Bicycling Bloomington Indiana And I Was Threatened To Be Killed!

- Cold bicycling adventure on Bloomington Indiana rail trail infrastructure. 22 degree start. Started at the Church street trailhead and headed south on the Limestone Greenway. Made it to the end and headed back north and headed up the Clear creek trail to Tapp road, then north on Weimer road. At Bloomfield road I headed in toward downtown Bloomington. At Adams street I made my way towards the B Line trail. At the trail head of the B line I heard someone yelling on the rail line that was parallel to the trail. As I continued on the trail there was a person screaming at me, demanding me to give them my boots or they would kill me. Fortunately I don't scare easily, but in hindsight I probably should have contacted authorities in case this person is actually dangerous. Also, if this person hadn't been so aggressive and just asked for help I had several packs of toe warmers in my frame bag for emergencies. Oh well, I wasn't about to actually put their threats to the test and get within reach to offer assistance. Anyway, I am looking forward to getting back up there in warmer weather and doing some more exploring. That area seems to have an abundance of bicycle infrastructure winding through what looks to be a beautiful town!
Better to get yelled at by crazies walking a RR track than by crazies behind the wheel.
Truth!
@@btp98wMy friend was mountain biking with a group of friends. They were driving on a country road back to their cars when a women pulled up next to them and started yelling crazy stuff and then drove into about six of them on purpose. They pressed charges but not much happens to her. She is obviously mentally unstable but she should have been dealt with. Stay safe.
@@mtadams2009 holy sh#t, that’s awful! Hopefully they’re all going to make a full recovery! Yeah, we’re all definitely at risk when riding on the roads these days. Sorry to hear about your friends. ✌️🍻
@@btp98w They all made a good recovery. They prosecuted the women and she was found guilty but not a lot happened to her because she is mentally ill. She has done other bad things in the past. For some reason she did not like people riding on the road. Take care and be careful
@@mtadams2009 terrible! Will they be able to sue her in civil court to recover any damages?
Unfortunately alot of Rail Trails go through dicey areas in every city. I've been surrounded by a group of kids once that stated they were going to "F" with me and only saved when a large running group came up the trail moments later and the oldest kid shook his head to the other kids to call it off. I once had a lady randomly yell that she was going to spit in my face as I rode by, etc... Kudos to you for riding in the cold. Once it gets below 40 I switch to hiking as I find the cold just penetrates my feet too much biking no matter how I bundle up.
Nice tip about the surplus shooter's mitts. I might look for a pair. Thanks! (And glad you survived that encounter!).
Thank you!
Unfortunately, loonies like you saw along the RR tracks are practically in every city . Glad you didn't let that spoil your ride. Stay alert and stay safe 👍
Appreciate it! ✌️Yep, you are correct on that(unfortunately) about those type’s being everywhere now… 😔
Bicycling and Bloomington, now that reminded me of the 1979 movie "Breaking Away", set in Bloomington.
Awesome movie! A classic!
The Quarry is gone, they filled it entirely in. Long epic rides through Lake Monroe, and Brown County are still there. Use to deliver papers to the main characters house as a kid on Lincoln. Grew up there, that use to be a nasty old run down rail yard and old run down rust belt brick buildings with most of the windows busted out from kids like me throwing rock, haha. Now it's swank and nice, farmer's markets, over priced apartments, other than the over priced apartments, most of the progress seems nicer. Good place for cycling though.
Those are some great trails! The separated bike lane was great too. Sorry about the methed out lunatic. At least there was a fence between you and them.
Nice biking infrastructure. Great town to ride!

Interesting. The scumbies aren't usually out as much in cold weather.
They know they've been swept under the rug and are still cold.
If you can, pretend you're not afraid and bring a five dollar bill with you for them.
@@cascade5682 Giving those bums money just encourages their bad behavior. It's better off to give them the finger and keep on going.
@@cascade5682i agree and disagree. Yes, on showing them kindness and that they are seen and heard.
But giving them the, its someone elses doings or not doings that got them there. Or the mindset that if someone else would do their job right and sweep the whole floor, even under their rugs, their lifes will change. May be more damaging to them.
Then the $5 just seems like it helps the giver feel like a good person, not that they aren't. But the helping aspect of it, favors the giver.
If your car was stuck in the ditch and someone stopped to help and all they did was stood there bitching about how the county should have plowed better. Put a Gallon of gas in your tank and went on with their day, did they really help you?
Thanks for not using a dizzying helmet cam. You are fortunate to have a choice of bike paths. I live in a city of 100,000 residents with no bike paths, only a white line separating bikes from car traffic. In other words, virtually no protection at all. Bike paths, both off- and on-street, would definitely increase the number of riders.
Thanks! Yeah I’m also not a fan of the helmet mounts. Found I also don’t like the views from chest mounted cameras. I’ve been using the Gumby mount by GoPro but just picked up the jaws mount a few days ago and am excited to try that. I’m actually from Louisville, which is about an hour and a half south of there and it sounds exactly like what you’re describing where you live. There are a few exceptions but mostly just painted lines and call it a day. Be safe! ✌️
Never interact with crazy. Ignore and keep moving. Ain’t worth the risk.
True that! ✌️
I'm in Michigan. We have some beautiful rail trails here. For access, many begin and end in urban areas that have seen better days. They have their share of street types, homeless, the misbegotten. We peddle faster than they run.
I have just two words in the way of suggestion: concealed carry!
Your touring cycling ability is impressive!
Thanks!
That was smart of you to say, you can also move your index finger back inside the glove!!! You seem like a good person, I am actually out on tour right now cycling up the West Coast of Florida, keep on, keepin on!!!
Thank you! I wish you the very best on your adventures! Stay safe!
I'm up in Carmel and never heard of this ride. Looks great. Will try it ASAP
YESSS!!! Enjoy your ride and stay safe!
Rode the b line to work at big woods in town there for a year. Loved the infrastructure in Bloomington. But only rode to work for the lunch shifts. A little sketchy on those trails at night!
Great town to ride but yeah, I can imagine it’s sketch after the sun sets! Stay safe!
I always carry when I ride. !!
Cool vid, followed your route on Google Earth with narrated intersection, road and trail info provided along the ride. I'm glad you got to keep your life and your boots too.
Indiana is definitely an amazing place with a ton of cool places to ride and things to see! Thanks for the kind words and for checking out the video! ✌️
Nice video thanks. How many miles of rail trails are there in Bloomington? Here is Southern Indiana they are working on a 60 mile trail from New Albany to Bedford. Hope it's done next year. Thx
Thanks! I’m not sure of total mileage unfortunately, but it’s a beautiful trail system. This particular day I only did 15 miles. I’m from the Louisville Kentucky area, so I’ve heard of the new trail Indiana is building and I’m extremely excited for this resource. The website for the monon south trail has a timeline that is easy to miss(I did and had to ask and was directed to the timeline via link) it is saying 2025/2026 for county/rural stretches of trail to be built… I’m hoping it’s a bit sooner as I not getting any younger. 😂 ✌️
first time I have ever seen a traffic circle on a bike trail.
I was on the trails and came across a 'naked' man in a pink mini tutu just the other day. The things you see.
😂 always an adventure on a bicycle! 🍻
I will be sure sure to stop by the surplus store 60 miles north from where I live and get those mittens that cover wrists too. My 30 sdegree bicycle ride this Thanksgiving day would be just fine!
The case for dual cameras.
great help for your heirs.
Well, you were just telling us about your boots. So nice that everyone wants them.
I mean they are pretty warm boots. 🤷♂️😂 🍻
Thanks for your video, I enjoyed it. I got to see the nicest rails to trails route that I have seen yet, and we have a pretty nice one here in Central Illinois, which will be even better when they complete a brand new bridge over the Illinois River with a 14 foot wide pedestrian lane that has a dedicated bike lane. How do you edit your GoPro videos, what software are you using?
Thanks for watching! I’m just using IMovie for editing right now. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing but I’m trying to learn something new each time I make a video. I’m not very tech savvy, but I’m trying to get there. ✌️
@@btp98w Cool, thanks, I'm considering used Filmora as I don't know anything either.
Haven’t heard of that one, I’ll check it out too. They’re all new to me who am I kidding. Oh, and I’ve been interested in a few of the routes in Illinois! I’d like to ride across the northern part of the state, from Chicago to the Mississippi River. Most of that would be rail trail or canal path. Someday…

It’s a beautiful trail system!

I so agree
Beautiful ride on a great-looking trail. It's sad there are nuts out there that make stupid threats. There are trails I won't ride in my area due to those who pose real threats to trail users.
Great trail. Need to come to Tucson. Great weather and occasional dead tweaker on the loop around the city😂
There are wool liners that goes with those gloves.
Yep.
I usually yell back "time to call your sponsor!"
From the other side of the fence? That's very creative.
I rode the Hilly Hundred decades ago. Fortunately, the world was a kinder, more gentle place back then. I have had stuff thrown at me while riding on an essentially vacant road (except for me and some yahoo)...I just don't get it.
For cold weather riding, my Pearl Izumi Lobster gloves were a God-send!
I’ve noticed since I transitioned back into biking that just the sight of a bicycle on a road triggers a lot of people. It’s weird.

Enjoyed your video. Glad you had no ice to contend with. Rode 24 miles in Ithaca NY yesterday. It is a great time of year to ride.
How long did your gopro batteries run in the cold?
Thanks for watching! Yeah, winters don’t last long in this neck of the woods, and they aren’t very wintery. 😂 I’m using the enduro batteries, and only used one battery to film these clips.

So just threaten someone else's life for their shoes? That's why there isn't an ounce of sympathy for these people.
May I ask what kind of helmet and hat you are wearing they seem to fit well and look warm.
No worries. The helmet is a Bern Allston. More a commuter style helmet but extremely comfortable. Also has the built in visor which is nice for keeping sun and rain out of your eyes. The hat underneath is an outdoor research hat. I apologize as I don’t know exactly what model but it has goretex to stop wind and has flaps that go over the ears and fits under my helmet nicely.
I’ve been on the Hilly 100 several times. It’s organized by the Bloomington Bicycle 🚲 Club. I didn’t know Bloomington had a bike trail. That’s great ‼️ How long is it? Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching! Ok, this is the second time someone has mentioned the hilly hundred, I’m going to have to google that. Yeah, Bloomington’s trail system is very nice and looks to be growing. I’m in hopes it will connect south to the Monon south trail in Bedford when that’s completed in a few years. Would make for a nice few day trip on a bike or by foot. I’m not sure of total mileage but the ride I did was only about 15 miles(??).
Have ridden in many countries of the world and have never experienced anything even remotely similar. Haven't ridden in the us since the last century, and didnt experience anything of the kind then. What the heck is going on over there...?

Literally, mentally ill wandering every city/town in the US and we just let them meander around until they get a weapon and start hurting people. Appreciate you sharing this reality.

Appreciate the comment. Aside from that little incident Bloomington is awesome! I’m very much looking forward to going back to do more riding and exploring. If you’re looking to get out but feel unsafe, purchase a bottle of bear spray from an REI or Amazon. It’s non lethal but works well for 2 legged animals as well as 4 legged. Maybe she fell and busted hus butt because that's what she needs... Great video!
Hey, thanks very much! Yes, the trails system around Bloomington is fantastic! Actually Indiana is really growing their rail trail inventory, unfortunately for now the majority of the rail trails are in the center of the state which is a bit of s drive for me. There is currently under construction a 57 mile point to point trail that will go north out of new Albany Indiana that I am stoked to explore! Unfortunately that’s gonna be s few more years until it’ll be ready for use, but it’s at least on the way. Southern Illinois! Yep, I’ve been wanting to check out the Tunnel Hill Trail for several years! Is it solely worth the drive from Louisville Kentucky do you think?
I've seen "guys" trolling for a date wearing tiny shorts with much hanging out.

Had kids stand behind an iron rail fence throwing bricks at bikes and dropping them from overpass on Dallas bike trails.

Stuff regularly tossed from trucks. "hey you get off my road"
PD calls bikers here, "Rolling Victims", so the put $10 m into an artsy BS bike bridge going from a homeless camp to a casket store, with a ramp that was used by a car in the first week.
Hi ho.
I stopped riding the rail trails right around 2017. Why? Maybe it's kinda spooky, but I just had an inkling that things were changing in the wrong direction. Because of this, I quit riding my bicycle and decided it'd be safer to just stay home. There are way too many crazy drivers and just crazy people in general. Nobody has any respect for anyone, and too many people are looking for a fight. It's nuts. Yes, I'm gonna stay home. 😔
I bought an excercise bike and ride at home. One too many close calls on city streets.
I saw blue sky: I didn’t think that occurred in Indiana from November until mid-April (it sure didn’t that awful winter I spent there).

Well, before you make a mass generalization, here in Colorado, the Governor signed a law a year or two ago that said bicyclists can treat stop signs as yield signs in certain circumstances.
One of my pet peeves is when drivers don't stop at stop signs. I see this regularly and have almost been killed because of it.

If someone says “you’re f’n dead” in an aggressive manner that’s a death threat. Especially if that person could be on drugs, they’re entirely capable of killing. We are a county that is an ugly combination of crazy and cruel. If I was barefoot on a 20° farenheit winter day in Bloomington I would probably be slinging some murderous vocalizations myself. I am not suggesting that the gentleman was in anyway culpable for the loonie lady's frostbitten toes nor could he balance her brain chemistry or heal her psychic lessions. But we are all responsible for allowing our most damaged citizens to suffer the punishment of absolute poverty and predatory profit driven policing. What a dystopia our fecklessness has wrought.

Since I could be wrong and / or lacking important information, feel free to give it to me on the chin.

The camera lens setting in the GoPro also makes things look a bit faster but it’s mainly due to the stabilization.

Some folks suffer from ID-10-T syndrome...
Indiana is horrible for bicyclists.
I actually go there because it’s so much better to ride there than Kentucky… 😂
No it isn’t! There are a lot of biking trails here.
Yet another cyclist who doesn't know the meaning of STOP. Yes, I know it's a pain, but if we don't adhere to the law we can't expect motorist to comply either.
Not even noticeable slowing
And we wonder why they think we're jerks.
That's because many times we are. I've been an avid cyclist since the 1970s and rode my first bike in the late 1950's, so I speak with quite a bit of experience. I applaud the fact that Midwest Meanderer is riding on bikes trails, something I almost exclusively do myself. The one I ride on is an old railroad bed and it intersects several local roadways, some of them major connectors. Cyclists (and pedestrians) in my area are under the mistaken impression that they have the right-of-way and expect cars to stop for THEM. That's only the case if they are already in the crosswalk when a car approaches, then the car has to yield. Others than that, they are required by law to give way to cars and only enter the crosswalk after they pass. However, cyclists, especially those who don't want to unclip, routinely ignore the stop signs and expect cars to let them pass. In my state, bikes are considered motor vehicles and have to comply with all traffic laws. Can you imagine every motorist ignoring stop signs like this UA-camr did? While most of us have been guilty of not coming to a full stop at a stop sign, few of us just blow through stop signs. As a police officer, I gave more than one citation to a dumbfounded cyclist who ignored the traffic laws. Believe it or not, I once wrote a ticket to a cyclist after a head on collision with another cyclist because he was going the wrong way on a divided highway. I'm not a safety zealot but c'mon!
