I have thin hair too. Its terrible. I just made braids and i forgot how bald i look without extra hair twisted in. My hair is already halfway down my back so i have length. Just no thickness. Lots of volume though

Have rewatched this video 5 times. I used the damp styling method and OMG what beautiful (but not yet perfected) defined and shiny curls I got!! Before I was putting all products in shower. No more AND the last step of oil to undo the crunchiness …WOW!! Just for reference I am 59 years old woman from South Texas and only started embracing my curls June of 2022. Before I flat ironed my hair for years. Thanks Mel!!

The oil scrunch doesn't work for me at all. Like, at, all. My hair is superfine and thin so the oil just weighs it down, and it looks stringy.

Jacey E here, I’ve been watching on and off for a few years but recently I’ve gotten 100% back into curly hair care. You (and a few others) have inspired me to go to cosmetology school and specialize in curly hair. I already feel like I have a leg up from watching your channel! Thank you for being such a fun educator for fellow curlies!

I think some of the frustration comes from the trial and error of natural hair, whereas styling with heat tools with the same techniques is very consistent across hair textures and curl patterns. Your natural hair is yours and yours alone, and your preferred look along with your lifestyle and environment are going dictate how you style it and what products you use.

I have a loose wave pattern and painfully low porosity hair (I can dunk my head in a pool and come up with my hair being mostly still dry). Brush styling, damp styling, and hover diffusing leaves my waves so stretched that they disappear by the end of the day. Thanks for recognizing that not all methods work for all hair types!

Ah! The big damp vs wet debate. I’ve been wondering about oil after hairspray vs before. This is a helpful recap 💇🏻‍♀. It’s so hard when you’re transitioning - so many variables to consider. And you’re never sure because your hair isn’t going to be at its greatest when starting out no matter what you do or use.

This is probably by far one of my favorite videos. This is what I love about you and Amanda. You can be real and admit perhaps everything doesn't work for everyone. I am an OG and I feel you have done this from the beginning. It's not about what works for you for us to follow, but the science and techniques behind it. I enjoy watching other curly influencers but always come back to you. I learned early on that many influencers just shared what worked for them and I became frustrated not understanding why it didn't work for me. Then came Mel. Not only teaching but doing so in a way that made it easy to understand the science behind it. I've always wore my hair curly growing up, but I fell in love with it as an adult watching you. I look forward to every Texture Thursday. Even my straight haired hubby knows when you arw on and it is do not disturb. Thanks for all you do.

I straightened my hair my whole life and in 2020 I tried following your advice and nothing looked good. Gave up and went back to blow outs. But in 2022 I went through an awful break up and then shortly after my dad died and I had no desire to even leave my apartment let alone do my hair. A year ago, I just wanted to feel new and I cut my hip length hair to my shoulders and decided to just do a lazy styling with mousse and my god my curls were amazing and I came back to your videos and it’s like a world of a difference bc now my hair quality is better and I follow your advice daily, you are the curly hair guru!

I think one thing we often neglect is that even type 3 and 2 hair can have kinks, although not as tight and dense as type 4. This gives a lot of "frizz" just because the curls go in different directions, but it's not sign of a damaged cuticle or anything like that. My hair is quite coarse and kinky, although it has a 3a-b pattern. When I want a round voluminous effect, I diffuse product free (maybe with leave-in) so my hair becomes a total frizzball, and then apply a mousse or foam that is slippery and quite wet, but just patting it and lightly scrunching, without distributing on the lengths. Then I quickly diffuse to also dry the foam, and this removes the frizz from the ends, clumps and defines the outer layer of curls, while the rest remains fluffy and voluminous. A sort of "wash now/style later" method but actually I can do it all at once or style the next day. My hair is quite short now, the entire routine takes me 10 minutes from start to finish.

I am so grateful for your videos -- I grew up being a redhead with curly hair omg in a beach area - everyone had straight blonde hair - tanned bodies -- in the wrong era -- I bleached my hair and straightened it to fit end -- it took many decades to embrace my natural person -- hell people pay a lot of money for both of my natural blessings - we just did not have the info on taking care of our hair -- so thank you for being you and the beauties we are PS I oil my hair and I use a steamer on it -- it works for me

For 20 years, I straightened my hair bc I was so unhappy with curl stying since I didn't even understand my curls...and straight hair was the "prettiest" way to go in my social circles. Since I bumped into one of your videos in 2020, I was hooked on curls. You helped me embrace my curls. Yes, I get the itch to go back to straight every now and then, but I just watch or rewatch one of your videos and the itch goes away.
The damage from 20 years of straightening is still somewhat evident on me, but each one of your techniques helps me out a lot.
You are the best and this video helped me to understand why the ribbon and hovering technique was not working on me ❤

Over the years your channel is my go to and I recommend your channel to everyone I meet that has questions about curly hair... hair in general. You have brought me through so much lol out of the days of cgm and cold showers, and styling my hair soaking wet upside down causing back pain. My hair and my back thank you! I'm so happy curries and wavies are talking about frizz being okay. I know for so long it seemed frizz was the enemy along with sulfates and silicones. I've been learning lately I need a little bit of frizz. I was using your ribbon curl technique and it took me too long to realize it wasn't working. It finally hit me that brush styling was causing more mechanical damage and pulling out my hair. I recently made some changes and that includes being okay with frizz. Thanks to you I'm not afraid of trying different hair styles, and knowing how to keep my hair healthy and knowing how to use products and tools.

Thank you for addressing fine hair styling on damp vs. wet hair. I've been noticing that soaking wet styling doesn't seem to agree with my fine hair and my loose waves just get so tired looking. Plus I lose my product cast to the solution in the water on my hair and then microplopping. My refresh days always look much better than my wash days, no matter what. I need to microplop before applying my stylers, I think.

It works so well to give me volume in my look while still letting my length grow. My brother likes the technique cuz it allows me to cut the hair around the nape of his neck since you cut that separately for length. I adapted that and cut his hair from the ears up the way you do in the video! Literally saving my hair and my brothers too! Thanks for all you do for the curly hair community. Ever since I found you a few months ago and after watching and learning from you, my hair has been looking BADASS! 58 years old and I’m finally learning how to work with this hair! I’m even teaching my stylist about how to style curls because she’s got a few curly girl clients, isn’t a curly girl herself, and admittedly has no idea how to style curls. Or even cut them, really. (She got one Deva Curl dry cut class when Deva Curl launched. That’s it.) Which leads me to a possible video idea for you: How does one get a stylist to cut a curly girl’s hair in that style you rock in all your videos, no matter what kind of cut you have? Where the hair is “wider” on the sides? (It’s narrow on the top, poofs out more on the sides, and then gets more narrow at the bottom.) As a stylist yourself, are you open to demonstrating your curly cut method in a video so we can have our stylists learn to do the same cut? Mind you, I’d jump my ass on a plane in a heartbeat if I could get an appointment with you! But I know you’re not taking new clients, and a flight from Florida would be a lot of cheese. (You’d be 100% worth it and there’s nothing I’d love more.) The video suggestion I’m giving is NOT to show how to cut the adorable bob you are currently rocking. The video I’m suggesting would show how to cut curly hair…should it be a dry cut or should it be a wet cut? Do you just go in there and hack away with no rhyme or reason as the Deva Curl method teaches, or should a stylist truly go in there with a lot more “order” than the Deva Curl method? (Where the stylist just hacks off random dry pieces of hair in such a willy-nilly fashion.) The video could give an idea how many layers are necessary to highlight our curls and not have a cut where the curls are flat and weighed down. If you’re not up for the idea, absolutely zero worries. It’s just a question that I thought I’d pose because my excellent stylist needs your help! Before I sign off, you are so flippin’ adorable! I just love you! 😁 - Tamara L.

I just want to say THANK YOU, thanks to you my hair looks better and better. I wore my hair straight for so long because I just didn’t know what to do with my curls. I finally decided to embrace my curls a few years back and I just hate that it took me so long to find your channel. I have been watching you for about a year and have caught up on every single video. Again THANK YOU! ❤❤❤❤ if only my bangs would cooperate then I’d be set!

Congrats on 6 years! When people comment on how good my hair looks I say this is what I learned during the COVID lock down. I literally needed a pandemic to learn how to take care of my hair! Now, thanks to you, my hair looks great and I don't trust it to anyone else. Not even for hair cuts! I just pull up one of your videos and snip away. You're the best! and Amanda too!! I loved her transition especially since I have course hair too. Not sure what to comment for the give away but we'll go with Raquel G. :)

Thank you so much for helping get back to my curls! For years I would straighten my hair! I had long hair and just recently cut it short and decided to embrace my curls!! And it’s all due to you! I saw an instagram post and absolutely fell in love with curls again. Your videos and posts have helped me with my routine. I still am learning and trying to get it right but I’m loving the journey! I even got my sister-in-law into the curl love😂. She is starting her curl journey and hopefully will love them as much as I do!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Mel for helping me with my curl journey and reminding me every day to love my curls!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Hi Mell, I’ve tried so many different products by following your channel because I have very porous hair, very fine and not too much of it. It’s gets very frizzy, very easily. I was using Not your mothers hair gel and had even tried some other brands and it wouldn’t give me the hold. So I just blamed it on my hair. Then on here you mentioned why Curlsmith souffle would work better for someone with very porous hair. And OMG! The hold is such a huge difference! I will only use this from now on for my gel choice. I also live in a very humid area (Chicago) and we’ve even had some crazy warm days and high humidity due to lots of rain. And it has been a game changer. Thank you for your advice. I love your channel!! A big fan!

Been watching you on and off for the past couple of years, have been SUPER grateful for your tips.
My biggest issue is that I can damp or wet style, get some definition when it’s done under the dryer… But then 30 mins to an hour later (scrunch or no scrunch) my hair is flat 😢 might be my hard water, might be not the right product combos (though I feel I’ve tried everything), might be my still-not-correct-haircut, or even some combination thereof. I’m just ready to not cry when I’m done styling my hair.

I appreciate this video so much!!! I had gotten away from watching you not because your styling techniques didn't work, but because the products you recommend really don't do much for my hair. I live on the Gulf Coast in an incredibly hot and humid climate (our city was quite literally named the most humid city in the US last year 🥵), and I think the thing that this video touches on that many of the others don't, especially the older videos, is context. There is another influencer on UA-cam that I watch a lot of who is really specific about what products she recommends for certain climates and density/hair texture.. and having that context makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world whenever you're trying to learn. One thing you specifically mentioned in this video that was also terribly counterproductive for me was using the oil after styling. Y'all just raved about it, so when it made my hair fall apart and start frizzing 100% of the times I tried it, it made me feel like I must be doing something wrong. I absolutely cannot use oils in my hair. Unfortunately, I just had to learn that the products you recommend are to be taken with a grain of salt UNLESS a more thorough explanation is given about different ingredients and who'll they'll work best for. Thank you for striving to be the best communicator that you can be, for us!

Christine E. here. I want to congratulate you on 6 years, of hair magic!! 🎉 Before using your hair styling methods. I had pretty much bad hair days. Always wanting those healthy shiny curls in movies and tv shows, but my hair was flat with semi waves mixed in. Then after styling my hair your way I realized after the first few months. I actually had 2c/3a curls and with little effort I can get them without spending loads of money. Thanks for the journey!💇‍♀🦄

I tried a new technique bc of this video. I had more length today. That's awesome. I didn’t know about blow drying being better than air drying. I haven't seen those videos. I have a ton of thin strands very curly almost coiling dry hair. You are the reason that I have such beautiful curls.

Would love tips/techniques on cutting medium length layered curly hair & how to talk with stylist to achieve best results. For ex. some stylists use point cut & other slide the scissor down select pieces for layers. How can a person figure out which technique is best for their hair? Since there's very very little info. on this topic I think many wavy/curly hair people would find this so helpful. Without a good haircut ,products aren't able to reach their potential. With appreciation for all you do !

I have tried brushing, raking, shingling on wet, damp, and microfiber dried hair - great definition, low volume. What works best for my hair is to shake my head after applying my stylers to semi wet hair and then diffusing. I never get volume with air drying!! You taught me to air dry and you were right!!😊

Mell- I learned a lot! First because of you I started in 2024 diffusing my hair right after I apply my products. I am a lot older than you and I have been air drying my hair forever & if going out would diffuse for only 6-7 minutes at the end. I love the volume I get from diffusing from the start. I learned today that scrunching with the diffuser shortens my already shorter hair. That makes sense! LOL So I think I will try to just hover. I also learned about the oil. I need only a tiny bit. Secret-my entire life I was picking out the cast and literally hair would be everywhere. Now that I’m older and my hair is much thinner and extremely fragile, I just shake it out and lightly scrunch. In my 20’s and 30’s I would have had such magnificent curls but I picked it out. Why? I didn’t know any better. Curly hair is a journey & each person has to try tips & tricks until they find what works. It’s insane how great both sides of your head look. My hair is not like yours. It’s very fine. I am afraid to cut it too short but would love to know if you cut your hair in a way that gives it such a beautiful shape. Do you need thick hair like yours to pull off the shape of your gorgeous haircut? Ty Mell. I have your towel too! You have been a godsend to me on my curl journey. I’m single again after 31 years 😮 So I am trying to update my look & find my confidence again 😊

Jocelyn K. here!!! I recently have been experiencing extremely dry curls that were knotting easily. After watching a couple of your previous videos (again) I decided to add the Aveda leave-in spray and finally got the Verb foam gel and omg!!! My hair is so much better this wash week!!! My curl pattern and texture is very similar to that of another UA-camr, India Batson, but the products that work for her just didn’t do it for me. I have tried almost everything you have suggested and am debating on the bounce curl brush even though you mentioned it might not be right for my hair type and that they are working on one for different textures like mine in the future. Congratulations on 6 years. I believe I’ve been here for at least four of them!!!!

Thanks, Mel. I'd just been wondering why my fine low density hair has been overly silky lately (and so curl dropping out). I had recently been brush styling instead of combing product through and finger styling. I'll drop the brush styling now. The small section tip is one I'm going to try for better volume, too. Thanks again, and congratulations on your 6 years on UA-cam. XX Stephanie B.

And stopped 3 years ago. Now dealing with hair damage

For my heat damage are finger curling bigger chunks if hair works better because smaller don’t curl properly

Want you to know i love your vern baby and it’s probably the best product i tried so far in my curly journey ❤
