Excellent job and perfect video angle. Just like anyone would expect. How come other people do not lube up anything at all? And, I am wondering if this is not too much lubricant, since the brakes heat up and may be the lub starts droping or creaping over the brake rotor or inside the brake pads. What is your opinion on that? I am not a professional.

Thanks Rodrigo! When I made this video I couldn't find the back discs in the same slotted /dimple for a good price. I could only find the OEM BMW version that were way too expensive. I'd much rather have a floating hat, slotted only, but those are impossible to find without going to a big brake kit.

I bought the car used and didn't know it they had ever been resurfaced, they probably didn't need to be replaced. I didn't like the way the brakes felt so I decided to swap the pads along with the rotors and start over fresh. After this and the brake fuild flush, they felt soooo much better. If you're not going to replace your rotors, you need to find a shop that will resurface them.
Great video. Thx. Although my neighbour who is a mechanic with Mercedes-Benz exclusively for the AMG side, advised me not to use break squeak lube. He did suggest to lib the pins. Did my fronts spring of 2020 and have no issues or squeaking.
Seems like you did it but forgot to mention it : put anti seize on the wheel hub before putting the disc back on ! And also why not spray brake cleaner on the hub and parking brake pad ? I always did it and never had any problems. Other than that good DIY ! Do you like the Brembo rotors ? I'm tempted to buy them but the reviews online are not very good 🧐

@Tim Moul I didn't want anyone to misuse the anti-seize. i.e. use too much, over torque bolts, put it in the wrong places. I hope to eventually make a video talking about some of this stuff. I didn't do a run out in my video, I trusted the brembo rotors to be true.
Great video! I was out at the bar and torque wrench, but thank you for lots of details. I can't imagine if any mechanic will be cleaning dust/rust of calipers or wheel mounts of our cars. Also, are there two sensors for driver+passenger sides? I got delivered Brembo brake pads but it contains only one sensor in the package. No pins or retainers that you showed in the video.
2 years old, but: there is typically just one sensor up front and one in the rear. In the job I just did, the left front sensor tripped with 3mm pad remaining, but the RF pads (side without sensor) were all the way down to 1mm. So the wear can be uneven.

@@MrFranciscoooooo unless you're racing, you don't need fancy rotors. You can get a better than stock brake pad like I did and improve the braking performance. Doing the brake fluid flush along with it and you'll notice a big difference. I hated the brakes when I got the car and doing this whole brake job with the fluid flush changed my mind! 😁
Great Video. Delighted especially because I have the M-Sport brake option on my 2015 325X GT. I just came from the BMW dealer who said after only 35,000 easy miles, I needed to change all pads AND the rotors...$1800 for the fronts and $1400 for the rears. Never seen a need to change the disks on the several cars I've worked on. At such low mileage, will pad replacement only make sense? They also said that replacing the pads required removing the calipers which your video appears to show is not necessary with the M-Sport brakes. Seems they are trying to milk extra money from me. I have the skills and tools if I DIY. Your feedback would be most welcome.
BMW 740 E38 brake job also requires pad and rotor change as done by local BMW specialist mechanic shop. I have done both front and rear. Front I tried Brembo but brake pedal now goes bit lower than what was with original OEM BMW pad/rotors.
Superb video. I now have my first BMW with M sport brakes, so this is very helpful. One little detail, though. I have previously had problems getting the rear rotors off without releasing the parking brake spring. Is this something you have experienced?
I have in fact had to loosen the parking brake a few notches to get the rear rotors off this car. Just make sure you remember 😊 how many notches you loosened it so it's easier to set back to it's original position. 🥳Congrats on the new car! Quick question on when you put the car on the stands. I assume you jack up the front first and put the 2 stands under the car then jack up the back and put those 2 stands? If this is the case is there any concern with the car sliding off the stands in the front when you jack up the rear?
Yes, that's the procedure when I put the car on 4 jackstands. I put the front on the lowest setting for the jackstands and lift the rear slowly. After the rear is on stands as well, I'll lift the front again and adjust the jackstands higher. I always go slow and make sure the wheels of the jack don't get stuck on little pebbles or anything that could cause the jack to slip.

You can, absolutely. I think O'Reilly has more of a selection than AutoZone has. AutoZone may only carry the Duralast brand. I would definitely check out RockAuto as well. Just few quick price checks, RockAuto beats the other two 👆. Rock has Brembo rotors (non sport package) priced at $65 each which is cheaper than the cheapest rotors O'Reilly has on their site! 😲 The big trade off with RockAuto is the price of shipping and delivery time. I think you would have to wait a day or two for your local auto parts store to get the parts in anyway. Hope this helps! 🤙
The lube is to prevent parts from vibrating and causing that annoying squeal when you hit the brakes. Anti-seize is to prevent metal parts from rusting together with other metal parts. I removed the part of the video where I put anti-seize in a couple places, because if not used properly, it can cause problems and potentially be dangerous.

I've seen people paint that small space in the rotors because it tends to rust and the brakes dont actually contact with that part so it wont take it off. Would it be wise to paint them with caliber paint?
This is actually one of the main reasons I chose to go with the stock brembo rotors. They have aluminum hats that are riveted to the brake disc. Aluminum doesn't rust, it goes through a different process called oxidation. No need to paint that unless you do it for aesthetic reasons. If you buy rotors with steel hats, sure, you could paint them. It's pretty rare these days to find steel rotors that don't come painted. They're usually painted black or sometimes silver. You don't need to get a specifically made caliper paint kit either. A can of rustoleum high temp paint from Lowe's could save you some money. Make sure you mask off the surface of the disc that comes in contact with the brake pads of course. If the rotors outlast the pads, you could repaint them then have them resurfaced at a brake shop. Personally, I've never painted a set of rotors. Ever. I like the look of the aluminum hat on these.
I have a 2018 x3 w m-sport brakes. Is there a special tool needed (ie scanner) to release the rear parking brake in order to release the parking brake before replacing pads?
My 435d has the upgraded M Sport brakes and BMW have said they need to be changed in the near future, I checked how much they cost and almost fell off my chair 🤣 what discs and pads are equivalent to the BMW M Sport brakes that came from the factory that I can purchase and have my local mechanic fit instead of being robbed by BMW dealer?
do you think the 370x 30's for the front fit? I'm using ecs tuning to order and its telling me if fits only if i have 4 piston brakes. But im assuming the m235's only came with the 4 piston
M235's came with 4 piston front calipers but are the smaller M Sport size. The 370mm rotors will only fit the slightly larger M Performance calipers because they are set further away from the center of the hub. Believe me, I measured the distance between the the 340mm rotor and caliper on my car... Not a chance to fit anything larger than 350mm. 😔 I started to research if the larger M Performance calipers would fit the M235, but for almost the same price, you can get a 6 piston caliper big brake kit... so I stopped looking for the specs on the BMW 370's.

I've heard that before but haven't ever had any issues with this stuff. Permatex says it may cause issues with a specific type of rubber but that type isn't generally used for brake parts. If you're worried about it, use the silicone stuff. amzn.to/3rivIdt
Yes, you can keep the same brake sensors as long as they're still in one piece. As the break pads get thinner, the sensor gets closer to the rotor. When it eventually comes in contact with the rotor, the metal contacts complete a circuit, causing the alert.
@@TheWrenchLab one more question😅 what exactly is the alert to change the sensor? Is it the warning that I have like 470 miles left or when it gets worse?
There's no warning to replace the sensor. If you got that warning then the sensor just have come in contact with the brake disc, meaning you have to replace the sensor when you replace pads. If you don't replace the sensor, the car will still think the pads are worn down and the warning wont go away. They're not very expensive or difficult to replace when you're replacing pads and rotors.
These particular Brembo rotors are the exact same thing that BMW uses as thebOEM part, minus the little QR CODE and label saying BMW and the price. 😉 They work well for normal use or even some spirited driving on your local, country, back roads. No issues, they're great.
I got 320i EU with standard brakes (rotors 300x22). I want upgrade for M brakes (front: 340x30 and rear 345x24). It its ok fot 18"? Should i swap serwo (serwo mens: stock nr: 34 33 6 851 097, M ver is: 34 33 6 851 098) and brakes pomp (i got stock: 34 33 6 851 093) ??Im wandering should i change those two elements ?
The rubber seals are for protection of the piston inside. You should definitely replace it as soon as possible. I don't hace a video on this yet but... Check out Bryans video in the link below. Hey! I saw you had a bottle of anti-seize but didn't see where you used it in the video. Did you put any on the "inside" of the wheel hub or did you just use it on the nuts and bolts?
I put a very very thin coat on the surface of the hub that comes in contact with the rotor. I took that part out of the video because I didn't want anyone to over do it which can potentially cause dangerous conditions. I forgot to remove the anti-seize part of the video. If you're experienced/comfortable using anti-seize go for it. If not, don't worry about it. If the rotor rusts and gets stuck to the hub, there are ways to get it off without much effort, no biggie. I talk about it in my lug stud conversion video. 👍
Too much anti-seize can fling off the hub and can get on the brake disc surface reducing braking force... Like pouring oil on your floor and trying to run on it. There are a few things I use anti-seize on but I do that from experience and trial and error! 😂 There are also times I use a drop of loctite but again, don't want people to go overboard.
@@TheWrenchLab thanks for your quick response! How are you liking the setup? I wanted to get Zimmerman rotors, but the Brembo's just went on a 25% sale at my local shop! I would probably get the Power Stop Z23 which are very similar to the Z26, the shim is the only difference from what I can gather online.
I try to respond as quickly as I'm able! 😁 The Brembos were a few bucks more and I trusted them more than the rest. I did a fluid flush after the new pada ans rotors and it was a night and day difference with the way the brakes felt! The Z23 are regular daily driver pads with very low dust. The Z26 pads are more geares towards high performance vehicles.
I got a 2016 M235i a month ago, I'm really happy I found your video, it's given me the confidence to tackle the brake job myself! I'll end up saving a few hundred bucks and get the satisfaction of doing it myself. I'll let you know how it all goes!
Doing these now on my neighbors car. Already did the front but gotta question on the back. Do you need to replace the rear brake bracket bolts. I read that they are stretch bolts but hard to find real info on it. In this site torque specs it says to replace. Sorry for the late response Dany! Your comment was in the spam folder for some reason. It is recommend to replace these bolts as they are a one time use because of the exact reason you mentioned. As a general rule with these BMW's, always replace the hardware because the vast majority are these stretch bolts. It can get expensive, but it's well worth it in the long run!
He most likely did this because when he changed his break pads, his new ones won't wear out as quicker. If his NEW break pads are mixed in with his OLD rotor, then the NEW break pads will wear out much quicker, mainly because the OLD rotor's metal is old and rusty which'll cause damage to the NEW pad's metal. If both the rotor and the pads are FRESH they will have a longer life expectancy together.
Before i am going to replace my rear M Sport Brake pads. Just want to confirm with you the Part number for rear M Sport brake pads my brake is exact Blue color as yours. Also seems like you are doing quite Easy to restore two of piston back to original state. Can you please confirm that i can Just wiggle the brake pads and push piston back by Hand without using tools? Many thanks in advance
I have the part number for the pads I used in the description. I love these pads for street use. I've had no squealing at all. There are a ton of different pads you can use though. And as long as your brkaes are in good working condition and you open the brake master cylinder the pistons should push in without much effort. @@MrFranciscoooooo unless you're racing, you don't need fancy rotors. You can get a better than stock brake pad like I did and improve the braking performance. Doing the brake fluid flush along with it and you'll notice a big difference. I hated the brakes when I got the car and doing this whole brake job with the fluid flush changed my mind! 😁

Great Video. Delighted especially because I have the M-Sport brake option on my 2015 325X GT. I just came from the BMW dealer who said after only 35,000 easy miles, I needed to change all pads AND the rotors...$1800 for the fronts and $1400 for the rears. Never seen a need to change the disks on the several cars I've worked on. At such low mileage, will pad replacement only make sense? They also said that replacing the pads required removing the calipers which your video appears to show is not necessary with the M-Sport brakes. Seems they are trying to milk extra money from me. I have the skills and tools if I DIY.

BMW 740 E38 brake job also requires pad and rotor change as done by local BMW specialist mechanic shop. I have done both front and rear. Front I tried Brembo but brake pedal now goes bit lower than what was with original OEM BMW pad/rotors.

One little detail, though. I have previously had problems getting the rear rotors off without releasing the parking brake spring. Is this something you have experienced?
I have in fact had to loosen the parking brake a few notches to get the rear rotors off this car. Just make sure you remember 😊 how many notches you loosened it so it's easier to set back to it's original position. 🥳Congrats on the new car! Quick question on when you put the car on the stands. I assume you jack up the front first and put the 2 stands under the car then jack up the back and put those 2 stands? If this is the case is there any concern with the car sliding off the stands in the front when you jack up the rear?
Yes, that's the procedure when I put the car on 4 jackstands. I put the front on the lowest setting for the jackstands and lift the rear slowly. After the rear is on stands as well, I'll lift the front again and adjust the jackstands higher. I always go slow and make sure the wheels of the jack don't get stuck on little pebbles or anything that could cause the jack to slip.
How many brake sensors should I buy? Btw, video was very helpful

@@syhm1212 they're at opposite corners. Rear passenger side and front driver side. You'll see them clipped onto the inside brake pad, closer to the center of the car.

The fronts bolts are 110nm. The rear is 50nm +60°.

You can, absolutely. I think O'Reilly has more of a selection than AutoZone has. AutoZone may only carry the Duralast brand. I would definitely check out RockAuto as well. Just few quick price checks, RockAuto beats the other two 👆. Rock has Brembo rotors (non sport package) priced at $65 each which is cheaper than the cheapest rotors O'Reilly has on their site! 😲
The big trade off with RockAuto is the price of shipping and delivery time.
I think you would have to wait a day or two for your local auto parts store to get the parts in anyway.

So what’s the different between the antiseize and lubricant? I don’t think I saw you use antiseize
The lube is to prevent parts from vibrating and causing that annoying squeal when you hit the brakes. Anti-seize is to prevent metal parts from rusting together with other metal parts. I removed the part of the video where I put anti-seize in a couple places, because if not used properly, it can cause problems and potentially be dangerous.
i think for m performance up front u should have M Performance 370mm rotors not 340, or maybe theres a difference in m sport vs m performance

Would you pump your brakes after each wheel is done or would you wait until the two front or two rear are both finished?
Just wait until your finished, because you'll have to do at the end either way.
Should I buy the same brembo rotors or should I buy stoptech drilled rotors?
I've seen people paint that small space in the rotors because it tends to rust and the brakes dont actually contact with that part so it wont take it off. Would it be wise to paint them with caliber paint?
This is actually one of the main reasons I chose to go with the stock brembo rotors. They have aluminum hats that are riveted to the brake disc. Aluminum doesn't rust, it goes through a different process called oxidation. No need to paint that unless you do it for aesthetic reasons. If you buy rotors with steel hats, sure, you could paint them. It's pretty rare these days to find steel rotors that don't come painted. They're usually painted black or sometimes silver. You don't need to get a specifically made caliper paint kit either. A can of rustoleum high temp paint from Lowe's could save you some money. Make sure you mask off the surface of the disc that comes in contact with the brake pads of course. If the rotors outlast the pads, you could repaint them then have them resurfaced at a brake shop. Personally, I've never painted a set of rotors. Ever. I like the look of the aluminum hat on these.
I have a 2018 x3 w m-sport brakes. Is there a special tool needed (ie scanner) to release the rear parking brake in order to release the parking brake before replacing pads?
My 435d has the upgraded M Sport brakes and BMW have said they need to be changed in the near future, I checked how much they cost and almost fell off my chair 🤣 what discs and pads are equivalent to the BMW M Sport brakes that came from the factory that I can purchase and have my local mechanic fit instead of being robbed by BMW dealer?

do you think the 370x 30's for the front fit? I'm using ecs tuning to order and its telling me if fits only if i have 4 piston brakes. But im assuming the m235's only came with the 4 piston
M235's came with 4 piston front calipers but are the smaller M Sport size. The 370mm rotors will only fit the slightly larger M Performance calipers because they are set further away from the center of the hub. Believe me, I measured the distance between the the 340mm rotor and caliper on my car... Not a chance to fit anything larger than 350mm. 😔 I started to research if the larger M Performance calipers would fit the M235, but for almost the same price, you can get a 6 piston caliper big brake kit... so I stopped looking for the specs on the BMW 370's.

I've heard that before but haven't ever had any issues with this stuff. Permatex says it may cause issues with a specific type of rubber but that type isn't generally used for brake parts.

Yes, you can keep the same brake sensors as long as they're still in one piece. As the break pads get thinner, the sensor gets closer to the rotor. When it eventually comes in contact with the rotor, the metal contacts complete a circuit, causing the alert.
@@TheWrenchLab one more question😅 what exactly is the alert to change the sensor? Is it the warning that I have like 470 miles left or when it gets worse?
There's no warning to replace the sensor. If you got that warning then the sensor just have come in contact with the brake disc, meaning you have to replace the sensor when you replace pads. If you don't replace the sensor, the car will still think the pads are worn down and the warning wont go away. They're not very expensive or difficult to replace when you're replacing pads and rotors.

How do you find the brembo rotors compared to oem, are they performing well ?
These particular Brembo rotors are the exact same thing that BMW uses as thebOEM part, minus the little QR CODE and label saying BMW and the price. 😉 They work well for normal use or even some spirited driving on your local, country, back roads. No issues, they're great.

I got 320i EU with standard brakes (rotors 300x22). I want upgrade for M brakes (front: 340x30 and rear 345x24). It its ok fot 18"? Should i swap serwo (serwo mens: stock nr: 34 33 6 851 097, M ver is: 34 33 6 851 098) and brakes pomp (i got stock: 34 33 6 851 093) ??Im wandering should i change those two elements ?
What if the seals of the brake piston is rippped, I was changing mines and I see that one of them is ripped
The rubber seals are for protection of the piston inside. You should definitely replace it as soon as possible. I don't hace a video on this yet but... Check out Bryans video in the link below. He shows how to remove and replace the seals in a series of videos he did when he powder coated his calipers.

Hey! I saw you had a bottle of anti-seize but didn't see where you used it in the video. Did you put any on the "inside" of the wheel hub or did you just use it on the nuts and bolts?
I put a very very thin coat on the surface of the hub that comes in contact with the rotor. I took that part out of the video because I didn't want anyone to over do it which can potentially cause dangerous conditions. I forgot to remove the anti-seize part of the video.
If you're experienced/comfortable using anti-seize go for it. If not, don't worry about it. If the rotor rusts and gets stuck to the hub, there are ways to get it off without much effort, no biggie.
I talk about it in my lug stud conversion video. 👍
Too much anti-seize can fling off the hub and can get on the brake disc surface reducing braking force... Like pouring oil on your floor and trying to run on it. There are a few things I use anti-seize on but I do that from experience and trial and error! 😂 There are also times I use a drop of loctite but again, don't want people to go overboard.
@@TheWrenchLab thanks for your quick response! How are you liking the setup? I wanted to get Zimmerman rotors, but the Brembo's just went on a 25% sale at my local shop! I would probably get the Power Stop Z23 which are very similar to the Z26, the shim is the only difference from what I can gather online.
I try to respond as quickly as I'm able! 😁 The Brembos were a few bucks more and I trusted them more than the rest. I did a fluid flush after the new pada ans rotors and it was a night and day difference with the way the brakes felt!
The Z23 are regular daily driver pads with very low dust. The Z26 pads are more geares towards high performance vehicles.
I got a 2016 M235i a month ago, I'm really happy I found your video, it's given me the confidence to tackle the brake job myself! I'll end up saving a few hundred bucks and get the satisfaction of doing it myself. I'll let you know how it all goes!
Doing these now on my neighbors car. Already did the front but gotta question on the back. Do you need to replace the rear brake bracket bolts. I read that they are stretch bolts but hard to find real info on it. In this site torque specs it says to replace. Sorry for the late response Dany! Your comment was in the spam folder for some reason. It is recommend to replace these bolts as they are a one time use because of the exact reason you mentioned. As a general rule with these BMW's, always replace the hardware because the vast majority are these stretch bolts. It can get expensive, but it's well worth it in the long run!

After watching the beginning and seeing all the crap i need, I decided to take it to a mechanic.
Why you replace the rotors? Waste of money
He most likely did this because when he changed his break pads, his new ones won't wear out as quicker. If his NEW break pads are mixed in with his OLD rotor, then the NEW break pads will wear out much quicker, mainly because the OLD rotor's metal is old and rusty which'll cause damage to the NEW pad's metal. If both the rotor and the pads are FRESH they will have a longer life expectancy together.
Before i am going to replace my rear M Sport Brake pads. Just want to confirm with you the Part number for rear M Sport brake pads my brake is exact Blue color as yours.
Also seems like you are doing quite Easy to restore two of piston back to original state. Can you please confirm that i can Just wiggle the brake pads and push piston back by Hand without using tools?

I have the part number for the pads I used in the description. I love these pads for street use. I've had no squealing at all. There are a ton of different pads you can use though.
And as long as your brkaes are in good working condition and you open the brake master cylinder the pistons should push in without much effort.
