I met Gligorich in 1972 and got to play a game against him when he visited the university chess club. He was a consummate gentleman and had a great sense of humor. He talked to me as if I was a real chess player and not a USCF 1700 rated patzer. For our game, I drew the Black pieces and we got into the Mar del Plata variation -- a very bad idea on my part. Gligorich was a leading expert in the KID and a pioneer of the Mar del Plata. I resigned on move 28.

Great memories I’m sure. I got to play Reshevsky (I lost) and a 12 year old Hilaru (lost that one too). Very memorable losses 😅
@@banzaiburger9589 I saw Reshevsky once but never played him. It was surprising how small he was. I wanted to say hello to him, but he was in a conversation -- with a 6'8" NBA player. Reshevsky looked like a little kid, but the player (Cedric Maxwell, who was an avid chess player) was looking at him in awe. This was around 1980. The conversation ended when Reshevsky went to go play a simul, in which he won 38, lost 0, and drew 2. Wish I had entered the simul, but only got to watch it.

The only man who had constant contact with Bobby until his death. The match between him and Spassky in Yugoslavia is the reason why Fisher could no longer go to America because Yugoslavia was under sanctions due to the war. The match was played at Sveti Stefan.

Gligo was one of the world-class players for roughly three decades, which says quite a lot about his talent. A very fine player.
Petrosian usually had great difficulty with Gligoric and also lost several games.

I ask Gligoric about Fischer he told me when he comes to Belgrade to visit me we go on Danube on beach to walk and relax but Bobby just ask about opening variation about chess. Stop Bobby talk about chess, enjoy. No one knows that Bobby call Gliga every week but Gliga never speak and just told about they relationship one journalist half year before Gliga died. Great man, great player. I can write about him 10 days what a man he was be..

History before chess engines

That's right, Petrosian normally ate King's Indian for lunch. But not the King's Indian from Glicoric. As I recall, the score of the two in this opening is almost equal, perhaps with a small plus in favour of Petrosian.
I've been playing chess religiously for about 4 years now. I watch chess UA-cam videos basically all day. This is the most instructive chess UA-cam channel available.
If chessdawg and Sagar Shah teamed up for an analysis. Oh my god. I would black out.
I had to pause at 6:23 and think for about 3 minutes. I still don't see why h3. I know he's backed into a corner, but the logic behind h3 escapes me;I know it's the best move because it's Petrosian, is it just a pawn sacrifice? I need your guidance chessdawg
This move just seems nonsensical to me. I understand that it must be the only move but why? Ok, maybe I see it. If black takes the pawn it blocks black's queen from attacking white's queen. And if the pawn advances it is attacked by white's rook. Nevermind, chessdawg. Thanks to your channel I might understand every move of both players or at least think that I do.
Well I may find those moves but it could take me a day.
what a masterpiece of a game. Keep up the good work and do not be afraid of remaking as you will be better in Vol 2, better than the very good you were in this vol 1 these vids will out live both of us.

I think it is humanly impossible to calculate all the variations after black's knight sacrifice on f4. So Gligoric probably acted just gambling based on his intuition, would you agree with that?
Yes, you couldn't calculate that. You had to feel it.

how usual is White's move a4 ? it looks over keen and ignores Kingside developments, was it a mistake or am I being too simplistic ?
It is probably not the most precise, but it looks playable.
Sacrifice was not correct but Tigran didnt find correct reply :)

Nope. Alternative move considerations are most relevant as the game is played out imo.
