What’s the purpose of Sparrow? Why not send directly from one hardware wallet to another?
Hello, Matthew.
Are you able to explain the functional differences between a bitcoin node operator and a bitcoin miner? I believe the node operator validate the blocks created by the miners and accept them. However, I'd like a clear way to explain that to family.

@@graceandpanic9281 All hardware wallets need software to connect to that will link them to the Bitcoin network
P.S. and thanks for following me back, on Twitter. I have like, no followers, and am on it rarely, but I just wanted to support Elon in this way, although I question some of his other choices.
@@Bitcoin_University from Gracie's comment, you can use the hardware wallets software, ie - Ledger live on your phone.. can you use sparrow along with a jade and use it all on your phone rather than connecting to a laptop? Thanks matt
I like how you seem to have a rhythm to how you describe things it helps me understand and retain what you’re saying. Anyway keep it up I enjoy the free educational content.
Thank you
Excellent comment, very astute.
Haha appreciate the shoutout Matt! Clearly we’re always learning, and it is good to assume anything connected to the internet is compromised. Your info is always spot on and I look forward to your videos every morning👏

Colin, were you the dog crap guy? You are a great sport. I loved Matthew’s response, and your resilience.
@@fowchiiiliedpuppiesdied I’m not sure I can claim being the dog crap guy, so that may be someone else’s 10 seconds of fame… I’m glad I can provide some entertainment🤘
Thank you Matt for all you do. I listen to alot of other crypto youtubers and I absolutely hate them shilling all these crap tokens to their audience that will only drop by 99.999% compared to Bitcoin. So sad. You're the only one that seems to care for your viewers ❤
This was awesome. You've done wallet videos in the past, but the landscape is always changing. Thank you for the video. Would you consider doing a similar updated video on setting up your own node (Umbrel vs. Start9, etc)? Hardware suggestions?
Thanks for your coverage of Seedsigner! One thing worth noting also - you don't have to build one yourself - I ordered a prebuilt one and it works great and only cost a bit more than the kit. Also, worth mentioning - The entry of a pass phrase is WAY easier with a Seedsigner than with either Coldcard or Jade. Also one other thing: Seedsigner (and I think Jade also) don't have a secure element and thus do not store the seed phrase - rather you can initialize the device from a QR encoded seed phrase - thus the same measures to secure your seed backup are required for that QR code. Thanks again for your excellent educational content - much appreciated!
I’m completely confused, but it seems like a pretty interesting comment.
Bought a passport wallet specifically so it would look like a phone and wouldn't raise any question on international flights. On the first flight from Montenegro to Serbia the worker on the security line took it out of the bag, looked me in the eyes and asked: "What is it? Some kind of phone?!". Wasn't pleasurable experience. After the flight I realized I also had a ledger and a trezor in the backpack pockets, nobody cared about those.
Interesting data points

@@AshEllieRose yeah, but then again, who buys a calculator these days when you can do it with a smartphone? I think making it look like an USB stick is one of the best options.

Many thanks, Matt. I got it now. I didn’t realise that the attack vector was the Trezor Suite interacting with the Trezor HWW. So, I will re-watch your Sparrow software wallet video.
Just to be clear, I don't think that Trezor is a bad actor today, but companies can always turn evil over time
@@Bitcoin_University I also should have said that the Trezor suite could become a possible attack vector rather than saying that they already are. 🙏🏼
One of the best channels out rn 💯
You've answered one of my questions anyway, when you informed someone that buying a better cold storage device and entering the seed words on it, then smashing the old device wouldn't improve security. I'm loathe to pay the fees to move my assets and anyhow I never did any transactions whatsoever in last couple of years. About once a month I plug in my "almost as good" device which unfortunately also does "dog crap" and view the balance for a couple of seconds before disconnecting. But I still am nervous while doing that.
As always appreciate matt keep uploading you absolute legend
I appreciate you making us aware that you don't censor or delete comments. For some reason, my replies to our discussion on yesterday's video stopped showing up. I thought I was being censored for some reason. It was rather frustrating after spending the time to type up a long reply. Tried to repost multiple times, and it just won't go through.
I'm really sorry about that-- so frustrating for everyone involved
This problem has been following me for some time, and it gets worse and worse over time, so that at least 90% of my comments are auto-removed. Here's a little tip I've started using to make sure my comments stay put. I copy them to a text editor and keep an eye out to see if they're removed. If they are, I use ChatGPT to craft a new version. I posted the prompt I use in another comment here (do a browser search for "UA-cam" to find it)
To circumvent my comments being erroneously flagged and removed, I've started saving them in a text editor as a precaution. This lets me keep track and, if necessary, I use ChatGPT to create a revised version. For those interested, I've detailed the prompt I utilize for this in another comment-simply search "UA-cam" here to find it. BTW, I had to use it for this comment too..
I've devised a little workaround for keeping my comments from being unjustly removed: I always make a backup by copying them into a text editor. This allows me to monitor if they get deleted. Should that occur, I turn to my favorite LLM to help rephrase them. Look for my other comment on this page (just search for "UA-cam") to see the specific prompt I use.
@@Bitcoin_University Here's a handy strategy that I even used for this comment (and 90% of them in general at this point). I first save a copy in a text editor. This way, I can quickly check if they've been flagged and removed. If that happens, I seek AI assistance to reformulate my comment. You can find further details in another one of my comments here.
I love this channel, and I love Bitcoin!
Thank you. What topic/question should I cover next?
@7:11 You can absolutely transfer your seed phrase from a ledger or trezor etc and then use a cold card to move that bitcoin to a new cold card without ever touching the leger or trezor and never opeing ledger live etc. Like Matt says, don;t just import your seed phrase on a cold card and leave it there but also if you have the skills to do it, it is absolutly possible to move it without ever exposing your self by using a compromised hardware or software. Matt if you want help making a video explaining how to do this I can help.
What Matthew has managed to do is create arguably the most easily digestible, accurate Bitcoin information store on the internet.
But for me, what is even more interesting is that it has "exposed" the sheer depth of information there is in and around Bitcoin.
There are already many video's on this channel, but even Matthew's exhaustive summaries could be revisited 3/6 months later, with the rapidly changing nature of the ecosystem. And, there are many, many more video's that can be made. The breadth and depth of potential discussions around Bitcoin is truly mind-boggling, and people will be asking questions for the next few years, at least.
Thank you-- the rabbit hole is indeed deep
Hi Matt, I always watch your videos, they are very informative and to the point. I absolutely agree with you by not entertaining the shitcoins as we all know 99.99% of them are scams talking from personal experience. I always say any project has a group of people behind it and controlling it then should flag you.
Thanks for the information! 👍🏼
Cheers again for the great content Matt!
Most accurate technical info on the internet. Thanks Matt, your info is always so timely.
Mathew- You are awsome!
Hey Matt. Thank you for years of great info. Maybe you could go into depth why not to use old phones afor wallets? I have a young friend who was told to do that and I'm trying to educate him but not finding much online. Thx again
Interesting to note I've had two Cold cards fail. They did replace them without a problem and have good customer service. I've never had any other cold storage device fail.
How did they fail? Would be curious to know
Same here freedomfight1933. I was going to comment on that as well, they did replace it. I also ended up getting the foundation passport it feels a little more robust. Still waiting on the ColdCard Q. To answer your question Matt...."I plugged my CC in and it showed "bricked" after connecting to power.
I disconnected and reconnected power. No luck. No one else had tried using it and no I did not forget the password and no I did not attempt unlocking it 13 times wrong.
My storage is standard.. not too hot, not too cold, not humid, no direct sun."
@@mjmj240 Thanks for sharing
@@mjmj240 maybe someone was curious and tried out a few password guesses?
@Bitcoin_University the screen just wouldn't turn on, completely blank. Even though the green light was on indicating power. And that was the first one after it worked for a bit and had signed a transaction. The 2nd one did the exact same thing straight out of the package! So the screen never even turned on once. Also, green light no screen. The first one never had any issue with signing in or anything that would have made it brick. It was just one day the screen didn't turn on. The 3rd one is working so far but really new still. Thanks for this channel btw, love it!
I’m quite happy with my jade/iPhone combo.
If I understand correctly the vulnerability won't put you at risk unless someone has your laptop? I was going to get a Coldcard and a new MacBook Air until I saw the warning. So many hurdles. I was set to go this route now I have to learn how to do air gap. I'm not worried about my ability but it makes inheritance instructions VERY COMPLICATED. I know there are multisig companies but every alternative is cumbersome. I wish there were better solutions right now. Bitkey looked promising but probably not for larger sums. Casa announced a new inheritance model that is an improvement I'll have to look into that deeper. In the meantime are you suggesting air gap only? Thanks for all the great content you are putting out there!
Thank you very much for your posts, Matthew. Your content is consistently level headed and well thought through, and clearly communicated.
Would you be willing to cover best options for multisig, assuming someone has one of the cold wallets you usually recommend?
Thanks again.
🙌 ALWAYS great videos!
That passport is a handsome HW device.
Yes, and very solid too

Ya and could pass at 1st glance like a retro phone.
Plus they have that bait and try to hack this for 1 BTC kinda put their money where their mouth is.
Gonna have to get one.
2 months or so ago trezor got hacked and sent a phishing email out (obv didn't click anything) but been kinda skittish on them since.
Thanks a bunch.
One more super informative video. Thanks.
Thank you for the videos Mr. Kratter! Have a great day! :)
Thanks Matthew!
Could you please do a video about the Microstrategy Short Squeeze?
I just got trezor back when you put out some videos recommending it. And I never upgraded it ever. Hopefully I’m not making a mistake or crazy for keeping everything on there.
trezor is safe, make sure you do your updates
@@thinkblue8089 really? I thought you should avoid doing updates?
Fantastic once again. Thanks!
Matt, thanks for your guidance. What if you just use the BS green software on your computer or phone with the jade?
That's fine as well. It's a bit less self-sovereign since you are trusting BS's node and software, but still fine from a security perspective. Just make sure you have a backup plan if Blockstream were to disappear or be taken offline. Practice doing a recovery with another wallet
I would like a video about the safest way to sweep a paper wallet, transferring the funds to a Coldcard.
What about an iCoin wallet? Interested in your thoughts even though it stores ETH, which may cause you to otherwise dismiss it
I was asking the same thing, but I do know now that it is not open sourced
watching your videos form last year ,Thank you for giving so much valuable information . I have a silly question in my mind , if i create sparrow multisig wallet , and for some reason government take down sparrow and electrum , then how can i restore my multisig ?
Thankyou for mentioning support for foundation passport. I have one and have been reluctant to depend on since i never heard you show any support. I have a question on the passport, as a Boomer, the bigger screen is very helpful along with the phone like keys.
Matt have you heard of coldcard Q issues with signing a transaction? Keeps saying " no tags written" .. running nunchuk and Q. Funds are still showing on chuk. Receiving is not the issue. Nfc works fine when setting up the outbound transaction. Stumped. Think its a bad wallet?
Great video.
I wish sparrow showed the value history of your sats stack like ledger live does, security compromised yes but man did they nail the user simplicity for their software. Is there any software which shows your total balance like ledger does but with higher security open source like sparrow?
Nunchuk
It’s probably better to just view the history of your sats accumulating rather than their total USD value. Thats more short-time horizon behavior
Blue wallet watch only option
Do you find the passport is easier to use than the cold card? Seems like it is pretty user friendly.
It’s Easier for sure
May you please make a video for Shamir backup vs multi-sig?
Yet again, another very informative Matt. I'm sure adding another step to Sparrow will add greater security, but does it add further complexity when selling some BTC?
Holding your own keys always adds more complexity since you most probably will need to send to an exchange to sell. If you leave your BTC on Coinbase, it's convenient when you need to sell, but you might end up getting your BTC lost or frozen. If you want to be self-sovereign, you can hold your own private keys and buy stuff directly with BTC, rather than first converting to fiat
@@Bitcoin_University thanks Matt. I get all that and in fact that's exactly what I'm doing. I have a cold wallet. Maybe my question wasn't phrase correctly, but it just seems like additional hoops putting it on a jade then going through sparrow. Well, I'm sure the process is straightforward. Once you get the hang of it it just seems like a bit more work and complications and potential for failure in lost coins. Thank you
Great video Matt! What are your wallet recommendations for someone that wants to get their feet wet with a small amount of Bitcoin? Would be nice to test the waters so to say before taking the big plunge. Thanks!
Hey Matt thanks for the information, if someone was on a ledger live wallet they should move their btc to a cold card wallet?
Thx Matthew
The official DEX in By-bit has huge lags!!!
I just done a vid showing

The funny thing is, that once you've set up your hardware wallet, you never actually need it. This is because you hodl forever!
That can be true, but if you have 100% of you money in BTC and are living on a BTC standard, you'll still need it to pay living expenses
Correct !
Are you at all concerned that ColdCard is made in Canada?
Can you do a review and explanation for the Block\Cashapp new hardware wallet?
Thank you for your good videos! Could you please share your opinion on the Electrum hot wallet?
Do you think people should get the coldcard Q now for wait for the market to test it first?
Hi, Matthew, I wonder whether I can change my seed. I bought a small amount of BTC years ago using Exodus in my PC. I lost interest and forgot about it. Later, due to your sound advice, I bought a hard wallet to transfer my BTC now worth 3 times more, but I used the seed originally generated by Exodus. I think it was a mistake to use that seed instead of of a new one, but I didn't know if the wallet supports several seeds or how to transfer from Exodus while having a new seed generated by the hard wallet. Thanks you so much for all your videos.
What are your thoughts on the Tangem card?
❓ Matthew do you have much experience with start9 and running that operating system on raspberry pie 5
I've done that with Umbrel, but not Start9. Currently waiting for a new Start9 server to arrive in the mail. Raspberry pi's performance is not always good, especially when you are searching BTC blockchain history.
@@Bitcoin_University the Pi 5 with 8gb ram significantly better performing than the previous iteration of it
should we buy the old coldcard or new coldcard, does it matter? considerations?
Coldcard MK4 and Coldcard Q both on sale right now at Coinkite. I would get one of those models
Do you have 100% of your networth in btc ? If so how do you pay for your usual expenses ?
Thank you sir
Hi I have a noob question: what happens to the hardware wallet pin when you switch to a new pc? Do you have to set up a new pin by entering the seedphrase again?
Does the passphrase (25th word) live on the blockchain? or is it ONLY to protect the physical wallet? Can I have multiple seed phrases on a singe wallet? (the Mk4 or "Q") or another?
How can I move my sparrow wallet from my old laptop to new one? What option do i choose? Is it safe?
You just download Sparrow on your new laptop:
sparrowwallet.com/download/
@@Bitcoin_University Thanks, but I've already downloaded sparrow onto the new pc.... do I need to import my wallet from my old pc? I see an export/import option.
Matthew: I listen to your recent video about Trezor and I am displeased with them. What would be the most anonymous or pseudonymous way to take BTC off of a Trezor and put it on a new wallet such as a ColdCard?
Asking for a friend.
Sound advice my friend. 👍 the shitcoin comments were hilarious.
What are your thoughts on the seed signer?
Great project that I discuss at the end of this video
The one question nobody addresses is: how safe are EEPROMs in wallets or memory sticks? Data safety of a solid state memory is lower than that of a hard disk and even they experience failures like head crashes etc.
This does not really matter all that much if you are looking at a PC - you'll have cloud storage anyway - but if your financial future is stored on a small chip, life could suddenly get very interesting.
Matthew, why is a hardware wallet safer than a paper wallet if you have to keep a paper backup of your seed phrase anyway?
Hardware wallets are great for travel-- if you bring your seed phrase on a piece of paper to the airport, people may see it, or you may get robbed. You also need a hardware wallet when it comes time to send Bitcoin, so that you can safely sign a Bitcoin transaction without revealing your keys to the internet. I don't think there's a good safe way to sign a transaction using a paper wallet
What is your opinion on putting the seedphrase on encrypted USB flashdrives that you create trough a laptop that isn't connected to the internet combined with a Jade to approve transactions?
I am always worried if someone finds your single metal backup that they have instant access to it, but if it was on encrypted USB sticks you create a buffer in which you can act while it is gone.
If for example your house would burn down you would lose access to the backup phrase or worse a firefighter could find it. I simply believe it isn't secure enough if u don't have access to safely store your private key in multiple locations.
Is a USB Scheme like that even an option in your opinion?
Is there a meaningful difference between airgaping your hardware wallet using the QR code method and using the USB cable?
Is there an exploit that can be used against USB users that can't be used against QR users?
In other words, can the private keys be lifted from the hardware wallet when it is physically connected to the machine?
CAN YOU EXPLAIN ELLIPAL BEING CLOSED SOURSE. IM PLANNING ON MOVING OUT OF ROBINHOOD I KNOW ELLIPAL IS AIRGAPPED FOR NOW IS IT OK TO MOVE TO ELLIPAL. I DONT QUIT UNDERSTAND CLOSED SOURCE
7:45 you didn't answer his question correctly, so I will, yes you can enter your seed phrase that was given to you from one device like a trezor or hot wallet online, and input that seed into any other wallet and it will still link to your original bitcoin
Hi. When getting a new seed phrase, should you test that seed with a different hardware wallet? Or is sending a small amount of btc to the hardware wallet, wiping it, then recovering the seed good enough?
I think both methods work well
@@Bitcoin_University thank you. Love the channel and your work.
I just found and updated my old keepkey. Do you have any opinions on using it?
If one uses a Trezor and sets up a Passphrase on the Trezor with intention of having a "hidden" wallet, when you then open up the Trezor it offers you the option of accessing a normal wallet or the "hidden" wallet. This does not seem helpful in countering a $5 wrench attack. Is there any cold wallet that actually provides a truely "hidden" wallet? I'd be so greatful if anyone knows one! Thanks!
You could do a double-bluff, where you have a small amount on the main wallet, and a larger (believable, but still small relative to your main stack) on a hidden wallet. Then put your main stack on a different hidden wallet. Personally, I don't use Trezor Suite, but connect through Electrum, but I think you'd potentially have this issue with any software that you are using (you typically set up your watch addresses in the tool). In my case, I have my main node sitting on a desk, and it is configured with my decoy. Another node out of sight in a closet (on nondescript hardware) that I have configured with my hidden wallet. Another option is to only configure your software to use the hidden wallet at the time you are sending, and then remove the configuration immediately after, so all anyone will see is the config for your decoy.
Thanks!@@paullamb1100
What about samourai wallets?
Would you be able to link a coldcard or Jade if you already downloaded and used the included software? Or will I have to transfer my btc to a new wallet?
Yes, you can pair your Jade or Coldcard with Sparrow using the existing seed that's on the hardware wallet. Super picky best practices is to create a new recovery seed, since Jade touched Green and Blockstream's node
@@Bitcoin_University Thanks, I definitely have to give this a try. I'm hoping that the open source nature of the Jade means that there is no way for them to currently store a seed phrase the way a Ledger potentially can. Moving to Sparrow should then hopefully prevent any future attempts, should Jade become compromised. Thanks Matt!
I use Trezors bitcoin only mode. Is that ok?
Yes, probably fine. Pair your Trezor with Sparrow Wallet instead of using Trezor Suite for more privacy
@@Bitcoin_University Yes you did mention that. Thank you as always Matt!
What would be the best way to buy btc instantly and be able to send? Cb has had me nervous lately and they have 1 week hold for ach.
Swan Bitcoin, River Financial, or Strike-- all good companies, and I'm not being paid by any of them
Do you know of any issues or vulnerabilities with the new MK4 cold card coming out? Is it worth waiting for or should I just get an MK3?
They're both fine-- just don't buy a used one. Just buy directly:
coldcard.com/
@Bitcoin_University Speaking of buying directly, if I bought a Blockstream Jade on the Blockstream official Amazon store would you consider that safe?
@Bitcoin_University Thanks! Do you consider official Amazon stores to be direct? Like say if I bought a Jade from the official Blockstream store on Amazon?
How do you secure a large number of bitcoins so the key is not in the hands of just one person? For instance if you were, say, a large company or maybe a nation state. Asking for an ally.
Multisig, where multiple people (keys) need to sign to send BTC. For example 2/3 multisig where you need signatures from 2 of the 3 keys. You could set up any variation, like 7/12
So I believe you are saying that owning a dedicated laptop for Nodes and transactions only would be just as secure as a hardware wallet? Providing that someone doesn't have physical access to the laptop but myself? It seems a disadvantage for the hardware wallet is it makes it recognizable to some that you may even own Bitcoin. Also traveling with it, if confiscated, seems harder to replace than the laptop. Is this all correct?
His suggestion is to set aside a laptop for the sole purpose of connecting your hardware wallet and conducting transactions. Getting rid of your hardware wallet would mean storing your bitcoin via a "hot connection" which he explains is a bad idea @2:00 in the video.
Jade recommends using their Green app for mobile transactions. Do you think this okay given the "collusion" risks, or would you recommend a different phone app. Thanks!
It's probably fine, but you could also use Nunchuk app on mobile with the Jade
Quick question is single sig with jade better or multi sig (3) with jade, ledger and sparrow hot wallet
Using sparrow
I wouldn't use a hot wallet in a multisig setup. I also wouldn't use Ledger with anything. Single sig with Jade on Sparrow with an optional passphrase is enough to store $1 billion
Thank you so much, extremely grateful for the response.
Is it possible to see your private key in your jade? say if you want to double check your words. Could you explain how to do that, Thanks
BS jade and most other hardware wallets will get you to verify the seed after setting it up. This is the second check. Your seed is converted to a very long number which the jade uses to broadcast transactions. It never actually sends to seed from the device, but rather a key to prove you are in possession of the seed.
Running a node on an old mini mac (2012) with sparrow is ok security wise right? I bough the mini mac for this one application and need to transfer all funds to from Tezor to Coldcard. Pretty scared tbh.
Have you been able to upgrade the mini Mac OS to a more recent version? Sparrow definitely won't support really old versions. Don't be scared-- play around with a tiny amount of money until you get confident. Set up the Coldcard, then wipe it and see if you can do a recovery before sending over all of your BTC. Go slow and take your time. People mess up when they try to rush the learning process. And avoid scammers in all Sparrow telegram rooms. Don't share your recovery seed with anyone
@@Bitcoin_University Sparrow runs on OS 10.3 and I’m on 10.5 but that’s as high as the Mac will allow. I’ve connected the node and it’s all green on the toggle switch on sparrow. Feel a bit sketchy about using the M1 now so wanted a machine to only do bitcoin transaction. Should be ok right?
@@OG-gv5hl You should be fine, though I obviously can't guarantee everything. Test it out with really small amounts of sats and see if the money gets stolen-- it almost certainly won't, but always good to test. If it were me, I would be using the M1 instead. GoFetch vulnerability not a risk since it requires physical access. As long as your private keys remain on your hardware wallet and you confirm everything on your hardware wallet screen, you will be fine. Again, test everything with small amounts of BTC so it won't matter if you make a mistake

What is your opinion about Tangem Cold Wallet? Pls answer thanks 😊
Btc Note Tangem (btc only)
What about Ellipal? Any good?
Just ordered a Tangem for something different
I've had the feeling BTC would be going to 48k as well. Clearing out all my Alts going into BTC and AMC40T only, maybe a little BNB.
Haha true BTC Maximist but i like it
What about Bitkey
Thanks for another update. What are your thoughts on ETH/AMC40T? 👀
Why Sparrow and not electrum. Electrum is possible to connect via Tor
I like Sparrow's layout and UX
DO IP providers give you a hard time to run your own node ? Apparently it uses up a ton of bandwith.
I've never had a problem in the US. It's a myth that it uses a lot of bandwidth, after you finish the initial download. Blockchain size is about 630 GB, but you only need to download that at the beginning
By the way, Blockstream encourages people to still buy on amazon to speed up delivery, which is 2 days. Direct takes several weeks. They should not create that bad incentive. Ship quickly.
Hey Matt, what do you think about the Tangem wallet?
I cannot support any wallet that offers support for altcoins. It's unethical and also creates a wider attack surface on the wallet itself
tangem has sold almost a mil wallets. never been hacked. cards r almost indestructible. cant b interfered wi in transit. generates the seed phrase inside the card or option to see it and store it. there is def a place for it. no downloads. very easy to use. co has been around for around 6 yrs. cards can only b accessed wi yr personal pin. 3 cards backed up. look like credit cards. lose 2 then buy 3 new cards. very affordable.
@@Bitcoin_University Thanks Matthew, you are right. I have another question, if you can find the time. Do you view Bitcoin layer 2 tokens such as STX or RIF in the same way as you view regular altcoins on different blockchains?

Bitkey wallet is very interesting Im just concerned that the Block server might be collecting and keeping data on the users. BTC balance, send and receive info, ip etc. can anyone confirm if they do this or not?
4:54 You are wrong. macOS (like Windows) is proprietary garbage. Therefore both include malware and spyware software built in by default. There is no reason to say that it is better to use a mac over a windows machine, If you are concerned about security, open source software (Linux) is the only way to go.
Yes, of course, but Linux requires a certain level of technical proficiency that you cannot expect from the average person-- it's not a solution for the general public. People should also use more open protocols like Nostr and stuff like Signal but the learning curve has been steep for me and will be for most. I think one approach is to slowly wean people off of big tech through apps like Signal, etc
The Mac at least has a historical track record of being safer. That doesn't guarantee future success, but might be a reasonable indicator. Knock on wood, I've been using Macs since the late '80s and have never had a virus or malware. (I found one a couple times on client computers over the years, mostly back in the '90s, when I did consulting... ie. 100s of systems.) I've had to re-build my Windows install a couple times over just the last few years due to malware (though to be fair, I was playing with GPU mining... so installing things I might otherwise have not).
Is Linux really that much safer once you start installing stuff? I'd think maybe I would be worse off, since I only marginally know what I'm doing.
I would have to ask, why do you assume that cold wallets don't have government back for us? Why should we assume that? Seems the safest thing would be to compile software on our own offline computers but you discourage that in the last video.
That's not a practical solution for 99% of people. Even some prominent Bitcoin OGs have messed things up and lost their BTC that way
@@Bitcoin_University I have a lingering suspicion that the US government will rug all cold hardware wallets if it's possible when they really need it
