    Hey Brother, I'm not a roofer but I work in the construction industry, and I think this is a great video. First of all, the pride that you take in your craft and the amount of "care" you demonstrate in doing the job "right", is rare but encouraging. I always love seeing someone who still takes pride in their work. It's obvious that you not only know what needs to be done, but you also care enough to make sure it is done correctly.
    Secondly, your willingness and desire to share your knowledge, is the mark of a true and confident professional. Since graduating from UGA in 2003, I've worked in multiple industries but unfortunately, one thing that I've seen across the board, is an unwillingness of people to share their knowledge and/or their techniques with others that work for the same company and/or are new to the industry. In most of these instances it is because these people are so insecure that they worry someone else may be just a little bit better than them at something. As I said, it takes a self-confident professional with a true passion for their craft, to share their technique and implore other's to utilize it.
    Thank you again for the great video and for the quality work that you do.

Grandfather got diagnosed with Alzheimers while I was still in school in 2007. Cousin took over the family business and it's still going til this day. Next year will be 50yrs since my Grandfather started the company, he would be proud of the roofer I have become today.

      He does fast work. His shingles are out of line by 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch and his nail line is crooked and if you look you can see he does not follow his own advice. Maybe this roof will last 25 or 30 years at best. The one I put on my own house 36 years ago looks brand new today and the one my grandfather put on his roof in 1915 is still in good condition and neither his nor mine has ever leaked and that is the most important function of any roof. Roofers today rarely warranty their work for more than ten years and few last more than 30 because of sloppy work and taking short cuts.

  • @johnsparkman8015
    @johnsparkman8015 5 років тому +4

    This is exactly the way I shingle. The only way to shingle this fast is to never but the gun down, and your advice to put the nail on the line is precisely what makes his work quality. Unfortunately, few shingle manufacturers, very fee contractors and even fewer roofers give a damn where the nail is. High nailing will cause shingles to slide within 7 years, but you can not file a manufacturer’s claim.

    In this video: I was trying to show the technique we use to set the shingles in place ,so you don't have to drop the gun every time you use both hands to set the shingle in place, I've seen many roofers working on their knees , setting the shingles before they make the video, in this video i didn't set up anything, i just opened the shingles and set them to my left, my left hand is the one that grabs them and my right hand holds the nail gun to help align them in place, it looks so simple but i would love to see many of the guys that use both hands to just set the shingles in place, trying to do what i do in the video. Also i was nailing at slower pace trying to show the nail patern, by the way the shingles are from Owens Corning true defintion, they come in a bundles and they're set up like you see in the bundle, 1 shingle is upside down and the other is not, so you have to flip every other one .
    sorry for the many haters that are missing the big picture here, I'll make another video showing the different techniques on how to install shingles.
    thanks for watching!!!
    Eric Garcia.

      I use to tell my crews same thing nail right then get fast I don’t lay my gun down and I place all 5 nails the same apart your 3-4th nails are close to each other and I’m faster I did 6sq in 32mins with a pipe and half of the wall to cut I can hand drive 3sq hour constantly if you have a good thrower you can go faster and torch down I love but mope down I’ve done my share you can have it I seen a kettle blow up on a guy it’s not pretty I’ve seen people hurry and splash people not good I’ve done tin shacks I still like shingles I’ve been luck to work some old Victorian homes with shingles that haven’t been sold in 60years found in wear houses stored up left overs like the diamond shingle they first came out with and them tiger striped shingles most people don’t see them unless you take of a 3-4payer roof out in Virginia and places like that when you buy a gun take the shit of the bottom makes gun faster don’t bottom out or snag on you and it’s not all in how fast you shot it it’s how fast u lay it on key that wins the race every time

    I've been looking at roofing videos all morning long to help me learn how to shingle a shed. Here is what I have learned through all the comments I've read.
    1. Absolutely NO one does it the same way
    2. Absolutely EVERYONE is doing something wrong
    3. There are a lot of uneducated people in the business and the industry has a huge training/educational issue
    4. I have less and less confidence in the roofing industry

The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however, the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement ONLY if I use their shingles again. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general? How good these IKO shingles in comparison to the other brands?

For me personally i go fast but not super fast but the thing i pride myself on is a consistent speed all day and i think that is the most important part.

      do not remove the sure nail reinforce strip... You will void the warranty. O/C Preferred Contractor

      yes it stays on until the install..the purpose of the tar under the plastic strip is a moisture barrier to keeping the roof from leaking and to keep the shingles from tearing in the wind.. i went to school for roofing a siding and was a subcontractor and co-owner for many years. I never got a service call for leaks

    I usually have a guy feeding me shingles, i think it's faster, but again, that's my opinion,i might be wrong

      @DJAZAlwayz 10 років тому

      i like the bundles flipped and right besides me . i used to run a 2 stagger pattern , now i run columns with a 3 stagger pattern, my feeder keeps up just as quick as i hammer down

    • @Garciasroofing
      @Garciasroofing  10 років тому +3

      you must be quick with the hammer then , I use a air gun, that's the way I learned on my apprentice days.

    • @DJAZAlwayz
      @DJAZAlwayz 9 років тому +1

      my first boss taught us to become fast with our hammer, my second boss put emphasis on getting quick with the gun sooner then later therefore puttin us on it right away for prep and shingling .
      i rather my first boss's way as their is less clutter around without the hoses , and my absolute genious labourers are in the trailor trying to find shit or figuring out how to run a compressor lolol

      please read I know you were showing off your speed but you gave a lot of good tips. I think it would be cool if you did a video on how to start the shingles and how you finish the peek of the roof. you showed the middle very well in that quick clip but just need the start and finish the peek with the tips of the trade in between like you did here. I know the basics but I am always looking to learn more and learn new tips and tricks. hope you make one. thanks

    Just like racing, straight aways are free, well that's where the money is. As a builder I would watch roofers get to the valleys and overhangs. That's where the talent really comes in. Awesome work boys, don't let up.

    Good job Brother. That has to kill your back . I always used knee pads and worked on my knees . I could do 15 to 18 squares a day new construction back in the 1980’s making $10.00 a square. Made a lot more money doing counter flashing brick walls and chimneys and flashing curb mounted skylights .i am still in the business after all these years working in sales now .

    These shingles are made with a strip that is called sure nail strip, this is to secure the shingles to the roof deck , it dont matter in this case, when you dont have it , you have to adjust your pressure to a 100psi, to prevent this problem.

      @sealtite904 10 років тому +1

      I just did some Owens Corning oak ridge shingles for a contractor. Tiny nailing line too haha

    • @uruiamnot
      @uruiamnot 10 років тому +2

      sealtite904 I think the manufacturers only have such a small nailing target because... aggghhh.. they call the contractor onto the floor and blame him for any problems if they blow off or leak. Those reinforced nail strips are a bear, though they make easy targets. My guys hate Owens Corning with the Sure Nail strip I guess because they are hard to pull off if they make a mistake? Maybe harder to cut? I will have to ask them. jajaja If I nail shingles (rare occasions), I like the obvious target to make it easier. I have seen so many bad roofers not know where to nail properly that it gets old training them.

    • @Garciasroofing
      @Garciasroofing  10 років тому +3

      uruiamnot Actually there is a hook blade that cuts them like paper, they sell at home depot in a package of 100 , they last more than the hook blades the roofing supplier sell. Try them , you might like them.

    • @uruiamnot
      @uruiamnot 10 років тому +1

      Are they something like Talon brand? I can't remember, but I think a lot of times I just use whatever is on sale for hook blades. But no, I just don't know why my guys don't like OC shingles with the sure nail strip. Everyone around here uses Tamko well over half the time. I think it's just what has been around the longest and what people get used to.

    It is good to see business owners who are very proud
    of their life's career and the work that they do.
    I did subscribe to your channel, for work on my roof.
    Too bad you're not in my area, I'd just go ahead and pay your
    crew to do the job..
