I own a Sentra 2014, followed the tutorial and everything came out great. No leaks or other issues, and I did not used a torque wrench. Taking the 'dipstick' off did not take long at all. The car had 83 thousand miles. The oil was extremely black, since it hadn't been changed. The filter was also very black; it certainly needed to be replaced many miles ago. I did buy the products at the dealership. The metal pan did not have much in the way of metal particles, so I will not change that next time. If I had known better, I 'd have changed the oil at least at 30 thousand. I will now change it more frequently. I think that at least changing the filter will not affect anything, if you have waited too long. It's time consuming but easy.
Even if you only pull out a quart and replace it with fresh CVT fluid that can make a huge difference in smoothness. It makes it feel almost like it was new again. Also that stiffness when putting it in drive from park goes away. That is something I noticed with even regular automatic transmissions that are not CVTs. When it happens you can still get it out of park and into drive but that stiffness is just not normal. It is nice to see it goes away with clean fluid. Even that little cartridge filter can make a difference on its own. Depending on your vehicle the gasket for that cover is either a rubber O ring or a metal one that is partly an O ring. I looked on the Nissan parts website to see which gasket I needed because one will not work in the place of the other.
Hello UA-cam, lots of people commented on my previous video about changing the CVT filters. So I decided to make a video showing how it's done. This will help many people, so like and sub.
My 2017 Nissan Sentra was jumping at 80mph not wanting to go past that so I put new CVT fluid in it and a new air cooler and transmission condenser. 100% fixed everything the car was doing drives 100% now
@@philliphardin6161I'm having the same issue!!Changing the fluid seems to help for 15k miles or so. Wondering if I should do the other things you did as well.
Excellent video. Still a little confused about the final part. Which is removing excess oil. Thank you for all the explanations. Very clear to understand.
IF ANYONE HAS ISSUES WITH THEIR FLUID CAP -- mine was being very stubborn, but used a ziptie to create a loop that laces between the metal and plastic and got better leverage with that. Came out with a good pull.
Nice trick. I didn't see your comment sooner, so I bought a pair of small thin screw drivers that fit into that tight space. With flat head in the left hand, I pushed the tiny tab out, and pried the cap out with the other screw driver in my right hand, while holding the tiny tab at the same time. Took me 4 hours of research to get there.lol
Thank you so much for the great video! I just got my parents old 2013 Sentra with 60K miles, and I have been so scared of the CVT failing (It is a huge problem with these cars) So It is a big relief to see your Sentra with 160K miles still running with good CVT Fluid Maintenance. You relieved so much of my stress!
They last fine if you change the fluid often (if you are able to do it yourself it's much cheaper, so I do it more often) I do my gf car every 30k which is about 1.5 years of driving for her. S far she's at 180k km and no issues, still works fine. Bought car at 55k, changed fluid at 60k, 90k, 120k, 150k and just recently at 180k. If I can avoid problems with the transmission, which is the biggest problem with these, the rest is no big deal, it's just been regular maintenance and wear items. Oil changes, brakes and tires.
I had that issue w a used one. I found out the critical upkeep to keep the cvt going is fluid flushes. It seems like most of the ones that fail do so because people had filthy fluid and didn’t change it due to the difficulty compared with most other cars. After watching this video it looks like it isn’t too bad after all, a little more work than some cars but not bad.
Great job at explaining everything. My Sentra only has 28,000 miles on it and I will change the trans fluid every 30,000 with new filters. I have have heard these are sensitive transmissions and i want it to last. Also you have done a great job learning and speaking English! Keep up the good work!

Hi, it was really a great video. I saw a lot of videos about cvt, but yours was the best. This is very helpfull for me...Thankyou so much...best regards from Germany
There is one thing you missed and it's called for in the service manual. There's transmission debris that sits inside the transmission cooler block(the one in front of the transmission by the radiator). Nissan Sells a flush spray to remove this debris from in there. This is also advised when performing this service you're doing since removing the fluid makes it easier while the transmission cooler sits somewhat empty. The black hoses have to be removed and the spray goes through the bent pipes and putting a clear hose on one end to route the debris onto a pan. Cheers
Thank you for such a detailed video and the part #'s and torque for the pan bolts. I would feel more comfy just measuring what came out and putting the exact amount back in.
The video is almost perfect apart from the temperatures, At what temperature do you check the new fluid level? You said run the car for 20 minutes however 20 minutes running time in a hot atmosphere is not the same temperature in a cold atmosphere? Does the manual say the exact temperature please?
Very helpful. I have a Versa and haven’t seen a good detailed video for it yet. But it looks so similar to your car. I just need to confirm the oil temp when doing the overflow. Being at normal operating temperature makes sense though.
Hello bro, I want the original oil, but I went to the dealership, and the code they gave me is NP/QCVT1LTNS3. However, the one in your video is 999MP-CV0NS3. Are they the same oils?
The maintenance worker changed the transmission fluid for my 2018 Nissan Sentra by adding a large amount, which caused a malfunction in the rpm. How can I safely reduce the fluid to the normal limit? Can I open the 19 mm valve and let the fluid out until it stops at the overflow limit?

Hi, Excellent Video! Thank you! Can you confirm how many quarts of the transmission fluid did you actually need? I read that the manual says 6.9, but I have seen other videos that only used just over 5... Thank you!
so, actually, what throws the surplus to bring it to the level, is it really 4 qt that is carried in the cvt oil change already bringing it to level or am I wrong?
There is oil trapped in the transmission. You put 4.5 quarts in and after running 20 minutes and shifting through the gears, leave motor running and pull drain plug. The excess oil will drain out. It won’t be 1/2 a quart.
I was told the transmission oil change on these Nissan cvt transmission will stop the “rumble strip vibration”. Seeing this in a lot of Nissan forums. Can you confirm?
is this a bad idea to do to my 2013 versa with 150,000 it has a cvt transmission ,I don't think the previous owner ever change the fluid or ever did a filter change on it?
No need to take the pan off unless you are changing the metal filter. Otherwise - remove the 19mm bolt and open the 5mm overflow and all the fluid will drain out without having to remove the pan. Replacing the 19mm bolt and closing overflow, then add new fluid. Start engine, open the overflow let excess drain as engine is running. When flow ceases...close the overflow and tighten the 19mm bolt.
Some people are just lucky man. 168k miles and that pan looked great. Mine was serviced at the dealership at 84k miles only to find out they never changed the filters. So now at 93k miles I decided to change it again with a local mechanic. I suspected something since it was shifting late. Lo and behold the magnets on my pan looked like SEA URCHINS with the metal shavings on them. I'm so pissed off at the dealership. Anyways, you car has no metal shavings on the magnets even at 168k 😮. Could the metal shavings on mine come from them overfilling when they did that oil change at 84k?
@@2009daviduhs I serviced the car about 2 times before this service on the video. I have another 2022 Sentra with 91k miles and haven’t serviced the cvt, lol, looking forward to making a video on it soon.
I used that on my 11 Altima 2.5 cvt and it went out less than a year later at around 130,000. I even had an additional aftermarket transmission cooler. $4,000. Bearly worth fixing. I'll never use Valaline again.
Never use anything other than nissan cvt this stuff is made for them it expands and contracts much more than other fluid. Everyone I know who put other than nissan fluid in it broke it or didn't last more that 10k miles
Hello friend i change transmission fluid on my sentra 2016 but I don’t understand i also take off a allen bolt inside how many quoters takes? I put 4.5 , but i saw in internet many says 7.0 or 7.5 what is right?
I just brought a 2015 SV with 23k on it I went with AMS oil CVT fluid Where I made the mistake was using a Amazon transmission filter kit The cartridge filter was too long and I cracked the filter housing installing it. I had to buy a new housing and OEM filter plus reset the transmission Now the car drives perfectly no stutter during take off and my fuel mileage increased too Don’t buy auto parts from Amazon must are counterfeit parts.
I did a drain and fill on my 2017 Rogue and it is already a lot smoother. I did that at 42,000 miles. When I put it into drive or reverse it doesn't whine so much now. I may do one more tomorrow along with that hidden filter. I bought a case of Aisin NS3 so I may as well put it to use. Some people say that it may be the OE fluid (or one of them). It is a deep blue color and isn't NS3 green? I am not 100% sure but other people seem to be having good luck with non OEM fluids anyhow. It is not like that Volkswagen I had that seemed to not like any other fluid than the dealer's. It is already a lot smoother on the new fluid. I could not get my Bluetooth OBD2 adapter to show the temperature on the Torque app so I just got a $30 infrared thermometer (the kind with the laser built in for aiming). I am glad I did it too. I took it for a ride once I checked the fluid level. On mine there is a 14 MM bolt on the transmission that you take out with it running in a certain temperature range and the excess fluid will come out. I know doing this with it running may scare some people but what should scare them more is underfilling it by not running it. Just run it at idle, no need to have the wheels dangerously turning or any of that!!
Yes 100% always ONLY use the Nissan fluid for their CVT transmissions. I change the fluid on my gfs 2013 Sentra every 25k km. I replace the paper filter every time as well. The metal filter inside the pan I did at 100,000km and will do it every 50k km from now on (or every other fluid change). It is probably overkill, but since I do it myself and the parts are relatively cheap (compared to replacing an entire CVT) it doesn't bother me. We are saving for a house and want to have a huge down payment (like half or more) so we need our 2 cars which ate both paid for to last as long as possible with no major problems. My car is a 5 speed 2013 Ford Focus hatchback (382,000 km, runs like a top) and hers is a 2013 Nissan Sentra SL with 143,000km. I expect at least another 3-5 years of relatively teouble free ownership on both cars.
No lo manejes! Ahi mismo lo dejas prendido 20 mins y mientras prendido sacas el exeso. Luego pones el tapon cuando se debilita el flujo. Claro debe estar a nivel el carro
I took the front part loose and worked between the shield and fender. I took all the fasteners out for the front part and one fender bolt about 11 o’clock position of wheel well. Not difficult working on the little filter behind it.
It could save your CVT transmission from a $5000 replacement fee. I change the transmission fluid myself every 20k miles to extend the life of the transmission.
Am driving Sentra 2015 and now its 200000k and never changes the CVT fluid, the technician said if you change now the fluid your transmission will fail.
I changed the transmission fluid at 100,000 miles, Nissan Rogue and no issues but I’ll be changing filters next time at 120,000 because I didn’t have all gaskets at the time
Changing the fluid will either fix the problem or make no difference (if it's a mechanical issue rather than bad fluid), so I would change it to see. I had a Dodge Caliber with a Jatco CVT and it started giving me those symptoms around 30,000 miles since the last fluid change. CVT fluid loses its ability to do its job after it gets so old. Change the filters and clean the pan if you do. I just did the full job on my mom's 2018 Nissan Sentra at 100,000 miles because it had never been changed. Changing the fluid hurt nothing and it actually made the transmission slightly quieter. I used a meat thermometer from Walmart with a wired probe that I slid all the way down the fill tube to the bottom of the pan to read the fluid temperature. I had to bend the probe into a curve to match the fill tube so it would fit. You want to drain the excess fluid at 104 degrees Fahrenheit instead of going by how many minutes the engine has been running like this video suggests, because it could be inaccurate based on the ambient temperature outside.
Yes mine is slipping as well, will changing the fluid and filter fix this issue? Or will I have to change the transmission with a good used one. Thank you for any info
That is a great job. I didn't know you can level the fluid by running the car and taking off the transmission bolt. Do you run it in r or d or p? i assume p
Awesome. I have 190k if nissan only would tell customers more about this most are used to the ect and never think they have to. I rather have an ect personally but I have changed mine every 30 to 50k and mine fine at 190 now I need replace cv axles and the output seals little wet around the seals now and axles ripped the boots
I have a 2018 nissan sentra. I was told today by the dealership service department my car doesn't have a transmission filter. They also told me it was going to cost me $275.00 to have the transmission fluid changed. My back yard mechanic friend said only dealerships can do them on this year of nissan. Is this true? I would like to save a bit of money if I can right now because I might not have a job soon. Thank you in advance for any information regarding this.

I was thinking how nice it would be if that filter was a spin on. It would make changing it similar to changing oil.
I created a PDF of this video in case you want to print it out when you tackle this project. It makes life a lot easier, great video, very informative! If anyone wants this pdf to print out just let me know.
Bro please send that pdf! I will appreciate it
Did you say turn the AC on to cool the engine off or am I bugging?
When replacing the whole transmission how much transmission fluid do i fill up with??? No flush
I seen the part where turn on the car got through all gears and loosen bolt as the car is still On. Trying this
A question friend, a 2016 nissan sentra transmission, I can put it on a 2015 sentra too?
Hi, Excellent Video! Thank you! Can you confirm how many quarts of the transmission fluid did you actually need? I read that the manual says 6.9, but I have seen other videos that only used just over 5... Thank you!
4.5 quarts to service. There will be runoff.
Very very nice video. I am planning to do it in Nissan versa note 2016 this weekend. Muchas gracias por el video
so, actually, what throws the surplus to bring it to the level, is it really 4 qt that is carried in the cvt oil change already bringing it to level or am I wrong?
There is oil trapped in the transmission. You put 4.5 quarts in and after running 20 minutes and shifting through the gears, leave motor running and pull drain plug. The excess oil will drain out. It won’t be 1/2 a quart.
Oh, would you mind putting down the part #s for the pan gasket and strainer filter?
I will post them in the description soon.

Great video!! Very well done
hello, thanks for this video. unrelated question, why is your pinky nail longer than your other nails?
Is there a difference between ns2 and ns3 fluid under ny hood says ns2 it's 2013
Please let me know where did you orderd from?
Thanks !
DO A 2014 NISSAN HAVE FILTER? WHAT PROBLEMS CAUSED BY NOT CHANGING IT
I was told the transmission oil change on these Nissan cvt transmission will stop the “rumble strip vibration”. Seeing this in a lot of Nissan forums. Can you confirm?
I would like to know too
is this a bad idea to do to my 2013 versa with 150,000 it has a cvt transmission ,I don't think the previous owner ever change the fluid or ever did a filter change on it?
Great video explains it all in a very good way thank u so much
How is this car doing? I have a 2014 with 110k, I'll be happy if I make it to 180k with the original transmission
If I just want to change the paper filter more often do I have to drain the fluid? Thanks Mike
Define more often?
From what I have seen you could do drain and fill every 30,000 miles and change filter the second time every 60,000 miles.
Wait a minute. Wouldn’t all the fluid come out if you open the 19mm? Wouldn’t you open the 5mm Allen key overflow to let it level itself out?
No need to take the pan off unless you are changing the metal filter. Otherwise - remove the 19mm bolt and open the 5mm overflow and all the fluid will drain out without having to remove the pan. Replacing the 19mm bolt and closing overflow, then add new fluid. Start engine, open the overflow let excess drain as engine is running. When flow ceases...close the overflow and tighten the 19mm bolt.
No the overfill is what let's it keep the right amount of fluid if there's to much fluid it runs out the overfill tube exactly what the name is
what about the crush washer for the drain plug ? is there a aprt number for that?
They are everywhere. Buy a bunch and keep them on hand
Wow. Great video. Step by step 👍
Where did you get that service manual from
Some people are just lucky man.
Thanks bro just changed my oil runs like butter now used a valvoline synthetic cvt fluid always like to switch out my fluids for synthetic
I used that on my 11 Altima 2.5 cvt and it went out less than a year later at around 130,000. I even had an additional aftermarket transmission cooler. $4,000. Bearly worth fixing. I'll never use Valaline again.
All transmission fluids are synthetic in every vehicle
Never use anything other than nissan cvt this stuff is made for them it expands and contracts much more than other fluid. Everyone I know who put other than nissan fluid in it broke it or didn't last more that 10k miles
Hello friend i change transmission fluid on my sentra 2016 but I don’t understand i also take off a allen bolt inside how many quoters takes? I put 4.5 , but i saw in internet many says 7.0 or 7.5 what is right?
@@giannakos3 7+ is when you rebuild your transmission. For a simple fluid change it only takes about 5 quarts or bit less.
@@SamAkaVlogs thanks
Ola irmao meu sentra 2015 tem 86 mil km cmo saber se devo trocar o oleo da transmissao
i’ve been having a hard time trying to put the filter bolt back.. it seems it doesn’t want to tight up it stays loose.. any advice ?
You’ve probably already stripped it, don’t over tighten that’s why I said it in the video
I never saw the paper filter install?
Will 2019 transmission work with 2014 sentra? Are they using the same transmission?
Yes
I just brought a 2015 SV with 23k on it
I went with AMS oil CVT fluid
Where I made the mistake was using a Amazon transmission filter kit
The cartridge filter was too long and I cracked the filter housing installing it.
I had to buy a new housing and OEM filter plus reset the transmission
Now the car drives perfectly no stutter during take off and my fuel mileage increased too
Don’t buy auto parts from Amazon must are counterfeit parts.
Does the car need to be completely level when doing this? Or can i just jack up the front end to do this?
Preferably leveled
😊
is the fender water shield a pain to get off?
I took the front part loose and worked between the shield and fender. I took all the fasteners out for the front part and one fender bolt about 11 o’clock position of wheel well. Not difficult working on the little filter behind it.
So if you change the paper filter when you just drain and refill the transmission fluid will the fluid not drain when you remove the paper filter?
no
I have a 2014 @ 80k miles I just bought so there's a chance it's never been changed. Is this a safe procedure?
It could save your CVT transmission from a $5000 replacement fee. I change the transmission fluid myself every 20k miles to extend the life of the transmission.
Watch a few different videos to get a better idea.
Am driving Sentra 2015 and now its 200000k and never changes the CVT fluid, the technician said if you change now the fluid your transmission will fail.
I changed the transmission fluid at 100,000 miles, Nissan Rogue and no issues but I’ll be changing filters next time at 120,000 because I didn’t have all gaskets at the time
Thank you for making this video
My 2013 Sentra SL is at 69,000 mi. It just started jerking when accelerating and rpms go up and down quickly. Would a cvt fluid change make it worse?
If my transmission is showing sings of slipping will a transmission fluid change make a difference?
I have same question here.
Yes mine is slipping as well, will changing the fluid and filter fix this issue? Or will I have to change the transmission with a good used one. Thank you for any info
That is a great job. I didn't know you can level the fluid by running the car and taking off the transmission bolt. Do you run it in r or d or p? i assume p
On P
Did you ever have to change the transmission to a new one? Did your CVT ever break down?
NO, it's the original, very smooth shifts 204,000 original miles.
You were told BS. Has a paper filter and metal filter. Someone wants your money.
The simple way is just to train. Transmission fluid to a pan, whatever you took out, just replaced it simple 123😅😅😅😅😅. Replace the filters. That's what I do on all my cars. never had any problem with my cars
