The whole album is incredible. I bought it in 1987 on the day it came out and it blew me away. In my opinion the best album the band made with Fish. I thought the band had died when he left but Steve Hogarth came in and added a new dimension to the band. If White Russian resonated with you I’d give the Hogarth era song “Gaza” from 2012 a listen. Absolutely haunting and thought provoking too
Very good reaction! You understood the message of the song. One of my favorite songs of the Fish era. Even after 37 years, it still grabs me like the first time I heard it
I bought this album when I was 15 in 1987 . And to this day I think it's the greatest album of all time. Listen to it in its entirely it will blow your mind . Thanks for reacting to it . Listen to Grendal also if you want a story , it's beowolf from the side of the monster . A 19 minute masterpiece . All the best my friend ✌🏻❤️
Fish, the Scottish poets touring for the last time before retirement in the Hebrides Islands, was in Antwerp a few days ago. Incredible solo carrier too!
Holy crap! Such a great band with Fish! You should listen to the entire album because it’s a concept album. Yes, dark. They were a modern mix of Genesis and a few other bands. Excellent musicians. And the lyrics were always so amazing, poetic, symbolic and metaphorical. This album is about alcoholism, among other things.
British prog band. So many great bands have become forgotten in time. Marillion still has their fans, but it’s a fairly small fan base. I usually don’t care for prog but Marillion seems to fit in there quite nicely somehow.
Here's a more personal song featuring Steve Hogarth the current vocalist, it's called "After Me". Not something you'll see recommended a lot, but it is a song that will boost your spirits.
@@juggletom Nobody? The last albums have not only received good reviews, but have also sold quite well. They are playing in larger venues again, including three times at the Royal Albert Hall
It was released in 1987 on the album "Clutching at Straws" It was dealing with the shift politically in the western world to the right and the dangers of allowing the rise of Neo-Nazism
Ah you found Marillion at last. Fantastic band so many great songs. The Fish era by far the best. This album is amazing from start to finish. Chelsea Monday is brilliant, try The Web, (original, not remaster) also from Script… you’ll see how Stephen Rothery ranks amongst the greats, Gilmour/ Lifeson/ Blackmore/ Rhodes, etc. awesome soloist Jigsaw, Sugar Mice, etc. Fish’s lyrical brilliance shines through too.
Hi Saeed, sorry to go off point here, have a listen to orchestral maneuvers in the dark, OMD for short. Started of as an 80's synth band, listen to Joan of Arc and you'll be hooked...
Great album and song, but I do have a problem with the new elements put into the song in the new remaster you listen to here. Lots of small changes in the remasters from Steven Wilson. I don´t like my favorite songs changed 😂😊. Anyways, keep these Marillion reactions coming!
Their early big epic was "Grendel", based on the Anglo-Saxon myth story. Most are more personal & social observations. The "Misplaced Childhood" album was a concept one based on Fish's childhood, inspired whilst on a 10 hour acid trip. That was also their biggest selling record, going to No.1 in the UK and reaching Platinum status.
@@SaeedReacts. I have met him, at the bar at the Marquee club in the 80s. Funny enough, he was offered roles in two big Scottish based films "Highlander" & "Braveheart", but missed out on both due to touring commitments.
Interesting factoid: Lead singer Fish got his nickname/stage name from drinking like a... Plus they are still touring and selling out to 8500 seat venues along with Marillion Weekends in the Nederlands, Europe, Britain, US ocationally. More Marillion!🤐
No he didn’t, he got the name because when he worked for the forestry commission and staying in digs he was only allowed to have a bath once or twice a week, so when he did he spent hours in the bath hence the name of Fish. He’s on his farewell tour as he retires next year and says he will revert to just using his actual name of Derek, I’m going twice.
He, She, Their: Got that from an associate of Derrick's in an interview (did I get the spelling wrong as well🤬). Been a huge fan of both Marillion and Fish, while being lucky enough to have seen them both. I appreciate hearing your version because up till I heard/saw interview, I never gave it a thought, and to be perfectly upfront, Fish was a heavy drinker and just recently cut down; quit for a couple months with his wife.
@@hemispheres6942 I got my version from him, he had said it many times and did so again on his Fish on Friday live videos he did from lockdown till very recently on FB, as they are archived on his website, you can probably find it. There is no disputing he was a drinker but he's Scottish, we all are (or were in my case).

My all time favourite band! Thanks for reacting to this!
Appreciate the thought involved in the reaction. A like is coming every time you react to Marillion, regardless of early or later eras.
My favorite band for many years, still in my top 3. Mainly with original singer Fish.
Same, when the end of the year is near and Spotify drops their wrapped overview, Marillion is always in my top 5 bands listened to through the year.

A beautiful song by them is Estonia…studio live with string quartet.
Another is Sugar Mice in the Rain.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Marillion, both eras are great. Still a massive fan from the eighties to now. Great live band.

I was just in Antwerp a week ago. Small world 😀
Definitely want to learn more about him.
Without doubt one of the great lyricists and storytellers of the last 40+ years. Fantastic album
@@drumvc8060 definitely one of my favorites.
We don't get any better at learning from history. Great drumming from Ian Mosely on this one.
The whole album is great. More mature than their earlier albums I think. My favourite from the band.

you know this record is great, great. There are no bad tracks on it. There aren't any. Like all records from the first to this record
Wow, brings me back to long forgotten memories. The theme is still pretty actual today unfortunately
It definitely is still relevant today unfortunately.
Great song from their 4th Album (the last with Fish as the singer)... So there are 19 albums left to hear! Enjoy!
By the way i suggest "Estonia", the version with their friends from the orchestra. Dealing with the sinking of the ferry. Powerful and intense Lyrics.
Such a good song. Great band. Remember when Kayleigh first came out around 1985. They got my attention then

the band of my youth. Thank you for this gem. Nobody listens to them any more, Its a shame.

Fish is an incredible poet. His solo albums are highly recommended for their superb lyrics.
The best song from the best album. Brilliant!
