Fr. Mike is my little brother !!! My heart always explodes with pride and joy when I listen to him talk about his deep faith and his joy. I am so blessed to be his sister 🥰
I am discerning a vocation to the Discalced Carmelites and just made my second visit to their monastery and met with Fr. Michael Joseph Paris. He is a wonderful priest, and I am excited to listen to this episode. Please keep me in your prayers as I discern my vocation.
I am also discerning O.C.D. nuns, actually i am making my second visit too, this saturday, so I am extremely thankful for this episode also :) Prayers for you!
This sent me down a deep dive into the Carmelite order after about an hour in, and I'm floored by how God is filling my heart! The way they pray, their commitment to our Lady, the total surrender, and their way of living and evangelizing; it all speaks to my soul. I'll be praying a novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel to see if God is calling me to a vocation in the Carmelite order. Please pray for me.
Read The Fire Within for a good start with Carmelite spirituality. It's one of the best books on prayer that you'll find. Radically changed my prayer life.
He probably wouldn't like me saying this, but Father Michael-Joseph is one of the most solid and uplifting priests I've ever worked with and every day I get to assist him is a pleasure. Honestly a great man, glad to see him getting recognition he probably doesn't want :)
I always appreciate when Matt throws in a comment about praying the rosary with his kids. It is not something that I do very often, although I would like to. And I am always inspired when he mentions it in. I appreciate how he doesn't sugarcoat it... It's tough to get kids to sit still and pray reverently, but I love how He and his family persevere and continue to do it. The beauty is in the imperfection, love it! This channel really is the best
Desde España este humilde Carmelita de sonrisa fácil ha transformado mi vida: he vuelto a la vida sacramental de un católico laico. Y todo por la espiritualidad carmelita y sus santos y como lo explican.
On a family trip to Colorado we ran across a Carmelite community of hermits called Nada. There was a supernatural sense of community without seeing a soul. We could feel their prayers. I looked up Carmelites near me and found a secular OCD carmel in my hometown. 7 years later, I made definitive promises in September.
As a Protestant I love his joy and zeal, and I laughed heartily during the bit about the “accomodation of scripture” because I appreciate his candour. 😅
Proud to be a part of parish which is run by the discalced carmelite monks, From my experience I can say that as an ex evangelical who's life has been converted by their preaching about the cross and about true repentance and especially of their devotion to the brown scapular which has led me to be the part of the brown scapular conferternity❤❤❤️😇
I’ve been a Secular Carmelite in California for 16 years and love the spirituality. Our community loves watching Fr. Paris on Carmelcast. Will be visiting his home in Holy Hill in August. I also love watching Matt and his podcasts. You both are doing so much good. Blessings to you both!
Thank you for featuring so many religious lately! The videos truly display how normal (and amazing and inspiring) these men and women are. God willing, an increase in vocations will result!
Fr. Michael Joseph is a blessing to the Carmelite community and always shares the joy of the faith. We are blessed to know him and glad that others are getting to hear him!
I'm so happy this interview finally happened! I am blessed to have Fr Michael Joseph near me and always love going to his talks and he's always very comforting and hospitable.
Matt, you are such a warm host, and your humor is delightful. I come to your channel to lift my heart. Fr Michael-Josef has so many meaningful and beautiful stories! What a treasure trove of history resides within you both! Thank you.
I discerned the OCD nuns in England & France. It remains the most treasured time of my life. St Therese is my confirmation saint too. We can plumb the depths of OCD spirituality our whole lives. God bless you Father 🙏
The Carmelite spiritual teachers seem to value metaphors as a means of communicating ideas, which is pretty striking and beautiful to me. St. Teresa's watering metaphors (bucket, waterwheel, irrigation channels, rain) for the different levels/ways of experiencing prayer was really beautiful to me the first time I encountered it. It also just blows my mind how St. Therese and St. Elizabeth of the Trinity could just sum up their vocations: to be love in the heart of the church and to be praise of his glory, respectively.
This is beautiful! I grew up praying the rosary every day and for a couple years I neglected it. When I came back to praying it every day I began praying it as if Our Lady was sitting right next to me hearing every word I was speaking. At that moment I realized the rosary and any structured prayer is meant to speak truth to our hearts. It's not so much about me speaking from the heart as much as receiving the truth of God contained in the meaning of the prayer and taking it into our hearts so that our hearts can be formed and transformed by it. This completely changed the way I pray any structured prayers, especially the Holy Mass. It seems to me structured prayers are gifts to be received, because they contain truths that God has revealed through scripture and His Church, whereas spontaneous prayer seems to be more a gift from our heart to God which derive from the truths that are contained in the structured prayers. Both are necessary. Glory to Jesus Christ!
@@CatherineBilot-rn2sb thank you! This helps me is sharing the depth of Rosary devotion, and to explain the true purpose of structured prayer to those sho scorn it.🕊️
I’m have listened to many episodes of Pints with Aquinas, many of them have being a tremendous blessing to my life and an enriching of my faith and knowledge, but this episode pierce me like hot knife on butter. Thank you to Friar Michael for everything you shared and how you imparted it, your meekness is provoking. And thank you Matt for your diligence in bringing valuable logs into the fire in such a natural and admirable way. Praise our Lord for what He is doing in you both and through you. 🙌🏼❤️🔥
Thank you for this great interview. Most devout Catholics I know have a devotion & love of the Scapular. Maybe because it is hidden (wearing under clothes), we don’t have awareness of just how many people are committed to it 🙏🏻
This interview has to be one of my favorites 😊 thank you it is perfect for advent. Always wear our scapulars especially when traveling. Doing a back country horse trip, it’s right next to the satellite communicator 👍🏼 My cow girl friends are used to seeing it pop out when trotting up hill trails. Thanks for this interview 👍🏼
I love this! Father Michael Joseph has been such a teacher for our family from the moment we came (and came back) to the Church (and I’m sure he doesn’t even know how blessed we feel by him 😅 mental note: share that with him in person!). One of the first talks that really stuck with me in our community was his talk on St John of the Cross, and our whole family has loved learning more about the Discalced Carmelite spirituality ever since. The Discalced Carmelites are such a blessing for us near Holy Hill and the surrounding area and I hope many more people come to know, love, and appreciate the gift we have. Thank you for having him on! Your show has been a blessing for someone new to all of this, and it’s great to see a guest who personally grew my walk in some way ❤
I went to Carmelite convent in Indonesia. They follow St. Therese Liseux as inspiration. There is a lot of nun who are a refugee from China and Vietnam as well.
St. Therese is the Patron Saint of A Baby's Breath. After reading Story of a Soul in Adoration was inspired to share Jesus in her little loving way. I have tried to incorporate the Carmelite principles into our organization.
So glad to see this! What I really want to see though is a conversation about literature (especially Dostoevsky) and theology between Fr. Marc Foley and Matt Fradd. Please make that happen!
Trust me, God makes sure that people who live alone know our shortcomings. Thank God in the long run, and it gives us an opportunity to offer up our suffering to Jesus to use as He wishes.
I was taught years ago that praying to manipulate God is magic. It is showing our selfishness and unwillingness to trust God's providence. This is why we need to earnestly from our hearts add your will be done. Surrendering to God is a key element in prayer.
I wonder if the reason he blesses more St. Benedict medals is that each medal must be blessed, whereas once a person is enrolled in the Scapular and they need a new one, it doesn't need to be blessed. At least that is what one Carmelite told me.

The plastic coating is very helpful for people who are allergic to wool.
What are the requirements along with wearing the Brown Scapular, recitation of the Little hours of the Blessed Mother?
It depends on the priest who enrolled you. Many will require recitation of the Little Office. My priest only requires daily Rosary.
Where can I buy just a basic brown scapular?
Go to your church and any priest can enroll you in the scapular, and they’ll give you the scapular they bless for free.
