Wow, I am having this issue with my gm 3.9L in a 2010 Lucerne. Replaced the crank seal twice in the past year and it is still leaking oil. Would this be the same in a 3.9 L? Help
My 18 yo son bought an 06 CTS 2.8 with 80k miles a month ago--grandpa car--figured it was well cared for. Started hearing a rattle noise from the front of the engine when going up our steep driveway. Checked oil and it was not even on the stick--so that was the timing chain being starved when at an angle. I immediately changed the oil and put in 6 qts of AMSOIL. Researched these CTS's and heard about oil consumption issues. One week later (about 300 miles) and we're a quart low already. Plan to inspect the pcv (and probably valve cover design next). Hoping this will fix it.
@@sergiosanchez4967 We sold the car after about 6 months. I did take off the driver side valve cover and cut in some drains along the sides to help keep oil from gathering near the blow off fitting. I think this helped a little bit, but still were using about a quart every 1000 miles or so. Good luck
Oil in intake tube ended after doing this to it, but still uses some oil still. Throttle plate stays clean as a whistle too. Hope this reduces intake valve deposits also from less oil in intake tube. 👍✌️
Thanks for the video. I just purchased a 2008 SRX 3.6L today and will change the oil and air filter. Then I will check out the PVC Valve. Does anyone cell a PCV valve that has the right size holes or do you have to alter the original? Please let me know if there is anything else on the these vehicles I need to pay attention to. Thanks for making this video!!
I have a 2015 Cadillac SRX with the 3.6L engine that burns about a quart of oil every 5k miles. Not as bad as some have reported with the older models which supposedly was fixed in '14 but still unacceptable to me. Any other ideas of what could be the culprit?
I added a catch-can to my 1989 chevy 5.0 with PCV after catch-can so then I found your video and did this with 2006 CTS 3.6 hopefully to release some of those crankcase pressures. Was thinking maybe the intake cumbustion camber would be next to think about cleaning with those added crankcase vapor to it, what do you see in the future?
So I rebuilt the top half of my 3.6. And installed new valve cover gaskets and noticed on the right bank valve cover gasket it’s sealed off with 3 little holes so that it protects oil from splashing up onto the pcv valve, my question is could this be even more of a problem? Right now I’m burning a quart every 150 miles which is crazy and it’s definitely going out the exhaust, do you have any ideas for this? I appreciate any info I can get
My 2009 camry le v4 is burning too much oil like emptying every 500 miles. The car is running smooth and give good mpg if i top up the oil every 300 - 500 miles. Will replacing pcv valve fix this issue ?
@@theraf8100 actually it created a different problem, smoke at cold start up, was pulling to much vacuum. So I ended up buying a new piece from gm it was like 30$ installed it and zero oil consumption after that
@@theraf8100 yes it was, I found that drilling it bigger made way too much vacuum and my car started smoking at cold starts, so I went to gm and purchased a new pcv valve( which is hollow lol) and oil consumption resolved. And you are welcome for answering.
Drilled the holes on my 05 srx. All I got was blue smoke at start up, and catch can started filling with oil put original pcv back on I started to keep the pcv clean on a regular basis That was 4.000 miles ago no problems.
Thank you for the video, I have a 2011 CTS4 3.6l 31,000 miles and I will be drilling the PCV valve tomorrow, I also will be installing a catch can soon. I use Mobile One, is there a better oil you recommend for this engine?
I’ve e replaced that Valve and drilled out the valve. I want to do take off the hose it attaches to but can’t figure out how to get the other end of the hose off , I don’t want to force it. What’s the trick?
I did this on my 2008 SRX and it seemed to solve the oil use at first. The PCV was very clogged and dirty so I drilled it out per your video. Now it's using the oil again. Do you think I need to put on a catch can or just get rid of the SRX?
All of those engines use oil more or less. Drilling the pcv is not a good idea - I do it to mine and it get worse, more oil in catch can (because bigger holes allow to flow more oil mist in intake). Ending with new pcv. Better install a catch can and live with this "feature" of these alloytec engines
I bought a 2004 srx that the prior owner didn't use synthetic oil, first time I checked the oil, barely showed on dip stick. I have been running synthetic and it does use a quart after hundreds of miles. Goingvto drill the pvc . Thanks for the video.
2 concerns I have with this are: Won't changing the profile of the PCV valve holes increase oil mist-contaminated air getting into the intake manifold causing valve problems earlier?? and what effect does the new drilled hole sizes have on engine vacuum? Will the change in pressure cause fault codes?
This procedure is in conflict with GM modified valve cover gasket whereas the new version gasket has three little holes trying to prevent less air flow to prevent oil consumption and less carbon buildup on intake valve on direct injection models
@@HDHeritageSoftail so you ended up buying an original part to reinstall because you were dissatisfied with how the modified drilled PCV worked for you? Am I reading that correctly?
Wassup! Man I godda show this to the mechanic that's working on my 2011 Cadillac CTS it's at a hyundai dealership I paid 🤦alot to get fix! When I found out it was losing oil now it back over there after 3weeks leaking again.
It's definitely a possibility. If the PCV system gets clogged enough it causes excessive crankcase pressure wich pushes oil past the valve stem seals and also the piston rings. When that happens, it burns oil and pushes it into the catalytic converter. Sometimes a blown head gaskets can destroy catalytic converters as well.
Just brought a Holden vz with the 3.6l in it and after finding out about this I pulled my pcv valve out and it was completely blocked not a wisper of air could get through. The cars has 262 000km on it too. So shes gonna be sludged up 😭
Hi. I know it’s been a while since you uploaded the vid.. but I have a 03 CTS and it has a different (much bigger) pcv valve and i want to know if it can be changed to something like you showed in this video. Thanks
Hi Mister, The 2003 Cadillac CTS 3.2L has a completely different PCV system. I made an entire repair video of the process here: ua-cam.com/video/Du9tp0yliyE/v-deo.html
@@Nthefastlane Actually I already did the same to my cadillac cts pcv valve.. i placed a different rubber on it and took the exact same procedure.. but i still have milky substance by my oil filler. Any idea if it can be modified to use different pcv valve?
Interesting vid...my son's '07 Buick Lacrosse has the 3.6L VVT and burns about a quart of oil every 2500 miles...I just replaced the PCV valve and made this mod, will be interesting to see if it has any effect...
so should I do this to my 3.6L engine I just bought it and it has 25k miles... is the GM 3.6L engine a good engine or should I return the car? thanks in advanced.
Mane this was a great video, it’s hard to find videos on repairs on the STS and this right here may help me. As I’m definitely having this exact issue with mines as of today. Recently changed my oil and filter, 3 days later I heard a slight knock and a little bit of white smoke out my exhaust …fast forward, it breaks down after 10m of driving and I seen oil actually coming from my intake manifold/Throttle body and my seals once all removed! Never seen before but overall PCV Was my first thought but not 100% because I never had to deal with one lol I’ll see you tomorrow PCV …oh yea metal shavings somewhat only coming from driver side intake location) I should be scared 😱 thanks mane great detail on this
How much does a PCV valve for this engine cost? I used to replace PCV valves all the time as part of a regular tune-up back when they only caused a couple bucks. Surely GM has a PCV with the holes up-sized for this fix if they've got a TSB out on it. Why not just replace with a corrected PCV instead of drilling holes in a couple dollar part?
I have the latest Genuine GM PCV in my store. I always pin every product in the video to the top comments, and also in the description if you need the parts in the future. Shop This Video: www.nthefastlane.com/losing-oil-gm-store
@@Nthefastlane Even though this is the latest Genuine GM PCV that's in your store, is it the same size of holes or are they larger holes in the new one?
@@Nthefastlane did this get answered? Would like to just order a new PVC valve, but are the holes larger? Also the link to the part on Amazon shows it's not compatible with 05 CTS. Is there something else?
I'm going to say that the holes are the same size judging by the picture that I see online. I have not ordered a new one personally, only drilled out the holes in the pre-existing OEM one.
Does this also happen with the 3.2/2.8L cts? Does the crankcase have more or less pressure the larger/smaller the engine? Would I need to adjust the size of the hole drilled out?
I can't say for sure as I don't live in a smog required State. My personal opinion would be that it wouldn't affect it too much. Exhaust gases are still going to pass through the catalytic converter before the smog sniffer on the exhaust tailpipe. Maybe someone else can comment that lives in a smog testing State. They might be able to better inform you.
As for the carbon deposits I would say it would make things better. In a sense if your PCV system is clogged up you might not pass a smog test because of the crankcase pressure getting past the piston rings and burning oil out the exhaust. When you allow the PCV system to pull more positive pressure out of the crankcase instead of it sucking oil, it's only going to pull vapors which are easily burned off once they enter the catalytic converter. A properly working PCV system will increase MPG. This happens because the PCV system pulls fumes into the intake system and burns it just like fuel. When the ECU recognizes that it doesn't need as much fuel it will spray less fuel from the injectors causing better MPG.
@@Nthefastlane Thank you for replying. I live in California and always hesitant on making any modifications. Been dealing with this oil consumption for years on my 07 CTS so I went ahead and did this modification, hoping it makes a difference.
Andre D how has this helped? I have a 05 cts that uses a lot of oil. I just replaced my spark plugs about a month ago and one of them had oil on it when I pulled it. I ended up changing the spark plug tube seals and the valve cover gasket.
I have a 2006 Cadillac SRX with the 3.6. Been having to add oil every week and a half or two weeks now for a long time! Couldn’t find a leak anywhere, so this is definitely something to check out and see if it fixes my problem. Great video and thanks for the content. If you can help me figure out why I’m having problems with it cranking, (battery is good, alternator is good and the starter also) I would love the feedback. Thanks again!
If this is necessary whats with the updated right side valve cover part# 12641261 that covers over the pcv chamber except for 3 small holes on 3.6 gm's ? seems this would have the opposite effect
It's actually called a ccv(crankcase ventilation valve) on these engines, as it is not a pcv in the traditional sense since there is no ball valve inside of them...that being said; it's all about finding the happy medium w/ these ccv systems...GM found out that the older gasket designs were allowing TOO much oil to be sucked up into the valve at high engine vacuum and because the holes were too small it would cause them to get clogged up which in turn created too much pressure in the crankcase & then it's only a matter of time until it starts developing all of the associated symptoms w/ that...the new gasket design prevents too much oil from the crankcase from being sucked into the ccv system. Add drilling the holes out larger on the ccv on top of that & it will never get clogged, it won't suck in too much oil & you will have a pretty darn reliable hfv6 that should give you many more trouble-free miles! If u have a gdi version, though, I would still recommend running a spray intake cleaner w/ PEA through it every 25,000 miles to clean up the carbon build-up off of the intake valves & pistons that accumulates on those...
I liked it so I'll give you a big ole thumbs up 👍, I'm going to do this to my 07 SRX It's got the 3.6L engine to, Thanks for the heads up on this problem!!!
Hi, I have a 2012 SRX and my engine doesn't look anything like this engine. Are you sure this information can be used up to model year 2013? Let me know.
I would like to say yes, but to be truthful, I haven't seen a newely purchased retail one yet. GM did change the design with the later models during assembly.
@@garymckee8857 If it's the same size holes I would just drilled the new one out. When I returned this vehicle back to my friend, the first thing he mentioned was that the vehicle felt much more responsive and it had quicker acceleration. It makes sense because the pistons and rods don't have to fight crankcase pressure. Also, lower crankcase pressure allows the piston rings to seal better causing better compression. All this means better MPG and more HP.
you should post a video on how to install a catch can on this particular engine. Because of the multiple lines going into the intake manifold, it seems harder to me than most engines are.
I drilled my pcv out, cleaned carbon out of intake, throttle body, tube from valve cover to intake...I reset my mileage trip odometer and I went from 21.5 mpg to 24.7mpg. This was just the first 25 miles, so will have a better idea in 1000 miles. Engine is definitely running smoother. Thanks for the info. I was consuming 1 quart every 500-750 miles. Hopefully this eleviates this issue, 221,000 miles 2007 Cadillac CTS 3.6L
Joshua Torrez My 07 is still using/ leaking oil. It stopped leaking oil at the breather tube on driverside valve cover that goes to the intake though... So I think I am going to just keep adding oil every week like I have been. I don't feel like installing a catch can. My mileage went down a little by the way, now getting around 23.0 mpg. But I think I have a coil misfiring intermittently. So I am sure that is killing the mpg a little. Good luck Josh.
After removing the rear valve cover on my 2014 buick enclave to remove the PCV valve before proceeding to the modification, I noticed how severely clogged these 3 tiny holes on the gasket was preventing a clean recirculation of the gases created by the high pressure on the system... just drilling bigger holes on the PCV won't solve the problem its important to make sure those small holes on the valve cover gadget right below the PCV valve area are completely open to allow the oil drip to the bottom of the engine otherwise it will be suck into the air intake and consumed at the construction chamber. On any modern GM gas direct injection (GDI) engine it's absolutely important to do an oil change at 5K miles or under NEVER GO BY THE OIL MONITORING SYSTEM (GM technician recommend me this)

Is a GM 3.6 v6 in a Suzuki XL 7 going to be the same mine runs through about 2 quarts a month
My 2011 Cadillac CTS performance has a different PCV valve it's plastic and had a 45° bend can you use this PCV valve on my 2011 CTS?
Does the 2011cts 3.0 take the same procedure??
Did this fix your issue.
Is this the culprit for the oil pressure issue that eventually leads to the timing chain issues with the 3.6?
yes
Keep your oil clean.
Sludging kills this engine via the hydrolic chain tensioners
Can you buy new updated pcv valves already pre drilled
If there is one I wasn't able to find it. It looks like the only ones that are sold are the ones with the original size holes.
I have the same problem on my '15 Colorado with the LFX 3.6. Will this help out and install catch can too?
Does this apply to a 2016 impala with the 3.6? Would getting a catch Can help??
Great tip, stumbled upon your video, it's like it knew I have this problem lol. Am going to do this now. Plus I subscribed!!
It happens like that! Thanks Kevin.👍
So did it end up helping your oil consumption issues?
@@theraf8100 actually it created a different problem, smoke at cold start up, was pulling to much vacuum. So I ended up buying a new piece from gm it was like 30$ installed it and zero oil consumption after that
@@kevinmonseler3592 Was the new piece a new PCV Valve? Thanks for the reply btw!
Thank you you save save me lots of money and oil it was very clear and very well done video
2013 buick laccrosse 3.6 v6 is it the same way
Thank you for the video, I have a 2011 CTS4 3.6l 31,000 miles and I will be drilling the PCV valve tomorrow, I also will be installing a catch can soon. I use Mobile One, is there a better oil you recommend for this engine?
Castrol.
@@southerncross3638 What are the advantages of Castrol?
2 concerns I have with this are:
Won't changing the profile of the PCV valve holes increase oil mist-contaminated air getting into the intake manifold causing valve problems earlier??
and what effect does the new drilled hole sizes have on engine vacuum? Will the change in pressure cause fault codes?
It's probably a fix to get you through your warranty. 😁
This procedure is in conflict with GM modified valve cover gasket whereas the new version gasket has three little holes trying to prevent less air flow to prevent oil consumption and less carbon buildup on intake valve on direct injection models
Absolutely. Dit this with my pcv valve and get more oil in catch can. Fixed it with new pcv with standart diameter of holes.
I got gmc Acadia 2011 my spark plug is very wet with oil what’s the problem
Would this contribute to clogging the catalytic converters and throwing po420&430 codes?
It's definitely a possibility. If the PCV system gets clogged enough it causes excessive crankcase pressure wich pushes oil past the valve stem seals and also the piston rings. When that happens, it burns oil and pushes it into the catalytic converter.
Sometimes a blown head gaskets can destroy catalytic converters as well.
Good job. Gotta check my 2013 Traverse tomorrow.
Same with my 2011 enclave. Its really bad on oil.
Is there a link to one already predrilled?
If there is I have not seen one myself. If I remember right, I did look for one but they were all the original size holes.
You recommend a Catch can oil. Built. Is that will low the engine oil levels?
Just brought a Holden vz with the 3.6l in it and after finding out about this I pulled my pcv valve out and it was completely blocked not a wisper of air could get through. The cars has 262 000km on it too. So shes gonna be sludged up 😭
Will this kit work on 2013 impala? 3.6l v6?
Hi. I know it’s been a while since you uploaded the vid.. but I have a 03 CTS and it has a different (much bigger) pcv valve and i want to know if it can be changed to something like you showed in this video. Thanks
Hi Mister,
The 2003 Cadillac CTS 3.2L has a completely different PCV system. I made an entire repair video of the process here: ua-cam.com/video/Du9tp0yliyE/v-deo.html
@@Nthefastlane Wow! Like they quick reply.
Will look into it and see what comes up.. thanks a lot💪🏼
Very clear and informative. Thanks.
My wife’s 2018 traverse has oil consumption issues. So does my brand new 6.2 Silverado.
GM has a revised valve cover gasket, with a built in oil baffle for the PCV passageway. I would still drill out the pcv valve like you did.
Video was so informative I had to share with Facebook
Should It flow air bidirectional? I can actually see through it after cleaning it.
so should I do this to my 3.6L engine I just bought it and it has 25k miles... is the GM 3.6L engine a good engine or should I return the car? thanks in advanced.
Never seen before but overall PCV Was my first thought but not 100% because I never had to deal with one lol I’ll see you tomorrow PCV …oh yea metal shavings somewhat only coming from driver side intake location) I should be scared 😱 thanks mane great detail on this
There is another guy who explains well too so you added to his vid--thanks.
It says that because they don't have a list of the vehicles it fits. But they are the correct PCV valves.
Thanks! I've got a 2005 sts with 140000 and I've started to go thru a quarter every 1000 miles or so. Hoping these help.
Hey Tyson, wondering if this worked for you?
Nice job on the video. I'll be watching more often. 👍
Does this also happen with the 3.2/2.8L cts? Does the crankcase have more or less pressure the larger/smaller the engine? Would I need to adjust the size of the hole drilled out?
2.8 cts I own yes same valve did mod on weekend ,one of my holes was plugged drilled all three as in video cleaned hose with carb cleaner
Would this mod increase carbon deposits in the engine? and possibly effect smog emissions?
Hi there , is this problem with all GM cars for example Hummer H3 3.5 or 3.7 litres engines
as well ?

Do You have whisteling sound after that mod?
I have a 2006 Cadillac SRX with the 3.6. Been having to add oil every week and a half or two weeks now for a long time! Couldn’t find a leak anywhere, so this is definitely something to check out and see if it fixes my problem. Great video and thanks for the content. If you can help me figure out why I’m having problems with it cranking, (battery is good, alternator is good and the starter also) I would love the feedback. Thanks again!

How'd it go? I have a 06 srx v6 same problem. Tryna find a fix or something to help with oil consumption.
I didn't know this i will try it .
Will this help with the timing issue that the 3.6vvt had in the 2012 area
Nope
Same thing for Cadillac SRX 04?
Stupendously helpful video. Truly excellent.
Thanks TJ! Glad you enjoyed it.
Is it true that this can lead to timing chain failure if the pcv isn't freer flowing?
Yes its part of the problem. You also need to do regular oil changes and use a good full synthetic oil.

If you buy a replacement PVC valve does it have larger holes in it?
I would like to say yes, but to be truthful, I haven't seen a newely purchased retail one yet. GM did change the design with the later models during assembly.
@@Nthefastlane Thanks I'm going to purchase one tomorrow.
I will post if there is a difference.
@@garymckee8857 was there a difference?
@@86diggler sorry I forgot to get back to you and the answer is no it's the same diameter holes as OEM.

Hey hows it fairing out now? add any quarts of oil?
@@jonrossi5110 I have , not as much as I had previously.
you should post a video on how to install a catch can on this particular engine. Because of the multiple lines going into the intake manifold, it seems harder to me than most engines are.
I saw a 3 0l in a Cadillac which had a new designed valve cover gasket to help minimize excessive oil in the pcv system
M F how has it been? I have a 05 cts 3.6l that uses a lot of oil too.
Joshua Torrez
My 07 is still using/ leaking oil.
Very easy instructions, thank you!
Hello , is this true for Acadia GM as well ?
The Buick Enclave 3.6 L has the same valve and that's what they recommend doing to it.
