    Thank you so very much. Perfect tutorial!!! Slow enough that I could understand yet no wasted time. Camera angle is perfect. I'm learning to sew with my great-grandmother's old Singer. Sorry for the cliche but they certainly don't make them like they used to. Even after 150 years it's still moves like Silk. What a treasure to have. I look forward to seeing more of you. Your instrution skills are excellent!!! Thanks again.

    It's still so funny that mine still didn't do the magically go under the spring or other areas 😂 I have to use my small screwdriver to get the thread where it is supposed to magically go, for whatever reason. Thank you, I am very grateful for this video because I use it as a reference for my shuttle bobbins to thread them. I have so many different shuttles, they're so very interesting!

    Thank you so much for your wonderful videos on this wonderful old Singer machine. I have an old 1890 Singer Treadle machine and love it. I've been able to watch your video and help a few others with what you and a few other youtube tutorials have shown me. I've learned to thread, bobbin wind, oil, buy a few more bobbins, replace an old presser foot and more. Many people have a machine and are afraid because they don't know how to use it. I say, jump in and sew! If you have any questions... just look at your wonderful videos. In today's world, with youtube you can do just about anything!
    God Bless you for all you do!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 роки тому

      Belts can be easily found on Amazon - just look for "leather Treadle Belt". They come in a standard size that you cut to fit your table and machine - and then re-staple together at the ends. Be careful when you punch the hole for the staple. It has to be exactly in the middle of the belt or your belt will split! Cleaning can be done with pure Kerosene (just don't get any on the decals) and make sure you use a sewing machine oil to oil it. Good luck! Have fun!!

    Great tutorial ... I am learning about a 127J I purchased to restore the old treadle cabinet of my mother's. When she bought a new one, Singer 301A in the early 50's, the door to door salesman took her old Singer head and left the cabinet. I am going to put the 127J head back in her cabinet and have a lot to learn about the functioning of the 127J. I also, have to restore veneer on the cabinet before I put the head in the cabinet. Anyway, many thanks for the information you share...

    that little screw at the bottom of shuttle(pointed end) will adjust the tension on the bobbin thread, tension is about right , when you hold bobbin thread and let it hang free shouldn't unravel.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 роки тому +1

      If you are talking about tension on the bobbin shuttle, there is a little screw on the leaf spring that can loosen it. However, in my experience, that usually doesnt need to be tampered with! It may be that you have a bur in the metal from a rust spot or a needle strike that you will need to smooth out. I do this with a little sliver of an Emery cloth that I can slip in under the spring - like using floss. It could also be that you are using very old thread, or that your bobbin is wound too tight. Hope this helps!

    Excellent video! I was given a 1900 Faultless by a relative. It belonged to her mother. I can tell by your video that my machine uses the torpedo shuttle and long bobbin. Are they difficult to find? The machine is on its way to a repair shop for a good cleaning, oiling. Belt replaced and any missing parts. I do have the original manual. Very delicately folded in pages. Hoping to make copies. Like the person at the Hair Spa and Wig Loft, I want to spend my "sheltering in place" winter, learning how to use the Faultless. My Grandma Hazel made beautiful full cotton aprons. I still have them to copy. Thank you so much! ~Diane

      What a nice story! You will have to name your machine "Hazel". I've named all of mine - usually after the person who owned it first, or in memory of someone who I know who used one just like it. Maybe you will get interested in quilting - I have some great tutorial videos for free that you can follow! I find all the missing parts to my antique machines online either ebay or craig's list or local yard sales. Never too expensive either. Have fun!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 місяці тому

      The year and the model all make a difference- as they changed up the shuttle and bobbin over the first few years. There are different length bobbins that have to have the exact shuttle - or it won't fit. If your shuttle is a different year than the machine, it might be too long and not fit either. Look up your serial number on ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html

  • @ktje33

    Hi
    Firstly: thanks a lot for the informative video's! Secondly: I have a question about threading my newlt acquired Singer 28k: I followed your instructions and inserted the bobbin into the shuttle but the thread does'nt run freely. Looks like it's stuck. If I pull very hard the bobbin does spin. Before 'clicking' the thread under the tensioner it does run freely. I tried to lossen up the screw and udjust the tension but this didn't seem to help. Do you know what might be the problem?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому

      Hi! It's hard for me to say without actually seeing/feeling the issue in person. It could be that there is some thread caught inside the bobbin shuttle somewhere. You could try soaking the shuttle in a cup of kerosene (that's what I use to clean my antique machines) - it will dissolve any gummy oil or grease and loosen any stray threads. Then make sure it's totally dry before re-threading it and setting it into the machine. It could also be that you may have the wrong shuttle! Those old models: VS2, 127, 128, 27 and 28 all went through some minor shuttle changes as they changed the model number. They are all basically the same machine - except for the little changes in shuttle and bobbin winding mechanism. If loosening the screw on the leaf spring didn't help, then I'm not sure what else it could be. Sorry I don't have a more positive answer! I hope you can figure it out. ;)

    It's very helpful video 🥰🥰🥰🥰....can you tell me how the sewing size can select...I mean how much big or small will be every stitch...

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  Рік тому

      Each machine is different. There is usually a big screw you can turn that will change the stitch length. It's on the front of the machine on the right side. If you loosen the screw the stitch gets short. If you tighten the screw, the stitch gets longer. Sometimes the screw is on a lever. You loosen the screw, then move the lever either up and down or side to side to change the stitch length.
      Hope this helps!

    I just bought this type of machine. I was having trouble trying to make a good stich and decided to follow the advice of another youtuber. He said that when the stich is not good enough or is skipping stiches the problem is that the foot presser, is too hight , and you need to lower it. So i followed his instruction. removed the nut at the top of the bar that holds the foot presser , topped a little bit, with a rubber hammer and lowered the foot presser. Unfortunately this made this worse. Now is not even picking up the thread from the shuttler, or making any stiches. i assumed i messed up the machines timer. Is there any way you can please make a video showing how to set up the timer? I really appreciated. I have adjusted the foot presser at different heights but nothing is working. Thanks so much.

    I just bought a Gold Smith treadle machine that has this shuttle bobbin. Are all shuttle bobbins and bobbin cases the same in these machines?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 роки тому

      There are slight differences in size and shape depending on the year of manufacture or the model or the manufacturer. I know that Singer changed its shuttle bobbin for the same machine 3 times in about 7 years! I have 4 treadle machines - 2 that are VS2 Singers, one that is a Singer 15 (it has an oscillating bobbin), and a Singer 66. Then I have 12 hand crank antiques of which 5 of them have a shuttle long bobbin. They are not interchangeable between machines! Some look alike, but are slightly different in size. Some have a different shape shuttle, like an open 'boat's, or a closed 'bullet' or a bullet with a flat side. Some of them take a bobbin that is just a 16th of an inch shorter. The variations are very slight.

    How does seeing a garment with this machine compare to a average machine today..can it go thru heavy material?

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 роки тому +1

      Good question! YES!!! It can even sew through leather with the correct needle. This machine is a real work horse. If you have stacked seams of a heavy denim or leather, you may have to hold the hand wheel and hand crank it over the stacked seam - but that's just because the belt may slip. Otherwise, it has no problems what so ever!

  • @duoneswart4989
    @duoneswart4989 2 роки тому +1

    Hello there! I just bought a 1910 version. The needle and bobbin are missing and now looking at your video, maybe even the foot piece. Does it use a specific size bobbin? The antique shop told me it is a 16K model, with the serial number F2358376. Any help would be great!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 роки тому +1

      I just looked up your serial number on ISMACS.net and see that it is really a model 28K from 1912 (the antique shop looked up a 6 digit number - yours is 7 digits). You will be able to use a modern flat sided needle on this machine. I like the Schmetz 90x14 or 80x12 sharps for most of my projects. The long bobbins come in a few different lengths and widths, so you have to make sure you have the specific one that fits your bobbin shuttle. Do your search with the correct model number "Singer 28K long bobbin" and you will probably find some on Ebay. The feet for the machine are pretty standard for Singer. You can use any "Low shank" type screw on foot for this machine. Good luck in your search!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 роки тому +2

      When the bottom stitches are loose or "pooling", it means your top tension is not tight enough (not getting enough resistance from the tension discs). Make sure you have tour top thread running between the discs properly, and that the discs are screwed in a little tighter. Keep adjusting a bit at a time till you get it right. Hope that helps!

    Hi, I know this is an old video but I'd be grateful if you could help. I have a Singer 28k that I've been restoring. I threaded the bobbin correctly but the spool isn't moving. it doesn't matter what I do I can't get the thread to pull out. I'm pretty sure It's put in correctly as per your video. Do i need to buy a replacement bobbin or do I need to oil the bobbin somehow? The entire machine was seized and not working so it wouldn't suprise me if this was the case as I've used so much oil to get the machine moving. Thanks.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому

      The big thing about restoring, is cleaning out the old oil and debris first. Never dump new oil on an old seized up machine. I use 100% kerosene to clean everything, and brushes, pipe cleaners and gross grain ribbon (runs like floss between parts) - all doused with kerosene. Kerosene will eat away and loosen up the worst compact sludge that seizes up joints! If you have the original manual that came with the machine, it will also suggest kerosene. Once it has evaporated and everything is dry and clean, I oil every joint with a good clean sewing machine grade oil. I've never found a bobbin casing that wouldnt let the spool turn. I'm thinking it could be that either your bobbin spool is the wrong size, or its filled too much, or there is rust stuck between the leaf spring and the casing body. This is also where the ribbon doused in kerosene can come in handy! Feed it in under the leaf spring and work it back and forth. Dont oil this part! The other adjustment on the bobbin casing is the little screw on the leaf spring; but that is usually my last resort, as that very rarely needs adjusting when using normal thread weights. If you are trying to use a heavy duty thread, that could be your problem. The long bobbins come in several sizes specific to each model machine back then. Yours might have ends with a wider circumference or it may be a bit too long. Hope this info helps!

      @@TheMasquerade Thank you :) the restoration tutorial I followed said to clean the machine WITH the sewing machine oil. So that's what I'd done. I managed to sort the problem with the bobbin by turning the screw on the shuttle. After putting it all together both the tensions are off, so that's another job now :(

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому

      @@IamNotANumber the screw on the shuttle will adjust your bobbin tension. The slightest turn (16th of an inch) will make a huge difference. So be careful! The top tension needs to be very clean - no oil. If the discs had rust on them or are pitted in any way, you may have a difficult time. If they are still smooth and can be cleaned and dried, it shouldn't be too difficult. Make sure you take pictures as you take apart the tension assembly! That will help when you put it all back together.😉

    • @IamNotANumber
      @IamNotANumber 3 роки тому

      @@TheMasquerade I tried to tighten the top tension but even with it tight as i could get it it didn't make any difference. I unscrewed the whole thing and the front part where you loosen and tighten it was open and bent out of shape. I also tried to tighten the screw on the shuttle and that also made no difference so I am guessing both of these parts need replacing. I'll get on eBay and see what I can get and hopefully this will sort this problem out. Thank you for your help.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому

      You could be threading the needle in the wrong direction. Some machines thread from left to right, and some machines thread from right to left - or even front to back. You need to know the model of your machine.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 роки тому

      A couple things could be happening here. Your needle may be not pushed in deep enough - or facing the wrong way. Your machine may want to be threaded from right to left instead of left to right. You could try turning the flat side of your needle to the outside (left) and see if it will be able to be screwed in that way. Then thread from the right to left. You may also have something obstructing the bobbin shuttle - or the timing might be off. I'm afraid I can't be much help with changing the timing on the machine - it has to do with coordinating the time the needle goes down with the swing of the shuttle - and that's an internal adjustment.
