A note from a breast cancer bopsy: I was diagnosed (via a regular mammogram) in 2016. Neither my doctor or I could feel anything wrong, so I was surprised when they showed me the little "tadpole" on the screen and asked me to come back for a biopsy in a few days. After a lumptomony showed it was a contained cancer and a chat with both an oncologist and a radiation oncologist I chose to have only radiation. I can now say I'm a healthy survivor of 6-1/2 years, and a strong promoter of annual mammograms. Keep the faith, Alex. I truly believe that faith and attitude helped me through this difficult (successful) journey.

Dear Alex, God bless you on this journey and thank you for sharing…it is much appreciated. I recently had a lumpectomy…what sent me to the doctor was “an itch” …one itchy breast. They found some precancerous cells and removed them. I’ll be having a follow up mammogram and sonogram on Monday. I feel the same way, if I do have breast cancer I would have a mastectomy. Bless you for being so open …it will be a great help to many woman. ❤

Alex and John, so sorry to hear about your bad news. Prayers to both of you. And a little something I hope will put a smile on your face. My mom had breast cancer forty five years ago. I was all of twenty four at the time and could not imagine having a breast removed. There wasn't any reconstruction back then, cut it off and that was it. I said to my mom, "how can you deal with this terrible thing losing a breast how horrible. Her response was," its just a breast honey, your dad never played with that side anyway".

I worked with the Breast Cancer Center for 6 years and I attended the weekly cancer conferences and they discuss different cases on diagnosis, care, etc. I knew I needed to get the bilateral mastectomy because it is likely to go to the other breast. Everything is so political and so it was the safest to have a bilateral mastectomy. Then it became a thing to just do the breast that had the cancer. It’s my body and I knew what I had to do and I have no regrets. I am two years out and now I have decided to go ahead with the cosmetic surgery. I had so much to think about but it until months later that I realized I would feel better to have breasts. I was also stage 1 and I am very thankful. I am praying for you and your family and You will get threw this and you will see life in a very different way. Much Love.❤

So sorry you have to take this journey. I was so grateful my children are all grown. I had uterine cancer. I had chemo and radiation. So I had a hysterectomy at Sarah Cannon in Nashville. I hurt more from a sprained knee than from my surgeries. I had a mesh put in one day and hysterectomy the next. I am prone to blood clots. Have the greatest doctors you could ever want. I am cancer free now for 18 months. Hurray for you for speaking out. I turned 80 last September. I am enjoying my second childhood. Prayers and hugs to you and your family.

This is quite an exhausting journey! My 2 friends and I started Cancer Comfort Quilts to have for Chemo, doctors appts. Travelling to physicians etc. These are lap quilts. We live in Roseburg, Oregon. We hear from various sources about people on this journey and pray for them as we make the quilts. We then meet them and if they are open to it we pray with them and every time we think of them we pray. Each quilt is different and we make bags to put them in with pockets. We put water, snacks, coloring books, pens etc. in the pockets! Love you and that you are sharing this journey! June

In April I will be 5 years out from triple negative breast cancer. When you commented about the dimpling it reminded me of the fact that I did not know that dimpling could also include an entire indentation of the side of your breast. That is what mine looked like and I just attributed it to a bra that was too tight. When they handed us a book explaining all the issues and they showed a picture it showed a concave side of a breast. Wish I would have known that years before I was diagnosed. Thankfully it did not spread into lymph nodes. I watched you when you had your show on TV and even have a picture with you from an APQS quilt show.... Your shows inspired me to make many quilts. Sending you healing thoughts. Hope all goes well for you in this journey.

You got this! I got sick in Dec. 2021. Doc on call would not order a blood test for 3 weeks. I had eaten razor clams right after Thanksgiving and was sick within an hour. I thought would bet over it, but 3 weeks and 4 doc visits later, I was worse. Blood test on Dec. 31,and headed to emergency surgery on Jan. 4. Large access in Intestine, removed, but they found uterine cancer during the surgery scan. Went through genetic testing and my cancer is environmental, caused probably by talc and stage 3. The most important thing I can pass onto you is to do the chemo, if needed. I had 2 more surgeries and 6 radio chemo treatments. I did not get sick from chemo, but I could not eat very much. The cellulite did disappear though! I finished chemo on Sept. 8 and had complete hysterectomy on Dec. 1,2021. Make sure to baby yourself and rest a lot during chemo. I am just now beginning to be able to do a little more at home now. I am now cancer free and trying to help others with love. Bless you through this journey. I am 68 and my gram taught me to quilt when I was 9 and had the mumps. Sending prayers!

Hi Alex, ❤️ Oh my goodness, I've never heard of a cancer diagnosis compared to a quilt block - I almost had to get the seam ripper out!! My body tightened up with such pressure of anxiety for you. I've never had the pleasure of meeting you but i've followed you and bought many of your books and patterns. I thank you so much for sharing your journey. My husband has been fighting cancer since 2005. His journey has been exhausting and stressful but in the end - "He's still here with me" and I am so blessed for that. I pray both You and John take one day at a time and don't rush into anything. You have such a positive attitude and uplifting spirit. Your laughter is so precious and is felt right to my core. Again, thank you so much for your sweetness. I can't wait to make some scarves of joy. Hi John, praying for you as well. Head Up, Shoulders Back, Purpose Firm and Don't Look Back 💐❤️ Hugs to all.

Thank you for this. I lost my DAD in May 2022 to metastatic breast cancer. He participated in every trial that was available to him. At the time I was furious with his doctors because I felt they were very interested in my dads case because male breast cancer is so rare. At the time, the treatments were clearly not helping and making his quality of life less than it could have been. However, now that I have had time to think about it, it was ultimately up to my DAD to continue treatments and he NEVER gave up hope EVER. Also, his participation will hopefully help future BC patients.

Alex and John, you are in my prayers. Back in June, 2021 I heard the words "you have Squamous Cell Carcinoma" and I went numb. Long story short, I'm in remission, have recently finally gained back the first 10 of 51 pounds I lost, and pray daily I don't have to hear those words or similar words (breast cancer) . Being that I turned 71 when I went through my first cancer and was told I "should" have a 96-97% success result before Radiation and Chemo even began, I was and remain hopeful. I was so scared when I had to have a mammogram directly after my cancer treatments of what I might possibly hear. I didn't, but it's still on my mind. I wish you the best results! I will pray for you daily. Please keep your fans as up to date as you wish, but know I'll be thinking of you every day and praying for the best outcome.

I had a bilateral mastectomy 20 years ago. They did immediate reconstruction by a tram flap procedure. They took my tummy fat and part of my abdominal muscle to reconstruct. It was a little harder recovery due to the additional abdominal surgery but the results were excellent. I am grateful that option was given to me. My mom had a single and 50+ years ago she had a very bad scar. I chose to go a different route and am so happy I did. Good luck sister.

I was diagnosed with BC in 2009. I was 41. I had one the size of a golf ball in one side and luckily with an MRI they found small one in other side. Did bilateral mastectomy. Luckily no chemo or radiation and surgeon cleared the margins. Everyone’s journey is your own. Laughter was my best way of dealing with mine. The surgeries now are so much easier because the plastic surgeon can come in right after breast surgeon and put expanders. They a few months later you swap out expanders with implants. Please don’t do a flap procedure. Implants are so much safer now. I am part of a BC group in Tennessee where I try and help new survivors on their journey. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Believe it or not it was the best thing that happened to me because I appreciate life so much more and have met such amazing and brave women.

My Mother taught me years ago as we go through struggles in our life, it is not so much about why this happened to me (others) but "How do you walk through it?" You are a wonderful example to others of positive attitude, sharing, talking about it and knowing you will carry on. Thank you.

I just had a double mastectomy last May 2022, Alex you are making a great decision for you! I didn’t have to do the chemo or radiation therapy at all so I am so happy. Recovery was great I had no problems at all and I am 70 years young. I will be praying that you have great recovery and no chemo and radiation therapy is needed. Thanks for all you do. Stephanie

Bless you, Alex Anderson, as you travel this journey! I walked it with my sister from diagnosis to her funeral; her journey lasted just over 8 years. The type she has was very aggressive but her team kept her informed all along the way. When it hit the last time, it had metastasized & they were no drugs or surgery options. She lasted just under 8 weeks from last diagnosis. Alex, prayers for you & your family. Best of luck on your journey!

Alex, thank you so much for this video and sharing your story. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. I can’t believe the number of women who have commented on their journeys as well. A great reminder for us to do our self check. And if the power, strength and resiliency of women.

I had breast cancer in 1998 at the age of 42. I am still here. :) Yeah, it's contained! Pet scans were not available when I had cancer. I began with a lumpectomy, which was not enough, so I had to have more surgery. I chose a bi-lateral mastectomy with reconstruction at the same time. The reconstruction I chose was a trans-abdominal free flap and could be done only once in my life, so I chose bi-lateral. It was a 15 hour surgery, with a year's recovery. During surgery, Lymph nodes were taken, revealing metastasis, so chemo began after the last of the 4 drain tubes were removed. Whichever road you choose through all the options, we will see you on the finished side of this part of your journey. I sounds as though you have a wonderful support group

I originally watched your show in the 1980's (I think) on PBS. Your love of quilting inspired me. I did not know you were on UA-cam. I just happened to notice the thumb nail for this video and recognized you. I have been through what you are going through and am 10 years out. My mother and brother also made this journey. Thank you for sharing with us. Your positive attitude is still inspiring. I will share this with as many people as I can. God keep you and your family in his arms always.

Those 3 words “you have cancer” are always scary/unnerving/earth-shattering. In the last decade, I’ve been thru surgery, chemo and radiation, and am now a 3-time cancer survivor. Stay positive, make time for yourself, and be proactive. Stay strong, but let your care-givers, family and friends take care of you. Thoughts and prayers for you and John.
