Autistic, and learning ASL has really helped me when I have trouble speaking. Sometimes I shut down and it's hard to speak, but using ASL not only helps me communicate, but can act as a form of stimming because it's giving my hands something to do so I'm not so overwhelmed.
I'm learning ASL because there are a lot of deaf kids at my school. I don't like the fact that I can't easily talk to them because of something neither of us can control, so I thought I'd put some effort in to get to know them. ASL is actually super fun and my friends are helping learn a ton of words that I don't understand.
Jacketeer : I am going to school for deaf education in order to teach sign language and help young deaf kids embrace their deaf cultures. I have taken sign language for all years in high school
This comment section is 99% people pointing out the "mistake" in the title. Saying something to someone doesn't have to mean it's verbal, it's literally a synonym for communicate.
There's also a big mistake in the subtitles/captions/whatever you call them UA-cam provides. Suddenly at about a minute in the video, all subtitles from UA-cam from the beginning re-appeared, but now over the burned in captions from the video itself. Pity.
@@LucysLifeInTheBabyAliveWorld Gaydar is the ability to correctly guess that someone is gay without being told. Obviously a lot of it is based on stereotypes so people shouldn't make any firm conclusions.
I have a friend fluent in ASL and German and she told me about how her follow classmates would ask her how to say swear words in ASL and sign language. Instead, she told them different ways of saying "I Love You" without telling them.😂
By German you mean like German Sign Language? I'd like to learn some of it but sign languages look so difficult because they're 3D and I'm used to kind of 1D languages/versions of languages. Spoken language is just a string of sounds following one another, written language is about letters or in line. But sign languages are just happening everywhere and they involve hands and mimics and body language. I'd love to learn some of the Deutsche Gebärdensprache though, I'm planning to go to a course in a couple of months. I'd love to be able to talk to a deaf or hard of hearing person, overstep this communication barrier without any 3rd person translator help. So far I can only read signed letters (I'm not that good in signing them yet), tell my/hia/her name and ask about yours. I wish I could learn more.
As someone who's been losing my hearing for a few years and is now severely hard of hearing, I really love bassy (lo-fi in particular) songs and playing the cello. I can still hear both, but most of the pleasure I get out of music is from FEELING it!

@I'm just saying it's okay man. English isn't my first language either. By 'senses heightened' they meant that since they have hearing disability, people think that they can see or smell better. I want to be a sign language interpreter. I’ve been learning ASL for about five years. I’m always excited to meet people in the deaf community I’m really interested to learn more about deaf culture.
They show all the people's names in the end, I'm pretty sure his name is Aaron Ockenden but I couldn't find any Instagram or Twitter accounts under his name :(
I'd love the chance to take a sign language class again. It was one of the most important languages to me because I grew up meeting a lot of deaf children and wanted so badly to be able to talk to them. I was able to take it for 2 years when I first entered high school, but wasn't able to keep learning in that environment when I moved.
When I was in primary school there were 2 children (brother and sister, the sister being the oldest) who both could hear, but needed hearing-aides to be able to understand what people said. (this part is for everyone under 30, you have no idea how technology has advanced) His devices incorporated possibilities for the now so common loop facilities but on a very small scale. In the daily 'circle-talk' in class (maybe that's something Dutch, I don't know), the person speaking had to be wearing a heavy box with lavalier mic, which would radio the sound to him, while he was wearing a similar box but then without the mic but the cord that held the box around your neck facilitating a loop so his aides could pick up the radio and he could hear what the person speaking was saying. It was only a few years ago I realised deaf people probably don't take much joy in most videos as there are no subtitles and explanations of things going on in the video. Since then I just provide subtitles in two languages (Dutch, my native language, and English) The same I'm still looking for a way to provide audio-transcription...
about a month ago i got the confirmation that im going to be deaf by the time i hit 25(18 now). My hearing has always been fine, but this past year it has been slipping away. Its funny i always said that "id love to learn sign language". Now its pretty much a reality that i have to familiarize myself with. This video has been helpful though it took away some of the fear that i have been holding on too.
Hiya! Couple of bits of advice which could help.... Check with your local council about sign language courses, Many councils do them at a great discount. Also, check out BSLZone online. They have great documentaries, tv shows etc that will help with the transition... and they're well produced and great fun to watch! Also, maybe look up your local Deaf club so you can go and meet new people. It was a bit daunting for me the first time, but you'll find some lovely people and make friends who can understand the experiences and concerns you are facing. Good luck in the future x
I am hearing impaired and have hearing aids and I absolutely hate when people find out I'm hearing impaired and they whisper 'can you hear me' repeatedly getting quieter or covering their mouth and asking me. It's not like people would go up to a blind person how many fingers am I holding up. People are just so stupid smh
Kate E oh my god people actually do go up to blind and visually impaired people and do that shit though. It happens to me all the time. I'm Deaf and blind in my right eye and I get people asking me all the time if I can hear them, or they'll stand on my right side and ask me how many fingers they're holding up. People will take my friend's glasses (she's not blind but legally blind and has very low visual capability and needs her glasses to perform the most basic tasks) and ask her how many fingers they're holding up, or tell her she has to catch them if she wants her glasses back. People are so disrespectful to D/deaf and blind people and it's just being ingrained in them more and more as the years go by.
the people who say “do we have to have the subtitles on?” clearly have never learned another language and stumbled across an accent you can’t understand for shit.
I'm american and got a box set of an Scottish series because I couldn't find it anywhere online. But there are no subtitles. It's basically unwatchable.
Spencer Davis i mean i kinda get you. spanish is my first language and i’m from latin america. there are certain accents from spain that i have a hard time understanding because they’re just so different i may think its portuguese if it weren’t for the “s” sound. i still have the respect to try my best and not make them feel like shit cuz their accent is different
exactly!! i watch a lot of anime and korean dramas (im american with latin american heritage and from nyc so im used to being surrounded by multiple languages) and im so used to subtitles idk why ppl are so stupid with subtitles. maybe watch something other than your native language for once. i can guarantee you though that thats a very american mentality unfortunately. sometimes ill watch a movie ive watched so many times with subtitles only to realize that ive understood a line or a lyric in a disney movie song wrong for so many years!
@@iluvzurara2 Oh no, it happens in the Netherlands as well, trust me. I have been to friends were I would watch some movie and quickly someone would start complaining about the subtitles... But especially when characters in a movie or serie mention a brand, store or locally known commercial-slogan or whatever, you can get lost easily. I got the dvd-boxset of Friends. Well, for me, as a Dutch guy, there are so many references to local commercials, brands, stores and what not that it's hard to follow along, thus subtitles are always on. I don't care what other people think.
My friend is deaf, she's been a part of the cochlear implant testing since it started. She was born deaf, and has been on the news and to conferences around the world talking about it. She's an inspiration
Not only that, but the audio levels kept changing, that's infuriating for deaf people too. I'm hard of hearing and have Hyperacusis. I had to keep adjusting the volume level because I wanted to hear the people when they did speak but I had to turn the volume down when it cut to a title card because the music got way louder and it hurt my ears.
One thing that always amazes me with deaf people is when they can articulate really good. It takes real dedication and hard practice to articulate without hearing the sounds coming out of your mouth. It's different for people who became deaf later in life (I think) but for people who were born deaf and are able to talk are the people I look up to. Always challenging themselves and succeeding in what they do, I could never...
It’s pinup. So it is the stereotype of the 50s, not accurate to all groups of people from the era, the majority of women from the 50s dressed a lot differently (not poofy dresses).. But she is so so pretty 😍😍😍
I don't understand the CC hate. I'm a hearing person, and I always have CC's on. Especially on movies where the sounds goes from EXPLOSION to whisper and you're just like "What in the world did that guy just say???"
I always watch Korean dramas with subtitles on so nowadays I usually put on subtitles on everything I can. Its so handy if you missed something and after getting used to it you don't notice it anymore its like natural
My hearing is alright but I have APD (auditory processing disorder) which sometimes make words sound like a "word soup" to me, they sound jumbled because my brain doesn't process them quick enough. Like someone could say something really simple to me and have to repeat it a billion times, or I could hear someone say something and say "what?" But then my brain finishes processing it a few seconds later. This makes movies especially frustrating, and subtitles are my goddamn holy grail when they're available!
I am partially deaf and cannot stand the 'You should have listened then' or the 'listen more'. It's so frustrating! Also when someone says something and you ask them to repeat it and they say 'it wasn't important'. Then I never find out what they wanted to say and the CURIOSITY EATS ME ALIVE.
Oh my god! All this time, it's just been a phase?! Thank you, For Hinguerez, for enlightening me! I wish you'd told me sooner though. It would have saved all the trouble of going to constant audiology appointments since the age of 3 and having doctors shove weird telescopes down my ear. If I'd known my half-deafness was only temporary then maybe I could have skipped that operation I had 4 years ago when they drugged me and put grommets in my ear. Oh if only I'd known! Smh.
Also partially deaf and this is the bane of my existence! You could have used the time you were wasting to say "it wasn't important" to just repeat yourself. x.x
Ugh I'm the same as you I have hearing aids and I absolutely hate when people find out I'm hearing impaired and they whisper 'can you hear me' repeatedly getting quieter or covering their mouth and asking me. It's not like people would go up to a blind person how many fingers am I holding up. People are just so stupid smh

Pity.
"Do you have to be here?" Damn I love that girl😂
I was so confused why anyone would make that comment to a Deaf person!!

What's a gaydar?
@@LucysLifeInTheBabyAliveWorld Gaydar is the ability to correctly guess that someone is gay without being told. Obviously a lot of it is based on stereotypes so people shouldn't make any firm conclusions.
I have a friend fluent in ASL and German and she told me about how her follow classmates would ask her how to say swear words in ASL and sign language. Instead, she told them different ways of saying "I Love You" without telling them.😂
haha that's the best thing i ever heard! i should do that next time lol
I'm C(K)ODA, fluent in ASL, but that honestly sounds genius, I don't know how I have never thought of that.

I think cinemas should play subtitled films more often, I'm hearing but my brain can't process the words I hear sometimes, I watched Lord of the Rings with subs and i was like Oh, is THAT what they've been saying?
Have you been tested for an auditory processing disorder?
Happens to me sometimes too, especially when the dialogue is softer than the background noises
Same for me!! But for me it’s bc I have ADHD, and I process things slower. So having subtitles helps me out a whole lot XD

(this part is for everyone under 30, you have no idea how technology has advanced)
His devices incorporated possibilities for the now so common loop facilities but on a very small scale.
Since then I just provide subtitles in two languages (Dutch, my native language, and English)
The same I'm still looking for a way to provide audio-transcription...
about a month ago i got the confirmation that im going to be deaf by the time i hit 25(18 now). My hearing has always been fine, but this past year it has been slipping away. Its funny i always said that "id love to learn sign language". Now its pretty much a reality that i have to familiarize myself with. This video has been helpful though it took away some of the fear that i have been holding on too.
trust me, im taking it all in ! that also goes for musicals
Look into a cochlear implant. Since you were born hearing, it won't be as huge of an adjustment.
I've been deaf all my life. It's fun. though I have had implants for most of my life. I would recommend them if you have the money

Kate E I'm deaf in my right ear and through most of my life people won't believe me and shout into my ear and say "did you hear what i said?"
savage m8
I'm quite severly myopic. I see perfectly with glasses. I've never had an issue with people asking me what my sight is like.
Kate E I hate that!
the people who say “do we have to have the subtitles on?” clearly have never learned another language and stumbled across an accent you can’t understand for shit.

Not only that, but the audio levels kept changing, that's infuriating for deaf people too. I'm hard of hearing and have Hyperacusis. I don't understand the CC hate. I'm a hearing person, and I always have CC's on. Especially on movies where the sounds goes from EXPLOSION to whisper and you're just like "What in the world did that guy just say???"
ALZulas omg same! I thought it was because I am not a native speaker!
I always watch Korean dramas with subtitles on so nowadays I usually put on subtitles on everything I can. Its so handy if you missed something and after getting used to it you don't notice it anymore its like natural
ALZulas I like CC with horror movies as I am a wimp and usually have the volume low, LOL.
This makes movies especially frustrating, and subtitles are my goddamn holy grail when they're available!
i can hear but my parents are deaf. i cannot function without CC
Smh.
