TLDR: original was a great scene, never replicated I was pretty disappointed when i played reload and saw this, watching the original again after reload the first thing i noticed was how the sound design in the original was goddamn nuts, it's got such a bold dynamic range of volume, from the abrasive to silence it isn't afraid to make itself known. the shot composition was all quick cuts and super closeups with an uncanny tilt to the shots before awakening, they were hard leveraging the fact that P3 was not a household thing and before this point a good amount of players wouldn't know how a persona is summoned in this game so there is a real respect for that tension whereas portable and reload seem to either assume prior knowledge and don't keep you guessing till the last second like in the original, they lack that confidence of this original. i would be remiss not to mention the music as well, i dont't mind the new unavoidable battle but the original is so much more this scene, it's so much more raw and the track preceding it is far more responsive to the action of the scene, its absence is really felt in reload and yeah, i'm not even gonna talk about portable (Master of shadows havin' ass). Other incredible bits: use of bold colour behind thanatos (red), white for both the shadow and pharos, it focuses the action so clearly and adds real punch especially with the wonderful reverse shot of the shadow being cut in two to a stark red background and accompanying mirrored sound effect. before the awakening the shots lack cohesion, so confusing and scattered but once the protagonists has his persona the action is directed with far more directionality, each shot and movement within flows into the next, even in the sound, i mentioned how the mirrored slice sfx helped make a shot/reverse shot on block colour effortlessly readable but the continuity of orpheus' roar coming through the command room monitors compressed immediately lets us know that they can see what we do without the need for establishment, it all makes the viewer feel a lot more in control and comfortable, this is completely lost in reload where everything is really static and uninteresting. Lastly is the Evangelion in the room, yup i can't help drawing comparisons between the stylings of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the whole of Persona 3's presentation, from ikustki in the command room with his opaque reflected glasses as a gendo type figure, the hard shading and eye closeups, use of painful sounds and pitches for effect, the monthly shadows coming at regular intervals like the angels where it turns out at the end that the final great obstacle was a variant of humanity itself or it's desire (for death or to escape it). the most telling here was the barely controlled beast that is the protagonist's protector. and yeah, that's not in vogue anymore as it was when p3 was released, even EVA has changed but regardless, they must have known how impactful this scene has been on the tone of the game and getting it right is imperative for a game trying to recreate that atmosphere. I do not think p3 re is trying to do that (at least so far), its brighter, nicer, SEES become actual friends far quicker than in the original where they only really start becoming real friends later on and the whole thing feels a little more like an isolating experience, (can only control the protagonist) i don't think persona 3 reload has to be just like the original, i'm enjoying the game a lot but it hasn't replaced the original as i thought it might, and now im glad that it doesn't (as long as you have an emulator or ps2/3)
i really loved how in the original the background turns white while a ringing sound plays, reflecting the state of mind of the protagonist before using the evoker.
@@ivegonesickomode1610nah not really. in terms of graphics though, p3r is clearly better. but i feel the direction of the original cutscene was better.
Lmao, if you're deaf maybe. Sounds horrendous, completely muted and subdued compared to the original. Granted that's not the only reason this scene sucks, the lack of the heartbeat and slow pointing of the evoker to build tension whilst the original spliced inbetween various scenes the MC has seen, the poor cinematography, the lack of oomph in the sound effect when the evoker goes off, the pacing is awful. Makoto takes more time to breath and become resolute before he fires it, along with the drop of sweat indicating how afraid he is. Here it's way too quick. I'm not even going to comment on how bad Thanatos wretches himself from Orpheous, it's not feral or animalistic it how he rips free like the original, it's literally just he puts his arms up he inflates a bit and blows up, doesn't exactly portray it like he's ripping himself free. Honestly the anime movies did it worse than the original but it's still better than this. This remake is a joke, lmao.

Man wheres the blood like the scene is done well enough and all but so many of the little details are missing because its an ingame engine render. The blood pools on the ground, the black ooze dripping from thanatos as it tears the shadow apart and that awesome zoom in on its face at the end
Missing the anime cutscene honestly, P4 and P5 had their awakening in anime, don't know why go back and doing it in-engine, Thanatos bursting out of Orpheus lost all the impact. Also anime cutscenes age better than in-game engine, the original P3 awakening still looks good to this day.
So I want to say this for all the overly nostalgic people who I have been seeing insulting others for enjoying this game to literally knock it off. You are embarrassing yourself and being disrespectful towards others over a measly game. Those who said that this scene is rubbish saying it looks sloppy are clearly overly biased based on nostalgia. A game that came out 17 years ago can’t look better than a game that came out now. Technology has evolved over the years and this includes both 2D and 3D cutscenes. If persona 3’s old anime cutscene was redone now it still wouldn’t give the same eerie and dark vibe the original had. What made the old one so eerie was the fact that its art style was old. This doesn’t just apply to games. I was once watching an anime and that show came out in 1996. They decided to do a remake of a very popular episode from the beginning of the series. Even though it was exactly the same, its haunting vibe was gone. I realized it was because as time went on the art style became really smooth and better looking and so it lost that old time feel.
I agree people shouldn't be insulting people but man your take here is insane. Yes, in fact 17 year old animation can look better than game engine generated graphics(like here). That's like saying CGI is always better than hand drawn animation because "its technology". Now with all that said they can definitely create ambience similar to the older game if they wanted to. If you played through the game their are many scenes they animated that looked quite good and carried the same sort of style(end boss sequence events come to mind). Their are a multitude of stylistic choices here they chose to change. The art direction here was just not intended to give off the same creepy vibe, and frankly the animation here looked much less polished. And if your ok with that then fine. But claiming it just cant be done or people are looking at it through nostalgia lenses is extremely disingenuous.
You hear a lot of people complaining that it doesn't quite hit the mood or that it doesn't match the original since it's 3d but really the reason why they did all that including the anime scene was because they didn't have the technology to show what they wanted to so tried with a 2d animation. Now that they don't have as much limitations this looks absolutely amazing and probably even what they originally imagined.
It’s kind of not what they had imagined, at all. Don’t get me wrong, the Reload scene looks super cool and had me hooked. The problem is that the tone is completely opposite of what the original was going for. Those few seconds where you’re left wondering whether or not you’re going to pull the trigger and the silence of it all puts a level of tension unseen in P4 and P5. The P3R scene doesn’t do that and instead leads into the cool factor of summoning, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it destroys the tension behind using the evoker (which at this point is just a gun to the audience)
I don't think it's terrible, as far as in engine goes I thought it was astronomically better than P3P. I just wish it had been animated. I remember hoping they'd animate, if literally *nothing* else, THIS scene in particular. I guess they didn't. Here's hoping they do for the eventual Royal edition💀
It looks cool in 3d, but the manifestation of Thanatos feels off like a few others have pointed out it feels really stiff. Everything else is fluid, but the persona's are what feel too stiff.
Damn I was on the "persona 3 doesn't need a remake" boat but honestly just beat the High Priestess and I absolutely love how they handled this remake. Might end up being my favorite persona game honestly. They went for a bunch of small changes that add up really well
I get ATLUS wants to flex their higher quality animations (and they are indeed better than FES and definitely portable), but they completely missed the mark with Thanatos bursting out of Orpheus. In the original Thanatos was tearing himself out of Orpheus violently, and when he succeded Orpheus' body ended up shattering as his pieces went flying, his head was seen falling and the sound design fit a metal body getting wrecked, the scene even lingered on his body twitching as Thanatos did so giving you time to process what is happening. Here Orpheus' body seems like a rubber balloon, his head was pulled down into his body much slower than the original animation giving the idea that Thanatos isn't as forceful, yet his body burst out far quicker afterwards giving you little time to comprehend that something was violently tearing itself out, not to mention that a more liquidy burst sfx was used when Thanatos appeared instead of the metallic sfx of the original. There is also no evidence of Orpheus having even been there after Thanatos bursted out aside from some red and black swirls.
Okay, I'm a player of the OG, and IMO, this was a slight upgrade compared to the original scene. My one complaint is that they axed that sick roar that Thanatos lets out after wasting the Magician shadow; besides that I think they nailed it
I still like the original awakening more. He's visibly more hesitant in the original before he pulls the trigger, and orpheus' transformation into thanatos is way more brutal. Also the sound design in this version feels kinda limp compared to the original. I can understand why original fans arent a fan of this scene, but I still think it goes hard regardless
This scene gets a lot of stuff wrong in my opinion. You get to miss the oppressive heartbeat, eerie silence, constant flashing of images before the eyes before the protagonist pulls the trigger, its supposed to be scary but this scene i felt absolutely nothing. Shame, i like the rest of this game otherwise
Is this my personal opinion that this scene is pretty mid it lacks a lot of the flare of the original, the intensity, and the brutality and certain artistic details were lost like camera angles and sweat drop I personally find the original was a lot better it's way more impactful, anders there's a lot more punch to it. That scene really sets the mood it has an awesome buildup ,one that really keeps you on the edge. But this one loses a lot of that, and the atmosphere just feels off compared to the original 2D animation. So far, this is the only thing I don't like about reloading everything else has been pretty good.
You know, people may be praising the original scene a lot here, but I own a copy of FES on the PS2 that I played way before reload came out. It's pretty telling that I don't even remember a single bit of this cutscene from FES, it didn't stick with me. Wanna know why? I started playing this franchise as an adult. But wanna know what else? I enjoyed THIS specific version of the cutscene enough to look it up on youtube way after I was done with this game, and there's something to be said about that
I have one issue with this scene, namely Thanatos. The way he bursts out of Orpheus looked weird, like a balloon got popped. The animations for Thanatos felt stiff and sloppily done for the most part and really ruined an otherwise great cutscene for me personally
old dub is unmatched they should have brought at least some of the old crew back it just isn't the same thing also this moment felt way more epic in the ol version's dunno why
If you've played the original your opinion would likely be different. I like this version of the cutscene, but it doesn't hold a candle to the awakening in the original game. The whole vibe and tone are completely different. This just feels like a watered down version of the really well animated cutscene that still holds up to this day, and better fits the style Persona 3 aims to achieve. The original cutscene is just a lot more engaging and well done.
I feel like the original of this scene was better but this scene isn’t bad just poorly animated or more like this should have been an anime scene and not a 3D one
Man I love reload but this has nothing on the original cutscene. The PS2 animated cutscene literally gives me chills. They shouldn’t have made this cutscene in-engine
Actually, I'd say it's *fast* and clunky. Like, it feels as if these new devs just wanted to rush through this moment because they thought "Whatever, everyone's seen this before so let's just get it over with." The original had so much more tension and weight - like watching a horror and/or mystery movie. The MC pulling the trigger on himself had dramatic flashes, lingering shots of him dripping with sweat, and just conveyed the overall energy of this game well before they're introduced in the main narrative. You can *feel* the "Shadow of Death" in the moment. *This* just feels...so different.
Whoever the hell made the decision to cut that incredible, awesome anime cut scene deserves to be fired on the spot. This game is so flat, visually and even sound wise the mixing is poor. The artistic direction is just a mess. Persona 3 FES remaster remains the definitive version. I mean seriously. Why on Earth would you cut that particular cut scene? The anime awakening is a staple of the series now. I remember it was during that particular cut scene that I was like okay this game is special.
I'm also not a fan of this scene but it's not a big deal lmao, specially when there are many improvements in this remake compared to the original game. However, I can see the problem and sadly this is nothing new. The Resident Evil 4 remake also suffered from (arguably worse) stylistic changes, but it's still a good game.
@@jlr_0276 The collapse in art direction is a big deal to me, dude. It’s one of the series’ hallmark qualities. I’m not sure what improvements make up for that. This simply is not hitting for me and I sincerely hope it’s not a sign of things to come.
@@RoyKoopaling If we talk about art direction, well I dunno..it seems to be a problem with animated cutscenes overall, and this game doesn't have many. This has about the same level of quality as the average 3D cutscene from Persona 5, a game which has a completely different vibe so I get why this awakening doesn't work as well as the original, but outside of some cutscenes, the presentation is as good as any other Persona game.
Its sucks so bad in 3d animation. Like. It butchers the original in tone and impact. The origional had so much suspense and tension and this one it has zero impact. you know, reading comments like this really makes you realize how ungratefull this community really is.
It's good but I definitely felt like they could have gone Harder like in the Movie. Giving you a preview of how powerful the Thanatos Persona will be
TLDR: original was a great scene, never replicated
I was pretty disappointed when i played reload and saw this, watching the original again after reload the first thing i noticed was how the sound design in the original was goddamn nuts, it's got such a bold dynamic range of volume, from the abrasive to silence it isn't afraid to make itself known. the shot composition was all quick cuts and super closeups with an uncanny tilt to the shots before awakening, they were hard leveraging the fact that P3 was not a household thing and before this point a good amount of players wouldn't know how a persona is summoned in this game so there is a real respect for that tension whereas portable and reload seem to either assume prior knowledge and don't keep you guessing till the last second like in the original, they lack that confidence of this original. i would be remiss not to mention the music as well, i dont't mind the new unavoidable battle but the original is so much more this scene, it's so much more raw and the track preceding it is far more responsive to the action of the scene, its absence is really felt in reload and yeah, i'm not even gonna talk about portable (Master of shadows havin' ass).
Nostalgia is one hell of a drug isnt it?
@@ivegonesickomode1610nah not really. in terms of graphics though, p3r is clearly better. but i feel the direction of the original cutscene was better.
@@k_otey So basically, you’re just a nostalgia baby and not actually an expert on anything, right?
Not reading all this. You’re a 30 year old persona fan. You know persona isn’t meant for your age, right?
Never played the original. All i know is homie wanted that smoke and pulled the trigger and it was insane.
Just past this part and i am having a blast
The music Unavoidable Battle sounds just as good as it did back then.
@@DahpieEveyrthing you said is right. The whole scene completely lacks any artistic direction. It’s a disaster. I don’t know what they were thinking with this. Such an important scene and they didn’t even try.

It definitely is a bit higher quality but damn over a decade for this...?
A bit? It slaps the old game in quality
I WANT TO SEE MY LITTLE BOY, I WANT TO SEE MY LITTLE BOY (HERE HE COMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Does anyone else miss Orpheus’ blood curdling scream though?
I am thou thou art I
From the sea of thy soul, I cometh
I am Orpheus, Master of Strings
I love how everyone compare it to the original while this is just the Movie Version Reanimated in CGI and i fricking love it
Agree
You hear a lot of people complaining that it doesn't quite hit the mood or that it doesn't match the original since it's 3d but really the reason why they did all that including the anime scene was because they didn't have the technology to show what they wanted to so tried with a 2d animation.
Now that they don't have as much limitations this looks absolutely amazing and probably even what they originally imagined.
They had less limitations and managed to downgrade it somehow
It’s kind of not what they had imagined, at all. Don’t get me wrong, the Reload scene looks super cool and had me hooked. The problem is that the tone is completely opposite of what the original was going for. Those few seconds where you’re left wondering whether or not you’re going to pull the trigger and the silence of it all puts a level of tension unseen in P4 and P5. The P3R scene doesn’t do that and instead leads into the cool factor of summoning, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it destroys the tension behind using the evoker (which at this point is just a gun to the audience)
The problem isn't 3D, original can be easily recreated in 3D. The problem is just bad shots and sound design.
I accidentally skipped it so now I'm here
This looks great
That scream was crunchy as Alex’s would’ve said
I have only played persona 5 and persona 5 royal and P3R but the persona awakenings on both are just so bad ass
This long ahh comment just bc you’re saying the OG is better. Just say you’re a bitter 30 year old boomer and move on.
Original Thanatos: rrrrrooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrr
Reload: hrrrrr
Okay, I'm a player of the OG, and IMO, this was a slight upgrade compared to the original scene. My one complaint is that they axed that sick roar that Thanatos lets out after wasting the Magician shadow; besides that I think they nailed it
3:13 eva reference
what song is playing before awakening?
Persona Invocation
@@lovetofunga thanks man!
I'm always confused about Magician's design.
It's so gooooood
I don't care if the original ps2 is more edgy but it is cool and this game identity is all being about edgy back in 2006
How does one get this scene, is it at the beginning or near the end or middle?
at the very beginning
This scene gets a lot of stuff wrong in my opinion. You get to miss the oppressive heartbeat, eerie silence, constant flashing of images before the eyes before the protagonist pulls the trigger, its supposed to be scary but this scene i felt absolutely nothing. Shame, i like the rest of this game otherwise
WHAT IS THE OST CALLED AT THE BEGINNING?!?!?!
Мне очень нравится визуал в кат сценах персона 3 релоад
I love the visual improvements they have made, but one question, WHERE THE HELL DID HE PULL OUT THAT SWORD FROM?!?
What do you mean?
I enjoyed THIS specific version of the cutscene enough to look it up on youtube way after I was done with this game, and there's something to be said about that
The way thanatos rips out of orpheus is like weird
Out of power no impact etc
I have one issue with this scene, namely Thanatos.
The way he bursts out of Orpheus looked weird, like a balloon got popped. The animations for Thanatos felt stiff and sloppily done for the most part and really ruined an otherwise great cutscene for me personally
Respectable
Tbh this is better in 3d but i love the animated one just as much
old dub is unmatched they should have brought at least some of the old crew back it just isn't the same thing also this moment felt way more epic in the ol version's dunno why

I've always wondered this and hope somone has the answer why does the shadow ignore makoto and makes a b line for yukari
It doesn't hit the same way.
Everything is too clean.
what if makoto thought it was a real gun and just wanted to shoot himself😭😭😭
Wdym people don't like this?? The original had me LAUGHING because of how awkward it was. This actually looks cool.
@@Ethank78The problem is Thanatos' animations for me. Other than that, this looks WAY better than the original and is more beginner friendly.
The Original was so much better. They removed the tension and the sound effects in this one are really bad. But it looks pretty.
I feel like the original of this scene was better but this scene isn’t bad just poorly animated or more like this should have been an anime scene and not a 3D one

Why does his persona change from orpheus to thanatos, what significance does Thanatos play
Play the game and find out
Your death confidant is the reason
Im sorry but the original/fes PS2 version looked and had a better feel. This feels slow and clunky.
Actually, I'd say it's *fast* and clunky. Like, it feels as if these new devs just wanted to rush through this moment because they thought "Whatever, everyone's seen this before so let's just get it over with."
The original had so much more tension and weight - like watching a horror and/or mystery movie. The MC pulling the trigger on himself had dramatic flashes, lingering shots of him dripping with sweat, and just conveyed the overall energy of this game well before they're introduced in the main narrative.
You can *feel* the "Shadow of Death" in the moment. *This* just feels...so different.
This feels like a watered down persona 3 in my opinion
Could have been more bloody

@@RoyKoopalingcalm down bro it’s not that deep
@@RoyKoopaling If we talk about art direction, well I dunno..it seems to be a problem with animated cutscenes overall, and this game doesn't have many.
