Hey Matt, I have a fun story for you. In 2020 I got owned trading alt coins so since then I've done nothing but hodl bitcoin. At one point I was skipping meals for months at a time so I could DCA my lunch money. This past weekend a friend of mine told me that his buddy from college made $8M last month trading meme coins so last night I took a small amount of cash and bought a few coins on Solana. I was joking with my buddy that I immediately felt like a drug addict because I was checking the prices every two minutes and by the time I woke up this morning I had already lost over 60% of my money. It just goes to show that no matter how far along you think you are along the btc path fear and greed can always creep in. On the bright side this was a nice slap in the face to get me refocussed on the reasons why I got into bitcoin in the first place. Back on the btc grind.
Getting rich on meme coins is really no different than gambling. Can you do it? Yes. Is it likely? No, not unless you're one of the insiders who have coins pre-launch.
Same. I swore off anything but Bitcoin but got roped into stx and it's derivatives. I jumped out in profit but watched some of them tank. The closest I get now is liquid bitcoin
I somehow got lucky with the major alts but now I'm getting desperate to trade them all for btc, hoping for a good alt season and not a youidiot season

Thanks Matt, I appreciate your efforts in showing the Jade +. I really don't like having to rely on the Jade server to sign transactions. Does the cold card Q rely on a similar situation? Great review. My only critique of the Jade Plus - they should have made it similar to a CC Q model with a QWERT keyboard and bigger screen. Placed the price point near the CC Q cost. The Q is just so easy to use. I like the Jades too but the use of the QWERT keyboard is now the standard IMHO. I posted this critique on X on the Jade account. Curious your thoughts and maybe we could make a push for Blockstream to work on the Jade Plus Plus
Are you against connecting a hardware wallet to a computer via usb for transactions? If so, is any particular air gapped method more secure than others?
I think it's theoretically more secure and it is what I use. For me, using Bluetooth or connecting to an internet-connected device should be done with a secure element chip but it really is secure either way
So long as you keep it away from all cameras you should be okay. I like to have it accessible in case I want to make a transaction but the QR process with the phone takes longer but is just as secure so you have both options
Thank you Matthew- saw an ad for this new device and i’m glad you covered it. Curious to get your thoughts on 2FA protection via blockstream jade for those intimidated by a multi-sig setup.
Hardware wallets don't always store your private keys..you can use some hardware wallets (including Jade) to generate a key, then record that key on paper in qr code format, and then automatically erase that key upon switching that device off.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Jade Classic is already well-reviewed over several years and is a very trusted piece of equipment. This new version simply seems to be a fancier model.
I'm a little confused on the way that it uses the pin and connects to blockstream. Am I required to use blockstream's node, thus disclosing all of my transactions to them, or am I able to connect to my own node to send and receive transactions?
I dont have tangem but I believe it's different because tangem stores your seed on the chip that has the security of like bank cards, passports etc. or whatever. If Im not mistaken you don't see your seed ever and you just need to not lose all 3 cards. I am not 100% though
Addresses starting with BC1 are all onchain. ( layer one, original bitcoin layer ) also other addressess which are long... lightning addresses are weird looking and short
Hey Matthew, love everything you do thank you. This jade plus looks interesting! Your thoughts on Plus vs Coldcard mk4? And would you consider doing a follow up video on air gapping the plus with a micro sd? Again thank you!
Hey Matt, what are your thoughts on seed signer? In my opinion private keys should not be stored on hardware wallets. And by doing so you create a clear line between the protocol, the hardware and the keys. What are your thoughts?
Why shouldn't private keys be stored on a hardware wallet? What makes it safer to store them in a QR code or metal plate where they are clearly viewable to anyone who finds them?
@Bitcoin_University are you trusting jade or coldcard a 100%? And you you telling me that you have not written your private keys down and they are only in your head and the HW?
Hey Mathew, any thoughts on keystone 3 pro with bitcoin only firmware ? You’ve never mentioned it so was just wondering as it seems like a great one. Also how about the trezor safe 5? I just started using them recently for my first hardware wallets. Are they as safe and comparable to coldcard/jade ?
I cannot recommend the hardware wallets of any company that offers shitcoin support, even if some of their wallets are BTC-only. It's unethical to support shitcoins, and ultimately quite bad for customers, since they will all lose value against BTC
@ appreciate the quick response! Totally understand. Leaning towards grabbing a coldcard Q in the future. Is that the best of the best at the moment as far as ethics/safety/advanced features ?
It looks very nice. Hopefully confirming your seed phrase doesn't involve clicking through all off the BIP-39 words. Zoo is word number 2048, the last on the list. My only other concern, due to paranoia is that Blockstream will have a record of you making a transaction at a specific time and IP address that can be correlated with the mempool and then the block that records the transaction when it is mined.
If that's your fear, you can just sign a transaction and wait a few blocks or a few days even, before you broadcast it. But in any case I don't think it's even possible for them to know when you sign a transaction with the device
I am looking to buy my first hardware wallet and this looks too complicated for a newbie....I don't understand half of what you're talking about. This is why people leave their money on an exchange.
You said one of the advantages of the Jade Plus is that it can be used with QR Code Codes, Bluetooth or USB cable. Isn’t that the same for the Jade Classic?
in my optinion ( holder of 3 jade classic wallet ) theres no difference between this and the classic one. only the bigger screen and apprearnce. also like matt said the secure element. id stick with jade classic
yes. The camera is much better on the Plus so instead of taking maybe 20 seconds and needing to move the camera around to scan the QR, I bet it is pretty instant
Thank you. I think I'd only ever allow access on my phone to a wallet that had a small amount of BTC on it. In which case, I might even trust a hot wallet on my phone. But I'm not at the point where it's necessary to give it a lot of thought.
For warm storage, maybe, but not for cold storage since Snowden revealed state actors build backdoors into most hardware components. Snowden vulnerabilities mean any hardware wallet can leak information via USB, power supplies, NFC, and/or WiFi, and, per Ken Thompson, you can't even detect this. Which means you can't trust your private keys to any electronic device unless it is fully signal-isolated. That means the only safe hardware wallet is a one-time-use signal-isolated burner. Since it's signal-isolated, a software wallet running on any cheap disposable phone is most cost-effective. Physically destroy the burner after use and then keep a watch-only wallet on your daily driver devices. You only need the burner for PSBT signing and you use OTP to secure your physical seed phrase. Accept no substitutes - that's the only way you can be sure.
@@Bitcoin_University I feel like I would lose that little thing. I had a thumbdrive with all my pictures on it and it disappeared. Id be nervous with that little thing
You can pair the Jade Plus with Sparrow and use it with your own node or a public node. You can also use it with Blockstream Green desktop and I believe point to your own node that way too
I‘ve done some research and read that a part of the wallet private key is encrypted and stored on the pin server. Is that true? I understand from your video that it only stores a merge of your pin and your wallet seed in a encrypted way on the jade. And the pin server stores only a encryption key (kind of a public key) that unlocks your jade in combination with the pin (like private encryption key). Would appreciate your thoughts on it as the idea of storing part of the private key, even encrypted, would be a point worth thinking about. Thanks a lot for this review.
I think the seed is split into 2 "secrets" with one being on the device secured by the pin and the other on their server. Only the pin can connect the 2 secrets and sign if that makes sense
@@elliotgaray6152 I contacted Blockstream and that is their response: „No part of your private key ever leaves Jade. Your private key is decrypted on Jade, with necessary decryption data stored on the blind oracle/virtual secure element. Your PIN, combined with blind oracle data, is used to recreate the decryption key when trying to unlock your wallet.“
I need help. I just got a blockstream Jade and I added my bitcoin on there. When bitcoin rises will my bitcoin in my jade go up as well or is it just frozen?
@Bitcon_Universty thanks for the video I really liked it and I hope you get more views from this too. I cant find any links leading to information if having bitcoin stored in Jade will accrue more money as bitcoin continues to rise
Hardware wallets are like storing the digital keys to your car. Your digital keys allow you to unlock the car. And your car is worth as much as someone will give you for it. You could also think of it like storing a nugget of gold in a drawer, though that analogy is not as precise
Question: if some has your seed phrase, how will they access your bitcoin? Don’t they also need to know the correct address? Or it a case of using a script to churn through all know public addresses, trying seed phrase, until one unlocks? Is that computer intense? Or fairly easy?
If someone has your seed, they can easily and directly derive all public and private keys and all addresses and use them to move your BTC to an address that they control the private keys to
This is very easy to do: just enter the 12 word seed into any software or hardware wallet as a recovery and then sign a transaction to send all the BTC out
I only wish hardware wallets like these "high-end" were so inexpensive like a meal so the threshold for new users aren't that high even to store a few thousands of Satoshis.
The only problem with that is if the threshold is too low people may not take it seriously. Personally I wouldn’t even look at a hardware wallet that costs 15 or 20 bucks, and I feel like many brand new BTC users would think the same. But maybe I have a certain bias for being in the space too long.
I have an original jade. When I set up green wallet and paired it with my jade I saw that there was an archived legacy segwit account. I emailed them but they seemed confused and said it was normal. Can you verify that for me on yours?
maybe uve bought it used? when u use it first time it must says "uninitialzied" regardless. just reset the device, and check if its geniun ,. then u should be safe to use it. i think u saw something else.
@@lazylonewolf how easy is it to use multi-sig. I am getting the Plus while having the classic already. Is it worth multi-sig? I am worried about losing a wallet or something.
I don't know if my comment is being deleted on purpose (I hope not) but here it is again: "When you want to sign a transaction, you enter your PIN to unlock the Jade, then the Jade communicates through Blockstream Green with a Blockstream server, requesting a decryption key. Once it receives that key, it allows you to sign transactions." Sounds pretty much like you need to ask Blockstream permission for sending every transaction
my question is when he explains that you can factory reset your device and then temporary sign while the server is down, does this mean you can bypass the server being down or will you have to essentially enter your seed in another wallet to recover?
Sir Kratter, I just watched Session's guide to the Bitkey Wallet. Is it just me or does it not require writing down the 12/24 words? I don't think that was mentioned in his video. Good for beginners who are scared of writing down words?
Yes, Bitkey is basically a version of multisig, and doesn't require writing down a seed. It's a great wallet for true beginners, but I personally prefer having a seed that I can take anywhere and put in a different hardware wallet if necessary

The pin is just that, a pin
You're right. I made a new seed on jade then wiped it and recovered it with a new pin and it works
Thank you!
is this similar to what tangem does? it does not expose any seed phrases when you create a wallet. dont know if that is preferable tbh
I dont have tangem but I believe it's different because tangem stores your seed on the chip that has the security of like bank cards, passports etc. or whatever. If Im not mistaken you don't see your seed ever and you just need to not lose all 3 cards. I am not 100% though
Are all app bugs fixed?
Hey Matt if you have the regular Jade is it worth to upgrade to the plus?
I bought a Jade months ago, and I don't think it's worth the upgrade quite yet, unless you want to use them both for a 2-of-3 multisig.
Does the jade create a new wallet address utxo each time there is a transaction? So the holding wallet isn't exposed with a already spent utxo?
The jade just signs the transaction. The wallet software is what handles utxos
Was this test you showed involving lightning or liquid network? Or was it on chain?
On-chain
If money is no issue, is the BS Jade Plus better than the ColdCard Q + Sparrow?
Great video!
Probably still Coldcard, it's just so much more advanced.
Thanks ! 🎉
I am looking to buy my first hardware wallet and this looks too complicated for a newbie....I don't understand half of what you're talking about. This is why people leave their money on an exchange.
These hardware wallets are great and very easy to use for beginners:

Maybe you need to invest some more time learning then? Or just keep on with a victim mindset and whine about it when you get rugged off an exchange.

Good morning Matthew, UA-cam blocks so many of my comments for some reason - any way to email/reach out to you with a video idea?
mattkratter@gmail.com
@@Bitcoin_University I emailed you, thank you! :)
How's the battery? I think the previous Jade was slightly disappointing on this front.
Hi, can the seeded keys be changed by the owner?
Yes
Is it possible to choose between which UXTOs you send out of green mobile app? Thank you in advance
Yes it is
@@JoseMedina-gf4cu I just looked it up. It seems they call it Coin Control. Haven't tried it myself though, Sparrow is still what I use.
Can this Jade hardware wallet be paired with Sparrow Wallet?
Yes
Regular Jades on discount too.
What is the proper response to TSA who ask what it is?
Tell them exactly what it is?
Storage device. Which is what it is.
@@Gr8Incarnate Bad idea. Would you give them access to it too, and let them take it into the back for 'inspection'?
@@Gr8Incarnate Make sure you have everything backed before before you take it somewhere where it could be lost of course.
@@p8700-z5q And why would you give them access to it? Also, what makes you think TSA won't know what a hardware wallet is?
Thank you. I think I'd only ever allow access on my phone to a wallet that had a small amount of BTC on it. In which case, I might even trust a hot wallet on my phone. But I'm not at the point where it's necessary to give it a lot of thought.
Great content, thank you guys! How much BTC has JD Vance?
Accept no substitutes - that's the only way you can be sure.
interesting
Why do they make it so small. You can barely hold it in your hand

Does this wallet have a desktop app? Who's blockchain is it looking at when you're using the app?
You can pair the Jade Plus with Sparrow and use it with your own node or a public node. You can also use it with Blockstream Green desktop and I believe point to your own node that way too
Is block stream green app similar to the sparrow app?
Yep!
Great content as always Matt. What do you think of companies like the new AnchorWatch which is a BTC storage company with 100% insurance guarantee?
@@elliotgaray6152 I contacted Blockstream and that is their response:
„No part of your private key ever leaves Jade. Your private key is decrypted on Jade, with necessary decryption data stored on the blind oracle/virtual secure element. Your PIN, combined with blind oracle data, is used to recreate the decryption key when trying to unlock your wallet.“
I was just curious to know where this wallet was manufactured ?
Blockstream is in Canada, so I assume that's where they manufacture it.
@@lazylonewolf It would be good to know if it was manufactured overseas, just in case...
Cold Fart is my favorite 3:11
Can you review Keystone??
Cold card Q + VSE. We need more good HW wallets
What is VSE?
If someone has your seed, they can easily and directly derive all public and private keys and all addresses and use them to move your BTC to an address that they control the private keys to
This is very easy to do: just enter the 12 word seed into any software or hardware wallet as a recovery and then sign a transaction to send all the BTC out
Thanks
Stupid question - I already use a jade with blockstream green. I can buy a jade plus, restore with my seed and keep trucking?
Yes, you can. Good question, not a stupid question
Or use them for a 2-of-3 multisig
@@Bitcoin_University thanks Matt
Yes, you can also perform a factory reset on your old jade to eliminate the seed in case you wont use it again.
@@lazylonewolf how easy is it to use multi-sig. I am getting the Plus while having the classic already. Is it worth multi-sig? I am worried about losing a wallet or something.
I don't know if my comment is being deleted on purpose (I hope not) but here it is again:
"When you want to sign a transaction, you enter your PIN to unlock the Jade, then the Jade communicates through Blockstream Green with a Blockstream server, requesting a decryption key.
Really cool device!
