- How to explain Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, E Hastings street. It's tough as rubber and complicated. Living on streets is harsh and sometimes the street people have to stay awake all night because so many things are going on in the dark.
As part of the City’s commitment to public safety, City's crew have removed an average of 2 tons of garbage from these sections on a daily basis in an effort to keep the area as clean and accessible as feasible for residents, businesses and those living on the street.
BUT, is there any improvement yet to see? Leave your reasonable comments, please.
So many mentally ill and physically disabled. It’s heartbreaking. I was born and raised here, went shopping there with my mom as a girls day out in the 60’s. We need to do better by these folks. Unfortunately it’s in almost every community now. And with the housing crisis it’s going to get worse. I think Edmonton does a better job of housing the homeless. Thank you for sharing this.
So shameful to sharing and sad to see that they are struggling, helpless , and unsupportive. More toxic drugs are on the streets/market causing extra OD and then physically/mentally ill then homeless. Not only in Vancouver, but Canada is now facing homeless crisis as inflation in groceries, housing/renting, and energy sectors.

But when A family of 4 or 5 has to have both parents working and many times lots of overtime and or one parent or the other also must work 2 jobs. My mentally ill brother spent 20 years on those streets. Every year I would go from Edmonton and make the trip to see how he was doing. What I saw down there is what you are seeing. These fellow Canadians are in dire need . Drugs, mental illness, alcoholism, poverty. They are someone's brother, sister, mom, dad, uncle, grand parents. With all of this comes a stench that takes days to get out of your nose. The only time I saw those streets power washed to help stop the stench and disease was when Adriane Clarkston walk on the streets and when the Olympics were on. My brother was not drug addicted , he was mentally ill. He died a year ago .
Thanks for all your words but very sad to hear your story. Hoping some days the politicians of all levels work together finding the solution for this crisis.

This is one notorious street. Its been like this forever. Its not everywhere.
they need to have a huge homeless shelter in the country, no drugs, no booze, you work for your meals. This country has gotten too damn soft. Now the city is losing its reputation and tax base, then no one wins. Plus the crime makes it tough to keep stores and tourists around. And real help for those who want it, with safe, government built affordable housing in the city for those who can and want to work, but need housing.

Not every homeless person takes drugs. Some homeless had jobs that didn't pay for thier housing. Not enough money.

You are so delusional, if you gave each homeless person down there that sit on their ass and does drugs all day 1 million dollars they are still going to end up dead or with the same issues.
The main people who deserve a chance are the ones who actually clean up after themselves and hold themselves accountable for their problems which 90% of them don’t.
They have the capacity to work up their position in society and make 30-40/hr cleaning porta potties without experience but choose to stay in their comfortable bubble where they can continue to abuse drugs through stealing and welfare.
A problem does not fix itself by throwing money at it
Throwing money at drug addicts solves nothing. They need to get their shit together and quit expecting everyone else to carry them through life. It’s not society’s fault they made bad life choices. Look at the messes they leave around clearly they have no respect for anybody or anything.

Hi there, this is why so many people don't want them to close to their homes. I live an hour and a half away from Vancouver. But we still have problems with the homeless. They have started living by the Vedder River and have been given the boot 1 time so far. They just moved about a block away from the spot. The amount of garbage and needles was just horrible. I have no problems with the homeless, but I don't want them rifling around my garage at 4 in the morning again.

Not only are the streets like this in Vancouver, it is all over Canada. Homelessness and the drug crisis exist in every community. Makes me so sad and we need policies and facilities put in place. Affordable houses. Rehabilitation facilities. All of it needs to put into place for these people.
The higher the amount of homeless people, the bigger the government's failure.
Don't blame Trudeau this was happening before his time. But government still to blame. This could get cleaned up and people would get help if they used the same effort as they did with covid messaging

@@volyanaliu7087 No it is not safe there at any time of the day. If you are lucky, you may only get chased out of there if you are walking. Most people drive through there if they want to view the area.

there is no affordable housing in Vancouver bc, if you can can handle living with 5 or 6 other people and have a decent space for your self then i congratulate you. if your on Income assistance and have a place to call home then im glad your warm and safe and off the brutal streets of Vancouver.

Since we got a new mayor (about a year), City's crew often clean these streets, so it's better sense of smell.
I live close to those streets, gotta walk through those streets everyday to get to work, the smell is disusting, it smells like pee, shit and drugs. Those guys live among the rats and of course there is cero
hygiene.
