ANY TRACK from their last couple of albums especially the latest album An Hour Before It's Dark. Basically ANY track off that album is brilliant especially Care (which has 4 parts) and whilst, coming when the album did, might seem to be referring to just COVID it also refer to a friend dying of cncer and the helth workers surrounding them all. The Crow and The Nightgale (which is a tribute to Leonard Cohen) and Sierra Leone are equally magnificent tracks.

@@playitagainsue The current lineup of the band has been together since 1989 and whilst I love the first albums that this lineup produced (especially Seasons End and Brave), all 16 studio albums are brilliant, however FEAR and AHBID seem to have re-energised them. One mustn't forget the first 4 albums with Fish as vocalist which were far more successful commercially. Seasons End is a good accessible entry point for this current iteration of the band, a lot of the music was written for Fish to sing as the group had almost become his backing band by that time. After he left there is a lot more cohesion is the songs from the group. My favourite band even though the 70's were my teen years and produced absolute classics.

Or check their utube channel with lovely introduces to the members. They are from Britain and have a huge fanbase which support them in going on in the business without a record company. This song was a bit of a tribute to The Beach Boys and that era, but with a twist of that period’s demise. It references Brian Wilson’s mental issues with the lyric about him looking for the perfect microwave. The band has a distinctly core sound which has carried through their forty-plus year career, but they have never shied away from dabbling in various genres as they have with “Cannibal Surf Babe”.

    Hi Sue,
Marillion have often been compared to early GENESIS.
Used to be fronted by Fish, from SCOTLAND.
    Now, Steve Hogarth.
    A prog Rock Band.
Easter, is My favourite Marillion song , from Seasons End.

Thanks for the great reaction Sue! Welcome to Marillion! You've got over 40 years of music to explore from 1983 to the present day. No two albums sound quite the same with two excellent concepts albums in there. One with each vocalist. One of their best prog songs is called "The Invisible Man" sung with the current vocalist Steve Hogarth whom you just heard on "Cannibal Surf Babe". From the first vocalist "Fish" i can recommend "Sugar Mice" because of the great vocal performance and lyrics, and the wonderful guitar solo from Steve Rothery.

This is one of those bands that have a good following, but I never got around to checking out. I know they were referenced as a prog band, which is where my taste in music leans but I haven't heard anything that made me want to dig deeper. There have been a couple of bands that I've discovered from reaction channels where I have listened to an album but that's because the song on the reaction wow'd me to dig deeper. What I love about reaction channels is every once in a while you'll come across some real gems that cater to your tastes.

@@JeromeDukes Hey Jason, it is definitely a good way to find new music to dive deeper into. I feel the same way as a reactor. I get to listen to new stuff all the time by featuring new bands (to me). Any way we can get exposure to new music is a good thing 🤩🧡

    • @JeromeDukes
      @JeromeDukes 24 дні тому +1

@@playitagainsue Totally agree. However, It's not just new bands. Growing up I wouldn't buy an album based on a radio hit, album cover or on a whim. Generally it was word of mouth, love for a band or I knew for the most part the whole album was going to be a banger. Take one off radio hits, I've heard quite a few deep cuts from many albums that imo are better than the radio hits. You also have popular bands like Deep Purple or Iron Maiden that have huge followings, but just weren't on my radar. Sure I knew the popular song but generally you'll find some real cool gems in their deep cuts. They main reason you don't hear these deep cuts is because the song is too long for radio play and thus gets buried. Two really cool bands that I'm discovered through reaction channels is Spock's Beard and Camel. It could be a variety of reason that made we want to dig deeper. A guitar solo, cool melody, creative drums and groove, a technique on a instrument that's fresh to my ear or some amazing creative transition. Whatever the catalyst was, I'm so happy I discovered these bands thanks to reaction channels.

@JeromeDukes Lots of good stuff there, Jason...great points. Often radio played songs were different sounding than the rest of the album...so very smart. I will give thise 2 bands you mentioned a listen. Thanks a bunch 😃💙

@@playitagainsue With Camel the song that got me into them was Stationary Traveler, mostly for the guitar solo. I find them to have a Pink Floyd kinda style to their music. If you want to do a reaction to one of the best songs I've discovered from YT reactions. That song would be Stargazer by Rainbow. The singer is Ronnie James Dio and the guitar player is Richie Blackmore from Deep Puple and the drummer I believe is Cozy Powell.

    Nice reaction 👍🏻
    Marillion is a great band.
A combination of Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Radiohead and Muse.
This song is a bit weird and out of the box. It's about the Beach Boys, among other things.
The entire album Afraid of Sunlight is awesome.
'Gazpacho' is about boxers Mike Tyson and Jake la Motta and O.J. Simpson
'Out of this world' is about Donald Campbell, who didn't survive his attempt to regain his water speed world record in '67:
300 miles an hour on water in your purpose-build machine
'King' is mostly about Kurt Cobain.
Marillion was the first band that played in Munich's Terminal, Germany, where Nirvana played their ever last gig.
The albums Brave and Marbles are also great.
The Great Escape, live '13 is awesome
Neverland, live '09 is amazing , a love song ❣️, 2nd half based on Peter Pan🧚🏻‍♂️
Their first singer was Fish and they made 4 albums. Misplaced Childhood ('85) is a must listen. You've probably heard Kayleigh on the radio.
You can't go wrong with this band!!

Marillion were huge in UK and in time of punk or Post Punk they were a Prog band
They had a massive hit called Kayleigh which would be next obvious choice
But then low and behold they switch singer
Their original singer named Fish left and was replaced by Steve Hogarth the singer on this track
Markus how do you feel about Fish ?

This is quite a surprising first listen choice for Marillion, but glad you liked it. Don't expect more like that from them, it's unique to their more rock- and prog-leaning catalog. That album, which came out in 1995, is very strong and has a lot of great material in it.
The album before it, "Brave", is a fictional narrative concept album about a true headline in the papers of a woman found wandering on the Severn Bridge in England who was unable or unwilling to communicate her identity or background. Steve Hogarth, the vocalist, wrote a fictional narrative exploring themes of trauma, isolation, and recovery. It's an amazing listen, but probably best to hear the whole thing instead of just a few parts.

Thanks for reacting to a Marillion song. "Cannibal Surf Babes" is a one-in-a-hundred pick from the band's immense catalog and not at all reflective of what the band normally does, so you may have been misled a bit as to what Marillion is. In a nutshell, they do songs that enter your ears, bypass your brain, and go straight to your heart in ways no other band can do.
First of all, when you listen to Marillion, always choose a live performance, never do the studio track. Their singer, Steve Hogarth, is super singing in front of a crowd, and not so good working in the sedate atmosphere of a studio.
Second, most of the band's output prior to 2019 was love songs or storytelling. Starting with the 2019 release, "F.E.A.R." (an acronym for "fuck everyone and run"), they switched to a much more political approach. Hogarth explained in an interview that guys in their mid-60's shouldn't focus on love songs and just might have learned enough about life to want to pass it along to their fans. That's a questionable assumption for Hogarth to make about the benefit of a some musicians giving their wisdom to their fans, but I fully understand the urge to pass along something as you approach the date of your inevitable death. It just brings a lot of baggage to the more recent songs, and if you don't agree with Hogarth's views on things, it's makes the two most recent albums harder to enjoy.
Third, Marillion, as you may have guessed by now, is a living, breathing band. They are still releasing albums and performing live, most notably at "Marillion Weekends" held in odd years in cities all over the world. You should consider attending at the Marillion Weekend in Montreal next year, March 28-30, 2025. The guys aren't getting any younger and may stop touring at any time. Hogarth's magnificent voice has shown some wear-and-tear recently, IMHO. You may have missed seeing the Beatles in concert, but you can still see Marillion, perhaps the best live band in the world. The band's manager says current regulations in the USA make it difficult to impossible for a foreign band to tour the USA, hence the choice of a Canadian venue for a North American weekend.
Here's some links to some more highly acclaimed Marillion songs, all performed live:
    1. "Afraid of Sunlight" - a couple breaks up after faking their relationship for years. She's an alcoholic. He doesn't tell us what his bad habits might be. The song title is a take on the common phrase that "lies cannot stand the light of day". They have lied to each other and themselves for so long that they've become afraid of sunlight. ua-cam.com/video/5bawDvb6nBo/v-deo.html
    2. "The Great Escape" - The last song of a concept album describing the life of a young girl filled with predation, heartbreak, and sorrow, until she finally throws herself off a high suspension bridge to her death rather than bear the unendurable pain anymore. Sung in the first person, this is her suicide note: ua-cam.com/video/pQ74CwXcliM/v-deo.html
    3. "Ocean Cloud" - A song about the unique life of Sir Donald Allum, who rowed a one-man rowboat from Europe to North America, then back to Europe, then decided to do it a second time. A 17:00 minute song, but maybe their very best one. ua-cam.com/video/R2gSZXqpr2g/v-deo.html
    4. "Cover My Eyes" I haven't tried to figure out what this song is all about. It's just upbeat and fun. ua-cam.com/video/qEs7H4fwWzo/v-deo.html
    5. "Splintering Heart" Her heart was not just broken. It was torn to splinters. ua-cam.com/video/AKq6bhcio0Q/v-deo.html
    6. "Neverland" - A man's song to his long-time woman when he suddenly realizes what she has truly meant to him after all these years. The best love song, ever, for older couples who may have let that spark of young love die under the pressures of life. ua-cam.com/video/l3NhNz9-EOA/v-deo.html
    7. "Trap the Spark". As long as I'm talking about sparks. ua-cam.com/video/RrDu1Nn2rR8/v-deo.html
    8. "Go" - Imagine just dropping everything and going wherever. A fine, simple ballad and a great video: ua-cam.com/video/Xmgf_NyAlTs/v-deo.html
I could easily go all the way to #50, but that's probably more than enough for a new listener.t

This wasn't bad Sue, but TBH, the prog rock type of style isn't really something I've ever got into in a big way .. I can appreciate the technical prowess and the desire to be doing things a little different to mainstream pop / rock, but I can't get my teeth into it .. The music seem to change course every few seconds, which is OK for a song or 2, but I can't listen to too much of it.
