It's not that she is adding character, they are expressing themselves in that way through their signing, facial expressions and body language and she is conveying that. It's just the same as you or I speaking but without the sound :)

I was hanging out in a library with a Deaf friend, Barbara, and we were chatting in ASL and some girl came over and interrupted us to ask if she could ask Barbara a few questions and would I please interpret for her. She literally asked her if she could read Braille. I was like, WHAT???? So I told her to go away and not bother us.

@@humzy8314 Imagine going somewhere in public with high quality noise canceling headphones on, you are completely oblivious to the outside sounds around you.
Ways you could tell someone was yelling behind your back would be, visual cues as everyone looks at the yelling person, or you could just simply turn around. Also you should be able to feel the vibrations in someone's voice, if they're yelling behind you.

@@PaintedSkyArts that's what I always thought since they've never heard the words before or what their voice sounds like they'd have trouble with pronunciation, articulating themselves in a proper manner and unaware if their loud or not/how to change your voice tone.

i have 2 deaf step brothers, 1 of em is completely deaf, and the other is partially deaf (i think so)
the one who is partially deaf can still hear us if we speak loud enough, and he tried to mimick the words, now he can at least differentiate between words / names.. even though still not as clear as that guy with glasses.. so we can understand what he is speaking even more..

It probably has something to do with reading lips. Each accent pronounces words differently, so logically that means different mouth movements, so to speak. We may not notice the difference, but to someone who is deaf and is reading lips, it makes sense that they would copy others mouth movements, and therefore, their accent as well.

I’m completely deaf in my right ear, and I swear the first thing 60% of people do when I tell them is go next to me and yell in my deaf ear. Then they’re like: Did you hear that? And I’m like: yeah. Them: so you’re not really deaf? Me: I heard you with my other ear. You did yell so I’m pretty sure everyone in the vicinity heard. A lot of people don’t understand why i have to sit on the left side of them so I can hear. The other 40% are chill and don’t mock me for asking them to repeat themselves. I was born that way and grew up thinking that was how everyone was, I’ve had teachers berate me for “not paying attention” because I couldn’t hear them

@@janhaviharwani5274 my son and I are plenty happy. The brain is a amazing thing really. I grew up hearing, so even though now I dont hear anymore, I still do in my mind. My brain makes all the sound I need. So when I read someone's lips, I HEAR them in my mind too. Deaf is no disability, I even listen to music too. I feel the beats and my brain makes the noise. (Though works better if I heard the song before, know what it sounds like)

oofoofyea oof yes some can if they get speech therapy. However it’s totally their choice and it’s probably most common for deaf people that speak to have hearing aids.

@@PrettyRound Yes there are differences. Different countires have different languages and between them there are accents like signs which are signed different in different regions.
Just think about it.. like really think about it. Different languages, different words, different alphabets. Does it still make sense if it would?

@@TokyoDogz The german sign language is for example different from the english one. Also there are some signs that are different in some parts of Germany. But somebody who is fluent in sign language is capable to communicate with somebody from another country which has a different sign language. The differences aren't so big as in spoken languages but there are still a lot.

I'm deaf and I'm dating a hearing guy now. We have been dating for over 2 years. Our 3rd anniversary is in October. I'm profoundly deaf and hearing aids and other technology doesn't help me hear. I can hear 0%. We met 4 years ago and he started to learn sign language so he could talk to me (that also means I wouldn't have to read his lips). I hated him though. But about 2 years later we started dating. He told his friends he liked me and they even learned sign language.

This isn't so much a question but whenever I'm talking to my (hearing) sister, and I don't catch what she said, I'll ask her to repeat it and sometimes I'll have to ask multiple times. She gets annoyed on the second repeat and she'll just go "Nothing" in this exasperated voice like I offended her. Ps, it wasn't quite that I didn't hear her, it was just that I didn't understand the words. Like, if a person were talking to you in a language you don't know, it wouldn't matter if you heard them, you still didn't understand what they said.
The “nothing” reply is something we Deaf get quite often. People are just too lazy to repeat themselves. 🥺

As far as the driving question goes, I actually heard somewhere that deaf people have better and safer driving records because they aren't distracted by things like the radio, their cell phone, etc.

Dance Moms Edits I mean think of it this way, people that have the radio blasting in their car often don’t hear the sirens but still know to pull over because of the lights.
I remember a deaf guy was killed by the police because he did not stopped when they asked him....
Maybe this sounds a bit hard to some of you but I just think it's stupid that deaf people are allowed to drive. Sound plays such an important role in driving. Imagine someone shouting stop because you are driving over someone's foot, or when a police car is giving you instructions. There are so many things that rely on sound that it makes it incredible irresponsible to drive without being able to pick up any sound. There are big things, like explosion sounds or sirens, but also smaller things like being able to hear if there is something wrong with your car. Or hearing if someone needs help etc.
In my opinion there are lots of extra careful deaf people who drive good and also bad drivers. It is bad to give general statement, it is similar to saying we should not allow people with eyeglasses to fdrive because the eyeglass frame limits your vision. of course these parameters increase dangers of driving, but a careful deaf driver can be a good one too. I am not deaf and there been times that I had loud music in my car and didn't hear anything from outside. it is harder but not that hard that you ban all. @bjarne bergen

It would be fine if a more reclusive or tribal person is asking, or a child who genuinely does not know how they work.

I recognise a hearing aid of cochlear implant when I see it. But I'm always interested in the different styles like is this better, for certain types of hearing loss (low or high frequency specific), newer version, or whatever. But I don't ask because it's rude. I'm just a bit of a tech nerd, always wanting to know more. Probably more so since I worked for a company producing hifi systems for a while and had to learn more about analoge and digital systems, frequencies, and other stuff

The thing is visual response is much slower, than audible response.
They feel the resonnances so much. At university, I ask a fellow deaft woman how she would hear the house alarm of our dorms and she really explained all the resonnances that walls have. My visually impaired friend said the same thing! They hear walls so.. With such a attentive self I would not worry!
Yeah, I knew the answer, but I don't think it is that silly of a question.
Perhaps it is annoying for people to ask them that all the time, but when I learned to drive, the safety instructors (and my parents) stressed how important it is to be able to hear sirens and horns, and to be able to tell where they are coming from. Otherwise you can get t-boned by a first responder of you are crossing the intersection at the wrong time, among other problems. Since they stress that it's SO important to be able to listen and hear to drive, it is not crazy to wonder if people who can't hear can drive.
HOWEVER, we live in the age of technology where you can just Google the regulations for a given state/country and answer your question without annoying the only Deaf person you know.
For a long time, I assumed they couldn't. One of my family members got a ticket when I was a kid for having ear plugs in. I don't think it's a silly question if you have no exposure to the deaf community, but it must get really annoying having people ask it over and over again.
Know of a deaf person who got hearing aids, so she got to hear more sounds than she usually would. But after 1 week she got rid of them. When we asked her why, she said the world was too noisy...

Most of the time you aren't missing anything
As a hearing person, I have some interest in deaf culture and sign language in general. But I always feel I'm stepping on a minefield because many questions can be seen as offensive and rude. Keep in mind, some people don't ask these questions to be rude, they ask because they're curious. We take for granted some of the privileges we have and I think people want to understand what life is like when you can't hear, see or speak.

My mom has this one co-worker who has cochlear implants, and he's so funny, like whenever he he bored of a conversation or doesn't want to talk to someone, or even to just play a joke, he'll turn it off, and just say,"what I can't hear you" over and over while pointing to his ears. He's also really nice and knows how to cheer you up if you have a bad day

my hearing is very bad, one naida 9, other ear is dead, but i have very good sight, so i ended up with people at work asking me if i could tell them what others were just talking about, up to 30-40m away (in a very loud factory :D)

I saw a documentary about a boy teenager who was born deaf and at 16 he got a surgery so he can hear and he hated it he was so scared of everything even the softest sounds gave him headaches so he removed his hearing aids

I have a hearing aid and a cochlear implant and yeah its very sensitive when you first get it so they start it off with the volume very low and slowly turn it up like once a month until you reach normal hearing volume.
FortisConscius yep. To be honest though, for exactly the same reason your brain is going to adapt to such an implant after a while, too. But to each their own
+M Kz lots of deaf people do that. It's not about the headaches, it's just that you can't even hear yourself think sometimes. The sound of the wind howling, keys tapping, fans spinning, dogs barking people arguing. You get used to it after a while but sometimes you really want some peace and quiet, I think everyone does :)

I am glad your asking the right questions to the right people so I don’t ask the wrong questions or assume the wrong answers.
I'm not completely deaf, but I am extremely hard of hearing. So much so that I have to read lips to understand you, but my speech is almost perfect. I can hear certain tones, but not many. A lot of people think you are either 100% deaf or you can hear, there's no in-between. I get people accusing me all the time of lying because they'll scream behind my back and I'll react to their scream. It makes me so mad when people do this. To have to deal with this "disability" and then to be accused of lying about it is so maddening. When it comes to people like me who are deaf and hard of hearing the ignorance of "normal" people is mind blowing.
Btw, just so you know, when we're reading your lips, slowing down your speech and over annunciating does not help us at all. In fact it makes it extremely hard to read your lips. Just speak to us like you would any other person. Slowing down and over annunciating just makes us feel like you're talking to us like we're idiots.
I'm hoh myself and I get so tired of having to explain that if you're behind me and I don't respond its b/c I can't hear you. I've had so many people get mad b/c I wouldn't talk to them since they were behind me and I had no clue.
Elizabeth Weaver I feel your pain. Know what else drives me crazy? When I tell people I read lips and they still look down, or look away, or cover their mouths with their hands while they're talking to me. Then they get annoyed with me because I have to keep asking them to repeat themselves! It's so aggravating.
I've also experienced the disbelief from my own family even. I'm hard of hearing in one ear and while it doesn't prevent me from having a normal conversation I have no sense of directionality and it's impossible to hear speech over background noise and getting people to repeat themselves or speak louder they either get dismissive or simply don't speak any louder. It gets tiring reminding the same people at work every day to please speak up and directly at me I often just hope I got the response I was looking for and walk away. I've been accused of ignoring and lying and it sucks but what do you do? Nobody else is inside your head if they don't want to believe you they won't
James Benevento thanks for the advice about not slowing down my speech I have a deaf friend (I don't know much sign language also probably slightly different type of sign language being Australian (ours is called Auslan "Australian sign language") so this probably gonna help
Jim B - you're like my son. He's hard of hearing and wears aids but has always refused to learn signing. Consequently he doesn't fit in either world. It's very sad.

As a deaf person who grew up in the deaf community, it makes me so happy to see that people are actually trying to recognize our culture and learn from it. People seem to perceive us as disabled, which is so not true since we live normal lives. Definitely want to see a lot more of these videos!
It's normal for people to think of you of disabled because being deaf is a disability but just because people think of you like that it doesn't mean they consider you inferior
Not all deaf people think deafness as a disability. Like I King Jordan said, "Deaf people can do anything a hearing person can do, but hear". So, even though their lives may not be as easy as hearing people, the term "disability" may make people believe that they aren't capable of being independent. That's why they don't like the label, even though medically speaking, can be labeled that way.
of course not, I'm deaf and I don't consider myself as a disabled because I don't have one (of course I have hearing loss but still I don't label myself as one) I feel like people need to be aware that deaf people are not disability at all and need to stop being labeled in medical terms
I understand that but deafness is still a disability, medically. Disabilities are things that limit someone's senses, movements, activities, thinking process, etc. not all disabilities are horrible and lower your quality of life.
But the fact that we categorically have a term for people that don't fit what we consider the "norm" or the "capable" inherently requires a sense of those people being "less-than". Ableism is a big issue in our culture, and the very notion of disabilities or people being disabled reinforces it and makes it worse. I recommend learning more about ableism and its damaging impacts.

They can feel vibrations so I understand the genre question. I have a friend who is mostly deaf and she absolutely hates the flute(it feels weird, she can feel it. But she CANNOT hears it at all. She can recognize the flute by how it feels. She described it like nails on a chalk board. Probably the easiest way to get the point across, and much prefers emo music.)

Hey just thought I’d comment as someone who knows ASL (I’m a CODA). When the first two girls were fingerspelling their names, the names were spelt as Y-V-E-T-T-E, and C-H-E-Y-A-N-N-A. But the English captions have it written down as “Evette” and “Shyanna”...
Also, this isn’t as important, but Cheyanna signs that she is a Gallaudet student, not just a college student.
What's a Gallaudet student?
Nek Gentapa Gallaudet is a famous university within the d/Deaf community. It’s a college for d/Deaf students. Many of the professors there are fluent in ASL, but some have classroom interpreters to help with the lessons. I considered going there because I felt a little bit pressured by my parents to go (since both of them are Deaf and Gallaudet actually reached out to me first) but I ended up deciding on a hearing college and they were a little bit disappointed. I’m glad I made that choice though. Since both of my parents are Deaf, we live in a town with a high d/Deaf population (because there’s a Deaf school in the town) and so everyone there signs. In fact, even in school it felt like I was signing more than I was speaking. I wanted to go to a hearing college because I wanted to take a break from all the signing. I love ASL, it’s a beautiful language, but taking a break to join hearing culture is nice to. Being a CODA has been a wonderful gift for me because it has given me the opportunity to be a part of both hearing culture and Deaf culture. But yeah, it just bothered me a little bit that the captions (and the interpreter) said she was a college student. Gallaudet has its own unique sign and it’s actually somewhat difficult to get into. They don’t just take all d/Deaf students. I felt like people should know that that girl attended the university, considering all it stands for in the Deaf community.

I love that they have these! I am a hearing person but I've always been fascinated by the world around the deaf and hard of hearing, and I've been trying to learn ASL, it's REALLY HARD!!!! but I think even though its hard to learn something so different, if it makes someone else smile than its worth it, and even with my Very limited knowledge I've been able to help and make someone else's day. :) that makes me happy.

@@YouLaToya I mean seriously! A lot of sign language is doing real actions to mimic the physical actions for instance pointing to yourself is "me". That's a universal sign as far as I'm aware, as well as a few things... There is also a universal language, but no one uses it. It exists, but yeah.

Most of the sign languages aren't even that old to say it's for historical/cultural values, many countries just created a national sign language in the 60s or 70s... They could've easily made a language that was universal up to a point (not mentioning the regional slangs, of course)

I can imagine that must be annoying, especially when they know you've booked assistance because you're deaf. BUT most people who use wheelchairs are able to stand/walk a little bit. I have many times walked up to a staff member at airports, big shops etc and asked for a wheelchair. So if they don't specifically know that you're deaf just that you need assistance, it's not a bad question. :)

I’m half deaf... when I was 2, I was in a freak accident when blew my left ear. In primary school I had to wear a hearing aid which didn’t help. So I stopped using it. When I went into high school, I couldn’t hear the teacher when they said certain words because I would confuse them for another word (e.g I thought my P.E teacher asked me to drop the cat, he actually said drop the bat). Half through term 3 last year, my mom toke me for a hearing test. Like what my mom told her before she tested me, I’m completely deaf in my left ear, she did the testing where you press a button when a certain sound came on in one of my ears. Then, she did something different. She turned to me and said, ‘Annwn, I’ll play you a recording, tell me the words you hear’. So, I did. I got a few words wrong but they were ones like the example I wrote earlier. After the two tests she turned to me and said, “I recommend the roger”. Me nor my mom knew what the hell it was until she explained it.
It’s new technology, the roger is a little microphone, which takes the shape of a pen, is worn by the teacher or anyone whom the person with the hearing difficulty wants to hear. The person wearing the roger around the neck speaks and the microphone picks up the sound waves and sends it to a hearing aid, which the deaf people has to wear in his or her good ear. It’s similar to Bluetooth, except it isn’t. The microphone is so flexible, you can put it in the middle of the dinner table and the roger would pick up everyone’s voice. My mom turned to me and asked if I wanted her to order it, I said yes so she got it for me.
It toke a few weeks but my two best friends (who knew about my deafness) were so excited for me. When I got it, I remembered that I was gonna have to give it to the teacher. I asked my mom to print out information on the roger so I can give it to my teachers. So my mom did and gave them to me, I made the little bit of effort to highlight the English bits cause there was multiple languages. When I came to school I showed my best friends first. My male friend smiled and started to goof around with it, whispering stuff in the microphone and then asking me if I could hear it. I responded yes everytime . My best female friend did the same thing, when my other friends (two other guys) found out, they ran around and hid somewhere and said stuff which I responded too. They had too much fun but I was scared on how my class mates was gonna react.
I brought it into class, nervous as hell and handed it to the teacher along with the piece of paper my mom printed out. I was too scared to tell anyone but they all noticed, some of the teachers joked around and called it their new ‘necklace’. But, When the last period rolled around one of my class mates asked the teacher, after learning the pattern what it was for. He responded with “oh, Annwn’s deaf, this helps her hear. Why? Did you think it was the lastest fashion trends for all teachers?” Everyone chuckled, of coarse a few kids, even the one who asked the question turned to me and asked if it was true. I toke out my hearing aid and showed it to the class. They found me the coolest kid for the sixth period and the teacher made a few jokes about the roger.
And here I was thinking everyone was gonna think I was weird and uncool.

Huh, I dated a boy back in highschool who had a device like that. From my personal experiences kids don't pick on people with ACTUAL disabilities. Just the ones with negative social behaviors like shyness, timidness, dressing in a way that makes them seem unable to be social, or those who are awkwardly social in some way. Too much talking, not enough, strange word usages, so on.

I am profoundly deaf since birth but I had cochlear implant for 13 years. I still get asked these questions and it does annoyed me sometime. Especially when people bring religious beliefs into it, like stop it, I am not "brave" for it, you don't need to pray for me?!
I feel awkward when they said "do you wish you could hear." I can hear with my implant however in the hearing world people were kind enough to try their hardest to help me be comfortable and provide me with any thing I need.
However the deaf community seem to want to avoid me because my parent apparently didn't "care for you enough, to try to go and fix you." And it absolutely make me furious. How dare they bring my parents into the situation?! I am not being "fixed", I still struggle a lot! My speech is still not great, and I still can't understand people when they talk to me sometime that I had to asked them to write down what they say several time. I still have to learn sign language in case I ever lose my implants. I am not "fixed" nor do I live a perfect life but it does make things a bit easy for me.
It the deaf people who makes me insecure. It hurts me a lot, I just wanted to be accepted by them. I still call myself deaf but they won't because they think I rather be a hearing person. It's painfully ironic, a deaf person who is accepted by the hearing community who is willing to change for them versus the deaf community that shun you and your parents. It gave me a hard time to the point I went through therapy because I developed depression. I just desperately want to be accepted by the deaf community! I am deaf, and I am proud of it, isn't that enough?
I am so sorry to hear about your experience, that is absolutely awful. There’s definitely a notable rift between a large chunk of the Deaf community and those who end up getting a CI. Hell, a huge problem that I’ve heard about at Gallaudet University is that there’s a massive divide between Deaf and HoH students. It’s so awful and so unfair. I wish I could meet you and introduce you to my local Deaf community, they’re so incredibly kind. In fact, today I went to the Deaf Festival and there were TONS of people walking around with CIs and there was absolutely no tension or disdain regarding them whatsoever. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not a part of the Deaf community, EVER. In every community there is segregation and discrimination and unfortunately that is exactly what’s happening to you. I’m proud of you for not feeling like you’re the problem (I’ve met a few people in your position who felt like they were broken people and deserved the ridicule). Much love, I hope things get better ❤️

It sucks because I think I would have asked some of these questions unknowing that they might be rude or disrespectful but out of genuine curiosity. Like the driving one? Driving involves a lot of hearing for alertness and being aware. Screeching of a car or honking or trains crossing so I would have totally made an ass of myself. And the universal language for sign language like I legit wouldn't know so I'd ask. This was a good video.
I agree. I get that any question will get annoying if being asked over and over again. Especially the driving one seems like a pretty legit question, though. The about vision is, you have to actually look in the direction of e.g. an ambulance to see it coming. If you are able to hear and they're using their siren, you'll hear it, no matter where you're looking. Granted, this disadvantage might just be (almost) eliminated by paying more attention.
