Great video. These podcasts are great and they are very informative. Live in the Philadelphia area and this past late July and then in mid August put down 2 apps of tenacity because I had enough of my yard being 70% crabgrass. Had unbelievable success, but next was the hard part digging up all the dead plants, filling them in and reseeding. My wife wasn't too happy with me for a few weeks until the grass started to grow. Had about 80-85% germination rate (used Scott's Penn Mix of KBG/PRG/Fine Fecsue mix) using all the nutrients you recommended, made sure to get all the leaves up in late fall, watered late and put down a winter fertilizer and the yard has looked great throughout winter.
I give this backstory as I I wasn't sure if I should reseed this upcoming spring to fill in those missed spots, but your video helped me realize that suppressing crabgrass is the most important thing I can do, when I should put the pre-emergent app down and what product I should use.
Looking forward to following your additional podcasts and continue to make my yard even better.

Very good, Allyn. Valuable info (55, 65, 70, actual vs average soil temps, and greencastonline). As you take lawn care questions be sure to take some each time from each of the zones (cool season, transition, and warm season), if possible, so that all viewers can learn something for their zone. Good job! Keep them coming. If it's not "go time" yet where your viewers live then it will be soon and people need to be ready and prepared.

For the Garden Grove dude (a few miles from me). Our 5 year soil average is 59F and 10 year is 58F for today. A window for our preemergent is mid to early January, then again in mid to late April. We hardly ever get below 50F for soil temps. However, I would wait to do anything until this barrage of rains we have been getting passes. We are getting another 4 to 5 days of rain next week and are having a cold spell right now with air temps in 60's during the day and high 30's/low 40's at night. Just last week we had 50+ nights and 75F days. So wait a week or two until the cold goes away and rains stop. Unlike Florida we get rain a few weeks a year and right now we are in the thick of it (we've had over 10 inches of rain the last few weeks). Also, Marathon is very popular here in Southern California (especially if you had sod put in, its very likely to be Marathon), its a dwarf tall fescue, it wont spread. So after you get your weeds under control you will have to overseed if you have it as your lawn (you can get it in 1lb or 5lb bucket for $10/$35 respectively at local stores... Lowes and Home Depot wont carry it, they carry other types of Tall Fescue/Bermuda/Ryegrass for our area, all inferior to Marathon IMO, Marathon is very drought resistant which is needed for our hot ass dry summers and has an amazing dark blue look, stays green year round... the only downside to it is that it doesnt spread, but less maintenance I guess, no thatch to worry about). Common weeds in our area are Oxalis (looks like clover), crabgrass and dandelions. Cities tend to use some sort of native grass (that will get wiped out like a weed by any weed control,) not sure what the grass type is, but it can also invade your lawn from city maintained islands and some people have it as their lawns (since it invaded long ago and killed their real lawn), it looks pretty decent (good thing is that weed control will kill it).

I want to mow, water, aerate, fert , gypsum, Hume correctly. O and try and level ground. But I do want to watch and learn. Fall when I overseed I’ll try tenacity. I had POA and fairy ring issue last season so I’m curious what that will look like this year. I did a preemerge for POA I’ll see if that worked. Love your work I watch videos over and over. Hey LCN, Great Podcast - Always informative. Quick question about Prodiamine Split Application. If I do a split with 1st application (.18/1000 ) around March 25th and the 2nd application (.18/1000) around May 15th, will it be OK to throw down some seed from the Seed Super Store around the May 30th and beyond.? Or will that seed not germinate and grow because of the Prodiamine application ? I want to help the lawn convert from its current Fescue to a Turf Type Tall Fescue (Sod quality) lawn. Hope I'm being clear here

First and foremost, this Podcast was a solid 10/10! I literally listened to it on my way to work and once I got into the office, made so many 'new' notes for my Yard Journal. Secondly, this has to the be best pre-emergent DIY video I've ever seen. I wasn't confused on the pre-emergent process, but it cleared up a few questions I've always had. And not last but least, please continue these Podcasts as it was superb on every front and I do appreciate it! Btw, I'll just make one comment, since you talked about Austin, TX and I live in Dallas, TX. Regarding putting down disease control (right now), wouldn't it be best to wait until the temps rise a bit and there's activity in the lawn, such as the existence of non-dormant grass? Don't you want the grass to be a starter growth phase to apply? I don't think you need to pre-disease your lawn, but I could be totally incorrect. Thoughts?

    • @LawnsAcrossAmerica
      @LawnsAcrossAmerica  5 років тому +1

if soil temps are nearing 65 the lawn is going to start growing and that means ok for disease control. if the lawn is still dormant, you are correct, no disease control yet! Great feedback also , thanks so much!!!

Awesome podcast! Love the extra time for content Podcast format allows vs. videos. Both have their use - both are great! This addition definitely strengthens the LCN game - great idea! Constructive feedback:
    1. Sit down so we can feel more relaxed watching you - Lol. Get a bar stool if you want to keep the height.
    2. You look like Wilson from Home Improvement. ;) Maybe find a less obtrusive pop filter and get a desktop mic vs. the boom? We like seeing you!
    3. The garage setting is perfect. Maybe set up something a little more "tonight show" looking desk in there, but still very garage/basic feel to it? A small plywood/maple top for your tool box (removable), desktop mic, MacBook off to the side like you have now, bar stool behind the desk, desk top bottle mic, LCN mug visible, etc.

Thanks for that as every tidbit helps further the cause, ok my cause, but that is your point. Great info Allyn! Loved the detail. My only suggestion would be to not cover your face. Other than that, this is going to be one of my top channels this season! Looking forward to more

Great podcast! The only part where you talked to much was when you spoke about talking too much! Haha. Please tell me there is a pre emergent to nutsedge!!!! That’s my killer. I’m hoping after my partial Reno with Pete’s tall fescue it will help. I’m on the lookout for your next email for the best granular pre emergent!!

Hey Allyn, love that you have this pod cast, looks and sounds great. (I did not wear headphones so cannot critic 100%) I digress. Any which way, I live in the transition zone, near Raleigh NC. I have zoysia in my front yard (unknown species) and my question is: should I burn it off or just cut it low? I struggled last year with the winter kill and spent most of the summer raking attempting to get it to thicken and green up. Any advice? At that time I did have a professional treat the yard and had to mow every other day to keep it below 4". It seems most happy around the 3-3.5" mark. No scalp marks and nice green color, and accepts stripes at that height with a rotary mower. I have been in the house for almost four years but only decided last year to become full fledged lawn care but. Any advice or maybe a subject you would be willing to speak on? Thanks! Keep up the great content!

you should work your zoysia down to 1.5" height of cut and keep it there. Go even down to 1" if you can over time. do that slowly over the next 5-6 weeks as it is coming out of dormancy

Excellent podcast! I thought you were reaching over to pet the flamingo, then you raised the coffee cup and I cracked up! I hope Connor appreciates the frequent fondling of the bird disguised as coffee drinking.
The camera distance and the large mic hides too much of your face, which doesn't give me the feeling that we're 'in this together' like the vids of 'us' walking through the lawn, or mowing, or mixing the ferts does. They were much more personal.
I used to wonder if Casey Neistat used a green screen or poster behind himself for his background. I figured he was sitting on his bed (or toilet) while making his vids and I was looking at a fake scene. His background just looked too 'New York' crammed with all kinds of things in a small place. Now he has multi angles from the room and I see its 3D. …….But then I wonder how cool it would be to see you sitting in the middle of a laboratory full of men in white coats rushing around with smoking lab tubes, and an occasional eruption or small explosion going on while you're explaining herbicides and antifungals . I've also been thinking how you could incorporate a fertility clinic background in your discussions of pre-emergent and the bio-stim pack!
I love the pronunciation of DYE-thiopyr and Pro-DYE-amine, it helps me easily remember what those are used for and I can impress any of the other customers standing next to me at the HD!
I think it would be hilarious to get some footage of you in an race official's hat with a starting gun superimposed into an dash race signaling the start or go time for various applications. There must be some movie clips of the words "GO! GO! GO!" in them that can be incorporated into the videos or podcasts. I'm sitting here laughing at the vision I have of you in my head with a setup like Jim Cramer's MAD MONEY, hitting buttons with sounds and clips of various things behind you. Hey, when it's not quite time to spray yet we see Manning yelling "OMAHA", then you know it's coming soon! Bawahahaha!

Sounds good. Like the pace. Like the content. I could personally do with having the camera closer. Could also probably get the mic/pop filter off to the side a bit so we can see your whole face. Lastly, is that one of those reflection blocker things with the dominated sticker on? If so, it is very likely doing precisely nothing with where it's positioned relative to the microphone.
