BMW F30 Front Brake Pad & Disc Replacement DIY (Brembo M-Sport 2, 3, & 4-Series)

  • Опубліковано 16 сер 2024
  • ►This instructional DIY covers two jobs-BMW F30 brake pad replacement and BMW F30 brake disc or rotor replacement. Both of these jobs are being performed on a BMW 328i with the M-Sport brake package. The M-Sport brakes feature larger Brembo calipers along with brake pads and discs with a larger surface area.
The BMW M-Sport brakes with Brembo calipers offer superior stopping power over the standard brakes that come on the F30. Nate Vincent, the FCP Euro Motorsports Director and owner of this 328i, opted to replace the dusty BMW OEM pads with TRW Ultra Ceramic brake pads paired with Zimmerman slotted and dimpled rotors. The TRW pads offer comparable stopping power to the OEM pads while being both quieter and less dusty.
Follow along as Gareth takes us through the step-by-step process of replacing your BMW F30 brake pads and discs with minimal tools.

To compress the pistons I use the old brake pads to evenly apply pressure to push them in. I’ve never needed to use a tool to compress these pistons. For track days I have been able to swap out all pads on all four wheels in less than 45 minutes. This is a very easy job. Thx for the video.

Fantastic video giving clear step by step information on how to replace disc and pads out of a F30. My F31 (33000 miles ) is up for a front brake pad change and BMW have quoted £835 to replace all 4 corners. Costed out at £312 for parts so i am just going to do it myself.

Great brake job! TRW pads are showing alot of curiosity from Akebono fans. ZF now owns TRW for those who didn't know which gives confidence. Polishing those pins is very important indeed. You can lose wheel horsepower from delayed pad retraction. Another hidden often forgotten wheel horsepower thief is the caliper pistons. The seal builds crud around the pistons. Removing and polishing the pistons then putting a light coat of molykote silicone grease can give you a performance edge.

The Zimmerman after market one piece discs are notorious for warping. There’s a reason why the original Brembo discs are in two parts. If pins are pitted/corroded, replace them along with the clip. It’s recommended by Brembo to open the bleed nipples when retracting the pistons. The BMW ABS pump doesn’t like fluid forced back through the unit and is understood to cause premature failure of the pump. Just unnecessary to do so.due to size of brakes they are noisy. There’s a lubricant provided by Brembo to help reduce this that also helps prevent galvanic corrosion, use it.

Great video. By coincidence I have fitted the Zinnerman Disc with the Z Coat. Yes the callipers are very light but the discs are really heavy (370mm).
With regards to the brake fluid I use a small syringe / pipet to suck the displaced brake fluid out as the eight pistons will displace a fair amount of fluid which will spill from the reservoir.

Have you had any complaints about noise with this setup? I have the same rotors, but with akebono pads, and the noise is annoyingly loud, but only when driving. I think the pads are slightly hitting the slots in the rotor and makes the noise. On the highway next to barriers its very audible. When braking, it is smooth. I just can't get it to go away, bleed, push the pads back, etc. I'm very confused. Any advice?

Zimmerman is still a high quality brand. They explain in the video that this is a lower-cost alternative (being half as expensive) for the floating rotors from the same brand. The weight savings are there but are they worth spending twice as much on rotors? That's up to the owner.

    • @jasoneyes01

Zimmerman is the highest quality. They are precision balanced, zero varience, and tempered to prevent warping. If you drive in the tripple digits your steering wheel will have zero vibration from the brakes.

Brake rotors should last longer than pads - especially if this is the first brake job since the car left the factory and it has OE parts. I am about to do the pads on my 2016 340i - it has 52K miles and I will not be replacing the rotors unless I see any obvious damage. As a check, measure the thickness of the rotor, most manufacturers have a recommended minimum thickness they can reach before needing replacement.
