  • Asani, an Aboriginal womens a cappella group from Edmonton, Alberta, present a stirring rendition of "O, Canada," re-imagined to reflect the myriad peoples who call Canada their homeland.
    The group Asani hails from Alberta, Canada. They are: Debbie Houle, Sarah Pocklington, and Sherryl Sewepagahan. Here, Asani performs the Canadian National Anthem in the groups unique style.
    Many cultures, ethnic identities, and languages flourish in Canada. French, English, Scottish, and Irish immigrants have maintained their cultural heritage across generations, as have Aboriginal peoples fiercely determined to preserve their ways of life in the wake of oppressive colonialism and its injustices. Recent American, Eastern and Northern European, and Asian immigrants also contribute to the cultural mosaic. "O, Canada," the Canadian national anthem, was originally written in French in 1880, and the English version was chosen as the country's official anthem in 1980.

    I get goose bumps any time I hear this version of Oh Canada. It's awesome! Somehow, the immensity and the brilliance of all that comprises Turtle Island is brought to life in this homage. I wish it were played a lot more often.

    I respect all cultures and their beliefs, but this rendering of Oh Canada is one of the worse. Every time I gotta listen to this, it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Please, just leave Oh Canada the way it's supposed to be sang.

      You should be ashamed of yourself because these are the original people who lived in Canada and not your British or French. As a German born I find you very discriminatory, bias, bigot and racist. I thought after WW2 we should have eliminated this kind of thinking not only in Germany but all over the world. It seems you as a Canadian have not learned anything from WW2 but I guess you think only us Germans should learned something. Well, you are wrong because the rest of the world should have learned something from WW2. The extermination of indigenous people everywhere is as wrong as the extermination of Jewish people.

      @@siggizippan8076 I guess when I say "I respect all cultures and their beliefs" makes me racist...you got a funny way of posting that. And wtf does this have to do with WW2? LOL. I'm saying Oh Canada was meant to be sang in one way, and one way only. Your opinion is wrong. Have a nice day.

      @@siggizippan8076 I dont understand your problem, this is Goldleader7`s opinion. He didnt hurt anyone or did he? And what does WWII has to do with this version of "Oh Canada"? I am German myself and im heavily offended that you even have to bring up this guilt trip crap from WWII. We all learned something out of it or else these events wouldve happened already again.
      As for myself i also prefer the original version.
      Have a good day

      I am sorry that you choose not to respect First Nations.
      If you look it up Oh Canada has been changed many times. Currently the ammendment that changes sons to "in all of us " command has passed.
      There are many multi-cultural and multi-lingual versions of it. Expressing love for Canada in the diversity that is Canada which surely includes First Nations.
      One in five Canadians is from elsewhere so there are versions that have more than the recognized official languages but all sing of their love of this land.
      How do you have a problem with that?
      Maybe if you look Norwegian enough you can apply for citizenship in our neighbour to the south doing a pretty effective job of imprisoning or deporting diversity. That way you only have to hear O Canada as sung for sports.
      WHy did you even listen to it if you don't like it?
      This is a beutiful expresssion of what was, what is, and what hopefully will be in this large land which we all share.

      Why?

    • @Gareethtw
      @Gareethtw 5 років тому

      Recgnizing those who were here long before us. Reconizing that our diverse land surely includes First Nations - I mean I combat hate on the internet so I see a lot of Canadians who are not saying to people go back to where you come from.
      It is a big country. We can share but by we I mean those who respect that the first beautiful bits of the cutural mosiac we define ourselves are were First Nations.
      The barrier to making and official third one is of course this is sung in other First Nations versions although I wuld expect that at some point an official multi-lingual one that includes some of those will happen.
      I mean you can write to your MP abou tit but as the Charter Rights would cover this and no one is claiming this is an official version as those are actually part of the Canada Act and chainging parts invoves a constitutional ammendment..
      If you don't want to respect others perhaps you are a poor fit for this land.

    • @Gareethtw
      @Gareethtw 5 років тому

      @@ryleepowers Which original. There are three official versions as far as the Canada Act goes but there have been many re-writes.
