Welcome to Marillion, the best band in the world, and nobody knows them. They are Progressive, of course. Think of Pink Floyd being in touch with their feminine side. Steve Hogarrth ("h"), the singer doesn't just sing, he feels the whole song on stage, every time. They give me goosebumps each time I've seen them live.

Thanks for giving this track a listen! These boys have been my favorite band since the 80's...and it still makes me smile to see someone discover them. They are such a hidden gem in the music world, despite having a really loyal following. I assure you they are well worth catching live, there is nothing quite like them.

I think that H is well known and I also doubt that someone who likes Prog thinks that there is currently and in the last 30 years another more current and bigger band in the world progressive rock scene than Marillion. Marillion is so big that they don't need a record company to sell or to do their world tours.

Marillion are fantastic. This progressive rock band originated back in the 70s with a lead singer and songwriter, Fish. They had a falling out in the 80s and Steve Hogarth (seen here) took over vocals and also added some songwriting. Fans tend to remain divided, as they do the Peter and Phil versions of Genesis. Me, I've enjoyed both versions. Their new album, An Hour Before It's Dark, is absolutely amazing start to finish. Season End is also a good album. For a taste of the original lineup, try the albums A Script For a Jester's Tears, Misplaced Childhood, and Clutching At Straws. They have often been compared to Genesis, who are certainly an influence, but have actually developed their own sound over the years. Glad you've discovered them. Steve Rothery is amazing on guitar, Mark Kelly produces those incredible synth and piano moments, and Pete Trewavas provides the solid bass line. Pete also plays with Transatlantic.

Welcome to Marillion! You hear the details, so that is why you enjoy them, They're all about the details. One should listen to Marillion like one listens to classical music. The more you hear, the more you pick up, and the better it gets. Ultimately, they're about the music first. Labels, styles, popularity, fads are all just knock-on effects that may or may not happen. Just lose yourself in the music and take the journey. Ocean Cloud was a good song for you to get what the band is about. You've go 40+ years and 20+ albums or so to explore. I like "The Invisible Man" a lot. Play it loud with the lights off!

Love that you found Marillion. Wish I had the technology to record my first listening experience. 1986, at college in the Adirondacks Mountains of NY, I assembled my radio receiver, turntable, cassette player and speakers. Turning the dial to find radio stations there was nothing. I decided to put on my headphones to get a better listen. While slowly dialing the receiver I all of a sudden heard the most beautiful unique music....faint but there. Like out of this world. If it wasn't for the headphones it would never have happened. I was receiving a signal from 97.7 CHOM (Montreal Canada). The song was Marillion's Kayleigh released just in 1985. It was beautiful, and then it ended, on to another song. I was dumbfounded, and was left needing to hear more. In those days we did not have internet to pull up the song and re-listen to it over and over. The chances of hearing it again on the radio were slim....and I had classes to attend. Can't sit around in your dorm room waiting for the most beautiful song to re-appear on the radio. Spinning my wheels I decided to visit a new friend across the hall who was from the USA/Canada border town between our college and Montreal. I asked him if he had ever heard of Marillion. "Yes indeed" he said, "I have their latest album, would you like to borrow it?" THERE IS A GOD!!!!!!!! I memorized the entire album side A and B. In the next few weeks we made the 1.5 hour trip into Montreal so that I could purchase my own recording and several of their earlier albums. I've never looked back and have now seen them live 3 times. Two times in Syracuse, NY and the latest in Montreal for their "convention". My good friend from college attended the Montreal convention with me. We had a blast. I highly encourage you to attend one. You'll meet people from all over the world. I loved seeing your first reaction, priceless. 🙂

As a musician who loves this band, it's always a huge reward to see someone discover them. If the internet could provide one moment like this for every horrid thing that happens online, we'd be in a better place :) I discovered the band shortly after picking up a guitar, and you're spot on about the emotion in Hogarth's voice - we now live in a world of auto-tune and very, very forced expression. He's the opposite. To have a band this complex and gratifying on so many levels, and have a singer who eschews corrective tech for real delivery is a blessing. I don't know how many great bands are left, but I know they're still one of them.

Discovered them in '94 when I was 14, with Brave. Bought everything since. just found this vid, by far my most favourite band, they are all virtuosos of their instruments and never self indulge, instead constantly playing for the song , as a drummer i pay the most attention to Mosley, his drumming inspires me constantly with it being totally appropriate and never too much or too little, when Hogarth first joined the band I wasn't sure if it was right, after a few listens I became addicted to the unique and honest emotional performance that he gives, to even try singing along with any of his songs, you will soon find it takes much more than a singing voice to do it, you would have to be emotionally connected to even come close to his performance. Glad you liked it.

Welcome to the the world of Marillion, by far my favorite band of all time, surpassing Yes and Genesis. You have found a better way of life. The lead singer, Steve Hogarth, has a fascination with obsessions, and crafts amazing songs out of things to which other people would seldom give a second thought. Don Allum was an ocean rower who rowed a single man rowboat from the Canary Islands across the Atlantic Ocean to the new world, then back again to Europe. He was the first man to accomplish the round-trip in a single man boat. He did not die at sea, but it is likely that the strain of his trips, with the need to drink sea water to survive after his fresh water stores had ran out, damaged his internal organs and eventually caused his death. It is the voice of Mr. Allum you hear in samples at some point in this magnificent song, describing the perils inherent in his efforts. Hogarth has a vivid imagination. He was not interested in the feat. He was interested in the man, and imagined a childhood for Don which included being bullied by his gym teacher in front of the entire class for his scrawny build, and his resolve to prove that teacher, and the world, that he was tougher and stronger than anybody and capable of an almost inhuman physical effort. Hogarth goes further to portray Allum as a man seeking to be challenged, and a man happy to be alone. There's nobody to tell, but noone who doesn't listen. The song in most of its parts mimics the motion of the waves, or the eerie calm of a flat sea in the dead of night, with all the stars of the Milky Way laid out above you in the darkness of the mid-ocean. The lyrics are very straightforward. They describe how this man must have felt while rowing. It is Hogarth's gift to describe just about anything in terms of how it must have felt, while at the same time conveying that feeling to the listener with his lyrics accompanied by music performed by absolute masters of their instruments.
Some people find the music of Marillion to be a bit unsettling. They find their emotions kindled by it without warning. Others listeners seeking excitement rather than the triggering of deep feelings, resist the onset of any feelings, and declare it to be dreary and boring. I think you got "it" and were receptive of its intent and purpose.
Marillion has a catalog of 20 studio albums. There 2016 release, F.E.A.R. (an acronym for "fuck everyone and run"), won the award for Best Prog Album of the Year, quite an amazing feat for a group of guys who were all about 60 years old at the time. But never make the mistake of reacting to a studio version of any Marillion song from 1989 to date. Always, always, always, pick a live version. Hogarth transforms into the best male singer in popular music when performing before a live audience. His brilliance is for whatever reason not readily apparent on studio cuts. There latest album, "An Hour Before It's Dark" was officially released on March 4, 2022.
This video was recorded at a regular event called "Marillion Weekend" where the band comes and plays three completely different concerts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, and fans come from all over the world to participate. This one was from the Port Zelande, Holland, event. That's a park with lots of cottages for rent. Fans rent the cottages, as do the band members, and the concerts are held in the large tent-like structure on site that you see in the video. Setting up the show for three nights allows for a better light show and better live sound. The band has a fine crew of devoted light and sound technicians.

It's a great feeling to watch someone hearing a Marillion epic for the first time and loving it... a wonderful heartfelt reaction. Such an emotionally driven band and very much a part of my overly emotional life since the early 1980's... always there to provide catharsis.
Since no one appears to have mentioned about the song , here is a very brief explanation. It tells the true story of Don Alum who rowed across the Atlantic single-handed.... and then back again ! Unfortunately, due to losing his supplies from a number of capsizes he had to live on sea water and fish blood for part of the journey which caused major damage to an internal organ or two (liver, I think... if anyone knows better please help me out and comments below).

Between this, "Neverland", "When I Meet God", "The Great Escape", "Out of this World" and "Beyond You", Marillion made some of the most astounding emotional (neo)prog ever.
I keep forgetting how those drums around the ten-minute mark sound like Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", but then of course the whole song has a lot of Floydisms, as does "Neverland".
Re: your comment at 13:00, check out "Man of a Thousand Faces". That has a really amazing example of the vocal and instrument merging.

Great reaction. Wonderful appreciation of my favorite band They always bring out the tears. Gaza. live is a great experience. Their new album which is a stunner came out 3 weeks ago. Neo, being the new wave of prog after Genesis etc. Steve Hogarth took over from Fish on vocals in the late 80s. Some prefer the Fish era but I love both. Hogarth on vocals is my preference though They are the pioneers of crowd funding and have done so for over 20yrs now

Don Allum…rowed both ways across the Atlantic and on the return leg left Newfoundland and ended up making land in Southern Ireland having run out of water and food leaving him to eat fish and drink fish blood and sea water…both of which cost him his life as he ended up with kidney and liver failure i believe. Marillion…the band that keeps giving up masterful, emotional and relevant Progressive rock music for its army of dedicated fans…roll on Leicester and Lisbon 😍

Always nice to see young people join the club of Marillion fans. I enjoyed your reaction very much. Consider listening to the albums Afraid of Sunlight (one of my favorite songs is Out of this world), Gaza and F.E.A.R. I am quite certain, you'll enjoy them very much. For Out of this World I would watch the music video as well as live video. For everything else go for the live version. F.E.A.R. is also amazing on headphones with the studio album... There's an incredible live version of Happiness is the road you will certainly enjoy. And after that just listen to about everything they did and find many more absolutely fantastic songs...

Gaza and this one have to be two of the most interesting and relevant stories told in song format... and the music and arrangements just seamlessly match the sheer brilliance of the lyrics too... Cheers from Costa Rica

I'm curious to know if you've reacted to any more Marillion? They have over 40 years of brilliant music to their name, it would be a shame to stop at just one.
The Great Escape, Neverland, Gaza, Fantastic Place, and When I Meet God should definitely be on your list. The live versions of course

Welcome to Marillion. The greatest unknown band in history. Ocean Cloud is about Don Allum the first person to row across the Atlantic and back. About his thoughts, struggles, loneliness and ultimate triumph in the accomplishment.

The background to the song is a journey in itself. Musically it ebbs and flows. When your stranded at sea you can imagine how much time you have on your hands to ponder the universe and the important things in life while not knowing if you will survive. It's a modern masterpiece. I think many of Marillion songs are like that. Estonia, Out Of This World, Brave. Very haunting. World's Of Pain.
