"What if Link was there for someone at like... the exact moment they needed him to be there." I know it was a joke, a gag, a funny goof - but... this is defo one of things I love about Majora's Mask.
Not only that but you can tell, from a completionist run especially, that Link actually cares about helping them. A lot of the time Link has to get to know the person's whole life, their interests, daily routine, everything about them, to help them out. Link becomes everyone's best friend to come and help them.
@@Midnight_Rein The best game design is self evident: if YOU care about the NPCs, and start doing things for them, then the attitudes of the NPCs towards your character reflect that. Because YOU are the character! And from what I remember, MM does that a lot.
This was less of an “it's funny because it's ridiculous” joke, and more of an “it's funny because it HAD to have really happened” joke. It's weird how the human brain can sometimes find humor in a situation becoming jarringly serious.
Majora's mask story definitely hinges on a balanced level of unfortunate and fortunate fates which are highlighted with quotes such as "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" to "Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever... Whether a parting be forever or merely for a short time... That is up to you." The message of this game is that no matter how bad things get in life there is always a way to try to make the best of it. Nothing last forever so enjoy what you can with the little time you are given. Majora's mask also relays a message that even in most bleak moments where there is hope even if the light at the end of the tunnel seems unreachable. It is a great concept that goes beyond the game itself and in a strange way it becomes a valuable life lesson.
I remember doing this in like 17 hours when 3D came out. If swimming didn’t become much more difficult in my opinion. I should have been able to shave this time a bit. Great game. Hoping it and Ocarina get put on Switch.
Hi MrsDizarky, No I think they were describing the side quests as they are all about helping people especially as they would all be at specific times Hope that helps Thanks Simon
Probably the saddest part of the game is the end when link goes back into the lost woods alone looking for Navi which the previous game explained that anyone who enters the lost woods without a fairy to guide them ends up being lost forever becoming a skull kid or stalfos. There's always been speculation about what actually happened to Link or if it was even real to begin with as the somber tone of the Song of Healing has a lot to do with the acceptance of death and moving on, which is a process of healing through the stages of grief. The Irony being Link was always there for people but ended up alone in the Lost Woods.
Well in Twilight Princess, the Hero’s Shade was the Hero of Time (i forget if it was confirmed in the game or in the official lore book) He says he never got to pass on his techniques, and he seems rather visually similar to a stalfos, so...
Problem with this: Link received the Great Deku Tree's blessing when his mother brought him into the woods, which allowed Link to live there without the need of a fairy. And that blessing persisted after the Tree's death.
@@NEETKitten Okay, hear me out first, but are you sure it lasted? Link had a fairy when the Great Deku Tree died so the blessing didn't need to be there. And I realize that this isn't confirmed, but one fan theory is that Link is dead in Majora's Mask, so if he is, it would explain why he didn't need a fairy while in the Lost Woods. I mean, looking at it from the perspective of the Zelda Timeline, Link being dead doesn't make sense and especially not when considering that Twilight Princess Link is the descendent of Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask Link (I mean unless...). We don't know how long it takes for the Lost Woods to turn people into Skull Children or Stalfos or whatever they become, so maybe Link was in the process of becoming one, ended up in Termina (which isn't the Lost Woods so the curse wouldn't apply), saved Termina, and then after leaving becomes the Hero's Shade (who looks like a Stalfos). Sorry for this being so long, I just had an idea and ended up writing way too much.
A slightly nerdy fact, but the Song of Healing is written in what's called the Lydian Mode. When a lot of people hear music they associate the sound of Major chords as being happy ('Walking On Sunshine', 'Lovely Day', 'Jump' etc), and Minor chords being sad ('Thrill is Gone', Ain't No Sunshine', 'Stan' etc). But rarely is music this black and white, and many people compose songs in Modes, which are variation of Major and Minor scales. The Lydian Mode that 'Song of Healing' is written in is a Major Mode, but the 4th note of that scale (the first note you hear in 'Song of Healing') is actually unusual within a normal Major song, making it Lydian. This also means that everytime we come to that first chord there's only a partial resolution in sound, so the song never quite resolves. This is how I think the track musically has this beautiful sombre and melancholic feel, it's not quite downright depressing, but it's also not quite happy, leaving you in this eerie middle-ground that is forever cycling without resolve. Super music geek stuff, but I've loved this song all my life and when I teach music harmony it's one of my go to songs for helping me expressing how music can be so much more than black and white emotion.
That's actually really cool tho. I love going into comments and seeing people dissect songs and explain why the song sounds the way it does, if that makes sense. It just really makes me appreciate the work that goes into these soundtracks, and appreciating the soundtrack helps me appreciate the game overall.
Thanks dude. I have a lot of fun trying to imitate my favorite songs on the few instruments I have, and checking out in-depth music videos, but I don't understand shit of what's going on lol. Surprisingly I did make sense of what you wrote so it was fun to learn something new
My god, what a masterpiece this game is. There has to be a reason why everyone loves this game I thought, and they didn't lie. Zelda Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
@@tfff2258 I sadly only played the remake, never had a chance to play the original. Either way I love this game to pieces and will be just as excited for another remake of it, if one ever comes out again.
This review made me realize something. My dad passed away in september 1999. I was 12. We shared the love of Zelda games, so much so that when our original pre order of OoT was sold out, he went out of state to find another copy(he had cancer at this point so he knew his time was limited). Majoras mask was the first zelda game released after he was gone. I didnt realize at the time how dark and emotional it was due to my own feelings. But after watching this review and hearing "They realize that a union, however brief, is more valuable than dying alone." really hit my heart and brought me back to that time of grief and healing. I will cherish this review more than you will know. Thank you.
Everyone's in this game. Darkness, depressing story, very emotional moments, young link, ocarina of time assets, a mask, gorons , a crazy moon , everybody
My mother passed away on the 14th of January... I had to watch her decline for the last two years, from cancer. This video helps me more than you know. Thank you, Jirard, from the bottom of my heart. It means a lot
"Instead of making the game bigger, they balled up Ocarina's design and rolled it down an unsettling rabbit hole." I just really love that line. So true. I always assume the clever quips are Jerard, but regardless - - whoever wrote that line - - awesome.
Absolutely. It always mde my heart ache. But, in a sense, it's a much happier ending to know that despite his sadness, he got to feel some joy in helping Link with the mask of scents, playing like he used to with his kid, and then at the end being able to see his son and grieve so he could later move on without continuing to wonder where his son went. Technically he could even now take his son somewhere for burial to show proper respect for his passing.
That’s the gut punch reality of the game, and one of the prevailing themes of MM. But never forget that while Link is too far removed for him to help the poor soul of the Butler’s son, you help Darmani move on as a ghost, helping him find acceptance when his soul is tormented by his failure, then you help Mikau come to terms with his own mortality in his last moments, helping him find peace with his dying breath, and, finally, he saves Pamela’s father, finally breaking the cycle of death, and in a way, redeeming himself as a hero, because though he “Saved Hyrule”, he still was responsible for the deaths of everyone in Castle Town, something that, while fixed, might have tormented him up to that point.
For Woodfall, Snowhead and the Great Bay, Link takes on the role of someone he couldn't save; in Ikana, everyone was either long dead or still alive when Link got there, so, while he can, and does, gain masks, he doesn't get a true transformation there. A small blessing in the midst of despair.
THANK YOU for talking about Chopin, I'm a pianist and he is an AMAZING musician... His life's story is tragic and beautiful and his music is the same. Thanks again gerard. You took me back
@@hyperspace2752 I actually loved eternal sonata, not a lot of people got the chance to play that but I played it a couple times and loved every second of it. Thank you for the great tip! I played it when it came out years and years ago and it's where I learned a lot about Chopin in the beginning.
The fate might be terrible But just like a road trip Its not the destination that matters Its the journey And my god this game is a (weird but) incredible journey
Dang, my favorite game of all time. This game is honestly a cinematic masterpiece. I’ve 100% it several times and I love it more and more after every play through. I played it during a pretty difficult time in school and didn’t really have any friends, but despite getting kinda bullied, this game helped me. Honestly, I cried when I first finished this game, and had goosebumps everywhere. I’m really happy to see you cover this game once again, as this game honestly means so much to me.
Majora's Mask helped me cope with my grandfather's death when I was younger. The upscale port to the 3ds was everything I wished for. I'm hoping someday for a rerelease for the Switch to be honest. This game was so influential, one of my first tattoos was skull kid. Also, the song of storms is pure fire.
@@psychokirby985 I've seen! It's cool that at least the n64 version has been ported most certainly. Maybe someday we'll get a full remaster (not remake) of MM
Having one of those days where I just don't wanna get out of bed and not talk or look at anyone. But waking up and seeing this first thing makes me wanna get up and go finish ocarina with my daughter who I've been waiting 10 years for her to get brave and smart enough to beat it on her own. She started it 3 weeks ago and she's beat the water temple on her own, so we can get started on majoras mask. Thanks song of healing ad thanks jirard
Times are tough to say the least. The world is what it is. Yet it's nice to remember some of the good things in it. Keep pushing forward so you can experience even more with your daughter.
I beated the Water Temple the same day, the boss kinda sucks lmao. Overall, i like the dungeon very much, one of my favorites. Without counting the 3DS remakes, Twilight Princess is so much better as a game lol.
i really appreciate this balanced review of 3D remake vs original. I've only had the opportunity to play the 3D version, and it always made me a bit sad that every time I heard someone try it or talk about it online it was about how terrible the remake is and how perfect the original was. It's nice to hear there are pros and cons to both, as is true with pretty much everything haha
Jirard, it was truly beautiful the way you spoke of the song of healing. On the first of this year, I lost use of my legs from an accident. But instead of ever thinking of how many things I wouldn't be able to do, I only thought of how to do things I love differently. And that sentiment has changed everyone around me, showing sorrow is permanent, it's another single step as we keep moving forward. Thank you.
@@steviecomebacks5541 I'm glad you laughed at that! I wasn't sure how it was gonna go, Feel free to use/adapt that dino gag, it's one of my finer jokes :)
@@bastienlafleur5838 I mean sharks are clever creatures and zoras I imagine is what a shark would be like if it were bipedal. I'd imagine them as pretty advanced honestly.
@@L33PL4Y "saving system is completely fine" In Ocarina of Time you can save directly with the menu, same of A Link to the Past in 1990, in Majora's Mask you can't do this on the N64 who knows why, maybe for the sake of padding.
@@saricubra2867 ...You clearly don't know anything about the difficulty of programming. Majora's time/day system was too complex at the time for a standard save feature. LttP and OoT weren't anywhere near as complex or advanced, so they had very simple save systems because the game systems themselves were very simple.
Literally my only complaint for the 3D version. Goht feels especially weird because you could beat him with just Goron Link in the original, but now you need to switch.
Same. The second I saw that happen on Odolwa, I was enraged. And worse yet is how they used the eyeballs to force you to beat the boss in a specific way. It used to be that you could beat Odolwa with bombs or arrows or sword and not even use the Deku. But the 3D version requires you to stun him with the Deku. Same issue for having to switch back to human Link with Goht and the second half of the Twinmold fight. I heavily regret buying MM3D as I sincerely doubt I will ever touch it again. First time I have ever literally thrown a controller (or console) in anger and frustration was that very Twinmold fight, and I'd really rather not experience that ever again.
Majoras Mask is a game that has grown on me over the years. I wasn’t a fan at first, but learned to appreciate and admire it over time as I got older. Has some real good stuff.
@@bastienlafleur5838 Definitely unrelated to what I was referring to, LoL... but interesting thoughts tho. The lore of Zelda games gets SUPER deep overall. Lots of things to be inferred and theorized.
Majora's Mask will always be a mixed bag for me, a rushed game that still has good things and others that are really bad (saving system and only 4 dungeons, at least far better than those from Breath of The Wild lmao).
@@saricubra2867 I use to be VERY against the time management of Majoras Mask back in the day, because I was a huge fan of Ocarina of Time. But it's grown on me over time and I've come to "get it" more over the years. Makes a lot more sense to me now than it did when I first played.
I’ll never understand why people religiously tear apart the remake so much to the point that some call it unplayable. There are reasons to play the original over the remake and vice versa, but as far as remakes go it’s actually really good and high effort. There are a lot of terrible remakes out there and I don’t think this is really one of them.
I’d call the changing of the boss fights by adding huge eye weak points a big strike against the remake. It takes away the player’s autonomy of fighting the bosses however you like (like with the Goht fight you can chase it as a Goron or stand in one spot and take pot shots at it). Not to mention it’s just extra padding to have to wait for a specific weak spot to appear versus just being able to attack the boss directly.
Strong disagree and I hate that this is seemingly a popular opinion now. The revamped fights are so much more interesting to me. The original Twinmold is 45 seconds of mashing the sword and nothing more... What a disrespectful conclusion to the best Zelda dungeon of all time. The new Twinmold fight is a multi-phase epic worthy of that honor. The remake integrates masks into the battles perfectly; in the original, they were useless...after a dungeon in which you spent the whole time using them. And sure, you could hit the bosses with any item in the original, but what would the point be of using anything but the sword? Pointless, weaker options are hardly enticing. The only thing I can say in defense of the original bosses is they are more "unique to Zelda" for not really having weakpoints/the whole boss itself being a weakpoint. But uniqueness in the series does not a good fight make. E: Oh, and also, Fierce Deity Link not being able to wail on all the bosses anymore because of their changes is also a point for the original. So there's that (but it's still no contest to me).
@@IonSquared I suppose the point of contention is that the original had more ways of fighting bosses while the remake’s bosses were more restrictive but also more structured (they don’t have ways of being cheesed). Having only played the remake I don’t think the weak points are that bad but I could imagine odolwa being more fun to fight. And hey, the bosses being more challenging overall works with the game’s vision of being an intentionally challenging game.
My favorite part about these completionist videos is when they cover a game like this that's close to my heart. I love being able to watch other people put into words why the game is special. I'm able to take what I love about it and recognize things I didn't see originally and it just adds up to make the game even more loveable. Thanks guys!
I always found kind of awkward to use in places like great bay temple and when trying to do the dolphin jumps for rings in tue beaver minigame. Really the only place I didn’t find that awkward was from swimming from the ocean lab to the pirate fortress. With 3ds version, yeah I don’t like the changes to make the original speed part of the magic barrier, but I felt like I had better control due to using the circle pad causing me to not have those same problems.
It's absolutely lovely when used in large areas where you have a lot of room to maneuver, but in tight spaces like the Great Bay Temple it becomes really unwieldy and hard to get a hang of.
@@silverwolfgamer4100 Sure he could do that but if its too hard he doesn't have to i haven't beat all the mini games I do remember that gliding gorilla mini game lol and surfing on a bus
It makes total sense why this would be such a good completion game for the completionist. To do that, you have to do all these sidequests and collect all the masks, and along the way of doing that you connect with all these people on such a deep and interesting level. Plus you get one of the most badass completion bonuses ever in the form of the Fierce Deity's Mask.
@@thenintendogamer1542 For me it's like a survival horror game where the thrills and suspense comes from being on the clock all the time. Tho now days I have done it so many times I just get the enjoyment from the atmosphere in the dungeons. It also helps that the rewards for the stray fairies are really good and worth the time.
You almost make me cry with the narrative of what Majora's mask truly is. I never really love it as many people do. But I'm glad that i can truly understand what it is to others. Amazing review.
Notice he's looking away from the camera, dressed up nicely to distract attention from the bottle underneath his desk, reminiscing about the most somber, depressing game in the Zelda series.
"how was nintendo able to deliver on this herculean task?" - by reusing the same engine - i don't know why they don't do this more often - every new console zelda doesn't have to be built on a completely new engine
As a kid when I got the 64 my dad picked up OOT for me and since I was to young and didn’t know how to play it. I watched my older cousin beat it. It was a great memory so I promised myself that the next Zelda game that comes out I will beat it fully and oh boy I didn’t know what I got myself into when My dad picked up Majora’s mask. I remember when I started it how scared I was for each and every turn the game took but even though I was scared and there were times I had to take a break because it got to heavy for my young child mind I kept pushing through. As a kid I felt I had an obligation to help all these people and I would genuinely get sad when I had to use the song of time. When I finally completed it and received the FD mask I was so happy I legit felt that everything I went through was worth it. This game will always hold a special place in my heart and every time I look back at it I smile because it’s something I will never experience again but a memory I will never forget.
I really want to see the transformation masks return in Breath of the Wild 2. As a LoZ mechanic it’s relatively unique and exploring the environments of Hyrule as races best suited to them, Goron on Death Mountain, Rito in the sky, Zora in the rivers, lakes and ocean, would add a level of immersion while opening up more of the already expansive Hyrule that’s in the original game.
I loved the Goron mask, and all the characters and the fact that Link saves every single one twice, for he saves them all personally, fixing or at least helping with all their problems, and acing all their lives by saving the world! I love this game so much because of the characters, they genuinely tug at your heartstrings and make you want to save them, and I am not sure any other game has ever made me feel more like a hero when you go about saving them all. Thanks for this video Jirard! It is so well produced and it has so much emotion in it just what majorah’s mask deserves.
Honestly this game is on a whole different level...Like its story transcends time itself. I myself played through the game when I was younger but didn't understand half the despair hiding in this game but growing up and replaying it recently shows just how grim this game really was. I loved ocarina of time more when i was younger but now majoras mask is definitely my favorite of all time.
This is my favorite Zelda games, and one of my favorite games of all time. I see more and more depth each time I play. It's a masterpiece. Astral Observatory and Song of Healing are some of my favorite songs in all of gaming. And what a great perspective on Song of Healing. Another great video. Keep it up, Jirard!
This is my absolute favorite Zelda game, and by extension, one of my favorite games of all time. This is the game with the most beautiful side quests ever. You actually do these quests because you actually care for the Npcs. You get to know their stories and their pasts, and you do your best to do something good for them before the world ends. The plot of this game is very sad and ominous, and the atmosphere is fantastic. I love the fact Termina is basically an alternate dimension of Hyrule, with many characters resembling the ones you already know and love. I love the gameplay diversity given by the mask system. I love getting all the masks. I love the dungeons and their complexity. And, as Jirard himself said, I will never finish this game without completing it 100%, because that’s the true nature of the game. I always 100% when I replay it and I will always do it.
I had actually beat the 3DS remake of Majora's Mask recently, and I loved it, especially because of all of the side characters and helping them out in their daily lives. I always found it a bit sad that whenever you have to go back in time, none of the townsfolk remember the good deeds you did for them. Am I the only one who feels that way?
Regarding the swimming, even if you run out of magic, you can still do a boost, just without the aura. It's not continuous, and you have to press the button constantly, but you're not hopeless. You can even dolphin dive. Tbh, I find it easier to control that way.
There's no reason we should be forced to use magic (or rapidly spam a button) just to do something that should be a natural ability for the species we're, uhh.. "borrowing". If we had some way to toggle between the basic swimming and high speed without those extra requirements I don't think anyone would really have an issue with it. Luckily that's where the modding community comes in... (since we can't rely on Nintendo to address this stuff themselves). As there currently exists a mod that fixes this issue (among several others) along with a bunch of additional QoL tweaks and bug fixes. Definitely worthwhile.
This game is something special. Not just it’s unique gameplay loop, but also, the feeling it brings. Most games bring to the player unabashed joy. Do a thing, get rewarded. Go through arduous trials to in the end save the world and give everyone a happily ever after. Or maybe anger at a control-throwingly difficult challenge, which then leads to pride at concerting it. Maybe fear because of the monster that’s stalking you. And after you defeat that monster, relief that it’s all done. But not many games can bring the feeling of sadness like this one brings. I don’t think it’s something that gameplay can bring: you have to rely on characters and plot to get this feeling. And it’s what this game does best. The impending doom thanks to the moon. The dozens of side characters with their own problems. And by solving these problems, it doesn’t lead to instant happiness, but merely acceptance of what happened, and the ability to begin healing from it. This sadness that brings people together in the worst of times, even if they can’t do anything but comfort each other. Yes, it was inside out, over a decade later, that taught me that. Also, I don’t think you want your player to feel disgust at your game. That just makes them not wanna play anymore.
I cryied my eyes out and drenched my shirt with tears throughout this game is was an extremely beautiful sombre and depressing and sad and happy wonderful game I've never been so moved by a game before quite to this level or way
The ending of this video made me tear up so bad. Me and my 2nd oldest brother would play zelda games together everytime one came out and even played oracle of ages and seasons together. It all started with ocarina in time but Majoras mask made us put our heads together to figure stuff out. For that reason it will forever be one of the fondest games to me. Thank you for this review ❤
My brother and I know that feeling when we first played this game. We had only played Link to the Past and bits of Ocarina of Time at our grandma's house because we didn't have an N64 yet. When Christmas of 1998 rolled around, Majora's Mask was one of the first games we got with our new N64. We were just absolutely floored by how different Majora was from what we had experienced with Zelda so far.
Majora's Mask is one of the few games that I feel gets better every time you replay it. Most games that I love are pretty constant in their appeal, in that my thoughts and opinions of them aren't much different after a replay than they were after my first completion of them. But with Majora's Mask there's always something that I can see in the game that I never thought of before and makes every experience different and unique, no matter how subtle. This game is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever created, Nintendo or otherwise.
Fun Fact: Deku Link's hopping across water does not keep his momentum in the 3ds release like it does in the n64 release which makes progressing through the swamp slower overall.
This game was a perfect sequel not just for the series but for its fans. The players grew up and could get some sort of semblance of maturity and understanding how sad stuff can be but the good you can find. Link is older and wiser and he really gets to show how mature he became by learning about his actions in the present and future.
When you take into account that Link had just gone through hell to save a kingdom, only to be left forgotten and alone as his last friend - the only one aware of the hardships and sorrows he had to go through - abandoned him, this game takes on a much somber and depressing hue. Link left Hyrule as a forgotten hero searching for Navi, and stumbled in a world where every single person bore the likeness of the friends that he lost, and had to watch multiple times as they all were destroyed by the moon. Maybe he is the "hope" to the people of Termina. But to Link, Termina is just a nightmare. An undeserved punishment.
I am the only person out of my group of friends that favor Majora's Mask. and even though it's a good game, everyone is stuck on Breath of the wild. Honestly Majora was such a great departure all while adding a lot of depth to the Legend of Zelda franchise. Majora's Mask will forever be my favorite Zelda game and I am soooooooo happy it received the completion rating! Glad to see someone else truly appreciate this game!
Majora's Mask was my first real Zelda experience. But that's only one of the many reasons why I adore it. It's not just my favorite Zelda game, but one of my top favorite games of all time. The song of healing is also one of my favorite video game songs of all time. It's a very comforting tune.
@@uberculex Or a shortened form of termination depending on how you look at it. Always what i figured they were going for, what with the whole moon and such.

Man, this brings up nice memories. I remember this game as a kid was amazing. I have many fond memories of playing through OoT and MM and both games had exactly one area that legit scared me as a kid. For OoT, it was Gannon's final boss fight. I thought he was the devil. And for MM, it was the cutscene where the moon destroys the world, which I only saw one time by forcing myself to let the clock run out. These games along with games like Banjo and Kazooie, Quest 64, Snowboarding Kids 2, and Goldeneye were staples of my childhood gaming before I got a PS2.
@@lschnitzer7770 No, all N64 versions and later rereleases (except 3ds) have much faster, better, and more fun Zora swimming. @@evdestroy5304 still filling up magic isn't a problem, the controls feel better imo and if you just wanna swim around you could just use chateau Romani or magic potions
This is one of those games that makes completionists out of people. There's not one moment in my playthrough of it that I felt like I was pushing myself to complete something I didn't want to. It's pure bliss that rewards you the deeper you delve into it. Plus, the fact it's a direct sequel allowed the devs more freedom to make it slightly harder and weirder. It feels like just the right middle ground between your typical, full-fledged Nintendo game with fresh, memorable set pieces and a fan hack that has faith that you've reached the necessary skill level to get the most out of its mechanics.
Glad you understand why this game is so special. By far the best Zelda game. You aren't just saving the world from big baddie, you can save individuals who are staring the apocalypse in the face yet still each have their own personal issues that make them feel like real hurting people that can be helped. It also deals with the theme that you can't really help everyone. Link can with some Ocarina magic but that's why it's the ultimate power fantasy. The power to save the world AND the quirky people in it.
Love the vid, but I will say I never had problems with the GameCube version of Majora, your talking about the one from the collection disc with wind waker on it, right?
I only ever had one growing up and that was that I was stuck as goron link spining without using magic and no being able to take the mask off or move at all
I recently got covid and what got me through it was Majora's Mask on my 3DS lying on my bed. Despite the hell I went through, going through Majora's Mask did fill me hope. Reliving the nostalgia, music, characters, and the Goron mask is my absolute favorite. It's my favorite Zelda game and in my top 5.
I love this game so much. It’s honestly one of my favorite games of all time. The contrasts of fear and hope. It’s done really well and it really is a beautiful game.
Thx for the fantastic video Completionist crew! Wanted to say I would DEFINITELY watch an hour long video on Jirard just talking in depth about all the characters, side quests, and interpersonal relationships in Majora's Mask. Like others have said, that was one of the coolest and my favorite parts of MM imo.
I dont know how people can think this personally. There are pretty much no upsides to the 3d version besides the smoother graphics. In my opinion, the atmosphere is ruined, mask transformations are completely botched, especially zora, bosses are ruined, new ice arrow mechanics are stupid, the bombers notebook notification is really annoying
@@cullenbarker2978 idk cant say i can understand the atmosphere is definitely still there imo most of the changes really aren’t ruining the game for me at all
@@6553-t2m the sense of dread is still there, I just mean its a bit too clean. The stock pot inn had this feel of gross run down inn in the 64 version, now it looks spotless. And everything is overbrightened, especially in the dungeons. Id watch a video called "Is majoras mask 3d a bad remake?" It sums up my points really well. The worst thing is the zora swimming. Its so boring now.
I love this video. You can tell just how passionate he is about this game because of how much it means to him and many others, this to me is a perfect example of the completionist videos. Much love man, thank you.
@@aaronjames3228 ...you literally meet his human father in the game...jirard literally talked about it in the video you're commenting on...how could you still think he's anything other than human?
"What if Link was there for someone at like... the exact moment they needed him to be there." I know it was a joke, a gag, a funny goof - but... this is defo one of things I love about Majora's Mask.
I read this at the exact time he said it lmao
Majora's mask story definitely hinges on a balanced level of unfortunate and fortunate fates which
are highlighted with quotes such as "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" to "Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever... Whether a parting be forever or merely for a short time... That is up to you."
The message of this game is that no matter how bad things get in life there is always a way to try to make the best of it.
"Dawn of the Final Day - 24 hours remain" is still probably one of the most ominous, dread inducing sentences I know.
Mine is: (Spoiler for AoC)
Mipha, Daruk, Revali and Urbosa are trapped in their divine beasts.
Couldn't argee more, especially when you look at the sky and see that creepy moon is falling down.

Well in Twilight Princess, the Hero’s Shade was the Hero of Time (i forget if it was confirmed in the game or in the official lore book)
He says he never got to pass on his techniques, and he seems rather visually similar to a stalfos, so...
@@Marqrk but link is a grown up in TP, Link (probably) died in a war, where he never got in a grave. there are vines around him
@@Marqrk It is stated that the link of Twilight princess is a direct descendant of the link of OoT, so he probably didn't die as a kid
Zelda is pretty well know for using odd time signatures also
Not to be a nerd but I know how to play song of healing on my stl ocarina
That's actually really cool tho. I love going into comments and seeing people dissect songs and explain why the song sounds the way it does, if that makes sense. It just really makes me appreciate the work that goes into these soundtracks, and appreciating the soundtrack helps me appreciate the game overall.
Thanks dude. I have a lot of fun trying to imitate my favorite songs on the few instruments I have, and checking out in-depth music videos, but I don't understand shit of what's going on lol. Surprisingly I did make sense of what you wrote so it was fun to learn something new

Thank you.

"Instead of making the game bigger, they balled up Ocarina's design and rolled it down an unsettling rabbit hole." I just really love that line. So true. I always assume the clever quips are Jerard, but regardless - - whoever wrote that line - - awesome.
The saddest part was that the Deku Butler never reunited with his son. Seeing how sad he was made me tear up.
Yeah, I thought it was a really poignant moment at the end to see that instance of permanence in a game about reversing time.
@@rmsgrey Igos du Ikana was the one you "save" in Ikana. While you don't get a mask, you get to make those statues using the other masks.

In Ocarina of Time you can save directly with the menu, same of A Link to the Past in 1990, in Majora's Mask you can't do this on the N64 who knows why, maybe for the sake of padding.
@@saricubra2867 ...You clearly don't know anything about the difficulty of programming. Majora's time/day system was too complex at the time for a standard save feature. LttP and OoT weren't anywhere near as complex or advanced, so they had very simple save systems because the game systems themselves were very simple.
I hated the addition of the giant eyeballs that would come out when you stun the bosses.
*Donkey Kong Music*
Fierce Deity Link needs to make another story appearance
0:01 me trying to assess how bad that fart was.
I'm a bit confused here, I loved the zora swimming in the original, was that really something a lot of people complained about?
I loved both the swimming-zora and rolling-goron mechanics immensely! They were both super satisfying!
People who complain about it just need to get better at the game

Having a Rito transformation is a brilliant idea for BotW2. It would work so well for the "open air" game design.
Yeah.. especially kafei and anju
@@goreman7160 personally I always do the anju and Kafei quest at the very end of my playthrough so I can save the world after helping them.
@@callinater6133 i never thought about doing that tbh. I always do it before stone tower to make under the well manageable cause bottle
Regarding the swimming, even if you run out of magic, you can still do a boost, just without the aura. It's not continuous, and you have to press the button constantly, but you're not hopeless. You can even dolphin dive. Tbh, I find it easier to control that way.
There's no reason we should be forced to use magic (or rapidly spam a button) just
to do something that should be a natural ability for the species we're, uhh.. "borrowing".
If we had some way to toggle between the basic swimming and high speed without
those extra requirements I don't think anyone would really have an issue with it.
Luckily that's where the modding community comes in...
(since we can't rely on Nintendo to address this stuff themselves).
As there currently exists a mod that fixes this issue (among several others)
along with a bunch of additional QoL tweaks and bug fixes. Definitely worthwhile.
“The real majoras mask was the friends we made along the way”
I will always carry (and complete) this game throughout my life. Timeless classic.
AVGN ended 2019 with this, and Jirard starts 2021 with it. Poetic.
"When I first played it in 4th grade"
Well thanks for making me feel old. I was in high school when it came out.
OMG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG
RIGHT ME TOO
Majora's Mask is one of the few games that I feel gets better every time you replay it.
Also makes it significantly more difficult to reach the Butler challenge area. The distance between the lily pads is almost too far.
Thats not a 'fun' fact at all! :(
The remake is full of crap like that. Lord know I adore the original game, but I can’t stand the remake one bit.
That intro was freaking fantastic. Easily one if the most out of nowhere impactful ones I've seen from you, Jirard.
Anyone else flinch each time he said "Termina"?
I've never heard any other soul pronounce it that way before.
Yeah, when he first said Termeena, I was like "Uh...that's not how you say it, Jirard..."
Same...
I do be like that
it made me immediately come to the comments to find others who heard the same thing
“Ter-MEE-nuh”. “GOT”. “Heart fragment”. Is he trolling us?
Majora's Mask was my first real Zelda experience. But that's only one of the many reasons why I adore it. It's not just my favorite Zelda game, but one of my top favorite games of all time.
The song of healing is also one of my favorite video game songs of all time. It's a very comforting tune.
Ah, that mispronunciation of Termina triggers me something fierce/
Not really a mispronunciation, just a different one. But damn, it did throw me off too.
Yeah, same with “HIGH-lyans” vs “HILL-iyans”, “hy-RULE” vs “HIGH-rule”, etc
Came here for this comment. It's literally terminal without the l
@@uberculex Or a shortened form of termination depending on how you look at it. Always what i figured they were going for, what with the whole moon and such.
@@josephhawkins7974 If you pronounce a word wrong, that would be a mispronunciation. I'm not aware of an accent that pronounces terminal like that, which is the inspiration of Termina.
Also, we've heard the name spoken in trailers and interviews so it isn't like this is a written word only.
What I love most about this fella is that no matter how much we disagree, I genuinely respect his opinion. Truly a great man.
Now do a cycle where you help everyone before fighting Majora.
The 3DS version has so many gameplay changes that I can't say it's better than the original. Especially the Zora swimming.
Wasn't that something that was in the og Japanese version or was that something else?
@@lschnitzer7770 No, all N64 versions and later rereleases (except 3ds) have much faster, better, and more fun Zora swimming. It's basically the same as how it is when you use the barrier shield in the 3ds version, except it doesn't drain magic, so you can always swim fast and dolphin jump and such. Such a stupid change.
I only ever had one growing up and that was that I was stuck as goron link spining without using magic and no being able to take the mask off or move at all
He was accidentally using a bad Rom I think
huh funny, i also literally never had a problem with the gamecube version. it was so smooth
I had so many frame issues with the GC and it crashed. The collectors edition
Same bro
I recently got covid and what got me through it was Majora's Mask on my 3DS lying on my bed. Despite the hell I went through, going through Majora's Mask did fill me hope. Reliving the nostalgia, music, characters, and the Goron mask is my absolute favorite. It's my favorite Zelda game and in my top 5.
Jirard is going to have re-complete it again when they release on the Switch for the Legend of Zelda's 35 anniversary
I love this game so much. It’s honestly one of my favorite games of all time. The contrasts of fear and hope. It’s done really well and it really is a beautiful game.
“And yes, skyward sword is a Zelda game” XD fucking killed it!
i loved skyward sword 😭😂
Thx for the fantastic video Completionist crew! Wanted to say I would DEFINITELY watch an hour long video on Jirard just talking in depth about all the characters, side quests, and interpersonal relationships in Majora's Mask. Like others have said, that was one of the coolest and my favorite parts of MM imo.
So nice to hear someone else acknowledge that, weird changes aside, the 3DS version is the superior version.

Did Jirard call Tingle a “weird thing”? Tingle is not a person, he’s just a thing.
Isn't he an imp or something
