East Hastings CRACK Alleys - Vancouver Homeless Life on Downtown Eastside

  • Dirty Dark Dangerous Deadly Dared Devastated... Downtown Eastside Alleys.
The alley between Columbia & Carrall Streets south of East Hastings St. is a stretch of well-worn laneway locals call “Crack Alley.” The laneway is behind Overdose Prevention Society’s supervised injection site and the Downtown Eastside Street (DTES) Market.
Crack Alley is one of the busier alleys in the neighbourhood, filled with garbage, the stench of urine, rampant drug use and overdoses.
A walk through the Downtown Eastside around the four blocks bordering the intersection of East Hastings and Columbia Streets form the core of the Downtown Eastside, the epicentre of hell.
In fact, the locals here greet outsiders with a cheerful, “Welcome to hell”(physically/mentally), do you agree? Because the images along the alley look very dirty and scary.
The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions.

    I’ve slept on these streets
Imagine walking down there at night looking for a place to sleep
Where you won’t get wet, where you won’t get kicked out before morning
The scary part is realizing you’re alone
Like you have no one to call, no ones coming to help you
You’ll get beat up and robbed, people will just walk by you like you’re invisible
I used to have this nightmare that I was walking along a road way out in the middle of no where
And my feet hurt, I had no money or any way to get out of there, and there was no cars, no people, nothing
It was a feeling of desperation and fear
It’s when you’re at that weakest point that the predators will start targeting you
When I injected dope I’d pray that I wouldn’t wake up from it
I’m in treatment now in the lower mainland
Hope I never end up out there again but rent and food is so crazy expensive now, I don’t know how I’ll ever survive
Or why im even going through any of this just to be homeles again

Hang in there Davie Jay, first things first bro - get yourself clean and sober. Get multiple days, weeks and months clean one day at a time and you’ll start to feel better, a bit optimistic hopefully and then look at the situation with a clearer head. You know first hand how scary it is down there living that life, it sucks. But if you don’t pick up and stay clean, do things a little differently you may never have to sleep on those streets again man. It’s True, that you and many of us will always struggle to pay the ridiculous housing costs in the Lower Mainland but that’s no reason to give up dawg. Hang in there bud, it gets better slowly but surely

Your statement that you wished you wouldn't wake up is sad as is the state of despair you were in. I wish you all the best. You painted an accurate picture of the people who prey on those in despair. I don't know what the answer is but I don't think it's saving people from overdosing. It should be intervention earlier than that.

when I watch this video again I remember the RCMP document stating Canada will crash hard in the coming 5 years. If people think homelessness is bad now..... Well just want a few more years. Soon half the country will no longer be able to buy a home and those who own homes will hardly manage it! Single rooms will become the same as a one bedroom apartment. Cost of living will be pure enslavement of the human experience. One thing people should realize is this. In the dark ages people worked less and lived better!! Let that sink in.

Get out of your car to get the full effect of the smell, the conversations, the arguments, ppl fixing infront of you like it's nothing. You need the full affect if you want your teenagers and kids to get the message. Have a conversation with someone - there's always SOMEONE willing to tell you the story of how they got on the DTES.

Once you start actually living in that area, on the streets, the predators will come.

Money wasted as much as the money they spend to end up in that situation in the first place. I sound harsh and I guess I am but there is no solution. Maybe if education start in pre school it might sink in by the time people can get their hands on the drugs.

I think there's something wrong with the government esp. when I see the incumbent PM Trudeau,he's too busy to be a loyal lapdog to his master and cares not to his people, just hope for the best from faraway place, really sad when I see my pictures in Vancouver then and now 😢

As you walk through these alleys , as a believer in Gods word , a scripture comes to my mind, thy word is truth, wide is the road that leds to destruction, and many there be that find it, but narrow is the road that leads to life , the lords says we are to choose who we will serve , it’s a choice we make in our minds , this folks need the lord , He will show them the way , life and truth , but they must believe and then receive , call upon the name of the lord and ye shall be saved , as a home less person , I called upon the name of the lord , I admitted I was a dirty rotten sinner , I asked for forgiveness, I believed and then received and Christ changed me , I’m not homeless any more and work for a living, by the way I’m still a dirty rotten sinner, but saved by his great grace , the lord is in the business of changing life’s , no hope in the dope, it’s a road to destruction, death is at the end of the road , our lord bless u ,,,,,,,,,,

    • @suefrench8721
      @suefrench8721 Рік тому

The shame falls on the rest of us for not doing more. After billions of dollars wasted on interdiction that has done nothing, it's time we looked for another approach. It costs more than police wages but has proven to have a better success. Designated detox facilities, then designated treatment centers. Then counseling and follow-up in a similar treatment centre in house. Budget will be high, but the problem is not criminal but medical. One young man was taking fentanyl in Vancouver east side and was brought back with the anti-fentayl shot. He was brought back 2 more times in that day. On the fourth try of that day, he shot up again and died. It doesn't help to bring him back and then remove him to a controlled environment.

Ergo volunteering to help drug addicted people who, as another person has pointed out " deserve it" is futile. Instead address this problem as a reflection of societal ills that need to be righted, not just the band aid approach. Yes the volunteers are to be applauded for their humanity but it would be better to address each addict, homeless, and mentally ill person on a much more productive and humane level.

As far as I know, there's a mixed number (shelter-not shelter) of people here and some takes advantages of freebies, more like free room and board for low-enders. They are from the other provinces as well, but the closer one usually come more. I like to see in weeks to come when election campaigns kick in and what their promises are like.

Watch this space. Once the possession of hard drugs is legalized in Vancouver next year, there will be a flood of drug users arriving from all over Canada.

Just to summarize: You're asking homeless transients (some of whom may be reviewing this video and the comments) you're asking the homeless transients from Alberta to please do some financial accounting before moving to Vancity crack alleys.
      Ok, then.

Wow, ,that's a pretty bold statement of ignorance aimed at Albertans; Where exactly did u get your information?? The DTES was a fallen city of drug addicts, crime, poverty, prostitution & mental illness long before I was ever born & has nothing to do with Albertans moving there or in your words basically contributing or making the problem worse by basically free loading on the already homeless in the DTES. Seriously ??? where did u go to school ?? Reading your rant about Albertans is based solely on stupidity & lack of educational understanding of the problem. U can blame whoever u want but the fact of the matter is that this is a global, economic crisis the affects every part of the globe & is felt every where. I guess u don't get out much or u have nothing better to do with your time because u r obviously biased by your own opinions that have no basis of truth. or facts. If u want to change the situation or make a difference in your community, do something about it.......stop posting blame elsewhere & throwing accusations at people that don't deserve it !!!! ......Seriously it's people like u that make the problem worse, not better.
