yeah but just because it is established does it make it good? jinx is a character that represents trauma and mental illness in a rather negative way. if I suffered from schizophrenia and would watch her I would feel offended cause all the girl causes is misery.

@@jukori Less negative, more realistic when you consider how far her worst traits were egged on by her situation, mental illness and trauma isn't always pretty and Jinx's descent shows you this in a pretty empathetic way; all the girl wanted was to be loved.

@@jukori look, my best friend has schizophrenia and she loved the way they portrayed Jinx. It wasn’t the classic stereotype of a crazy person that babbles no sense, it’s a girl whose circumstances were really unfortunate, mixing trauma with untreated pre existent mental illnesses. And as a psychology student, the show depicted mental illnesses and the way different characters react to the events of their life realistically. Life isn’t always kind and with Jinx it has been brutal.

When I saw that the only thing I could think of was, the person wanted unnecessary exposition, like how Zaun was created, the laws and rules of magic, the science the timelines, as a none LoL fan those things aren't explained and it can cause some problems, well... It leaves one with mostly curious questions, but at the same time, the first 3 episodes focuses on what we need to know what's going on. There was no need to go that deep because this is a character driven story, it really wasn't about world building and lore and while I also had these questions, by episode 4 you start to realize that those things are irrelevant, this about Vi and Powder, if you wanna know how they do what they do, check the websites

That’s not even what they’re talking about. There’s no backstory to the power structure, past wars, the parents never get any screen time at all, magic gets no backstory. All we get is shallow backstories to mostly shallow characters, besides jinx.

@@genera1013 not really. I want 3 main things with world building.
      1: Consistency
This is mainly to do with the undercity. Such as when the enforcers walk in wearing gas masks (which I absolutely love) showing a deep rooted disgust for even the air they breathe without saying a single thing, and they take it off too, showing it’s not necessary, or part of a uniform, it’s because the air is so thick it’s terrible for those who haven’t been down there yet. That was an amazing scene, and I loved the deep rooted show of corruption, especially through Grayson (was really upset her character got killed off quick, she would’ve been good to have throughout story to contrast Marcus. Blackmail compared to bribery.
However, after all this building of how much they hate the undercity, most of it just gets forgotten and barely talked about. And the only thing we get is a few “I hate the undercity” “I’m from the undercity” interactions between characters (Caitlyn and Vi, Jayce and Viktor). Feels wasted.
      2: Subtlety
Most of the rest of the show just follows everyone saying they hate the undercity. It’s just annoying and we don’t really get any more moments that are as good as the gas masks.
      3: Reasoning
I want to see the reasons that they just leave the undercity to dwell. Is it because it supports an economy? Is it because it’s where they can send slightly dangerous people? Because it’s very clear they could wipe them all out. Also, why do they hate the undercity so much. Nobody at all pities them, unlike in a real society. A lot of things are thrown into the story and we have to accept them without being given reasons why, be it through explanation or clever exposition, we just don’t get the reasons at all.
As a side note, the whole magic thing annoys me because you have to know more about league of legends lore. I would much prefer if they did just a 1 minute animation, showing war, brutality, death etc, all because of the magic, or explained why it came about, or who has it, or where those people are, or how piltover even knows about it because there’s seemingly no one with magic there. Also, why are they trying to harness unstable magic when they can focus on technological advancements. The problem is, they create too many things to be explored with not enough runtime. Some parts of the ex series should never have been explored, mainly the politics. Keep it central to the main characters, where you only see updates through vague speeches, and these magic weapons and tools are mysterious. That’s about all really. I don’t want it spoonfed, but I would even accept that. Some explanation is better than none in this case.

      "World building"
      *looks at the Runeterra universe*
"Eh, good luck reading all that"
That would take ages to even talk about! This show was so far basically 70% of the backstory of the single most smallest region (literally a single city) of all of Runeterra! Just trying to explain anything else than maybe Ixtal would take probably twice as long in story telling. Now I do agree with the reviewer that we learn little to nothing about Runeterra outside of Piltover and Zaun, but that's the god damn point! If they were to make a show about all of Runeterra, that would be a One Piece type of show (in length, not in story). Considering the lore also changes every so often with new champions and updated ones, you can't generalize anything for any place in Runeterra.

I just got a co-worker to watch the show, and by episode 7 he said he loved the art, but for being something of a cartoon, he prefers cartoons to have more over the top action scenes, (but agrees some of the realism in the fights is so good that it's fine anyways) but he likes the fighting. And says the expressions and animation is the best he's seen a while, and can't believe a video game got the first decent show, and he has no context for League of Legends, never played.
Then he comes in to work, tells me he finished the last episodes and says the show is shit. The only thing he knew, apparently, of LoL, is Jinx is basically Joker and Harley Quinn as one person, and expected way more people to die by the end, and the fact "she didn't kill Caitlynn" is dumb, and she's not even different in the end, she's still powder/jinx, theres no reason why she didn't kill everyone there if she was actually full crazy now.
Then started making jokes "I'm guessing nobody died because they're in the game, and if I knew that, I wouldn't expect them to die, but not killing them because they have to live to be characters is dumb. The missile at the end is stupid now because if I know any of them are characters they don't die. Ha ha. I wonder who all gets to live through that somehow."
So the whole show was ruined for him because he expected a mass murder spree as a finale, and then realised that because its based on a video game, that a bunch of people that in his eyes should die, will magically live to because they have to be characters. And because of this conflict of expectation and knowledge, he had no emotional investment in any of the final scenes, or the people in them, and was left disappointed and uninterested in another season.
He tried to talk to me about the show after that but I just didn't have it in me. Nothing I wanted to gush or be excited about would resonate with him and he'd only put it down as dumb so it just sucked all the energy out of it for me.
I've never seen somebody ruin something for themselves so hard before.

This show is NOT overrated. Criticism is well received, I know the unique art style doesn't do it for many people, and perhaps a serious and dense show like Arcane isn't for some others (myself included, I much prefer comedies), but rarely I have seen anything as well done as Arcane.

@@elsotanodelhorror810 It only feels overrated because shows like this havent existed for quite some time and those that do dont usually stand out for its unique setting. Same with Attack On Titan. Intruige shouldnt overpower how you view a show. You may have the concept of "Demon Slayer" to be more interesting and intruiging to you but that shouldnt overpower how you view another shows' qualities. People outcry for that shows likeness because it really is that good it just doesnt fall under your qualities of interest thus leading to giving any benefit of the doubt. Attack On Titan is listed number 1 for a reason and Arcane got 9 annie awards on its release for a reason (breaking a record. They just ARE that good and personal taste shouldnt overshadow that. And even if thats not the main argument there are closer depictions of symbolism. The creators were indeed passionate about this project and it shows (Hence why they didnt higher famous actors and studio that didnt work on any league related content prior avoiding a Lion King 2 remake fiasco and why the project did so well as it did) There is literally a youtube shorts channel that goes over why arcane is so great if you want to go that far. I honestly think it's more of an attempt to be 'different' than actually enjoying a legitimately well written show, where the story is masterfully told through the arcs this diverse cast of characters all undergo.

@@someoneawesome8717 I mean........ MOBAs aren't RPG's, apart from voicelines you're not going to get much lore out of just playing the game, and that has never been the point of it. That they have such deep lore for the characters is literally just a bonus, seeing as what league is derived from (original dota) either had little to no background or lots because they were characters with backstory to begin with, in frozen throne. Blizzards games reuses the characters from WoW which as you know is an RPG.
It's pretty much unheard of that a game that isn't reliant on a story for gameplay still has this much lore to read up on, and outside of little character concepts, it didn't really seem like they were planning on making the world so vast in early stages. They've rewritten lore over the years as they realised this is something they wanted to focus on. Putting effort into making new characters appealing, making them have special interactions and such. With that said, the game is STILL not storybased, never was, and a huge chunk of the players didn't know much of the lore until Arcane. It's just always been a fun thing to delve into for the nerdier part of the fanbase.
Expecting a MOBA to put in more story than LoL has into the actual gameplay is absolutely ridiculous. Instead, they'll have to make other games to tell these stories, WHICH THEY ARE ALREADY DOING, with Blade of the ruined king, for example. Not to mention the literal 3 and a half hours of cinematics they've released, that focus more and more on story with each. Cheesus.

i thought the world-building was fantastic, especially since it's from an already existing game. i've never played LoL, don't know anything about it, but i was still engrossed in the show and understood things perfectly fine. i like how the directors didn't assume that everyone already knew who the characters were, what was happening, etc. etc. it felt real and fleshed out, and it's obvious that a lot of care was put into making the show consumable and enjoyable for _everyone,_ rather than just LoL fans.

She has really low self esteem along with being cursed to turn everything she touches to dirt but despite that she still tries to over come it and help her family and it was mostly because she had immense trust in her sister who provided her with support and a safe space to go back to every time she failed.
All of that coming crumbling down and blowing up when she lost her last lifeline really hit home. I think a lot of people can empathize with her desperate and possibly virtuous struggle to overcome all of the terrible things that life has dealt to her and how easy it is to (as she did) fall apart and descend into chaos after losing the one thing that supported her in her fight. But this story also shows the consequences of giving in and allowing yourself to descend into chaos. It shows that if you give in, not only will things you touch merely turn into dirt but you will turn the environment around you into hell, dragging everything you once believed in down with you while simultaneously evaporating any possibility for heaven to shine through.

Arcane is an example of masterful writing. They delivered an amazing story rich in plot, set in a diverse world while displaying a range of complex characters and personalities. It's flexible and ambiguous enough to not force the viewer into thinking one way or another about anything at all. They don't tell us who to like or to hate, who is "good" or who isn't. Arcane beautifully presented us with a believable world and society with struggles that match our own day to day lives. I hope another season gets greenlight.

Having many storylines isn't a problem, but what is a problem is having storylines that run past each other and don't connect and impact each other. Arcane did that generally pretty well, except for Victor who isn't very much involved with Piltover's struggle and is focusing rather on himself.

@@tarmairon431 Are you sure Viktor is selfish on this one? He gave Jayce lots of chances to make the Hextech work, hell he participates to improve the system and invent something that could be a cure for his people in Zaun. Piltover doesn't have much problems excepting the fact that they have to deal with Zaunites rebelling against them. There are political issues, because Heimerdinger didn't care about Zaun until he has been given retirement. Jayce and Viktor have the rights to rebel against his arrogance because he's not thinking wisely enough, and everyone is in danger because of how protective and ignorant he is. Meanwhile Viktor on the other hand is willing to risk everything to get something out from the hexcore. Heck, he even told Jayce to destroy the hexcore after he got traumatized for accidentally bringing his assistant up to his secret act of improving his body parts with shimmer and the power of Hexcore. How can you tell that's a selfish act if he's willing to do anything to try and help everyone who is struggling in life just like him? Even for his people? Have you even watched the full show or rewatch some scenes after you did?
Piltover isn't struggling much because they're being greedy on the imports and use Hextech as some kind of device for improving the money-makings. If you listen to the councilors bit of mockery after Jayce told them to shut down the Hexgates, you can see how they only see the lack of imports could be a problem to them. They're already so fucking rich that they could have enough supplies and such to help the people from the Undercity.
And bruh, you should have read Viktor's stories, he even helped a kid from getting bullied, he's trying to help people. He's getting weak throughout the season. Yet Mel only saw Viktor as.. nothing special nor important, but only to Jayce. Which is toxic and arrogant of a councilor she can be-- There goes my Mel-hate side.
Heimerdinger didn't get much any concerns about Viktor dying. But the lame excuse of seeing his students died years after years is pretty much bullshit for him to not care for his assistant who literally helped Jayce to create the Hextech and the Hexgates. Which is one of the most revolutionary thing they have done, and Heimerdinger treated Viktor as just a mere human being with smarts who can just die anytime. Yet he didn't help Viktor nor even try to.
The only character who have gotten the impact from Viktor's condition is just Jayce, the rest doesn't know nor even shown any much concerns. Mel? Mel only felt bad for Jayce, but never for Viktor, which is why I'm bitter at this bitch who literally manipulated him for the investments. Jayce is literally the only person who worries about Viktor's sickness, and Heimerdinger didn't even came to the hospital which is fucked up for the man.... This season ended settling how different he is from Jayce, while still mantaining their friendship. But that friendship will not be forever.

My immediate thoughts were, “This is kinda boring.” It didn’t immediately resonate with me because the first few seconds just weren’t enough to capture my attention.
I was about to stop it and probably rewatch it another time but I told myself to, “Just wait.” And I did, and now I don’t know what to say except point out that those people are truly missing out or that they are just too full of themselves to ever notice literally everything that speaks traumatic in this story.
People who say it sucks, are the very people who brush off a hellish trauma x1000 like it isn’t worth their time.

My dad suggested watching it and I was like "meh. League of Legends? Meh. I'm sure this show isn't gonna be super great." Then we watched the first two and I was hooked. I was so involved and intrigued by ALL of the characters. The art style reminded me of Dishonored and so I loved it. Then the music? Don't get me started. The voice acting was just stunning too. Vi calls Caitlyn a cupcake. I have an irrational hatred of the word “cup.”
It’s just an unappealing sounding word to me, it has a harsh start with ‘C’, a ‘U’ that promises a nice tongue rolling which is then undercut by an abrupt ending with ‘P’ (“Cake” also borders in this same territory for me, but it’s saved by the connotations of sweet sponge and marzipan).
But it’s not just the word itself, it’s Vi insistence on using it as a pet name for Caitlyn, trying to convince me that it’s pleasant word and just pushing and preaching this cupcake agenda. It irritates me and nearly ruins an amazing romance.

The explosions I did find to be jarring as they didn't actually match the rest of the style. Everything else had depth and an almost oil painting feel to it, but the explosions often (not always, but the majority of them) looked flat and without any of the same texture or detail, as if added on as an afterthought.

Arcane is the best show i ever watched. Even the less good episodes delivered so much. Every line of dialogue was used to tell something about the Characters. Every time something happened you could READ it on the Faces of the Characters. Which is bloody amazing on its own, for a frickin Cartoon.
Arcane is ART! Its an example of what animated Story Telling is capable of!

I am so tired of when people complain about "woke plot" because we all know they are talking about Vi and Caitlyn and the acknowledgement that gay people exist. It's weird when all the characters are cis, straight, and white because that's not reality. I exist. I am gay. So I guess anyone who has ever interacted with me now has a "woke plotline". Rich folk who understand that the relationship between topside and undercity is an analogy for what we see in the modern world, between the working class and the elite, and between the global north and south. They know the show is right, and are deeply uncomfortable with what that means for them, in the real world.

It’s not hard to keep up with. Piltover is the topside with technology and sliiiight elitism problems over Zaun, it’s little brother that’s essentially just a crime lord city. There’s also Mel’s ties to Noxus but it’s hardly mentioned and frankly irrelevant to the plot. It just gives Jayce a reason to go on a mission down in Zaun with Vi and build his character into the pacifist he was meant to be. Not knowing some of the characters is totally fine if you haven’t played the games. They work them into the story and introduce by character. Breaking the fourth wall or giving an introduction would just be cliché. Why do you think the first scene of episode 1 was so impactful?

I feel like these reviews tell us more about the reviewers own observation abilities and intelligence than the show itself, like i have played league before, a long time ago, i was familiar with jinx and i probably saw vi from time to time, but i was oblivious to the lore , the world of Runterra and any cities or clans within it, but arcane gives you everything you need to understand the classism struggle between top an bottom, and how the environments of these two opposing sides effect the characters in and around them; you shouldn't need to have how or why everything exists spoon fed to you like a baby, we know it IS a fantasy world that's pretty obvious by the many non human characters, Yordles like Heimerdinger, the magic, and overall aesthetic of the world
the world building is mostly through visual show don't tell and i believe that's a GOOD thing
I honestly believe going into this show without any knowledge of lol, could be an even better experience, as jinx would be so much more of an unexpected twist to those who never knew her character prior to her reveal in arcane, if anything being very familiar with the games only really spoils things such as jinx, Viktor's eventual evolution, and Vi and Caits eventual partnership as they all know where these characters eventually end up as champions, also avid players would easily be able to decipher the champions from the side characters making certain deaths less impactful so ultimately any review saying the show is only good if you love the game are sorely mistaken; is lol a shit game? yes i can agree with that 100%, i have no attachment to that game but, Arcane is ground-breaking in comparison to the game which it was "adapted"
and i really need to know wtf makes something WOKE to these people WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN how is that a valid criticism explain yourselves please people
do they see a black women in power and piss their pants? they see two girls flirting an suddenly they're dying ??? what is the WOKE that hurts you so
and in regard to the simply "not knowing wtf was going on" or what the point was of the story , yes season one leaves things unresolved but how i see it that is basically the whole point, this is only the first season and to me it was pretty clear although there where many threads in the story, season one is the story of Jinx, how she became the loose canon you see in the games and how she came to accept and embrace her new identity, that is what the whole mad hatter tea party finale culminated to and jinxes final act before the season ends becoming a catalyst for more conflict next season honestly i feel Arcane accomplished a lot more in 9 episodes than other shows do in a whole 20+ episode season

    • @lachlanhudson7404

I saw a lot of people argue that Arcane lacks what other pilot seasons did well. (At least one arc of multiple plots that ended and give a hint as to what the next season would include) I think your point makes a lot of sense. The main focus of the first season was the idea of who will she end up claiming for herself, Powder or Jinx? We took the entire season to develop her character, give her people, culture, events, and actions to interact with, and then conclude the season with her having the confidence, independence, and ability to choose for herself who she will be in the future. It then immediately shows her exemplifying who she will be by "jinxing" peace and giving us a pretty good idea that we are going to go into a civil war next season as well as see some outside forces (Medarda's enemies in Noxus interfering) involve themselves. Arcane does it all for "just a cartoon pilot season."
