    The actor who played as Wild Bill was good, and so funny. I think that fly was trying to steal the show though, saying to myself, "get out!" like that helped. LOL Nice that they included the audience in on it. Great video.

    What a coincidence you should post this today Rhetty,
    I’m bored from being in lockdown for 5 weeks now, so I decided to have a huge clean out of all my books on my library shelves. I came across 3 books about Deadwood and about Wild Bill, I thought I might read one again. No need to now, thanks for the great show.

      @@RhettyforHistory wondering if you can help me with this
      I just found a book while sorting through them and it’s called: Empire of the Summer Moon
      Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanche Tribe by S.C.Gwynne
      First of all, it looks completely brand new, I must have ordered it at the same time I ordered the Deadwood books, but I haven’t read it. I will now, after you educated me on him in one of your videos. I just went back and checked, it was your video Grave of Quanah Parker: The Last Comanche Chief.
      I also learnt about the Osage through your video on them (as I hadn’t heard of them before)
      The Comanche and the Osage are different tribes right ? So what does Empire of the Summer Moon and Killers of the Flower Moon mean ? Thanks Rhetty ( I just want to learn what it all means)

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 роки тому

      Yes they are completely different tribes or nations as they are called now. The Comanche were know as superb horsemen and warriors and their enemy had a lot of respect for them. They had a war chief in battle that could be different each time. They never really had an over all leader until the U.S. Government established on with Parker. They are still sort of that way. The Comanche were known as the Lord of the Plains. The Osage were absolutely huge. Many of them over 6ft in a time where other people were much smaller. They were in a different area than the Comanche and they did select tribal chief. Both of those books are very good and they will explain how those books are named from what I remember. For sure Killers of the Flower Moon does.

    It is me again Rhett. Deadwood... ive been to twice Instead of gambling I spent alot of time looking at the graves on cemetery hill it is very peaceful and serene above the noise of deadwood in the near distance which overlooks the town of Deadwood. I was most impressed with the large Chinese community they had in the 1800s. It had a very large china town. A lot of Chinese were shipped back to china after death so they could be buried on Chinese soil. but in particular, it wasn't wild bill and calamity jane that impressed me. It was the town of Deadwood museum. It has got interesting artefacts that were really amazing. I only live about 8 hours away from deadwood or the battle site of the little bighorn. I saw them both several times. I am only glad Rhett that you could share the same experience I had. Best wishes Tom YQR Regina Canada

      @@RhettyforHistory Yes it there main Museum it has three levels I think it use to be a armoury The battle of little big horn you will find interesting because the army markers are where they fell. You can actually see how crazy horse got the better of Custer. Taking the higher ground was a big mistake for the seventh Calvery. crazy horses men could sneak up real close because of the coulees. They were not seen till the last minute. They also used guns and rifles not bows and arrows. Something you didn't know is there was more than one Custer that died that day. So did his two brothers. Custer was a big narcissist Best wishes thanks for getting back to me. Tom YQR

      The music is certainly a nod to the old westerns on TV but it is not from any show or movie. This guy is really good and certainly knows the part as well as some other ones he does out on the Deadwood streets. I'm not sure if you have seen the series Deadwood or not but Colorado Charlie is in that. The series is gritty and vulgar so I have to warn you if you have not. I do know he is mentioned in some different books, shows and films. Most of the focus in Deadwood seems to go on Wild Bill or Calamity Jane though. That was a pretty good abbreviated history of Wild Bill. The accidental shooting of Special Deputy Marshal Mike Williams by Wild Bill in the streets of Abilene was very sad and had a lasting impact on his life. Wild Bill carried a matching pair of ivory handled Colt .36 caliber Navy revolvers tucked in his wasteband. He used to discharge his pistols and reload them each morning because the night air often caused the powder to become damp and that cylinder would misfire. The gun is loaded by placing the gun at half cock then by pouring a measured charge of powder into the ends of the cylinders. Next a round ball is placed at the mouth of the cylinder under the plunger, which lays under the barrel and plunged home. After all cylinders are loaded a small amount of grease is placed at the end of each cylinder to prevent chain fire. Chain fire occurs when a spark from one cylinder ignites the powder in one or more cylinders. This was the cause of more danger behind the gun than in front. The last step is to place a percussion cap on the nipple of each cylinder. Black powder is very corrosive and these guns required cleaning and oiling on regular basis to keep them reliable and from misfiring and often they did anyway.The 75 yard shot that Wild Bill made through Davis Tutts heart was remarkable because the ballistics of the black powder Colt Navy .36 is equivalent to a modern .380. The face to face gun fight between Davis Tutt and Wild Bill is one of the very few face to face gunfights in the old west. All too often people settled their differences by ambushes and shooting their foe in the back with a double barrel 10 guage. The brave hero facing down a mob of bad guys like Matt Dillon is Hollywood fantasy.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 роки тому +1

      You're right on the gunfights and even the one with Tutt is somewhat debated. Gunfights did happen but they were a lot different than Hollywood's version. But then again almost everything is. That's one of the things I'm worried about with Killers of the Flower Moon. Thank you for watching and filling us in on some more information on Hickok!

    Another interesting video Rhetty. I hope to visit Deadwood myself someday. I need to watch the Deadwood T.V. series. I wanna visit Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's gravesites while I'm there and there's another Wild west man named Seth Bullock buried there that I don't know alot about. Always wondered why Jack McCall shot Wild Bill Hickok. I read some say that he felt insulted after losing all his money to Wild Bill the day before and some claim that they think that he just wanted to be known as the man who killed Wild Bill Hickok. I kinda think that its the latter myself but that's just me.

      I hope you get to visit Deadwood some day it really is a great place to visit. Sturgis is near and don't forget to visit Poker Alice there. She was a couple videos ago but she was legendary. Jack killed Bill to avenge his brothers death. At least that is what he said. I will have a video talking about the three people you mentioned plus many more. It's going to take awhile to edit that one though. The Deadwood series and movie is good but it sort of distorts the truth pretty good. Many things are made up and not part of the story including characters, deaths etc. As a fair warning it is gritty and vulgar. Cuss words would have been said but it would have been different than what was in the show. Thank you for watching!

    I just came back from Sturgis and went to the #10. I ask the bartender about the chair, stating well the chair is fake if the real saloon burnt down. She claimed Calamity Jane took the chair after Wild Bill was shot, who knows if that true or not!!! LOL

      That's the thing. We will never know one way or another. But it's still a fun little thing to ponder about. Thank you for watching!

    The #10 backyard was located in Buffalo Gap SD, as of 1996, when I was there. BACKBAR....damn auto correct.

    James Butler Hickok "Wild Bill" hated show business. When he was recruited by Buffalo Bill, he would sometimes stay hidden behind the Curtain. And even shot the stage light out because it was too bright. You could say he wasn't fond of fame and all that came with it. Wild Bill was no Bully or Trouble maker. But he was no one you'd want to challenge either. He was as good with a knife as he was his pistols. But in his last couple years he started to develop vision problems and his accuracy was not as sharp.

    You can see all the historic places in about 3-4 hours or less, in Deadwood. Unless there is a concert, about the only thing to do there is gamble and drink! If you love to gamble and/or drink...great, but if you are looking for fun and adventure, you might want to skip Deadwood! Hell, even Kevin Costner sold his casino, he is getting old, and he's seldom seen around town anymore!

    He reaped what he sowed but his first death was a breeze compared to the second death. He will regret his way in life.
