This is by far my favorite, and in my opinion, best series on UA-cam for deck building. You really put a solid list together even when there is a budget. Love these ❤️
My favorite secret combo for Ur Dragon that no one at the table usually remembers is Old Gnawbone making an obscene amount of treasures, at least 20, and Hellkite Tyrant triggering a win in my upkeep for controlling 20 or more artifacts.
I feel like that with my Edgar markov deck which I think ur dragon and Edgar were a mistake they are both too powerful for the tribes they are in and are basically auto commanders if you want to have a vampire or dragon deck
@@Fighting_irish493 I can't speak too much for Vampires, but there are actually a few very powerful dragon commanders. I'd argue that Scion of the Ur-Dragon is more powerful if you're playing in a combo meta (there's some crazy stuff you can do with it), and Tiamat/Klauth are both not too far behind the curve if you just want to jam dragons. :) But yeah, they fucked up by making these for sure.
@@andrewharrison5801 The problem with dragon commanders currently, is that Ur-Dragon is $100, and all strong options on a budget aren’t exactly fun to helm unless you like to play the same deck every game.
@@lightshadow3683 What kind of design would you like to see on a dragon tribal card? Their current cookie cutter 'play tribe, get card draw' tribal template isn't particularly inspiring, but I guess that would make for more open ended decks?
@@andrewharrison5801 Maybe something like Rivaz of the Claw or Nogi, but more color inclusive? With the exception of The Ur-Dragon, which isn't exactly a widely-accessible card, there is no 5-color option that isn't just "search for a dragon." They are certainly powerful options, but tutor commanders don't exactly make fun decks, at least for most players.
Never pulled off the Wrathful Red Dragon + Blasphemous Act combo, BUT, very similar, I HAVE pulled off something very similar with Howlpack Avenger and B.A for win MANY times.
Every time I watch these videos, I want to make the deck. Thanks for the thoughtful and thorough explanations. I vote for a group hug upping the average next.
I pulled off the Blasphemous Act combo last week with my Firkraag Deck. I had an additional copy of Wrathful Red Dragon on the board due to Reflections of Littjara. Next turn I kicked Rite of Replication and played Blasphemous Act for one mana. More than 600 damage in a five player pod. By the way: I instantly conceded before the spell's resolution and let the other players battle it out while I sat there smiling. Felt great!
I have a Lathliss deck and blasted my friends with a Wrathful Red Dragon and Blasphemous Act while Fiery Emancipation was on my field XD P.S. I love you guys and your Channel! You are all so wholesome and a joy to listen to :3
Started playing in August after years of my coworkers asking me. Thanks for all the help as my love of dragons is what got me hooked. 👊 ... oh yeah an lurking predators with Mirrym on the board is so much fun although I know a board wipe will be headed my way soon.
The lands are the most expensive part of my Ur Dragon deck, a good budget option I found to color fixing is to use the ramp spells that go and get a forest. And then run as many dual lands that say forest/ whatever, that way its easy to A) Have green mana to cast said spells and B) Find whatever color your missing. World tree is amazing at helping fixing colors.
One way my deck has evolved over the years is that it went from a big ramp big dragons deck into a midrange deck focusing mostly on 4-6 cost dragons. There are just so many good ones at that cost and the eminence ability makes it truly shine
Great upping! You're right there is no such thing as auto-include in Ur-Dragon, i can relate, but i highly suggest depending on your budget to add an unpopular card, ''Selvala's Stampede'', it perfectly synergizes with Ur-Dragon and the value you get is amazing. And if you're feeling spicy, replace the Bower Passage for a ''Thundermaw Hellkite'', extra draw, damage, and remove small floppers is great too.
Came for the decklist stayed for the bad puns!😂 If you’re taking requests, I’d love to see Mimeoplasm esp after seeing it in action in Elder Dragon Hijinx!😁
I’m so impressed you brought the price down 800 plus dollars!!! Amazing work, this is one of my favorite commanders and you’ve definitely done it Justice. Thank you for the excellent video and love your work!
I'm new to magic. I've played 2 full games so far. I've bought 2 precon decks. I'm building a dragon deck. This video has been a huge help! I've watched this video 5x already! I made the mistake of buying a "custom built" ur dragon deck from an online seller. They had a bunch of chaffs in the set. Literally everything except for ur dragon and lathliss is worth less $1. I've already spent 200 bucks upgrading the set. Learn from my mistakes. But can't wait to try ur dragon out. Looks like a heavy hitter!
i'd actually cut Sarkhan's Triumph aswell, makes room for one more spicy Dragon and you can still tutor them up with Tiamat. With all the card draw we don't need a tutor for 3CMC in my opinion that is. Also, the 2 cost reducers (on Creatures) i've cut from my deck aswell.
Was real down when my terror of the peaks was exiled, but then threw down lozhan, then scion of draco, then earthquake dragon and won the game on the spot.
I love this video so far. Wow. I just bought ur dragon, just got into magic about a year ago. My friends / family wanted me to jump into the five color theme immediately. I chose not to, decided to make an atarka world render deck, that eventually turned into ganax/acolyte gruul. It's very fun, but I have now decided to jump into ur dragon after about a year of playing. I think I'm ready
Something to add thats a multi-tool on a stick for the budget option is Shaman of the Great Hunt. Its a 3R mana 4/2 with haste, but its the abilites that give it versatility. Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, put a 1/1 counter on it. It helps equalize heartless summoning. Its other ability is 2 G/U G/U, draw a card for each creature with power 4 or greater. Its last versatility use is that it can flush out a removal spell because it looks too good to be left on the field, so it can clear a path for a dragon you really wanna play. I also play, Gore Claw, terror of qal sisma because it reduces creature spells of 4 or greater by two.
Thanks Joey. Kinda wish to make my own The Ur-Dragon deck now (Tied with Elves for my favorite creature type). I would love to see you take on a Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter build.
Wrathful Red and Blasphemous Act also exists on the dinosaur end of Magic! Wrathful Raptors is the same exact creature as Red without flying. I have killed three players off of somebody else's BA because of the number of dinosaurs on the field. I'm not sure if it would work as well with dragons though, because dragons don't often go wide, and you want more dragons for that interaction to outright win the game.
Have you considered putting in majestic genesis in the budget or even the normal list ? It’s a dollar card that with ur dragon having a 9cmc just outright wins games sometimes
This made me remember that I still have the sealed Ur-Dragon deck in my closet. Already have the Secret Lair Ur-Dragon, and now thinking I can sell the sealed deck, buy the few singles from it that I don't have other copies of, then still have a few hundred left over.
Something that I've done, that may excite you really, is instead of putting in the Fires of Yavimaya try out a Molten Reflection instead. Yes it's a double red pip and costs 1 more but helps out spectacularly. Tiny non-bo with the legendaries but it doubles up any ETB effects as two dragons will be hitting the field for every 1 you play. Nonlegendary dragons give you the chance to be aggressive and avoid the repercussions of leaving yourself open as well. Finally top it off with a Bloodwing the Risen for an infinite ETB and LTB loop for a sweet reanimation of all your dragons, plus damage loops if you have Scourge of Valkas or Dragon Tempest out for a delightful and surprising aristocrat win with a dragon deck.
i run wulfgar as a way of doubling the ur dragon's trigger. it also synergizes with the frf dragons too. i havent gotten around to getting isshin, but that's going in eventually
Hi, I am always very enthusiastic about your upping the average videos and often use them to push my decks. That's why I would be very happy to see Chainer, Nightmare Adept in such a video? :-)
Absolutely love the decklist! I'll definitely be gradually upgrading my super budget dragon deck with some of these lists! In your opinion, on the budget version of your deck, who would you change out for Morophon, Old Gnawbone, Goldspan and Sarkhan Soul Aflame? I have these set to the side for the beginnings to upgrade my deck, but cutting cards feels horrible lol
I've had my Ur-Dragon deck for the last 4 years and my "reject" pile has grown larger than the deck itself. Every single card in this pile was included in the deck at one point. I absolutely agree with this deck wishes it could play a 200 card deck. Choosing between an A+ card and an A++ card just hurts a little on the inside. First Ur-Dragon problems 😂
There’s a dragon that does the same thing as AA for a bit more mana so you might as well run that. Although it isn’t infinite with ventmaw. It does make it 1 mana with ventmaw
From my experience another great card to utilize in this deck is Greater Good - it can turn every instance of removal/boardwipe into more card advantage! Also I'm quite lukewarm towards Ojutai, Soul of Winter and Vaevictis Asmadi because they are too costly and Vaevictis can be too risky sometimes - I personally use lower CMC/MV Dragons like Nicol Bolas, the Ravager and Atsushi.
Are there any decks you have done that you have not made a video of? I personally built the Anje/madness deck not long ago, and wanted to build a vampire blood token deck for myself. I wanted to use either Olivia, crimson bride, or Strefan, Maurer progenitor. I have tried making my own decks, but mainly trust your judgement on decks! I'd appreciate if we could get another rakdos vampire deck!
I've never seen the appeal of Crucible of Fire personally, it feels redundant because Dragons tend to be beefy all on their own. Also I thought I was being clever having Heartless Summoning in my deck...guess the secret's out lol.
Everyone has their favorite dragon in magic and i actually like scion of the ur dragon mostly for that sweet dragon tool box but like who doesn't love dragons they are just cool
my 5 color dragon deck started out with scion back in like 2011, then with tarkir block and then ur dragon and now all the other support its gotten impossible to really edit it.... Im honestly surprised at the lack of Jodah, Archmage Eternal and/or Fist of Suns as they make all your dragons free with Morophon.
im surprised you have commander's sphere in this deck with how tuned it is imo swap it for one of the new dragon orbs that gives haste or hexproof or just swap it for much better ramp in green like a wild growth, imo wild growth should be in any deck with green its one of the very best ramp cards ever made
I think instead of Zitora for the fling damage you should consider sarkahn the mad. It allows you to knock somebody out of the game without needing to attack
Just seeing this now after playing magic for only about 6 months Wrathful read with miirym and caver of souls on the field ensures a mini nuke of a win If Blas act is countered then hit a star of extinction or tutor for piru for either a scorched earth draw killing yourself or a life link win
DO NOT OVERLOOK swashbuckling Extradinaire. He comes down for two. Gives you a treasure that you can use to get out another dragon or give another dragon double strike. He is a modal spell without explicate modes. Edit: also a MASSIVELY underrated card is Winged Portent. Draw a card for each flying creature. YES!!!
Unfortunately I don't have the Ur Dragon, I have Tiamat for the commander. Question, when Scion of the Ur Dragon copies another dragon, does it take the power and toughness? Also could you make a Tiamat variant?
I think Tiamat and the Ur- Dragon are quite different decks. The avatar's eminence suggests full tribal, punishing you for every non- dragon card in your deck. The goddesses tutor effect only needs a few target dragons to grab. In my Tiamat deck I only run twelve dragons in the 99, enough for two Tiamat triggers. The rest of the deck is filled with multicolor and legendary subthemes, ramp and removal. I try to empty my hand fast, so when I cast my commander I don't have to discard. I usually grab Piru first, play and sac her to swing the game. She's the deck's secret commander. I can reanimate her with Bladewing or Teneb. The downside is that the play pattern of a Tiamat deck can get quite repetitive by tutoring up the same dragons every game. You can even tutor for an instant win combo. Of course you can also build a classic dragon tribal deck around Tiamat if you want to. I just think that's not what she does best.
Fiery Crucible is a bad card id cut anytime even in budget, the better enchantment at 4cmc is Sarkhans Unsealing. Also Utvara Hellkite looks great on paper but i was always disappointed by it. But yea, there is no right or wrong, as long as you enjoy your cards.
Love this video❤️ The Ur Dragon is one of my favourite cards and I'm glad I picked it up the deck for £90 like 3-4 years ago and I've been adjusting it ever since 🤟😎🤟
This deck is my child lol I have a signed Justine Jones secret lair card and it's all foiled. I run Sarkhan... Because his +1 provides card advantage BUT....This has got me thinking about cutting him now lol
Cruicible of Fire is a trap-card. Especially in Ur-Dragon, there are so many 5-mana dragons that I will put in the deck before I put in a 4 mana enchantment that is not a dragon itself. You want to pump? Dromoka, the Eternal. Every dragon has "bolster 2". Kholagan, every Attacking Dragon gives every attacking creature +1/+0. Thrakkus the Butcher. When he attacks, all Dragons double their power. In any given situation, would you rather have 2 dragons and a crucible of fire or 3 dragons and one of them says "your dragons get pumped"? Dragons trigger other dragons. Crucible doesn't trigger sh1t. People need to stop putting non-dragon cards into their Ur-Dragon decks. If your Ur-Dragon deck doesn't have 45+ dragons in it, you're doing it wrong. If you consider Ur-Dragon's eminence ability, there's even 1-drop dragons now that produce mana with Scaled Nurturer. Consider, that even a late game top deck Scaled Nurturer will trigger everything that cares about dragons. It can bolster 2, it can give an extra -1/-1 with silumgar, it can trigger Scourge of Valkas. Any effect, if it's on a dragon, take that dragon instead. You get it for 1 mana cheaper and it's another card that triggers alll your other dragon triggers. Get out of here with your Crucible of Fire. 🐲
I think you missed some good cards here which are obvious includes, even in higher power decks. Domri, Anarch of Bolas is literally one of most versatile cards. The +1 attack makes Ur-Dragon into a 2 turn clock by himself, or a one-hit-kill if you have Double Strike/Dmg doublers. The added mana ramp is not the best (3 for 1), but it makes all creatures uncounterable, even if you cast them later in a turn (its not tied to the mana). Last but not least, removal. Its strong and a nice budget card as well. Triumph of the Hordes is one of the best cards to close out a game. In removal heavy metas, you sometimes have 2 dragons on the field, but thats not enough to get a kill. With this? Its very much possible. I had more games than i can count where this came in clutch, even with just 2 dragons out. Phyrexian Reclamation is one of the cards, that dont do big splashy things. But again, if your meta is removal heavy, you cant rely on Patriarchs Bidding (because your graveyard has to be filled and it profits your opponents as well). Reclamation however is a card perfectly suited for a grindy environment, you can get the good dragons back every turn and it makes boardwipes or spot removal really bad, unless they exile it. Last but not least: Culling Ritual - killing sooooo many low drops and mana rocks and artifact token (except treasures) while ramping into larger dragons. I had many games where this on turn 4/5 led into 10+ mana. For reference - this is my Ur-Dragon deck: deckstats.net/decks/4956/1893489-the-ur-dragon-commander Also here is my deck using only Commons and Uncommons: deckstats.net/decks/4956/2134479-the-ur-dragon-commander-only-u (Thanks commander legends 2)
I also have to point out that if you're making any dragon deck most likely your main color is going to be red so if you have any lands that tap for a red and another color they will take more priority over shock lands dual lands whatever the heck special lands that you think you might be good or actually worse because they don't produce a red
Can I ask why sarkhan the masterless didn’t get an honorable mention at the least. He’s less than a dollar and works wonders against go wide decks with just a couple of bodies in play
There are only 3 auto-includes in this I would say; they all make dragons cost less. One is Urza, and the other 2 are creatures I believe. There is actually a fourth that is also Urza, but is too expensive now to include, but would be if it were cheaper.
Let's be honest here, scion of the ur-dragon is the dragon commander king! And it deserves a upping the average,so more people get to know it! All hail the true king! 👑
Bleh, there are so many cuttable cards here honestly. This "average deck" is just really underdeveloped. Prime example for me is Cruicible of Fire (+3/+3 to all dragons). It's just a win more card. If you draw/play this after a board wipe it does nothing. You'll rarely have as many dragons in play as that goblin, elf, squirrel-whatever deck that go for mass tokens. To actually be remotely worthwhile, you need to have three dragons out, so you get +9 extra power on the board for your 4 mana. But when you do have those 3 beefy dragons out... how aren't you winning yet? There are enough actual dragons that will buff up your dragons while being an actual dragon themselves that I'd always play over this card. Dragons are almost like slivers at this point. They buff each other so hard that any a non-dragon card better do something really special, or it should just be cut for another dragon, which gets a manacost reduction from Ur-Dragon. Easy replacement here is [Thrakkus the Butcher]. It gives all your dragons doublestrike on attack, and in Ur-Dragon costs the same 4 mana to play. A 3/4 Double Striker for 4 mana that gives all your other dragons Double Strike on attack? Yeah it's not a difficult decision. That is assuming, that you're not already playing "Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury" already because that one is another dragon that pumps other dragons. Cruicible of Fire MIGHT be cool in a "tiny dragons" deck. Battle for Baldur's gate brought so many smaller dragons, that don't fly, that it could actually make sense to try in a Dragon Swarm deck. But even then, those utility-dragons really should go into way more big/stupid/splashy Ur-Dragon deck as well. - Korlessa Scale Singer lets you look at the top card of your library and cast any dragon from it. - Renari, Merchant of Marvels is 3 mana for a 2/4 dragon that gives all your dragons (and artifacts, but unimportant in Ur-Dragon) flash. - Nimbleclaw Adept lets you untap TWO permanents (this includes lands) so, again, because of Ur-Dragon it's a card that costs 3 mana to get a 2/3 dragon that can "tap" for 2 mana on your next turn. I'd rather draw this than Commander's Sphere on any turn, given that my manabase is actually functioning. With cards like Dragon Tempest, and Patriarch's Bidding returning all dragons to the battlefield, having actual dragons in the deck suddenly is much more deadly. The more dragons you have in the deck, big or small, the more powerfull each other dragon enabler becomes. Like seriously. Play more actual dragons. At that point it MIGHT actually become worthwhile again to play cruicible of fire...

I don’t recall if Anna Margaret played her Ur Dragon deck on edhrecast. It’s such a problem to play against 😂
I’ve absolutely ran Wrathful Blasphemous Act as a wincon in my Miirym deck
We need a redux of Teysa Karlov lol
Would this work if I used Tiamat as my commander or should I change some of the 99 out?
It definitely would, however, keep in mind that your mana curve slightly changes due to Dragons costing 1 more again.
im surprised you have commander's sphere in this deck with how tuned it is imo swap it for one of the new dragon orbs that gives haste or hexproof or just swap it for much better ramp in green like a wild growth, imo wild growth should be in any deck with green its one of the very best ramp cards ever made
Cool decktech! Do you accept suggestions for decktechs?
3:51 why not "The UR-PDATE? 😁
I think instead of Zitora for the fling damage you should consider sarkahn the mad. It allows you to knock somebody out of the game without needing to attack
Watching this in late 2023 and chromatic lantern is budget now!
Few weeks aggro I killed two people with wrathful dragon then Erie ultimate to bring my board back to deal with the last opponent it was glorious 🙌
I have really been enjoying this series. Is the Edgar Markov upping the average still good? I just picked him up and want to try him out.
Edgar got a redux about 8 months ago! :) ua-cam.com/video/CmNx1SpMqBU/v-deo.html
Also for a dragon deck my plainswalker is sarkhan the mad he just slays
Morophon devoid eldrazi upping the average, please?
Majestic genesis is sooo strong in ur-dragon. Looking 9 cards deep and dumping permanents into play is so strong
So glad this is getting reprinted, it’s like half price now
They cast a blasphemous w the wrathful red dragon on one of the latest games on smooth brain edh
Just seeing this now after playing magic for only about 6 months
Wrathful read with miirym and caver of souls on the field ensures a mini nuke of a win
If Blas act is countered then hit a star of extinction or tutor for piru for either a scorched earth draw killing yourself or a life link win
YES!!!
Gishath could seriously use a redux. Power creep has not been kind to her.
Unfortunately I don't have the Ur Dragon, I have Tiamat for the commander. Question, when Scion of the Ur Dragon copies another dragon, does it take the power and toughness? Also could you make a Tiamat variant?
Yes it does copy the power and toughness
@@kingfuzzy2 Thank you. 😁
Ofc 💟
@@alexandergartner8877 thank you for the help. Luckily I do have Piru, Bladewing, and Teneb. 😊
Where does this deck sit power level wise?
I absolutely got a win with blast at and wrathful red dragon. Surrounded by ghostly prisons they thought they were safe lol
My ur dragon deck is dragon/changeling which makes it even more malleable
Can you do a video on Tiamat deck
Instructions unclear
*makes 200 card Ur-Dragon deck*
Fiery Crucible is a bad card id cut anytime even in budget, the better enchantment at 4cmc is Sarkhans Unsealing. Also Utvara Hellkite looks great on paper but i was always disappointed by it. But yea, there is no right or wrong, as long as you enjoy your cards.
Love this video❤️ The Ur Dragon is one of my favourite cards and I'm glad I picked it up the deck for £90 like 3-4 years ago and I've been adjusting it ever since 🤟😎🤟
you forgot about Moat! 😅
Indeed it's a house in my 5 colour dragon deck
This deck is my child lol I have a signed Justine Jones secret lair card and it's all foiled. I run Sarkhan... Because his +1 provides card advantage BUT....This has got me thinking about cutting him now lol
Yay, dragons!
Hmmm... maybe I should play Patriarchs Bidding...
Wrathful red dragon kept a blasphemous act from being cast in one of my games because it would have killed the caster
I hate cutting cards for this commander
Tainted Strike :)
Niv Mizzet redux next!!!!
Pleaaaaaaase!!!
But also Roon
Would cut the creatures that are not dragons
For reference - this is my Ur-Dragon deck: deckstats.net/decks/4956/1893489-the-ur-dragon-commander
Also here is my deck using only Commons and Uncommons: deckstats.net/decks/4956/2134479-the-ur-dragon-commander-only-u (Thanks commander legends 2)
Thanks for the great Decklist! Love to see new cards and get inspo for my Ur-Dragon Deck :)
Ur dragon is like $95 so budget is a little bit rough
I also have to point out that if you're making any dragon deck most likely your main color is going to be red so if you have any lands that tap for a red and another color they will take more priority over shock lands dual lands whatever the heck special lands that you think you might be good or actually worse because they don't produce a red
Is there a updated version of this?
Stop suggesting Heartless Summoning I want it to remain budget forever!
1000$ deck. I just got into magic again and just got the start of my Lithlass deck for 70$
Can I ask why sarkhan the masterless didn’t get an honorable mention at the least. He’s less than a dollar and works wonders against go wide decks with just a couple of bodies in play
Swords to Plowshares is still an auto-include. Any deck I have that even touches white starts with the commander and StP.
There are only 3 auto-includes in this I would say; they all make dragons cost less. One is Urza, and the other 2 are creatures I believe. There is actually a fourth that is also Urza, but is too expensive now to include, but would be if it were cheaper.
Dragons ( :
The average price was in 1k range. That seems low to me.
Let's be honest here, scion of the ur-dragon is the dragon commander king! And it deserves a upping the average,so more people get to know it! All hail the true king! 👑
was
@ Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, has nothing on the scion, not the speed, versatility o power
🤡
@@PilzLanguste 😘
Agree. Scion is the dragon golden boy.
Bower passage makes them keep creatures....
player removal>creature removal
Dragons fly
