Was it worth it to go through all the time and effort to install the Gaggiuino mod on my Gaggia Classic Pro RI9380?

I installed a dimmer on my Gaggia Classic many years ago and have been enjoying flow control all this time. I tried sharing the idea in the online forums back then but people argued that it wouldn't work and would ruin the pump. Really interesting to see that it's now a thing 🤣 My older Classic has an easily adjustable OPV so no need to change springs. In addition to a PID on the boiler, I also use a second thermocouple to monitor the group head temp and that really helps to know when the temp has fully recovered/stabilized and ready for pulling a second shot. Interesting to see how Gaggia modding has evolved!

Thanks for the update. I have tricked out my Classic Pro with all the usual suspects, baskets, screen, OPV spring, PID, etc. Next stage will be something like this.

Awesome video, gonna to look at it. As a engineer in relative field, I got some much idea to improve/simplify the kit. Even can throw an ESP32 in it and call it an IOT coffee machine.
Exactly my thought too! I'd love to feed this data into a database and have an espresso dashboard in grafana, and then some basic machine controls in home assistant. Won't make my shots any better, but I'll have a fun time nerding out on more totally unnecessary home data at least!

the sanremo you can do that stuff too but its like more than twice as expensive as the decent even. gaggiunio is so cool great machine.
Depends if you enjoy completely automating the machine, some people like the hands on nature of having all the mods you did on your previous machine which allows you to do everything the Gaggiuino does except read a graph, one thing you did not cover is how it manages the steam wand that would be interesting to know.
This is definitely my life goal atm!

This looks incredible, installing this on my Espresso Gaggia will definitely be my next project. I'm guessing I need to go a Gaggia Classis boiler and 3 way solenoid for some of the features first. Having never modded coffee machines but done electronics as a hobby the parts look like they should come in well under $100 USD so I am a little confused about the $500 figure unless that includes the machine itself.

It is more than $100 once you put it in your cart u have shipped handling and that adds another $100 or so I just ordered the kit from peak coffee… and it was $273….. but $78 was an add on I bought a bigger screen but u also gotta pay or print a few 3D parts and those are like $25 bucks but idk how much shipping is yet I haven’t ordered them yet they are from a different company… also if u want the tank light or the scale in the drip tray it will add another $25-$100 but it still can be a lot cheaper if u build it all yourself and don’t just buy the kit … but I think it’s worth the money to save a weekends worth of time lol this mod is a game changer can’t wait to get mine in 4-8weeks
beautiful video. thank you for all the work put into this. i have a delonghi stilosa, it's super cheap but has good componements believe it or not. I think i will be adding a gagguino to it as i've done all the other functional mods. i'm hesitant about the pump pressure controller. i do not like how it seems to just turn the pump on and off as opposed to gradually control the power as i would on a dimmer switch. i don't like the idea of it being blasted on and off at full power like it's a heating element. i don't believe this is a good thing for a vibration pump regardless of it's current use in a very expensive machine.
Would be awesome to compare how close the extractions taste is to the descent with equivalent profiles
I've actually done this as I have both machines. Waiting on the DiFluid R2 to come in so I can redo the profile comparison tests. They come pretty close from tastes alone, but the decent is easier to use and has much better temperature control. The largest challenge is copying over profile from the decent as it's profile development ecosystem is much more comprehensive. Currently the hardware (Nextion) is holding the Gaggiuino, due to further development on this interface board lacking in performance to add more developmental options.

@@rjbernaldo_ It’s on my list of things to do. I got the refractometer in over the holidays and have been learning how to use it properly when I can. I should be able to get some shots pulled on both machines this following weekend. While I don’t plan on filming a video, I will be doing a write up on it.

If I've seen this before I bought my pid, I would buy it without a thought. Great video. Because it's cheaper than Pid itself. At this point I am thinking to buy dimmer mode but I may think to buy this may be?
Why the boiler temperature is set to 93c? this will give low water temperature out of the group head. Gaggia manufactor is using 107c at the boiler (with thermostat)
The software knows that there's a temperature drop between the boiler and group head. By default, it assumes that there is a 7c drop, but you can set it to whatever you like. You can see where to change the offset at ua-cam.com/video/Dm1uVyiZOOE/v-deo.html
@@vulcanconray Ohh I see , but even 100c at the boiler is to low. With his classic model the offset should be 12-15c for achieving 92-93c at the group head.
@@jamesmac6102 Naw man, even the PID mods recommend 7 degree offset. I've measured the water coming out of the basket with an instant thermometer and it was accurate. If you set it to 100 it will literally start to steam.
@@mquiring3373 7 degree set for 93c at the group head will give 100c for the boiler (and it does not steam). If you set the boiler to 100c + 7 degree we will get 107c at the group head. But now you may get steam.
I wish this was a thing for the Breville machines. I have a Barista Express, and would really like to keep using a thermoblock/coil machine, and not have to wait up on a boiler. I also just like them better, they're pretty and I like buttons.

The number one piece of advice I can give is to spend A LOT of time reading the Discord channel. The answer to every problem I had was already in there. Also, if you're new to electronics, make sure you know which circuits are high voltage (110v/240v) and low voltage (5v and below) and make sure they never cross paths.

Great question. I keep pre infusion on as it gives me greater flexibility especially on the very first pull, and then dial in normally from there.
Decent is not the only other option btw. Dalla Corte machines do this too and they look super sexy.

I'm kinda torn on this. I definitely want to mod my GCP, but idk if the features you're describing is worth paying nearly $300 more compared to the shades of coffee mods. I'd still be getting 90% of the way there minus the graphs and automated profiling. And there is something satisfying in retaining some of that control. As for the flush/descale modes, I don't really consider those features since you could always flush/descale your gaggia without any mods.
I did both. Go with Shades if you want to keep it simple both in installation and less variables to control. It also looks slick. The manual dimmer is awesome but it did annoy me because it's hard to be precise and consistent from shot to shot compared to a microcontroller. It's great for preinfusion though. With a bit of courage, you could go with gaggiuino - the king of mods. You'll need several days to tinker but it will give you ultimate control and repeatability. Oh, and it was cheaper to do gaggiuino, more like under $175 USD.
Gaggiuino is what I will recommend. It's the cheaper option too.
What is the total actual Gaggiuino cost?
Gaggiuino is by far the best choice. But shades of coffee is more than good enough for most people. And the relatively easy install makes it cheaper depending how you value your time.
Hi, I'm currently waiting on my Gaggiuino parts to arrive... can you tell me how the timing works for the shots? Do you still hit the brew switch off to stop the shot? Or does the machine stop automatically as per the selected profile. I'm just wondering what happens if a shot is running slightly faster / slower. I'm not adding the hardware scales in my build.
I still hit the brew switch manually. Look into "stop on dose" if you'd like to try doing it automatically 😀
If I get the latest pcb kit do I need to do anything else like springs pid scales water sensors.....

Amazing review, loved it. I also bought all accessories and im awning to make the upgrade soon. Would appreciate some feedback on the steam part too. Have you or anyone used the 3.5 inch display vs 2.4 ?
The 3.5" display is not recommended since the resolution is greater. This means that the individual graphic components (104 of them I believe) would need to be tweaked to fill the screen properly. I purchased the 2.8" screen by mistake but, as it is the same resolution as the 2.4" this works. You will have to change some settings and recompile the HMI file for flashing the screen though.
@@JonathonDoig thanks for the info. I came to the same conclusion as well, so I thought it will be easier to just order the 2.4" one :D. I am waiting to get delivered, eventually next month. I have gathered almost all components, will be printing the housing this week, so I might start thinking where what I will mount in the machine.
@@sandokan4e If you are printing your own enclosures don’t forget that the screen enclosure will need to be modified. I’m at the point where I have the LV components working on a breadboard. Just need to take the plunge for the HV and the pip work .
@@JonathonDoig I was thinking to print the housings, which are available in the github documentation. The ones for STM32 chip and Gaggia Classic Pro. I am following the provided guidance there.

I wish it controlled the pump differently, doing it this way is clunky and imprecise. PWM-ing a small SSR is one smooth way, but there are better ways. Using a K-type thermocouple is overkill, too. A plain old thermistor is perfectly capable at these temps and requires no extra hardware.
Pump is controled via a dimmer module (Phase Cutoff).
As all is open Source you could feel free to use a NTC instead of the Thermocouple. (the used Modukes are dirt cheap and reliable, so i choosed to do my upcoming build 1:1)
SSR is used for PWMing the Heating Element.
What i am missing are user specific/selectable Profiles.
May be coming in the Future, if not i will go for that in the Winter Months as my Son and i will use the Gaggia in slightly different Ways:
I Just need a Upgrade to my heavily modded Delonghi EC680 which does pretty fine and want my daily Lungos without any Hassle.
My Son instead wants to experiment, is going to try different roasts and Types if Coffee,...
Hi Rj Bernaldo. I am trying to program my Comtroller and I hope you can help me out understand what some of the variables are in the monitor. What is the MAIN DRIVE & BREW DRIVE? What do they do when you input a number? Then what is the Hold & Length? I took a screenshot of the numbers you had in your video but without an understanding of what these numbers do in the brew or extraction, I wouldn't know how to proceed tweaking them based on my ground, etc.

This turns your gaggia into a super espresso machine. Very, very cool. But lets be honest. Most of us dont need this lol. I love my shades of coffee setup. This would be an awesome toy though but I already have to many hobies and not enough time.

Have you tried making a sprover? Do you think the heating capacity of the bouler (heating compensation included) is adequate?

Nice functionality, but I don’t care for it. The Gaggiuino touchscreen is ridiculously small. I don’t like the Decent, either. I hate the sounds these machines make! I want to manually interact with making coffee, and the challenge of getting it right is part of the fun. It’s a calming ritual for me. I am in the process of installing the Shades of Coffee mods, so perhaps I’ll see the value in this Gaggiuino at some point. But honestly, the Gaggia Classic is awesome in stock condition!

I remember reading that it's not recommended.
I did it without soldering experience and managed just fine with a bit of help from the community. Just be sure to take your time and read every bit of information available on the Discord and website. If you pay attention you'll see what to look out for and how to do things.

@@purslanecampion3104 I had a hard time figuring out how to wire the HV lines. LV are very straightforward because if its solid documentation and instructions. For the HV stuff I recommend getting yourself familiar with reading and understanding schematics because, while step for step instructions are available, I found them to be a bit chaotic and all over the place. That's probably my own lack of understanding but it's something to look out for. It's not hard at all when you understand what you're looking at. The schematics are solid.

Time is money and I hate tinkering. I'd rather drop a couple grand on a dual boiler pid machine that works out of the box.
