I had the pleasure of meeting Gligorić in 1972 and can attest that he was not only a great chess player, but a fine gentleman as well. Four of us -- Gligo, his friend Milan Vukcević (who was a FIDE master and a GM of chess problem composition), a local USCF master, and myself -- went to dinner. Gligorić had a fine sense of humor and he was gracious enough to make me feel like part of the group, even though I was a lowly Class B player.
@GMBenjaminFinegold as a point of interest: not only was Gligoric a great player of KID with black, he is the "inventor" of, perhaps the most frequently played line of it, the Mar del Plata variation. It really should be named after him; but, instead, it's named after the city where he first played it.
GM Finegold is my all-time favorite chess commentator, by far, but I would like to make a little correction, to call "an unknown player" when talking about Antonio Medina Garcia is sort of a misunderstanding. IM Medina was 7 times Spanish Champion, in his long carrer he beat Alekhine, Euwe, Pomar( 7 or 8 times) Denker(twice) Szabo,O'Kelly(twice)Quinteros,Lombardy,Bisguier,Pfleger, Matulovic,Bent Larsen (in Larsen best overall year:1967, although Larsen was completely winning and missed a mate) Donner,Kurajica,Pal Benko(twice) and dozens of many other well known players (Matanovic,Ciocaltea,Julio Kaplan,Bednarsky,Hecht,etc.etc.) . He might be a far lesser player comparing him with Gligoric, but certainly not unknown! And last but not least, 16.Bd2 is not an error, in fact White is still better and there are several strong players's games with that move (including Korchnoi-Reshevsky 1-0) the errors came later.
@@FloydMr0709 Ivanovic, of course! 👏😊 There were many really strong players that are not that well known nowadays, unfortunately. Another example is Ljubomir Ljubojevic.
@Murray his legacy is legendary in Serbia and former Yugoslavia. He was easily among the top 5 - 10 players in the world at his peak, and he lived in the era of Botvinnik, Smyslov, Petrosian, Fischer, etc, to name but a few. Another great Serbian player of the past which is not well known is Ljubomir Ljubojevic - a very energetic, attacking player. If you look up his games, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Great lectures of the past.
I like watching past lectures for the first time again.

This game was so good, I was born the next year 😂

On Kingscrusher he calls an enemy pawn in front of your king an umbrella pawn (as in the Petrosian game) when your king can shelter behind it.
I love these historical series
Historical in more ways than one (CCSCATL, great chess centers of the past.)
Greeting from Montenegro ! Good lesson ! Gliga is a legend !
@FloydMr0709 indeed! Greetings from Serbia!
@@spartanthe300ththermopylae4 Gliga is a hero, we in Montenegro had Bozidar Bonja Ivanovic 🥰

@@SpartanThe300th You are absolutely correct. Yugoslavia was always a chess force 🥰
Just finished watching the first game. What a treat to see a game like that!
Incredible. 29 moves, no captures, and then W resigns.
it also blew my mind. what a game.
Ben, you totally cracked me up starting with the c4 explosive gag, and I was indeed laughing at home when you point it out!
From the “Chessplayers Bobby Fischer Tried to Sue” video series
40:13 "gligoric was black and he's pounding the guys. That's pretty good"
Great NSFW of the past
What a fresh cut, kind of distracting from the lecture tbh. The fade, the line up 👌🧑🍳.
Svetozar backwards is Razotevs, which is a remarkable coincidence.
@K Dub his name Svetozar means something like "Holy Glow" (like Halo) in Serbian.
It's also two letters away from "Svenezar", which is what Ben kept calling him at the start of the video!
Beatiful!
I'll try one: Famous last words: "Goodbye, cruel world".
@12:50, what move would you recommend for White instead of 16. Bd2 (?)
great players of the past of the past
hey its like hans' last gm-norm game
Love this series! Would really like to see one on Capa, but I know he's more positional so maybe you think we'll fall asleep...
He has one on Capa. Just search for great players of the past capablanca.
@@lv20swds Thanks! I didn’t see it at first because it’s not on this channel
If he's done one on Karpov, he's fine with positional players.
@Eidenhoek he has one on Karpov too.
Must be old lecture
Yeah Ben looks like an old badger now 😂
