I think that the trials must be completed before exploring a new island, or before you leave the island. There could also be a requirement from each of the trials that you must have beaten a certain gym leader(s). The final part of the trials are the battle with the kahunas, who could potentially give you the ability to travel to a new island.

My only two concerns are that the game could be considerably shorter & that these trails could be super mundane fetch quests. But I'm glad that they're finally mixing up the formula.

For the fetch quest one, there's a good chance the trial will just be finding those in a new dungeon. Pretty harmless, especially to those who want to get every item in every location... XD

For those of you who still remember the anime. The Island Challenge Trials in the Alola region seem EXACTLY like the Orange Archipelago Trials from the anime.

Anyone else realised that this game is exactly like the Orange isles ? it wasn't about Gyms there it was about doing stuff, the pokemon on Orange isles were different. It just seems like they are returning to the idea of the orange isles with better ideas and better execution. ( also if you watch pokemon 2000 the island people wear masks that look like that island protector pokemon.)
I'm so glad for the new changes, gym battles got stale. I don't remember jack SHIT of the gym leaders of X & Y, they were so forgettable, all they had going on was a somewhat unique design that you saw for about 10 minutes. I really hope they flesh out these characters and added personality to them you get to see as you play the game. like how Whitney cried when she lost and didn't want to give you a badge or Clair being too stubborn to give you one after you beat her. Or the many times you fought with Lance against team rocket only to fight him for position of Pokémon champion. I hope with the less number of characters that there will be more interaction with them and we can see them grow as the player grows as well.

While I agree the X and Y gyms were immensely forgettable, I don't think that's a fault of the gym structure. Kalos leaders were downright lazy in many respects (about half of the badges were literally named AFTER the type itself, and they recycle reward TMs, some of which are known reward TMs from other gyms, like Rock Tomb and Thunder bolt instead of giving unique TMs). What really did it for me was how uninvolved the leaders were in the world and the central plot. Unova leaders had an effect on their region and even pushed the plot. Kalos leaders did nothing of note. That, and creative gym puzzles, using types not used in the previous generation, *cough*Darkplease*cough* and integrating the characters INTO the plot can definitely break up the monotony/make us care about the gym leaders.
+paragon postcards I agree that more the problem doesn't lie solely on the gym leaders mechanic, but a reason why it was so stale was because it got repetitive and predictable. I love the final fight in black and white when the gym leaders back you up. When you talk to them there like "don't worry about us kid, you go on ahead. We aren't gym leaders for nothing HAHAHAHA" ( I think clay said that lol). Little things like that made the game more immersive and really heighten the stakes. I hope that these new island challenges are creative and fun and different from each other. ( I really hope it isn't like a bunch of quizzes and fighting buffed up Pokémon because that would be sad that THAT was new change in the game). Pokémon had always had the potential of having a great narrative and I think (hope🙏🙏) that this is the best step in the right direction.
I'm really hoping Sun and Moon pans out well on all fronts because Kalos was really lacking in many departments, especially story and character depth.

SHOFU!!! ONE OF THE TRIAL LEADERS WAS IN THE LEAKED STARTER ART!!! It's the one with the green hair! This basically confirms those starters because that leaked art came out A LONG ASS TIME AGO. Her name was Mallow. Go look at the leaked art of Littens final evolution. Like this up so Shofu can see.
I like the new twist of things by having to beat all the islands compared to all the gyms. Especially since you still have the common goal of the elite four and then the champion. I doubt that they'll do this for the next gen, but I'm all for it for sun and moon.

Black and White was more about story than collecting badges.
Black and White had the best stories game wise. Gen 5 had a phenomenal story and loads of content.
Gen 5 is the best in my opinion. Lots of content and a story that challenged the very meaning of Pokemon. It just felt different from the other games and it was great.

+kiiyuun Idk. But the trial leaders give u tests and quests. At the end of the trial, u face a Totem Pokemon (I count that as a wild battle since it has the wild battle remix). After u complete the trial, u start the grand trial, and that's when u fight the Island Kahuna

They seem too important to be extra things to do. Completing them gives you access to the next island so I'm certain they'll be part of the main story.

This is not your average Pokemon game and I'm hyped as hell for it!
On the Japanese website, they said that there are more than 4 captains. It would appear that there's one captain for each type and that's how how you get those type stones. If I had to guess, it's either a replacement or a side quest.
I like how all the Trial Captains are relatively in shape and then Sophocles (or whatever his name is) is just a blob with clothes. That makes him my favorite.
its probably gonna be still spread out like gyms. like the totem pokemon are the half way points on each island and then the kahunas are the end. then the specialists could be like the elite 4 and youll have to battle them all in the end

Hopefully these trials aren't piss easy like the gym leaders in X/Y and ORAS. I honestly don't mind them using the 8 gyms + Elite 4 and Champion every game but what makes it boring for me is the difficultly.

Only thing that was wrong about the leaks was the typing of Alola ninetails
and like it was still accurate in that there would be an alola variant. i think they might change ninetales to fire/fairy, which might of led to the leaker being confused
@shofu please point out that each captain of the fire, water, grass, and electric have pendants that match their element. They also resemble Pokémon that exist. Electric captain Sophocles has a Pikachu tail scarf, Grass captain has the same hair color and flower like Shaymin the grass legendary. The water captain headband resembles Empoleon's trident design upside down. Maybe the Pokémon I mentioned are their partners and they carry the Z stones necessary for the Z moves for electric, fire, water, and grass attacks.

I do remember a rumour that said the Alola League was still being formed during the events of the game, so the endgame content would include the different trial leaders and kahunas forming gyms.

Been saying this from the first announcement like this: look at this and Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs. They're taking more than a few hints from what they did there and damn is it smart. The location, the concept of Z-Moves (to an extent), the trials, etc.
Dude, Sophocles has a datalink cable to a gameboy for a freakin' shirt. That would have been a great foreshadowing to the Virtual Gameboy trading to the modern games, but he was revealed afterward weirdly. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Gold/Silver "Time Machine" invention from Sophocles though.

Considering Kukui explains the island challenge to you next to the location where you get your starter, this is the main storyline of the game. Based on the way they present it, Pokémon gyms as we know them will not be in the main storyline. Perhaps once we have finished the rites of passage we can travel to another region and challenge gym leaders.
Hey Shofu, if you go back to the video you put up on the 9th (titled Images Removed), and look at the section with Litten's final evolution laying on its back? next to it are two people. the first is more than likely ash... but the second one... Looks exactly like captain Mallow. That's a pretty odd coincidence.
I wonder if you can catch the totem pokemon and if there'll be a benefit to doing so.
my theory is, there will be the 4 island champions. they will have some quest or battle for you. this was revealed in the trailer. also, the fat guy I'd one too, even though there are only 4 islands. so, each island will have a stronger leader, making 8 "gym leaders"
It's going to be an official game for another Orange Islands type of arc. They're really focused on relating the anime and the game, which is pretty dope
My ultimate hope? The island trials are just part of the overlapping story, kind of like the Detective after content in Gen 6. You go and do these island challenges on your journey while fighting the 8 gyms. After the trials and gyms are done, you get the story climax, and then take on the Elite 4. BUT, I hope that when you become champion, you are actually, you know, the CHAMP, and have to defend your title against trainers who challenge you every so often.

I don't think the island trials will replace gyms seeing as there's only 4 islands, unless they do 2 for each island. Maybe it's like an extra challenge added to the main story where in order to go to the next island you'll have to beat the island trials in the current island.
I honestly can't wait. This is shaping up to be the best game so far.
Mallow was in the Chinese Starter leaks...she was seen next to the sleeping final evolution with Ash and Pikachu. Looks like not only is this leak confirmed to be real, but she looks to be the Misty/May/Dawn/Iris/etc. of the Gen 7 anime...and all I can say is WOO! ARCHER ROWLETT IS REAL!
Anybody noticing how the trial captains all have the same emblem on them. It's a flower shaped emblem. I can assume that you are handed a flower shaped capsule and with every challenge completed you get a petal.

I still don't think the gyms were replaced with these island challenge trials. Whenever we find out about the gyms and leaders are usually on the release day. The island trials are like the contests in RSE & DPPt. And Serebii called them small quests.
Wait. Now that I think about it, what if each island had 2 gyms??? To get to the other gyms you must defeat the captain and Kahuna of said island and move on to the next one. Four captains + two gyms = eight badges. And the Pokémon League with be held on a small secret island you'll have to surf to.
I doubt the Trials are similar to something like Contests. The website stated that you need to complete Trials on an Island in order to get access to the next Island, meaning it's almost certain it's a mandatory thing.
I think the Trials will be similar to Gyms mechanically and only different in concept.

Charlene Alyssa Ingram I think the Trials are the new Gyms though. In my opinion, this would be great because it would show Gamefreak is willing to be creative with their stories. And like I said, I think these Trials will act similar to Gyms from a mechanical standpoint, so that the essence of Gyms wouldn't be gone.

This reminds me so much of the Orange Islands from the TV show.
it has been confirmed that the four are not the only captains. Due to backgrounds in the japanese trailer being matched to locations on the alola map these four captains all are all on the same island, the second island called Akala island. As well as the official japanese site confirming that, "there are many more captains than the four shown". so, a popular theory is that there is a captain for each type, 4-5 per island, and upon their defeat they reward you with the z crystal for the specialized type. whether or not you actually battle the captains as part of the trials is still not clear.
I'm excited and glad they're experimenting but I feel like it's not very beginner-friendly.
I'm hoping Alola still has gyms or you have to beat the Kalos gyms because 4 main trial events/islands does make it seem like the game could be shorter than the usual 8 gym +elite 4 format (despite it being much more refreshing and unique).
Hopefully it's the main story that keeps us busy for the majority of the game this time. We haven't seen a villain team yet but I wouldn't mind them breaking the conventions there as well and instead of there being a villain team you could perhaps be an actual research assistant and help solve mysteries on evolution or something like that.
All in all I'm excited that Pokemon has realized how many possibilities they have open to them if they're willing to switch it up a little bit.
Honestly, I didn't care that much for sun & moon at all up untill yesterday's news. NOW. I AM HYPED. This sounds amazing, finally something really new and different from the other pokemon games! This is amazing!
I'm guessing that the pokemon riding will replace HMs. Gyms might be some extra challenge you can do, but I'm glad that this is a brand new take on becoming a stronger trainer.

I can't imagine a pokemon game without gyms those are the core of what the games are so while it's interesting that there could be no gyms, I think the island trials are more of a way of further progressing the game after fighting gyms on one of the four islands. out of all the news and leaks this is the one thing with very little details on it so I hope we hear more soon

tbh this is interesting, because this is still 8 total "badges" but it could also end up just being similar to the orange islands arc. If it is the latter it could have interesting implications with the anime because if its similar to the orange islands then serena might not be dumped in the trash for the new pokegirl

Maybe with the inclusion of Region exclusive Pokemon like Exeggcutor, it supports the theory that you can visit other regions. Regions that could have Gyms instead of trials. Especially since it has a lot to do with Z, maybe we can go back to X and Y.
Its just the anime's orange islands all over again. I remember ash knocking down cans with squirtle's water gun. But its ok to mix things up.
I love and will miss the Gym challenges but I am totally up for a new challenge, especially if i get to create the new gyms

Well considering that in the first Japanese trailer there was a part where the kid was in class and while he's being introduced behind him there are blacked out cutouts of people, 8 of them all designed like a person in Pokemon and four of them have names the other four names can't be seen
All of these information makes me think about us going back to Kalos and challenge the gyms there instead.
Than the chance is higher that ash is gonna win the kalos league because that is the last league probably

kahuna's sound more like elite four, since the point of gym leaders was to collect badges TO face the league which contain the elite four, and champion. So after defeating trials and captains, you'd face the kahuna. What's interesting is if you're able to travel to other islands before facing the kahuna? Will you have to defeat the kahuna of the startng isle to go to the next isle? Or are they going to make it so you have to beat all four of the captains, to then face all four of the kahuna's? hmm.
I agree with you though shofu, pokemon's formula definitely needed a change, and all this freshness is delicious. Wonder if the "next" game will cahnge it up further or if they will adopt this strat, or maybe go back to the original method, especially considering the next pokemon game will no doubt be on NX rather than 3ds.
