Coffee doesn't just change our alertness levels (anti drowsy); it's as you described "laser focused". It's a rush, and perception becomes limited to tasks. It makes us human doings, instead of the human beings we are. And because of our socialising, our self worth, value, and level of support feels tied to doing. So when we leave a doing mindset, it can feel like we're leaving safety. Being off coffee and having free roaming perception for the first time can feel scary because it is unfamiliar. But it's actually who we are, and how we're meant to be and connect with life and each other. One way to approach it is to perhaps re-live our inner childhood as if it wasn't stifled (stifiled by schooling, judgements of the time, parenting styles of the time, domestication without time in nature, etc) Some people say they don't feel like themselves off coffee. What they're actually saying is that they don't feel like their habitual self. Being off coffee after an entire adulthood on it, is a sobriety where truer self can come out and play and explore more freely for the first time.
That makes total sense. I've been a coffee drinker ( from 1 to 3 most days and maybe a bit more in my younger days) I'm just 80 (!) and been on coffee for 60 years; though often left off it for a few days but always went back. I agree, You get to feel a cetain way very gradually and it feels just sort of "wrong" to not do the coffee thing. I don't suffer from anxiety or anything and am very fit and well generally, no medications, though coffee does give me the jitters and palpitations sometimes but it wears off. Something feels "off" by not having it and I know what you mean by we assume a kind of "false self" which feels normal and our little addiction (coffee for me) keeps us that way. Funnily enough I never got into energy drinks, or wine or smoking, they just didn't do anything for me. I tell myself that , although I smoked a few cigs at 18 years, it never caught on - so surely it must be the same for coffee - I didn't need coffee when I was 10 so why don't I just let go of it now ( before it's too late !!! ) thank you for your contribution , there's more to this caffeine thing than most people are aware of.
So beautifully stated. This comment should have at least 100 likes! I could not agree with you more. Your explanation of what coffee can do a person is so spot-on in my opinion. It is a rush and it does alter our perception and we make all kinds of excuses about why it's not a problem, even when we've been on that substance for longer than we can remember. It's amazing to be free of it and to be more present in the moment, unaltered by this drug.

Ok, that's kind of hilarious that your body has finally given up hoping for caffeine! Lol! I did not know you were aiming for ketosis so that's fascinating. I'll have to look to see if I missed a video on that. The cycling supplements for effect is also what I have heard about coffee. There are folks that reserve it for days that they really need the boost because the body habituates exposure very quickly. I do keep meaning to schedule a coffee elimination but then I forget and buy more coffee...ugh! I might have to leave myself a note on the grocery list. I would really like to not be dependent on coffee too! Thanks so much Holly for all of your deep research, analysis and sharing of your discoveries with us!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! 🙏 Yeah, I am glad my body is finally giving up on it! lol...That's a good point about cycling coffee too. It's so hard for many people to do that though. I imagine if I were to drink it, I would get into a habit of drinking it everyday. It's the only thing I've ever been hooked on before. It's pretty powerful stuff! It is nice to not be dependent on it. :) Regarding the ketosis - I have been eating so low carb for a pretty long time that I am often in ketosis. When I was drinking coffee, I would add coconut milk to it and it would help give me more calories and fat. So I am now continuing to add it in, just after I eat and sometimes with blueberries. :) It seems to help me stay full longer too. I've been doing a bit of an experiment over the past couple weeks and it's related to diet and ketosis, so I will probably do a video on that coming up.
Check your ferritin levels. If they are less than 100 then it could contribute to your thyroid issues among other things. May not be an issue since you eat a lot of meat. However, to all you women out there - ask your doc to check your levels regardless of what your hemoglobin and RBC count is. Great video as always!
Having been carnivore for two years with much health improvement, unfortunately my sleep has gotten worse. I tired many supplements and herbs as well as techniques. I recently gave in and tried L-Theanine and WOW. For the first time in years I’m actually sleeping well into the night. I normally don’t recommend or suggest supplements but this one has been a game changer.
I am so happy to hear that! I too recently tried L-Theanine and it helped me sleep longer for a couple of nights and then stopped working. But, I hope it keeps working for you and others who see this comment. I may try it again later. I made a bit of a change recently and for the last 3 out of 4 nights, I slept till 5 AM Instead of getting up at 2-3 AM. I will do an update on that later once I know for sure what I'm doing that's working. I need to see how it goes and make sure it continues to work before posting about it. I am so happy the L-Theanine is working for you though! It's definitely worth trying.
Just for general public: you do not have to suffer so much. Just gradually reduce the dosage of caffeine until it comes to zero. I have quit caffeine 4 times: twice cold-turkey and twice the gradual way. Gradual way also takes 1-2 weeks, just without horrible headaches and all the suffering. Every time started using it again because of some major stress. Going to quit again, by all means gradually🤷♀️
You triggered me to stop as well (I was drinking 1 cup a day). I fall asleep faster and my digestion is better. I started drinking green tea 2 days ago (1 cup a day) but no impact as of yet.
We store less nutrition and energy as we age. The all-day coffee cravings are from low energy, I had them. Sleep is only a necessary turn off switch, nutrition and energy are where the refreshed sleep feeling comes from. You may find yourself sleeping more if you're not fully energized, but true energy comes from the right sources, not just a general diet. It's also important to remember that after the age of 30, our body stores only half the energy and nutrition, and our organs consume most of it, leaving other systems to do without.
I feel like I am just starting to feel what true energy is and I am enjoying it. In addition to sleep and the right food/nutrition - exercise really helps me with energy too.
Hmm God, well I certainly give you much deserved credit for giving up the coffee. Personally, I've never tried to do that. I've been drinking it since I was 12 ... so I don't know. I'm on a bit of a regimen now with prescription meds for helping with blocking the pain of Advanced Degenerative Spine Disease ... and I find that it helps to kick in the meds better. The meds don't make a person feel all 'woo woo' or anything like that - but, they apparently block the pain signals between my brain and my damaged nerves in my spine and legs that it's all associated with. Perhaps it's all in my head (wouldn't surprise me one bit .. haha), but I swear the caffeine helps with kicking things in faster. 🙂
Hey Davin! 🙏 I can’t imagine having to deal with advanced degenerative spine disease. I am so sorry you have to deal with that. It sounds like you’ve found a regimen that works for you, and if caffeine helps, then good!
@@LifeDIY Yeah, thanks so much Holly. I went through a very rough period for a while and finally had to face some facts to find out what was going on. After several MRI's, and being completely di-sected spine wise, they found the root of the problem. I finally got some help - it was clearly beyond my own will or control. There's no cure - but, at least now I know what I'm dealing with and why I was in so much pain day to day. On the bright side , which I try to look at each day now - it's sort of given me a new purpose ... and for that part, I'm grateful. 🙂
I might have missed it and atruggling to find it in the video now if it was there... how many coffees were you drinking previously and what type of coffee was it? As in espresso, filter or cold brew for example?
Sorry I don't think I shared the details in this video, but it's in another one. I only had 1 kind of weak coffee in the morning super early around 3 AM (pour over method) - the brand of coffee varied. Then maybe 3-5 hours later I would have a yerba mate (50mg of caffeine), or a different drink like another small coffee. But, it was usually just the yerba mate.
I forget, are you carnivore? If not, is that something you would consider, especially for Hashimoto's? My sister reversed autoimmune, metabolic and mental health conditions on carnivore. Just a thought.
Thanks for sharing this! That's awesome to hear about your sister's improvements. When I gave up gluten and dairy, it got rid of all my Hashimotos symptoms though sometimes I get a big hypothyroid from under medicating. For many with Hashimotos, gluten is a huge trigger and that's the main trigger for me. It was a massive difference for me when cutting those out. I am currently eating nearly carnivore, with a few add-ons of some coconut milk, a bit of blueberries or other fruit, and some low carb fruits like cucumbers, peppers, olives and whatever else my stomach can tolerate. Do you ever miss other foods or having a variety? For the last couple of weeks I have eaten ground beef every day and just making a little sauce for it and adding some peppers or other things I mentioned make me so happy because I want more of a variety.
@@LifeDIY For 3-1/2 years, I have been a completely fat-adapted endurance athlete thanks to carnivore. The common misconception about carnivore is the lack of variety. I eat a variety of nose-to-tail ruminants such as beef, bison, goat, lamb, moose (when avaialable), and venison. Because I'm fat-adapted, I am able to run 100 km to100 miles a week on just ruminants, water, and salt. BTW, I'm a 65 y.o. leam mass hyperresponder. Thank you.
@@MyFatAdaptedLife That is awesome to hear! I am a LMHR too. You sounds like you're in incredible shape! I love hearing it. I know everyone is different in their preferences, but I think it's great you're happy with the options you have. Some people do an elimination carnivore diet with the intent of adding things back in and others are happy with just meat over the longer term. I still want more of a variety personally. I wish I wasn't intolerant to so many things but I am happy with whatever I can have. I have been eating super low carb for some years now, but I do have low cortisol issues which end up causing problems (low glucose) when I eat just meat and nothing else. It's interesting to hear about the different experiences people have.
@@MyFatAdaptedLife Oh, that's great! I could be wrong but it seems like more guys tend to be super satisfied with all meat all the time... But, it seems like females tend to want to add some things back in. My functional doctor mentioned that some females just do better with a bit of carbs or add-ins.
I quit coffee last month before I look up the effect of withdraw. I know that it was going to be hard so I switch to ice tea and figure that will help. Was drinking Ice tea every time I feel like coffee. Not going lies, I failed once or twice and drink coffee. I even drink ice tea and then ice coffee both on the same day a couple of time as well. It have only been two week ago that I final quit caffeine. Not going lie, it was hard. There were a lot of issues. It is still hard, but I am keeping at it. I accidentally drink a fruit drink refresher that have caffeine almost two week ago. I didn't know it have caffeine. My body just trying to function without coffee. It maybe at least a month or two before I can say I feel ok. Maybe by next year, I can be back to normal or whatever that is since I have been drinking caffeine base drink for long time. I don't know what normal is anymore. I plan to avoid or stay away from any caffeine base drink after I survive the withdraw.
I totally understand. I used to love those refresher drinks years and years ago. I know how hard this is. I also don't know what normal is anymore. I don't ever want to go through the withdrawal headaches and fatigue again though. It's very difficult for about a week or so. But, it sounds like you've got this under control. It'll get better. I find that I am working out a lot now to get more energy. I've been trying to make it fun by doing VR workouts on the Quest (the game is called Supernatural). Yeah, people don't realize how tough it is to give up the caffeine. But, it will get better!
I am 3rd day off coffee now and I feel like a slug. I miss the texture already, I can't get over that can't substitute it with anything that has the same thickness and feel. Maybe I sound like an addict but if I find a liquid that can give me only the benefits without the negatives I would stop coffee indefinitely.
Good job on making it this far! You're going through the worst of it right now. There are some alternatives or replacements. Some people like Teecino: amzn.to/3X7XSZF. It seems like the closest replacement to coffee that I've seen (for texture/taste). I haven't tried it though.
Yeah that's tough. I used to be addicted to diet coke many years ago. I think I went from the diet coke to the coffees. It's nice to not be dependent on them.
I’m increasing my coffee consumption, nothing can replace coffee. The deep caramel smell, the velvety smooth milk swirling into a deep brown garnet turning it to lighter tigers eye. The aroma lifting from the steam, into your lungs, kissing them to life. Fuck the meditation girl you’re kidding yourself!!! 😂
There are actually blood and urine tests available for neurotransmitters. I had a test called Dutch Complete, a pretty popular test that measures level s of hormones and some neurotransmitters recently...through dried urine samples. I've had others done in the past too.
I quit coffee few months ago to quit smoking and the dream phenomenon is true. From no dreaming since a child to remembering dreams vividly and now mostly look forward to sleep because of it.
That is great to hear! I think last night was one of the first times I had a dream that I didn't vividly remember this morning. :) Other than this morning, O almost always remember the dreams so clearly. I love it too!
@@walkaza6434 Actually I am a licensed functional medicine practitioner, as well as a graduate with a masters in nutrition. So as based on my field of work I an recommend certain supplements.
I was a heavy coffee drinker for 14 years and abused it as we had it on tap at work. Stopping it cold turkey was horrendous and the headaches and fatigue lasted three weeks. It has been three months since quitting and the acid reflux and morning coughing that I have had for years disappeared very quickly. Quality of sleep has improved and I dream deeply every night. Sleep in general is not perfect but has improved. Also I'm off blood pressure medication and now its typically in the normal to high normal ranges. There are other contributing factors though as I eat an animal based diet but do eat a small amount of carbs still in my last meal. Typically a few small potatoes /mash or a few carrots with a steak. Each time I go 100% carnivore it destroys my sleep either by waking up 4.30-5AM wide awake or 2 hours after falling asleep. Adding in a small amount of carbs in one of the meals prevents this from happening. Anyway I did find it very odd in not drinking coffee in the mornings for the first several weeks. It felt like something is missing but I replaced it with bacon and eggs.
Great job getting off the coffee! I too used to have the morning coughing! I just thought it was normal, but apparently it's not. That's great to hear about you getting off of the blood pressure meds too. Amazing! I too eat some things besides just meat, otherwise I tend to have blood sugar and sleep issues too. That's good to know the small addition of carbs has fixed that for you. I like your replacement for the coffee. Just eat.
I've always been a fan of green tea for potential health benefits. I haven't done any research on Matcha but I know people love it. I think it's a good idea to try to get organic versions of those when possible. I don't think they're bad and the caffeine amount is lower than coffee, which is great. For me though, I am still going to stay away from all caffeine because I don't want to be dependent on it again.

Thank you!
@@LifeDIY I don’t take it every night so my system does not get used to it. I take it only a few nights a week.
How is it that you glow?
Just for general public: you do not have to suffer so much. Just gradually reduce the dosage of caffeine until it comes to zero. I have quit caffeine 4 times: twice cold-turkey and twice the gradual way. Gradual way also takes 1-2 weeks, just without horrible headaches and all the suffering. Every time started using it again because of some major stress. Going to quit again, by all means gradually🤷♀️
Excellent advice! Thank you. :)
@@LifeDIY good
I've managed to quit for several months a few times. (Almost 4 weeks in currently.) I have found that focus improves at maybe 3-4 months.
@@BookClubDisaster Awesome! Thanks for sharing this.
I quit coffee 2 years ago and then I started drinking decaf, which have a small amount of caffeine, I just like the smell of coffee in the morning
The best is when you dont drink coofe more..is to drink fresh juice..the best and only way..😊
Is there a problem with using caffeine as needed? Do you think that would put you right back into daily coffee?
@@LifeDIY My sister is the same way. She slowly added some things back, but like you she is primarily carnivore.

I started drinking some coke almost everyday after a month or so. I think it’s pretty addictive
Yeah that's tough. I used to be addicted to diet coke many years ago. I think I went from the diet coke to the coffees. It's nice to not be dependent on them.
I’m increasing my coffee consumption, nothing can replace coffee.

Neurotransmitter levels aren’t testable. What are they actually doing? Cortisol is not a neurotransmitter.

Just eat.
What us your views on green tea and matcha?
I've always been a fan of green tea for potential health benefits. I haven't done any research on Matcha but I know people love it. I think it's a good idea to try to get organic versions of those when possible. I don't think they're bad and the caffeine amount is lower than coffee, which is great. For me though, I am still going to stay away from all caffeine because I don't want to be dependent on it again.
