GREEN MOONG BEAN CURRY | Moong Tadka Recipe (HEALTHY & DELICIOUS)

    This green moong bean curry is healthy and nutritious. I added chana dal to it to get that creaminess and also added pinto beans for that added flavor.
    Ingredients Required For Making Moong Bean Tadka - Serves 7 to 8
    For cooking the dal -
    * 1 cup/ 250 gm/ 9oz whole green moong beans
    * 1/3 rd cup/ 80 gm/3 oz chana dal(Bengal gram dal/ split desi chickpeas)
    * 1/4 th cup/ 50 gm/ 2 oz pinto beans/ red kidney beans
    * 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    * 1 teaspoon salt
    * 3 cups hot water
    * 1 teaspoon oil
    For the rest of the recipe -
    * 1 large/200 gm onion
    * 5 large cloves/ 25 gm garlic
    * 25 gm ginger/ 1 inch length ginger
    * 25 gm / 2 large tomatoes
    * 2 chopped green chilies (optional)
    * 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
    * 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi powder)
    * 1 teaspoon kashmiri red chilli powder (please adjust proportion according to your tolerance level of chilli heat)
    * 2 teaspoons ground coriander (dhania powder)
    * 1 teaspoon ground cumin (jeera powder)
    * 1 teaspoon garam masala powder (Home made Garam Masala - • 3 MUST HAVE HOMEMADE I... )
    * 1 teaspoon kasoori methi(dried fenugreek leaves)
    * 2 teaspoons salt or as per taste
    * 2 tablespoons oil
    * 1 cup of hot water
    * chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)
    For the tadka -
    * 1 teaspoon oil
    * 1 tablespoon butter/ghee (please do not add oil if using ghee)
    * 1 large garlic thinly sliced
    * 1/4 th teaspoon kashmiri red chilli powder
    * 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)
    ** Points To Note -
    * You can leave out chana dal and pinto beans and make it with just whole green moong beans. You can also use yellow split peas in place of chana dal.
    * Adjust the consistency by adding more or less water. It thickens up more as it cools down
    * You can leave out butter/ghee and use only oil while making tadka
    * You can freeze this
    Serve this with rice/roti/paratha/poori

    Just made it this morning and turned out delicious! I omitted the (hot) green chili. Instead, added to the pressure cooker a whole green pepper (deseeded) with a large shallot inside it. Blended these and added them to the beans. At the end I added a few pieces of pumpkin, which I boiled separately. Thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻, Bumbi, for another great recipe. The pinto beans made the dish so special!

    I love bean curries, especially mung beans, I think they are very underappreciated here in the UK. I think people are nervous about beans but prepared by soaking and changing the water as you show prevents any digestive problems that they have a reputation for, and dried beans are very cheap these days and can have some lovely flavour and texture. I'm going to try this recipe out at the earliest opportunity!

      Ian Rolfe said everything I wanted to say but I'm still worried about how to serve. You mentioned toast with the derivative version with egg. Original in a bowl with flat bread perhaps? It seems too small textured for rice? Help, Bumbi!

    This turned out very nicely! The only substitution I made was to use 1/4 cup of home grown soldier beans (dry white beans) instead of the pinto. I will try the leftovers with an egg. Thank you for teaching us these beautiful, healthy and satisfying recipes.

    I cooked this dish yesterday and it turned out delicious. Thank you I now have another staple dish to enjoy . I shared some with my neighbor whose from Romania and she said it was perfect and gave some to her 15 month baby who ate it 😊

      You can make a delicious salad with soaked/sprouted mung beans , sprouted black chana finely chopped cucumbers,onions and green chillies and add loads of lime juice . The trick is to rub the lime juice in the lentils. It tastes just out if this world .

    Hope you've had a great day Bumbi. Wow this recipe is amazing ⭐I just knew we would love it. (recipe 126) I substituted roasted, skinned and deseeded red bell pepper for the tomato and it worked amazingly well. I really wanted to make this recipe and just cannot eat tomatoes of any kind at the moment. Even the smallest amount. It went perfectly with your Masala Coated Fried Okra & Potatoes, Soft Roti, basmati rice and salad. The meal had a real restaurant taste to it. Absolutely delicious thank you 😋 Have a great weekend.     Quite the calmest, humblest, most authentic food presentation I’ve yet seen on a UA-cam cooking channel Not even a whiff of Vitamin Me. Perfect. I made this yesterday having found we had every ingredient in the cupboard. What joy. Turned out to be one of the most delicious curries I’ve tasted. I love the way Bumbi explains how you build flavour as you go. I followed her instructions faithfully (except the part where you don’t nearly slice the top of your pinkie off when chopping ginger!😢) Just one tiny typo spotted in the recipe - two large tomatoes weigh far more than 25g, but I can forgive Bumbi anything and I’ve hit the subscribe button.

    Just made this recipe. Followed it to the tee. However, I didnt have chana dal and pinto beans and used yellow split peas and butter beans instead.

    Very nice job. I like the fact that you use purple onion in most of your recipes because it's more sweet and that you cook them off instead of adding them fresh at the end which would give a bad consistency. Also, pretty puppy.

    Hi. I must say you have a lovely voice. I love it. MashaAllah.
    You are the first person who gives time for the pressure cooker otherwise most everyone says 3 whistles or 5 whistles. I have a pressure cooker which has no whistles it goes chuchu or something like that. I’m then at a loss as to how long. So Thankyou for that.
