I’m subscribing!! I needed this greatly as I truly recognize after some thinking and reflection that I truly don’t know how to pray, nor do I know how to truly love Christ, and my neighbor. These are things I’ve been asking Our Lady to teach me how to do and it lead me here. God bless!!

Is charity, specifically, love of God? Charity is relationship with God specifically then? Love God first with all your heart mind and soul then your neighbour. I've learnt over the years that this order is actually necessary, I think. Anyone can love their mates. But when you see your own life is the life of God in you, (as I was given insight into one day - pure grace!) you stop hating yourself and start loving yourself because it's no longer `you the independent individual' you love but the God who lives in you and gives you your life. Life is now eternal and assured and you can afford to lose your life in this world because because your eternal life is here already within you. When I identify with myself as my own independent entity I live in anxiety and hate anyone who threatens this worldly life of mine because it's all I am. When I see it's God's own life in whom I act and live and have my being to quote St. Paul, my anxiety dissipates and I live in eternal light.
Why does God give me His own life, not once but every moment?
Pure gift. I have done nothing to deserve it. God gives me life for no other reason than pure love of me even before I ever existed. As scripture says He knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
What did I do to deserve to be born before I was born? Nothing of course, because I did not exist yet. My life therefore is pure gift from my parents. I have no inherent right to be alive in the first place. That’s why the fourth commandment tells us to honor our parents. It’s the image and likeness of honoring our ultimate parent, God the Father.
When I see this same life of God in my neighbour, I can now love my neighbor's life for the same reason I love my own life. It's the same life of God I love in both cases.
Well then, the life of God is in my enemy as well. So then when I take the hard road and `love my enemy,’ I usually discover they're a better person than me anyway. How humiliating right? I thought I was the good guy. Now it becomes easier to be humble.
Now my loves are properly ordered. If St Thomas is right and love means wishing the good of the other then the other's highest good is the life of God as it is my own highest good.
Now I get an inkling for what Jesus meant when he said those who lose their life for MY (Jesus') sake will find it.
Well then this is all insight but holding on to this in everyday life is a real.......well you know...a real struggle.
I fail this insight all the time (you know why don’t you give me wealth honor pleasure and power in this world God? I’m a good person!). But I know the insight is true and so I don’t give up. I get up and keep going because I know the struggle is worth it

What a great reflection, Tony. The Catechism defines charity as "the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God." So it's not exclusively love for God, but love of everyone for God's sake. In some sense it's God's love in us. Like you said, our life is actually the life of God in us. Through the great gift of charity we are able to love with His love. It's absolutely amazing!
Know of our prayers for you. God bless you!

I haven't listened to the podcast in a while, but I'd be interested in hearing how this intersects with the episode on "modes of prayer" (one of your first).
God bless and all Carmelite saints pray for us!
