  • I planted a grafted Nam Doc Mai (polyembyonic type!) mango that I purchased form Green Life nursery (Phoenix, AZ) in September 2019. It has flowered and set fruit but this year coming up on 3 years, it ripened its first fruit. In this video I share a bit about the variety and do a tasting. NDM is fantastic!

    Oh man...just to watch you scoop out the flesh and you can see way less fiber than store bought. I'm jealous!

    Congratulations on your mango harvest. Personally, it's my favorite fruit when it's ripe. The mango ice cream is as delicious as the popsicles.

    Can I just say how much I like your videos? Great stuff. I’m about ready to harvest a Valencia Pride and Juicy Peach mango in the next couple weeks. I am in the East Valley on flood irrigation. Keep up the good work!

      Mangos definitely do not grow in AZ like they do in FL but glad my little tree held onto this one and I got my 1st taste. It's sooo good!

    Congratz! As far as I know are mango seeds not stable, they fall back to seedlings of common variety with very small and fibred fruits.

      The NDM did not fruit this year but is pushing lots of growth. That's great to hear it's one of your favorites! I recently acquired a small Sweet Tart mango tree and am excited to see that one grow.

    Imagine how much better it would have been if it ripened fully and turned yellow like it should. I have a few of those trees and yes, they are like eating happiness.

    My tree has 1 also. It'll be ready soon. Can't wait. Thank you for the video - I identified. xx Would be good to know the varieties you've tried so we can get a sense of how good this one is in comparison.

      That's awesome! I've tried Raposa, Mallika, Coconut Cream, Buttercream, Lemon Zest, PPK, Manilla, Tommy Atkins, Kent, Keitt, Ataulfo, Alphonso, Bombay, and Edward from Florida. While taste is personal, my favorite mango variety for flavor is Coconut Cream followed by PPK but IMO nothing beats a home-grown NDM (classic mango taste).

    This variety is good, but when you try the (Bahrain One) variety, you will be sure that there is no mango better than it tastes. I wish I could send its tree to you, but it is far The size and smell is very good and the taste is something from heaven

    What kind of protection do you give it in the winter? I’m looking for a mango to plant in Glendale, this is really helpful.

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  Рік тому

      Thanks! I use clumping bamboo as a natural over story to protect them from wind in general, frost in winter, and shade in summer. I also heavily mulch to insulate the roots. I also started planting more polyembryonic seedlings as they have a bit higher cold tolerance than grafted plants. I don't employ frost cloth for the mangos but that is very effective for plants that don't have protection from other plants. If you start watching at 9 minutes in from this video I go into more detail on the microclimate and setup - ua-cam.com/video/vQ8jPnVkT_c/v-deo.html

    Natasha, do you know how big your dwarf mango tree will eventually get?
    Now I definitely plan on planting a Doc Mai, and the mango Ice Cream variety also sounds delicious.
    Sure love gardening. Thanks again.

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  2 роки тому +1

      It's hard to say. In an ideal climate they can range from 10'-15' tall and wide. Here I'm thinking maybe half that size. It's dwarf nature makes for a stronger base which makes it stand up to high winds better than large varieties. NDM has very high disease resistance. Ice Cream does not so you may have issues with anthracnose on that one which will require fungicide treatments more often.

  • @KathrynRoberts60

    I didn't realize the Honey mango came in a dwarf variety. They are ripe when they're a deep yellow and slightly wrinkled

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  Місяць тому

      Honey and Nam Doc Mai are different cultivars. NDM comes from Thailand and Honey/Ataulfo is said to be of Indonesian origin

      Greenlife nursery in Phoenix. I believe all mango varieties are self-fruitful including this one. You only need one.

    Hi plz assist. I noticed it’s green on the outside. Shouldn’t you wait until it’s yellow?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  Рік тому

      I did not pick it; the fruit dropped off the tree on its own so it was well ripened. Nam Doc Mai can range from green to yellow skin when ripe.
