      I was about to say the same. He's good, but he's not packing 120 nails per reload. Get those guys some guns and compressors! Like my old boss making me bang 1000s t posts by hand into volcanic rock because he liked to watch us work our asses off and earn our pay. It wasnt until a few years into the line of work I experienced a compressed banger. I was furious how easy it made it and the permanent damage in my hands could have been avoided.

    • @rtmccormick1
      @rtmccormick1 7 років тому +10

      Almost every roofing crew I've seen runs gas engine powered compressors. More power and no risk of breaking circuits. You could cut the required crew per job in half, spread them out over multiple concurrent jobs, and probably do 4 times the jobs per day. There is no advantage to hand nailing that outweighs the benefits of using pneumatic nailers.

    • @drock5108

    • @Sheba936
      @Sheba936 8 років тому +2

      +John D One A Square is 100 Hundred Square Feet. One Bundle is usually 1/3 of a Square. Therefore 33-1/3 Square Feet in a Bundle.

    • @gerrittklashorst7306
      @gerrittklashorst7306 7 років тому +1

      No sir a square is a section that is 10'x10' or 3 sheets of plywood. You ideally want to place one nail at both ends no more then an inch from the end of the shingle and the rest of the nails should be dispersed somewhat evenly between the end two. It really depends on the roof pitch where in the nail zone you put the nails. For a steep roof over a 5-12 you can nail right on the line but with a 4-12 or lower pitch you need to nail just a little bit higher so you don't have water bleeding back on the nail heads. Go online and find instructions from elk, iko, Owens corning or gaf cause they are some of the biggest material manufactures in the us and have plenty of installation instructions for you

    Is this 1970 or something? Why are you all hand banging. The one guy is kind of fast, only puts 4 nails in though which is bunk. And the rest of the crew puts a shingle down every minute. Buy a compressor and some guns! It will make your days go by quicker, instead of the slow guys putting a shingle down every minute, they could put a shingle down every few seconds, with 6 nails on the nail line.

      Yeah that would be a weird law. Hand banging is so slow. And have you ever realized when you rip a roof that was hand banged, it comes off extremely easy? I'd love to see someone try and hand bang a 12/12, or 18/12. Would be nearly impossible, it's much easier with a gun because you can hold the shingle with one hand and nail with the other.

    Roofing is a young Man's game! I did it for years, I once carried 200 packs of 80lb shingles up a 12 ft ladder, and walked them to the top roof in 1 day and flipped them into on the top peaks of 3 subdivision houses we Where roofing! Talk about sore AF the next day! Anyway, I prefer a gun, but I can hand nail almost as fast..

      Mike Brennan we get paid when the job is finished. We have to go fast to make a living. We need to be onto the next job. And for us with experience, going fast for us isn't excluding workmanship. If someone has little to no experience and going that "fast", then it's a problem. We understand everyone thinks they're special and their house is the only house that matters, but you aren't. And it isn't. It's just another house. We do this everyday for years. We can go fast and do it right. If we didn't, or couldn't, we wouldnt be in business very long. People need to make a living.

    • @chadgrov
      @chadgrov 6 років тому +1

      Thurston Crawford when you've been doing it for a decade or two it's just another house. Sorry to say. It's done right and that's all that matters. Also most people DO want it done fast because they don't want their home to be a construction site for more than a day or two. Not to mention that with years of experience shinglers tend to go at their own pace, which is generally "fast". There's a difference between fast and sloppy/indifferent. If I give you a 10 year warranty on labour and whatever manufacturer warranty on material there's not much to whine about. Im sure you don't complain when your car needs repairs and it's done in a timely fashion. Same thing.

    Yeah I roofed a house a day with a Mexican guy in Oakland, California named Rochendo. He didnt speak English and I spoke very little Spanish at that time. Anyways,, he used a tray just like that. I had never seen one before him, or since. I would set up the compressor, get the air hose to the gun, put on metal/paper/starter & first couple of rows and then peek over on his side and he'd be about 1/3 - 1/2 done! That guy was a machine. One day I said, hey man you ever used a gun? He came over and was even 3-5 times faster!!! I took my gun back and he laughed at me. He broke bulls for the rodeo on his one day off each week. I stayed in bed all day recovering. Where do you get a tray like that?

  • @pauloftarsus8145
    @pauloftarsus8145 6 років тому

    Number one. I'm a faster nailer than that guy and two he isn't even nailing in the right places. He will have to come down the rack and add the fourth nail as well. I know the guy that invented that thing hanging around his neck it's called a stripper 3 row for comp two row for wood. also which I can probably load faster than that guy, I also know the guy that invented those shingles which are called 3 Dimensionals, the first were Architect 80's and we made them before Arch 80's ever came out. I'll add this, my STAPLE gun will out lay any NAIL GUN ever invented. NP. Fact. He's also sitting wrong and using knee pads. Guys an amatuer. He will wear out in 10 years or less, back problems. Lol. Give him an A for effort.
    Makes a nice show for nerds that dont know cripe though like 90% of the roofers and 100% of the home owners and contractors. Let me teach that guy, and you will have the fastest roofer ever. Course Ide need a hundred a day just for lessons PLUS whatever I put down myself. That should total 200 a day, also probably in less than 8 hours. Gravy. NP. I might take my pay plus a few bucks a square off the guys squares which is the way it should be done. But for thee fastest roofer? I'll need a hundred a day, just for the lessons. He wastes moves, nails wrong and is slow anyhow. Or 750 a week salary 9 cash) and Ill make every guy on your crew faster than that guy. 5 days. I don't do weekends. Been there done that. Not worth it.
    I will give ya credit for one thing, he is using the right hammer. IF its a fixed gauge and not a slide gauge. Anybody who uses an estwing should be fired. I also need to see his tape and his knife.
    "Normal guy" is a noob, I can make him faster than your fastest guy. In 3 months. Just sayin. Send me 500 bucks and Ill tell you with a paper and pencil whats really goin on. To many things to list in a comment on youtube. You do wood? Tile? How Mop? Rubber? Torch Down? I do ALL. Shingling is the EASIEST roof their is. Hot Mop is hardest. A good wood man is impossible to find. Ive done steamed wood shingles on rolled eaves. You dont even know what I just said hahahaha. Today its "Made in China Roofing." Quality is meaningless. I know quality AND speed. Tell ya something else, that roof their will be messed up...why? Cause you put both those bozos on one side. The pattern is also messed up. Your running a six inch pattern and not even doing that right, those shingles should be ran on 5 and 5/8. That information alone I should charge you 100 bucks. Roof Doctor, Lol. Do I see a chalk line in between the guy on bottom and guy on top? Nope. That'll be another hundred. I've forgotten more than you'll ever know.
    Im telling you I can tell you FIVE things you're doing wrong from watching this vid, I could tell you 10 things your doing wrong from looking at the roof after its done. In 5 minutes. Kudos for having "some" pride in your work, but it's misplaced. You don't know what your doing. God bless. Now just imagine you Really knew what you were doing. At that point your making money and can say, "I did that." And smile. I'll take a hundred for my comment.

    neway I know my old boss is fast as anyone I know, I see other crews, and companies and its SO FAR beyond ALL of them ive seen..Or EVER seen again, even on here with guns..>he smokes EVERYONE I see on here...Its like well known t hing that he can put on a BIG ASS roof..By himself in a day! but his dad did it before him so hes been gunning for ? 34 years id say. lol Still fast as fuck...id like to go get a roofing job with his company, I like the guy, both bosses son and dad...but they just wont pay people what they are worth, and they live in castles built for them and buy 90-150K trucks ..BRAND NEW...Sick and had three great trucks already, and we got paid 10 an hour, and denied a Christmas bonus for two years I got I think 100 bucks t he first year I started, and those 3 years I was there is when we had a full crew of fast and guys thata did that for 10 years under my bosses son...THEY QUIT at the same time, 3 of them..Cuz they were only making as much as MOST roofing companies. Normally,..Starting out like I would get 15 and DONT NEED ANY experience, and they promise raises the better you get and get evaluated and if u work with JEALOUS shit people that know im good at the shita nd only been there a year and knew as much as all of them guys, except my boss. I was with him most the time so I seen a lot of things, and he w ould make me make flashing, and then make the craziest cuts that half to fit flush and have a lip on the upper part and grind about...1/4in or well maybe a hair less than that id say...and then the lip has to fit PERFECT in so many ways, I was tricky, and he said I went fast ...He beat me by not real long, 15 mins and im like lol ur done how can I be doing it fast, and hes like im whatever 40 and not everyone and have a great eye , because u will run into problems he said, it s who can problem solve the best and get it done perfect. I act ually LIKE to roof sounds so crazy...but yea and im not a greedy dude..by any means... id let AN Y ONE that knows me personal Im confident they would vouche on ANYTHING I say. im rusty now, id have to relearn numbers I need to know and just u know everything, its bee 4 years now, but its like riding a bike, just a few days of hearing certain numbers, j us hearing one will snap all the information back into my brain and yea once I even get a reminder ill problaby just be able to look ar ound and remembering how it was...idk why I like it...I think and I don't have a job LOL, but I like HARD WORK, and I cadn come home beat up, and get a swhower relax and pass out in my chair trying to watch something LOL...and slept great them days...Miss it, if the money was just FAIR, even a LITTLE LESS than fair I would eccept but im not going to have a job BUSTING ASS, RISKING MY LIFE cuz people want to be roofers but are smart enough or want to put in HARD work EVEN if I give them smart work, Which if I wasn't there, NO ONE was going to this edge that is so fucking high u cant get to it other than top coming down to that side and yea so many ways u can slip and u would never be able to catch urself and its so fuckign high we didn't ahvea later to reach it from that side... BUT they just tore off the old roof and NOONE will go down and grab the shingles, and boss is flippin cuz he wotna nd just didn't know what to do..Im like hey give me that rope ill attach it to my lanyard and ill go down and u just keep tension and id throw about a bundle of WET ass shingles on my shoulders and I had him pull me up and its easy if ur careful and watch how u move. But yea three more ropes but NO ONE would go down...I get it? or not really tbh..they sit around and literally watched me, and normally the boss will GO OFFF on them guys cuz ALL the crew are just standing around WAT CHING lol like im thinkn u mfers need to go do other shit and get this thing done, and lol the main old boss was just so fucking happy, smiling cuz I was doing that and doing ti really fucking fast...lol id literally run dam near vertical lol like im on a repel linea nd boss is like omg don't run sideways lol cuz he had to leave and I do think he bitchd at them when he was leaving and I had to tie down and get the last quarter of that sides shingles, so yea hes like if u need someone to get the rest of those, and then he yells someone is holding that rope if I ask them too, but I was able to put shingles on both shoulders and like just hand over hand walking up the fucking drop off lol..ive seen people afall off roofs that aren't even that high and hit concrete and man..he got fucked up..great dude, all good though hes doing good...but ive almost fell off of HIGH up, and ? GOD lol but I was about to go off a house head first and if I would of it was about a 35ft drop to a long suburban road and gravel. DEAD and im falling o backwards, I stepped on a plank that some fucdking idiot didn't nail together and im walking on a 2x4 and I just drop the right leg and was SOOO far back leaning like and MOMENTUM and I just idk I remember reaching the bundle of shingles I like thru it hard towards roof and leg go with oen and it litter pulled me back up at a point where if that didn't happened no matter what I did I was FUCKEED..to realy that bag of shingles saved mhy life when I used it for a counter balance in a fucking split second, ol fucking scared to death thinking im done, and just reacted like I did so fast, cuz I know I was going to splatter if I went off...But never feel and seen a lot of people get hurt, but yea...ikd im about safety, but I work with any roofing company that hired me if they said we do this and that , this and that way. So yea, long as u are careful and have enough experience BUT experienced mfers can and have fell off roofs too...Just saying im not um ...the safety police and all roofers know what im getting around too..lol so...yea...I wouldn't mind going back to work roofing.
