Product Spotlight: Tyler Gun Works "Working" Custom Revolver

- A high-quality custom firearm isn't just for the rich folks, nor should it just sit in a display case. Steve and Caleb once again welcome special guest Bobby Tyler, proprietor of Tyler Custom Gun Works in Friona, Texas, who tells us about his new "working" custom single action revolver. The most important nexus between the shooter and a revolver is the grip. One of Bobby's favorite grip frame patterns is the Elmer Keith No. 5, which he has put on a lot of custom revolvers. But Keith No. 5 isn't perfect, and Bobby wanted to improve it. He conferred with master grip maker Ronnie Wells of RW Grip Frames. Ronnie produces a huge variety of grip shapes, many of them in brass or lightweight aluminum.
Ronnie did some tweaking on the Keith No. 5 to create a grip that's a little longer, with a rounded triggerguard, rounded edges on the butt, and a thinner backstrap that sits at a slightly different angle. Turns out this new grip is very, very comfortable for a lot of shooters. Now that he had the new grip design.....
Bobby and his crew started working on a new 4" barreled Ruger® Vaquero® with weight-reducing cuts in the recoil shield and loading gate area, a dovetail front sight by Andy Larsson of Skinner Sights, and of course the new Ronnie Wells grip frame. The result is a lightweight single-action revolver similar to a handful of beautifully crafted guns made by Hamilton Bowen in the 1990s. But the Bowen guns are scarce as hen's teeth today. The new Bow-Ty Express (Bowen-Tyler!) is meant to be a robust, reliable WORKING gun, one to be shot, used, and carried on a daily basis.
Some more features of the Bow-Ty Express: all sharp edges rounded off, Bisley hammer and trigger, Belt Mountain base pin, and black Micarta grips. Of course, it will have the full Tyler Gun Works action and accuracy packages, so it operates smooth as glass and racks up targets with neat, tight groups. Plus, each Bow-Ty Express will come with a custom-fitted holster. The production run will be around 60 to 90 guns. The new guns will probably hit the TGW website at about the same time, so keep an eye on their site and social media.

My interest in Single Action Revolvers began with a small article from American Handgunner.

I like Bobby's idea on the reshaped #5, but I frown on them being aluminum.
its a gun to be carried a lot and shot a little. not a range toy so weight makes a difference.
So many folks won't buy a aluminum grip but will gladly fly at 33,000 feet in a craft of 90 % the same material... the mainframe is steel. It will take ALOT of rounds.

Well since jet airliners fly at speeds faster than most handgun rounds, i see your point. But the difference in the acceleration probably causes faster wear. I don't know man you got me.
The one thing I would love on a single action would be to switch sides on the loading gate.
Elmer Keith is a legend for all times, but it's just a fact that he was a li'l guy. Not surprising that his custom grip frame turns out to be a bit short for a lot of folks.
Bobby Tyler is the real deal. He has tricked out my GP100 10 shot 22 S,L,LR. Tyler Gun Works does great cost effective hand engraving too.
First-class quality for sure, but you have to include a steel grip frame in the selection. Great video by the way!

I've always wanted a true 4" SAA, but have never found any company that makes them. I don't care for the 3 1/2", partly because the ejector rod is too short to fully eject the case.
Did this run happen? Tyler mentioned a 4" barrel. I'd like to see this frame finished and a 4" barrel.
I wonder if Tyler can customize the caliber of the pythons such as offering a.327 federal magnum short barreled python with night sights.
If you want to pay for it they can make it. but it won't be inexpensive.

I think all manufacturers should explain their products like this in a video and not leave it up to others to interpret the why.
This kinda stuff makes me want to make my own grips for my revolvers.
I have some experience with knife handles so I'm not going in totally clueless. But still, this is gonna be a challenge.
I have a couple of ideas for a sleek symmetrical shape and one for finger grooves so I just gotta give it a shot.
I wonder if it could be done in titanium in addition to aluminum.
Ronnie only offers brass and aluminum at this time.
The grip frames are cast, titanium would have to be machined. It would be very expensive.
