- ▶️CTS Burning Oil Under Hood (PCV Valve Repair)🔧.When the PCV system gets a build up of carbon, the system fails to evacuate the pressure in the engine crank case, causing extreme pressure. The pressure gets so intense, that it literally starts to push out your valve cover seals, cam seals, rear and front main seals and even valve stem seals. This will cause the engine to start burning oil out the exhaust pipe as well. This common problem is pretty much inevitable on the Cadillac CTS.
Preforming this repair can even increase gas mileage. the theory is, it causes less resistance and friction, allowing the engine to move with less resistance and torque to keep things in motion. This all results in longer engine life and better mpg. The vehicle in this video was a Cadillac CTS 2003. 03-04 CTS are 3.2lt, 2005+ are 3.6lt.

GM 3.6 Losing oil FIX: www.nthefastlane.com/losing-oil-gm-how-to-fix
Ok, I gotcha thanks for the reply and I love the video.
I did exactly what you've done to the T, but the funny thing is that when i went back to put the vent housing or pcv module, the bolts(all 4 of them) seem to be too long now. They will not clamp down the module. I tighten the bolts and my module moves around like it doesn't fasten down. Can you help me with this? What do you suggest i do? It's like i need to cut the bolts like 10mm down and it might work. Please help
pickle rick I'm a little late, sorry. Maybe you found the solution? I would suspect oil got into the bolt holes and is causing the bolts to hydro lock. Clean out the threaded holes really well with compressed air and brake cleaner.
Wow thanks , I spent the weekend doing the valve cover gasket and cleaning the pcv valve , module, and hoses and my avg mph went up from 20 to 30 huge difference ,by the way the hoses was like 80 percent clogged, thanks Nthefastlane
Thanks for the videos on the CTS!! They've all been a big help!
ive been looking EVERYWHERE (Parts stores for manuals, the Dealership, Cadillac customer service (No help btw)....) for the vacuum line diagram for a 2003 cts. This has to be the only video in. existence that helped me out, Thanks!
multijr230141 I'm pretty sure it is, I couldn't find any kind of information myself. So I put this video together knowing somebody else was going to need it. You are very welcome!
@@Nthefastlane I'm in same boat for a 08 cts di
2012 cts 120k miles. Suddenly burnt 2 qts. Drilled it out , changed the oil and no more problems. Thank you. One of the 2 small holes was plugged w carbon build up.
What were your car symptoms
I just did the same job. What a pain in the ass. Maybe because I'm 69? Only place I could locate the PCV valve was at Napa for $200. I was afraid to check a dealer. Now I'm waiting to see if it works out. Sure hope so because I was loosing a quart in 200 mi. That is a screwed up way to accomplish PCV. I was about ready to drill some holes in the fill cap and tie a shop towel around it. lol
Update on pcv change. I did exactly like the video said and it cured the problem!!!
What does it look like? That y rubber tube hose thingy?
made my car run so much better. This plus oil catch can. Runs great, thank you
That’s one hell of a job man. Thank you for putting this video out
+Edwin Figueroa Hey thanks Edwin. It sure was. Anytime man!
Yes you are right, there is a big problem with what you just addressed, thanks alot it really helped me,God bless you bro
dude, My 03 cts was smoking from the hood back in the summer and i did my own valve cover gasket replacement and last week the wife says its starting to smoke from the hood again. 192,000 miles This is what all check for first now. Thanks.
Tim Me This should be your problem. Please update here with the out come. Anytime Tim.
Awsome job thanks for showing me a better way to treat my cts from these issues
Great tutorial & video, thank you Man.
The rubber piece you added wont melt ? Isnt it on the wrong side? What if you dont add it ?
Thank you for take this video to show us about Cadillac cts very professional men.
+Luis Alejandro Jorquera Anytime Luis. Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it.
outstanding you are amazing 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌thank you 😌
My 2014 CTS has a burned oil smell, but there is absolutely zero oil on the engine block. All mechanics tell me I have no problem. I suspected the passenger valve cover gasket, as I saw a smudge all the way around it when the problem first started5 years ago. Now I am pursuing the PCV system. I checked my PCV valve, and in 2014 it was already drilled out by the factory. But probably there is a clog somewhere else. I am going to check if there is any pressure on the oil cap. Thanks for your tips.
dude you're incredible....I'm gonna do this to my saab 3.0l
thx for trail blazin:)
Super helpful!!! There’s no other info on this.
Wow, super great information, thanks!
How many miles are on this car,? I just bought one of these that has 118,000 on it. Wishing I wouldn't have now.
Sure am glad I saw your post got 2010 terrain smelling blow bye thanks bud
excellent job .
Thank you very much
Fantastic job, from London
Thanks Bob!
Really trying to understand that flapper valve. I assume both inlets are simply connected to the crankcase. So how does that valve control pressure? Maybe there's some weird interaction with the geometry from the open section being directed down to open the valve? I don't know.
I guess you might be able to install 2 inline pcv valves instead of rebuilding the flap valve as an alternative.
I think I'm going to post some carburetor cleaner down in my fuel tank and hope that does the job
Because this is to much work
For an old man 😮😮😮
Nice video, got any on timing chains?
What about the 3.0 engine. My oil is smelling like gas and I’m afraid that’s the problem too the pcv valve. Is it in the same location?
If it's the L81 3.0L Cadillac Catera engine then yes, it has the same PCV canister.
@@Nthefastlane i have 2010 cts 3.0
I have a 2000 Saturn LS2 with the same engine as the CTS. Oil is being pushed out nearly every gasket and suspect the PCV module is defective! Thanks for the rebuild info!
Wait a minute. If this rebuild worked, why did you lose a quart of oil a week and have to replace the valve cover gaskets in two months. I am confused. Did this oil separator rebuild work or not?
I replace the valve cover gaskets before I messed with the PCV system. I didn't realize I had excessive crankcase pressure at the time. The valve cover gaskets were leaking bad. I caught it when I pulled the oil cap off and there was excessive pressure. Then I went ahead and did the PCV system repair.
I've had no issues since the valve cover gasket repair and the PCV system repair. Unnoticeable oil consumption now.
@@Nthefastlane I sent you an email to ask a few questions that don't need to be cast in stone YT
@@Nthefastlane My main question was with the dates of the videos. First the PCV module rebuild and they 2 months later you talked about losing a quart of day. If the PCV mod was successful, what was causing the oil leakage as if the plug was missing? I am just trying to understand the time line. Thank you.
I am trying to understand how the PCV module works. If both engine side ports are subject to the blow by, they would push the rubber flap shut or neutral position and more so at an idle when the vacuum is strong. How does this "meter" the blow by. Manual states it is one way rubber reed value I think a white board explanation is in order. I know there are many Saturn 3.0L owners that would like a solution for oil leaks. Personally, we got three holes in the exhaust manifold and its like an ugly turkey boil fire when driving the Saturn! I need to patch the exhaust and fix the blow by issue while I change the gaskets.
I did this and changed the valve cover gaskets and my cts is still leaking oil. What do you think it is?
Sometimes the valve cover gasket gets brittle, once it blows, it needs to be replaced. Link to My CTS Valve Cover Gasket Repair: www.nthefastlane.com/cadillac-cts-valve-cover-intake

2007 Cadillac STS 3.6 l sucks oil can you give me a idea how to fix it
Dear Nethfast- First and Formost, Thank You for such an informative Video...... I have so many questions but I'll try to ask just this one... (1.) The Piece/Part featured in 3:47 segment that is a rubber piece?
LongHairDontCareAlwaysSlayedRingnBaed It is plastic with rubber O-rings.
Dear - Nthefastlane -HI- This post is interesting. 've Noticed..like a "sickening-burning-oil smell" that is only smelled while stopped at the stop lights while the windows are down..... the smell is absolutely GROSS..GROSS....GROSS..
Part A: if you were doing this for someone how much would you charge compared to a dealership (guess)????
PART B: Without giving specifics which state are you in and is it North or Southern Part of that State?
PART C:
- If Im going to a dealership and I want to have this process done.... what are the "professional names for all of the parts that I want cleaned such as: for example: (1.) The professional name of the unit that you're holding at 2:42 ? (2.) The Hole/Port that you're pointing to at 2:48 (3.) The hole that you're pointing to at 2:49 (and say this is where most of the problem is coming from/2 holes) (4.) 3:04 the PCV Hoses?(lot of build up reduces 50% of flow) (5.) 3:43 Change all O-rings (6.) 9:54 Replace O-rings (b/c flat) (7.) 10:39 Tell them to remove Throttle body...b/c 2 ports lead back to pcv modulator (Pull it off and Clean it out) (by sliding 2 big hoses down. and remove small over flow hose for radiator) ok (8.) 12:30 Remove all build from the "Intake" (9.) and clean the ports for the throttle body (10.) 13:36 On the fuel pressure regulator replace the "vacuum line hose" this prevents the fuel pressure from running sky high (11.) 13:51 replace Gaskets for the ______? (12.) 15:52 remove the clip and CLEAN the double hose on top of the intake which is call the PCV MODULE (13.) 17:12 this called the PCV MODULE definitely clean carbon from this (clean the bottom and where hoses connect piece cost $200) if cut make sure it's cleaned with parts cleaner ABSOLUTELY NO SHAVING DEBRIS to save rod/main bearings/engine (14.) 17:27 Vacuum hose which connects to pcv module (v shape) definitely clean this (even cut to clean this/blow it out for maximum airflow because it relieves crank case pressure) (15.) 27:56 Flatter Bolts for....._____________??? (16.) 28:51 CLEAN THE TWO WAY TO ONE WAY PCP PIPE (17.) END RESULT NO MORE 30-to-20 Crank Case Pressure
**MAIN THING REMOVE ALL CARBON BUILD UP
**END RESULT NO MORE 30-to-20 Crank Case Pressure
THANKS
Thanks
Could one just clean out the hoses, the inlet of the catch can, and then drill those holes, seafoam, oil change?
So is this fix the same on a 3.6 and does this fix oil in the air filter and intake tube?
+David Kohl The 3.6L does not have the same PCV system. You are going to want to replace this part on yours. Cadillac GM OEM CTS 3.6L-V6 Air Intake-Pcv Tube 12620142. This is what's causing the oil in your intake system, it's a small plastic pipe that inserts into the intake tube that has a PCV valve built in. Look up that part number I gave you.
+David Kohl let me know what year your CTS is. Part numbers change from 04-11
@@Nthefastlane Will this part fix a 2006 STS w/3.6 as well ?
How would you get a traction control to shut off on the dash to be able to maintain regular speed in.
For the CTS you put it in park, open your glove box and there's a button that you have to hold for 5 to 10 seconds and then it will light up your CD deck and say traction control disabled.
The vehicle has to be running when you do this.
And remove tpms sensors from tires.
Can this unit be cleaned or flushed out without removing?
+Abe Jr No, the built up carbon is very hard and brittle. Even if you could dislodge some of the carbon in the line, you do not want that getting into your engine.
Any videos for the 2nd gen models?
Thank you so much for sharing, by the way could you happen to know what the AC refill formula is??? My 03 Cadillac CTS lost it's sticker information?
Is there no other way to clean that modulator other than prying it open? This is something I need to do for my CTS but need to know if I need the drill and whatnot.
If you don't pry it open, you will not know if it is completely clean inside. Not to mention, the rubber flap could be brittle inside like mine and you're going to have to replace it with a new rubber piece like I did.
Nthefastlane
That makes sense. I believe that mine is clogged completely. Going to attempt this tomorrow after work. Thanks for the info, I would not have known otherwise.
my cts pops in the rear end when i pull out has there been any recallc or do you have any advice
Same i cant figure it out been there for atleast 6month say service stability
I have 2003 Cadillac CTS 3.2 v6 I had a Jerk from car when slowing down to a stop. I changed the driveshaft center support bearing and it fixed the problem. Check 1a auto video for directions.
The rear differential bushing is bad
Replaced Valve cover gaskets a month ago but then now it again started leaking oil and dripping on the exhaust below the oil cap, if i get this done, that fixes it or still i need to redo valve cover gaskets??
Chaitanya Dommeti I had the exact same problem as you, I thought I might have to redo the valve cover gaskets again, but once I did this PCV repair, I never had to touch the valve cover gasket. It never leaked again.
Thanks for the quick response, i will let you know how it went. And thanks a lot for the very detailed video demonstration, this helps a lot
Sorry i must of missed it but where is the actual pcv valve located
Nice video, any other major problems with this year model cts's? i was thinking of buying one soon
+Sickstang615 I had a TCM issue and a Bose amplifier issue. 5min swap. I'll be uploading quite a bit on the Cadillac CTS. My next repair video is going to be the water pump and the timing belt. I'll be uploading those videos shortly. I've already uploaded the radiator repair video and the serpentine and pulley repair video.
Thank you for the outstanding video!!
What do the other hoses connect too ??
What kind of repair do you have for the 2006 start 3.6 pcv system
+fredhetherjr I don't have any as of yet, but this is the part number you need to replace. PN# 17816-05660042
what's the size of O-rings needed for the hoses?
Tks
Will this apply to a 2008 3.6 DI burning oil?
+luis d It's a different setup. They reverted to a single PCV line. I'm sure they realized soon of the 3.2's issues and deleted this problem.
I followed these instructions and it didn't work. I used viton rubber. I think the reed material was too firm. What happened though is the engine would sound like a valve was hitting the piston at an idle and then at 2-4K, it sounded great. My original problem was valve cover gaskets which I replaced, but it still leaked badly near the oil pump. I'm not sure where it is coming from. More to do, but I worried I blew up the engine. Perhaps I dropped a socket inside. I had taken it all apart, got really sick for a week and when I put it back together the sound of death occurred. I don't believe the noise was caused by the mod, but my reed valve was too firm. I hope to tear back into it soon.
firm not. probably flapping around. the original is very firm plastic piece in the box.
Was gonna watch it, got way to greedy with the ads so off to another video
You can skip the ads
Is the timing chain issue related to this?
+blood117 The 3.6lt they seemed to correct the problem. I'm not sure it th e have the catch can behind the passenger cylinder head. There's one pcv line. No more multiple vacuum lines over the intake plenum. I'm about to upload the intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets repair which is a very similar process of the 3.6lt chain.
What is the o ring called at 29:25
Would this problem also cause the vehicle to shake? My CTS has been shaking while idle but as soon as the car takes off the feeling goes away. Although I feel the vehicle slower
What was your fix
Terrence Mayes turns out a plug was going bad
Thanks
I subscribed because of the great video this is and the same car my son has that I have been fixing. At 3:40 you said replace the small o rings what is that black piece part named? Also after spraying the brake cleaner in holes is it ok to flush it with distilled water? Also what are the dimensions of the long bolt with threads you used? Thanks a million you’re a life saver.👏😇⛑🔧🚖🌎
I’m trying to find a video about my reverse lights not working but I can’t find none is there any that some of y’all know
+alejo tv More than likely it's the reverse sensor switch on the transmission if the reverse lights themselves are okay. I don't have any on that at the moment. I do have quite a bit repair videos on the 03-04 CTS though.
Nthefastlane thank you yes it was the reverse light switch I was able to change it and now it’s working I’ll subscribe to your channel and once again thank you
alejo tv Glad you got it sorted out, and thank you for subscribing.
I really appreciate my Suzuki after watching the mess in this video!
+Dave Kauffman 😁
I may have to take that back, I burned up my starter cranking the engine so much, and I'm trying to change it out; the bolts just barely accessible. To better understand, look up the Suzuki XL7/Grand Vitara 2.7 DOHC V-6.
Dear - Nthefastlane HI This post is interesting. 've Noticed..like a "sickening-burning-oil smell" that is only smelled while stopped at the stop lights while the windows are down..... the smell is absolutely GROSS..GROSS....GROSS..
How much is your price to fix this? PLEASE
My cts needs this but Damn that looks like way too much work
+Jose G. Pizano You got this.👊
All my hoses are oily the coolent container is like a milk shake. I changed radiator but still the same any advice?
If you have oil in your antifreeze overflow reservoir, then you have a blown head gasket. Is it oil, or just gunked up with old antifreeze?
I think is just gunked.
I did a test on checking for blown head gasket but I don't know if I should trust that.
Ehhh... doesn't apply to the newer 2018 and up 3.6
My issue is the car will start and run but when it gets to temperature it dies and won't let me restart until cool does anyone know because I am lost
Crank shaft position sensor needs to be replaced it get hot and dies when worn out
Wow, poor design for sure. There has to be a way to By-Pass ;)
+Jordan Bronson For sure. I'm sure I could fab up something custom. But my repair should last very long time.
👍
soak it some grung off, works on my bong!
Shocked that GM put a bad engine in a Cadillac. The 3.2 is notorious for its absolute dogwater pcv, and people usually sell them before the _entire_ system breaks down and you have a puddle of oil from the crankcase in your intake. I'd tell them to start car shopping because that thing wants to die
That pcv looks like it's from not letting it get to operating temp.
@Dev JB Isn't there an issue with the VC gasket as well that restricts flow of the pcv ,and there is an update?
this video shows oil change, the title is misleading, "CTS Burning Oil Under Hood (PCV Valve Repair)"
What do you mean? This video is a PCV valve repair? There's no oil change?
Maybe you accidentally clicked next video?
Thanks now I know what I gotta do pretty soon before i blow this car up 😂
