- A comparison of the Singer 128 and the Vickers, both 3/4 size vibrating shuttle machines.
EDIT: I should have mentioned in the video, both machines use the same shuttles and bobbins.

Fantastic video. I just bought a 128 to sit along side my 99k. I'm excited!
I always learn something from your videos. I have 25 different machines, Mostly Singers, a few Pfaffs and a Bernina. I love my 201s, but my 128s always impress me, the quality of their stitch is just as good as my 201s.
Really cool to see the close up of the stitch formation!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Bob,
I have a 128 crank action, which is my go to machine for all my jeans top stitching, it takes a heavy thread, both in the top, and shuttle , and sews a perfect stitch every time, even threw multiple layers of denim. We have a few Vickers come on the market, might be tempted to add one to my collection now.
Cheers from New Zealand
I really love the VS machines, they sound so dang cool!
Hi Steve, I have 2 yellow Vickers made ladies. One was my grandmothers, and started me down this rabbit hole. They are branded Monarch Special, sold by the British Sewing Machine Co. But are definitely Vickers. I have a 3rd en route, a black one labelled Vickers in its cabinet. I also have 2 28's, one from 1901, the other from 1892! Just got lucky with my first acquisitions. And I'm also from New Zealand. BTW Yellow ladies: A little rattly but sew beautifully. I sewed a 1/4" foam rubber/cotton duck sandwich plus 4 layers of cotton duck for a handle, didn't even blink. My Bernina 1130 walking foot had trouble with the step. The old lady didn't. Very well priced here. Cheers, Mandy
@@andrewmandywilsontatham49 Nice one Mandy,
They are cool machines, I had to turn off my Trademe alerts for Sewing machines, my obsession was getting a bit out of hand, no doubt I'll pick it up again in six months. All the best, keep on collecting.
I remember once saying who would want a VS thats old style , then i got one , 2 ,3 ......ya i love the vibrating shuttle machines , so simple so strong and what a great stitch , i think the VS machines are way too forgotten , glad that you and i love them a restore them , future generations hopefully will get to ser where it all started ,Thanks Bob akways enjoy your content 👍👍P.S. i noticed you havent cleaned the needle bar and pressure foot on that vs3 lol slacker .....i also still need to clean mine , but i think we are the same , its not broke we mess with it , ya clean and oil butnot the spit shine we normally do .....
Ok, now I'm going to have to order a motor... 😂 I love my 128, so beautiful 😍
@Alyssa Peters, Good call, but don't buy a motor faster than 7000 RPM. The vibrating shuttle machines can't handle really fast motor speeds. A .9 amp 7000 motor with electronic foot controller is relatively inexpensive and works perfectly with these machines. I have used this motor and it's very good:

This is my foot controller of choice for these:

WOW!! Thank you for the video.
You bet!
Mr. Fowler, thanks for the close up views and explaining the mechanics of the vibrating shuttle; doesn’t seem intimidating at all with your close up views! Question and it’s off topic: the Meguirs Scratch X you have on your tool bench-is it used to polish machines? If so, do you have a video on how it’s used? What does it do to decals? I saw the same polish mentioned just last night in a comment on a 12 year old video, but it didn’t mention how to use. It might be a simple question, but as a novice I just don’t want to harm my machine in any way. Thank you for your time!
Great machines there, Bob. I have a October 1937 128-13 in the darker bentwood case with the knee lever/control. I rewired the motor and light completely, as they were both down to bare wire when I bought her (Myrtle). She sews like a dream but really needs a deeper cleaning and proper adjustments below. That's a nice Vickers, btw. Another great video, friend. 🖖🇺🇸
Thanks Rich! I love the 128, great machines.
That Singer seemed to be quite smooth. Produced a stitch just about equal to a 201-2. Nice oldie but a goodie!
I have one since yesterday! The one I got has the La Vencadora as well. Possibly from 1924. It's in perfect condition. I wish it came with the box and the knee bar but I am super happy with it. It only needed one minor and adjustment to the top tension and it sewed with the old needle it in. (I wanted to see if it would and it did. ) That's for demonstrating this model. Adding this one to my collection.
Very cool!! Thanks Bob
Glad you liked it!
I also have a 1937 128. I've replaced all the electrical parts and grafted it into a sears and roebuck sewing table with built in knee controller from about the same era. It's a great machine with a lot of power and, when adjusted and lubricated properly, rarely jams or misses stitches. In my internal mathematics, I was happy to give up reverse stitching for the reliability and ease of maintenance of a vibrating shuttle . What now is this witchcraft of a vibrating shuttle with backstitch?
I with it were the case that Singer made a vibrating shuttle machine with backtack or reverse, but they never did. They easily could have, and there was at lest one company that offered a retrofit kit for some old straight stitch machines that would give reverse, but Singer never did. It's too bad...
Hı,
All of them are very nice videos, thank you. I have a Singer 28 hand cranked and need adjuster manual i couldn't find. Do you have or can you find it? Thanks..
You can use the info in the 127/128 manual, the adjustments are the same. bobsvsmservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Singer-127-and-128-Adjuster-Manual.pdf
@@BobFowlerWorkshop Is shuttle clerance same? (0.018 inch)
@@ishakbayram6540 Yes
@@BobFowlerWorkshop thank you 🙏
I just saw a featherweight with case and all accessories in mint condition listed on Facebook marketplace 1 hour ago for $30. It was sold by the time i messaged them. Big Sad. Sold within 1 hour.
Pretty stitch.........yeah vintage.
I have a Vickers treadle that I adore! There is a lot of i formation out there on the internet. I also have 128 with la vencedora decals. Although I can’t get it to pick up the bobbin thread. I would love to pick your brain, if you have email?
You can remove those labels very easily with this stuff called UN-DU........I think that's it. I'll check.
I never understood why anyone would think it's OK to slap a sticker on someone else's property...
