watching:!

      I have mixed results with the middle buster, its great for creating a quick trench or plowing up a row of potatos, but I purchased a small tiller for my in-ground plots.
