    Definitely one of the best instruction videos I have seen for replacing rear brakes and rotors on the BMW X5. I have a 2019 X5 M sport package. I didnt realize how complicated it was. I would never have figured out all the steps and special tools I need without watching this. I may still bring it in to a professional shop to since I dont think I would ever use those tools for anything else in the near future and I dont want to kill my back for this at my age. At least I know what to ask them about and how long it should take.

    I have an '87 Mercedes 560SEC and an '87 560SEL. My buddy wants me to do the pads on his '20 240i and this has shown me that they're much like Benz brakes. I can do this! Thanks for the information.

    just finished mine today. this video was extremely helpful. thankfully i work at a dealership and can use my shops lifts and air tools so it went very well. appreciate the tutorial! note: make sure you have something to hang the calipers up on the upper control arms. makes cleaning the pistons and calipers much easier and they are out of the way so you can easily swap the rotors. this guys video was very thorough. DO WATCH YOUR BRAKE FLUID LEVEL CLOSELY! I HAD TO SIPHON SOME OUT.

    Thank you so much for this well made video. When I did my brake job, all the videos focused on the rear brakes bc of the ebrake.
    I’ve done a lot of brake jobs but wanted to see the details of this particular car. Still, until you said it, it never occurred to me why the pins were so hard to remove from the back side of the caliper. Also it never occurred to me to turn the wheel so the brakes were easier to see. Of course can only do that on the front but it still helps.

    You correctly pointed out the lift or jack points under the bmw. however, you then said use a jack stand. you have already used the jack point with the hydraulic lift, so where do you position the jack without damaging the bmw sills.?

    Hello so a shop recently did my front brakes and they make a creaky sound when I depress them a bit like the sound at 12:22 did they forget to lubricate something? When in park as well and I press the brake it makes the sound too

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  4 місяці тому

      Hello, Hard to say what might be going on. Do they make noise when braking and rolling forward? If so, you should have it checked by the installer. Brakes can make a crunching noise while stationary and turning the wheel left to right.

    • @domcars
      @domcars 4 місяці тому

      @@AskTheCarExperts Yeah the noise only happens when applying the brake even in park so I know it’s not a suspension issue. I’m thinking maybe something got stuck where the pad slides back and forth

    This was extremely helpful on the front of our 2018 X3 m40i. Brembo recently released ceramic, low dusting pads for the front and rear of this car so I tackled it this morning. Especially appreciated the side note on not using the paste on the rails of the pads as the pads have a specially coated shim that obviates the need for such paste. Now to bed them and see how they stop, and if they’re cleaner than the originals!

    Question, if you install aftermarket pads like from EBC, what's the adhesion procedure ? What's different with install points ? Grease and adhesives ?

  • @talkingwithcars
    @talkingwithcars 3 місяці тому +1

    Great Video! Can't wait to replace mine now.....can you explain the "glue" a little more at the pistons? What brand pad did you use? Do you need to use brake pad adhesive (red bottle) with aftermarket brands like EBC?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  3 місяці тому +1

      The parts are OEM. The pads come with the adhesive because these are not floating calipers. The pistons when they retract allow for the small air gap to prevent constant pad to rotor contact. The glue on the pads stick to the piston surfaces and the lip ring seal allows for the retraction and the air gap needed 😀

    Do you need to open brake fluid tank cap to allow you to push pistons back in?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Рік тому +2

      Thank you! No, the air will vent out but be cautious not to allow the fluid level to get too high. You can open the cap to make pressing the caliper back easier and monitor the fluid level. Brake fluid will destroy paint so it is important not to let it overflow.

    Depending on how much you like your customer, would advise taping near the pin slots with some masking tape. Mayhew punches with the extended shaft works wonders.

      @@AskTheCarExperts Always welcome. Some other pointers that may make it easier on yourself would be dousing the pins with a penetrant lube to allow easier sliding, you can wash it off after installation if you want.
      I typically crack the bleeder line open and wedge a mini-prybar to make things easier between the piston retraction. The bleeder line open is very effective, sometimes you can even use your fingers to push in the pistons.

      @AskTheCarExperts  Рік тому +1

      Hello, If the fluid is low then you would top it off but if the reservoir is close to full it should not go down to much.

    Question. I just need to replace the pads. Will I harm the rotor when pushing the piston with a screw driver?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Рік тому +1

      If you catch just the outer edge you should be fine. Just be gently when prying it a bit. You only need to clear the lip of the rotor if any. Then take the caliper off and use the old pad and some pliers to compress the piston. This will help keep the rotor safe.

    Does it work on LCI with break regen?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Рік тому +1

      Yes Brake regeneration does not actually use the brakes. When you brake the alternator slows the vehicle sends the power back to the battery for charging. Brakes take over at certain times but the vehicle is slowed using engine braking.

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  11 місяців тому

      Hello. Most modern BMWs have electronic parking brake. You have two options. Use a scan tool that can put them in service mode. Or use a brake tool. I do this in my videos on rear brakes.
