  • This is the sixth video in our series of mango tasting videos. Subscribe to our channel to see more of our mango tasting and fruit tree grafting videos.
    Today, Valerie, Craig, and Celeste taste a Nam Doc Mai mango off of Valerie's NDM tree here at our farm. The tree was planted less than 2 years ago. We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm and from other local Florida farms.
    Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

      In add'n to Nam Doc Mai, have Po Pyu Kalay (Lemon Meringue), Pickering, Carrie, Alphonso, Cogshall, Southern Blush. 7 total. Most are young---Alphonso is the youngest (was tough to get here in Phx--finally found a 7 gal I planted several wks back) and is suffering a good bit, due to alltime record heat here in Phx now...already 8 straight days at 110 and above with several records at or close to 119 but they also don't get a break at night, as we are setting records at or just below 90 there as well) and I am still removing fruit, though left behind 4 nice Pickering this yr and 1 Carrie. I had well over 25 Lemon Meringue coming in (tied with Pickering as oldest tree at ~3 yrs) but stripped all, as I wanted tree to really set in. My mangos' are among my youngest trees, though my garden now is nearly 19 yrs in the making...see another response to you. I am out of space now (just under a 1/2 total acre) but would love to add something like a Sweet Tart or Kathy; maybe a Gary one day--want to taste them first...we may have a tasting here in July...

      Jeff - Great mango collection! Wow! We never have temps that high here. Amazing all you can grow there. Sweet Tart is one of our favorite mangos - though coconut cream has been our favorite so far this year. Haven't tried any sweet tarts this year. Nice you have tastings available there so you can get an idea of what you want to plant next.

    • @jeff6899
      @jeff6899 7 років тому

      Thx Sulcata Grove...our all-time record high is 122...but temps at 119 & above are very rare. As you know, Mango's pretty much love the heat, but still have to adapt over time to those unusually high temps....we get freezes occasionally here...that is what is most devastating to young mango trees here. Tastings are just starting to pop up on rare occasion...this upcoming one will be held by a terrific new nursery couple here (where I bought the Alphonso) and hopefully will be more common ! Thx for the feedback on Sweet Tart...I was out on a long weekend vacation when this nursery held their 1st impromptu tasting and Sweet Tart was also very highly rated by them...so definitely appreciate your added feedback...the key now for me...is how do I find the room ?? ;) I have to likely remove something I love that is already established to add another fruit tree :) Have a great finish to the wkend...

      When it comes to mangos, one needs to be assertive to enjoy the most fruit 😂 there are several varieties where Craig gets the short end of the fruit.

    I went mango tasting at Fairchild Gardens a few years ago and I thought that Nam Doc Mai was among my favorite mangos. 8.5 is too low. Nam Doc Mai is sweet, yet complex in taste and fragrant. I would give it a 9.5 easily!

      Frank S - We really do enjoy NDM, but side by side with Coconut Cream or some of the other new Zill's varieties, it falls down our list bit. Hopefully, as this tree matures, the fruit will be even better.

      Are Coconut Cream and some of the newer Zill varieties dwarf like NDM #4?

    Scraping mango off the skin and seed with your teeth gives you a chance to experience a broader spectrum of flavor.

      @@presterjohn1697 Thanks for watching! Since we didn’t have many mangos this year, I pushed the limits with my mango allergy and tried more of the flesh near the skin and seed which definitely added to the mango tasting experience.

    What would your top 10 mangoes in order or even top 5. I watch all your videos. But would like to know

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  7 років тому +2

      Not sure I could put them in order, but my favorites (Celeste) are Coconut Cream, Po Pyu Kalay, Lemon Zest, Eldon, Bailey's Marvel, Fruit Punch, and Sweet Tart. Still have not tasted Orange Sherbet or Cotton Candy (or many others :). Craig says some of his favorites are PPK, Coconut Cream, and Lemon Zest. Ice Cream and Pina Colada are yummy too. So many wonderful mangos in Florida. Guess that wasn't very helpful.

    I"ve tree for last 15 years.I don"t think that this is a very good variety,top tier mango.It is very sweet but lackin' in true mango flavor.It has a metallic or medicinal after taste.Mangos should have an inharant sweetness,spiciness,traditional mango flavor and at least a little complexity.
    I just top worked that tree with Chaunsa,Malda and Amrapalli.I grade this one a 5.

    Of all the mangoes I've had NDM is the most over rated of the major varieties for flavor and many others agree. Pine Island scores it a 5 out of 5 tho. Very one dimensional. Sweet but boring. Reminded me a bit of like eating honeydew melon in that way. I had thought about planting it till I tried a few. Love your videos keep up the good work. : )

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  7 років тому +7

      Thanks Steve for watching! NDM is the first mango Valerie fell in love with. So much of eating fruit is nostalgic...growing your own helps too. Valerie has her own little tree this fruit came off of - which I am sure added to her rating of 10 : )
