This Light is inferior for many things, but the greatest sin he has commited, is simping for Mia, Light in the anime never once simped for anyone, and was smarter about his choices
Anime light manipulated who’ve he needed, even if it took seducing someone. I liked anime light because he thought out every possibility and only used the death note when he needed to. Movie light said let’s kill whoever we want FOR NO REASON
*Light in the anime:* I am a mastermind with a complex plan to get what I want and I plan every interaction i have to create a persona people will trust and thus making people not suspicious of me. *Light in this movie:* Haha notebook go brr
I don't understand how Ryuk can be the only part of live action adaptation of Death Note that kinda works. Like, that's the one part where live action imo had permission to fail. That's the one thing they then decided to actually make an effort at.
The sad part is that the actor of L actually watched/read Death Note and got familiar with L’s character. When he got the script he was disappointed but played the character they gave him
@@gabrielcaro well aren't all the Japanese characters are being played by white people too? it takes place in Seattle, of course it's not all going to be white people. no need to point out and complain how he is being played by a black person.
But what makes something your name? Laws and legal papers? I think it's what you indentify as yourself. Watari always goes by the name Watari, so that's enough. L on the other hand, knows his own real name, and Light knows L isn't his proper name, so it doesn't work
@@linux_b1969 How should he know that? I mean he didnt hear that L has a real name. The script writer were just dumb as shit and only watched the first 5 minutes of each episode xD
Linus Baltasar Hoem Hegre it’s not what you identify yourself as. The rule in the death note is “The names you will see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person isn't registered in the family registration."
The painful part to me is there are so many "Death Note" stories people can tell. It doesn't have to be the battle of Light and L or N and that one kid who basically killed trump. You could drop the Deathnote into any country in any time period with any type of character and get a wild ride. But instead we got this.
Even the same basic story set in 2023 would work. The Death Note manga is 20 years old, the world has changed a lot in that time. I'd really like to see a modern take on the story of Kira. Things like the Internet for example played almost no role in the original Death Note (just in passing).
Yeah, fun fact, the original story was about a bullied kid who accidentally killed his bullies so he used an eraser Ryuk gave him to remove them, it then cuts to years later we see he barely uses it and only for certain people
Exactly! Light isn't the type to use a supernatural notebook to get some stupid hot chick. In fact he would've killed her the moment he got suspicious, and he would've got suspicious very very fast
Ryuk: Hey Light, the last human owner of the Death Note was Light. No, no, that's not you, he wasn't dumb. Light: Oh really? Who chased him then? Ryuk: He was called L, the smarter one.
I think the worst part about death note getting a shitty live action is the fact that out of all the anime’s to get a live action it is probably one of the ones that would work best in a live action and they still fucked it up
There are multiple good live-action adaptations of Death Note, they're just made in Japan. The TV drama in particular is really good, it takes a few creative liberties that make for some really interesting divergences.
Light in anime: (a brilliant, optimistic but arrogant and egoistic student with the vision of becoming the God of the perfect world with no criminals. Every step he makes has a purpose, his moves aren't aimless and he can plan pretty much 10 episodes forward. His downfall was his own egoism and underestimation of Near and Mello cuz he already got rid of the smartest detective of all time and OUTSMARTED A GOD OF DEATH.) Light in Netflix movie: lMaO nOtEbOoK gOeS BRR
Well, light did not loose because of his egoism...yes, he got egoistic and he did downplay Near by saying he isn't as smart as L and shouldn't even call himself his successor. But it still wasn't the reason for his loss. He lost because of one thing, Mikami's thinking being similar to Light's thinking I can explain more on this if you want but I think you must be knowing what it means
@@vedantgole231 I understand, but Light didn't really see Near as that much of a threat to be honest. He feared Mello because the guy was crazy and wanted him dead as fast as possible, but he saw Near as a boy who's playing it safe so he didn't really try with him. L is obviously MUCH MUCH more capable than Near, but Light defeated L because he saw him as a superior so a LOT OF PRESSURE WAS ON HIM. Light just heavily underestimated everyone else from the very beginning he killed L, he got cocky and started killing way too fast which led to his death. I have no doubt that if Light was equally as careful as he was with L, he would kill Near
I’m convinced the writers of this movie never watched death note. It’s like they looked a few things about the characters and the plot then decided to make a really crappy movie based off the scraps of information they had.
That's what happens with a lot of movies. A generic or back burner movie gets a few plot points or branding or franchise slapped on top and presented as such without being actually faithful.
As someone who has never watched/read death note, but knows some details about it through pop culture osmosis, I can agree this is probably what I would make if you asked me to adapt DN.
I honestly suspect that the original idea for this movie was "Death Note but every character is the literal opposite of how they are in the original." Light and L are overly-emotional idiots instead of calculating geniuses, Misa/Mia is a manipulative psychopath instead of a well-intentioned but kind of dumb girl who is constantly manipulated, Ryuk goes out of his way to influence what's going on instead of staying out of it and acting as a spectator.
The movie wasn't super clear, but IIRC both times we think Ryuk has done something it's a fake out. The first is Mia killing the agents, and the other is...I honestly forget what exactly, but I think it's revealed that it's Mia again.
月食 he still goads Light into using the book the first time, and later asks him to give it up, and from what's written in the book when Light gets it he's given it to multiple humans before and possibly killed them. He also tries to get Light to give up the book at one point. Compare Anime Ryuk, who literally drops the book into the human world at random and then is almost purely a spectator.
My coworker told me he wanted to start getting into anime and he asked me, a massive weeb, which he should start with. I recommended My Hero Academia, Attack On Titan, and Death Note. When I told him to watch Death Note and how good it was he responded with “Oh I liked the Death Note Movie on Netflix so I’m sure I’ll like the anime” I choked
I mean, to be fair, Light isn't 100% accurate to the manga either. But that's mainly because his death in the anime is vastly inferior to what it's like in the manga. His manga death showed what he truly is; a pitiful, egotistical coward that isn't any better than the "criminals" he kills. It's honestly why the musical for Death Note is one of the best adaptations of the franchise; it keeps that death the same as the manga.
Fact: there’s actually a Japanese live action death note movie that is faithful to the source material while also being good. Making this movie even more redundant
*in the show* L: I did a thing. Light: If I ask him what he did, will he think I'm trying to figure out how much he actually knows about Kira? *In the movie* L: You're Kira Light: Lol so?
This youtuber sucks he calls Kira dumb for something that worked and im still currently watching this video but damn does this guy suck, he wants this to be a romantic film we know all there is to know to set the stage is a highschool kid with a death note that likes to kill people as sadistic revenge but he later gets betrayed by his girl friend who he later meets the L was smart when he somehow figures out that he is not in Japan 8:22 Dude im done watching this after this happened the first 4 minutes of this youtubers rant was dumb af HE CONTRADICTS HIM SELF SO MANY TIMES LOOK AT THIS 15:22 17:26 The reason the cops got to the Wheel is because they where searching for L So expect them to be everywhere like the guy said Search for those 2 people smh this guy is either ignorant or ignorant by choice Kira did his part well lore wise the acting was bad Reyuke tells kira in the beginning that he can choose how someone dies and this guy does not know what physically possible means this man should re watch his videos there are so many things that are physically possible to manipulate for example SHE physically rips the paper out the guy physically writes into the note while being mind controlled this youtuber sucks this movie was bad but this idiot makes this shit dumber than it already is. its like he never watched the first 15 mins of this movie. correct me if im wrong but I don't think L said the paper was magical i thought of it as wow everyone whos ever died names are on this paper i can use this to my advantage.
Ikr misa/mia is not portrayed as misa at all. Like, even the names are different. And Light Yagami is changed to Turner. Like, Netflix, did you REALLY have to? Light is supposed to be super smart, but he’s just stupid in the netflix adaptation.
@@dasher14 yeah, and with light, i remember at the beginning of the live action movie he met Ryuk while he was in detention... like light would never get detention in the anime, he’s just dumb in the netflix movie.
I am honestly shocked that they thought that adapting the Death Note anime into a movie was a good idea. The anime is 37 episodes and there is ZERO filler. They could cut out the part with Near, but that's still like 19 episodes, which is still like 7 straight hours. How did they think they could capture the essence of all of that into 90 minutes?? It would take like 60 minutes just to explain the mechanics of the death note
if they wanted sequels its for sure doable. a 3act structure of establishing light and the world, end of the second act being the Lind L taylor scene and ending with ray pembers death.
actually the director of death Note used the group survive in his previous film "The Guest" which then the duffer brothers used in stranger things, so if anything stranger things is copying adam wingard
Light in the anime/manga was momentarily surprised, but collected himself pretty quickly. Light in _this_ live action adaptation was straight up having a wimpy, screaming episode.
Yeah, it’s more realistic that a person has a complete flip out moment, rather than a moment of being a bit surprised. I mean, it’s a paranormal death god. I would’ve had a brown moment in my shorts. Yeah, I would’ve shit my pants.
@@MrRyan-fd9rd Realistic, yeah. But Light from the anime/manga wasn’t like most people. Now granted, Light already had a week to get acquainted with a supernatural book of death, so he probably had that mental buffer compared to this “Light,” but nonetheless, he was a braver person than most people. That was the point.
i really missed the part of multiple shinigami and the whole “forgetting the death note exists and then it coming back to them when they touch it” plot point, that was one of my favorite little plotlines in the anime.
Essentially Light made that plan assuming that the memories are connected to the death note and whoever touches it. There were two death notes. To see the other shinigami you need to touch THEIR Death note. If he didnt do that weird cycle before turning himself in, its implied that he would only remember the memories involving ryuk and not rem, the other shinigami. His theory was that if he transfers ownership while holding on one of the death notes then goes through that cycle, he'll intertwine what memories each note brings back. Making it so that as soon as he touches EITHER of the notes once again he'll have the full picture/full memories involving both of the shinigamis and their notes. Same would go for Misa once she touches one of the notes. However, and mind you this is my interpretation, this was also just a theory. Light set this plan up so that even if he was wrong and that he didnt get any memories back, his life would simply work out as having caught the fake kira he assigned alongside L as the hero. He made it so that no matter happened he would win as either Kira or Light Yagami, L's side kick.
@@RustedBuddy5192Ahhh I get in in the last episode in deathnote. The reason why light cried to where misa is and run so also the reaosn why hes not kira,or my opinion is maybe when he ran and run until he got to that stairs maybe his memory of kira is gone and he knows hes wrong too, maybe he did it so that he will think they defeat kira (even tho hes kira)but that also made himself think they won yk i kinda tired to explain so yeah thats my thoughgs of your.Plss reply to me if im right..
Rahim Islam I’m glad someone brought this up misa wasn’t interested really in killing people she was obsessed with having light love her and light didn’t care about her he cared about using her for his own gain
Now that I think about it, in the Netflix ver. Light and Mia's were changed, Light is now in love with Mia while at the same time Mia only used him for her own personal gain
Light wasnt even interested in girls really. He's was a complete sociopath and only used the women to suit his needs. He goes on a Date with a random girl just so he had a reason to be on a bus to trick an FBI agent to given him his name.
I still to this day do not understand why lights mother has to be dead and his farther is a dead beat, the whole idea and character of Light Yagami is that he was born for success, he’s got an amazing home life, he’s a natural genius, he’s very attractive, he’s rich, and he’s constantly reminded by the people around him that he’s great and it’s justified, so when he gets the death note he goes from a guy who likely has a large ego to having a full on god complex, making him a poor high schooler with a bad upbringing takes away so much character, he’s not a calculating, manipulative genius that’s aiming to take over the world, he’s an edgy high school kid that would probably shoot up the school and just got the death note instead
Death Note doesn't work as a movie. Period. The ideas are so deep in the anime that I was thinking about them for days. To your point, one of the most important scenes is when Light and L are contrasted, Light being a groomed genius and L being a mad genius. L was better in a raw sense, but ultimately dies because Light has superior resources, i.e., advanced knowledge of Shinigami. It wasn't a perfect information game, or else Light wouldn't have made it long enough to even temporarily "win"
i agree with this analysis so much! it's the like movie directors wanted light to be seen as the underdog finally getting his claim to fame, while the original light was the top dog. he was cool, smart, popular, the exact opposite of light turner. the movie directors butchered light's character and everything he stood for lol tumblr has a post that analyses both characters flawlessly i laughed so much at the last line. yeah light turner would probably be THAT guy who shoots but there's a debate to had there. would the original light shoot up a school? (if they made him white, they could have channeled his anger and put that line in the script, that he's a genius who's so bored of life that he may shoot up a school just for the kicks (if they made turner as smart as yagami, he would be aware of his privilege as a white man, and maybe that would have been an interesting political statement? since the directors did intend to make a racial point, imo)) i think that even though light may have the intelligence or even motivation to pull something like that, his character is shown as "wants to commit violence, but is too well-behaved/held back by society to do so". case in point: 1. he wants to hit misa, but he doesn't actually do it (because he wants her to like him to use her) 2. with naomi misora, wants to use force to extract her real name, but doesn't do so (doesn't want to cause a scene) which leads us to believe that light is confident that if he wanted to use force against a _trained FBI ex-agent_ he could overpower her, but he doesn't 3. at the HQ, his dad keeps telling him "not to keep a lady waiting" now ofc light is a psychopath and couldn't give two shits about misa, he plays the part of an obedient and well-mannered son, and this can even be seen when he loses his power: he refuses to "use" misa for the investigation there's a whole another debate about how misogynistic he is, and how that's just hidden under the surface of nice behaviour, haha light is more of an emotional abuser than a physical one
@@agarsrish Light's original motives in the anime was to rid the world of awful people and it was just a case of ego + "ends justify the means" attitude that made him act so horribly in most cases. Also, who hasn't wanted to smack an idiot after they do something stupid? I don't think it's fair to call him a psychopath just because of some of his worse traits having slight similarities to the condition. That's kind of like if the people who said shit like "Haha, I'm so OCD" actually meant it, lol
Cheap attempts at sympathy and trying to make him relatable. Problem is, Light Yagami is NOT relatable and after acquiring the Death Note, not the least bit sympathetic; especially after Naomi Misora.
When I watched the Netflix version (before I watched the anime) I thought Ryuk was a demon, bent on corrupting Light. In the anime, Ryuk is amoral and dropped the note into the human realm because he was bored. This made him a much more interesting character.
The proof L and Light are idiots. Light made wrote his victims things in Japanese; but in Japan his victims wrote things *in english* . And found an another reason to think that he is american.
Light in the anime: Makes sure no one knows about the death note by using complex contraptions that could probably kill himself if he messes up, kills anyone who gets in his way and is incredibly smart Light in the Netflix adaption: tells someone about the death note because he wants a girlfriend
If conditional deaths are possible just write down everybody‘s name and be like „If [name] does something bad they die.“ Problem fixed and you never have to worry about any one doing anything bad ever
@Kavanaugh Amyx well, I didn't change my pfp just for your reply, I didn't even know that your reply existed tbh... I just Changed it bc I wanted to... And people like you who think having mha pfp is "cringe" are the reason why mha fanbase is considered toxic... Like, is it something wrong about liking an anime? Just because the anime I like isn't the same as your liking doesn't mean it's cringe. Hope you get it.
"It also means killer in Japanese so if anyone starts looking for me they'll be on the wrong continent." Because the first thing I think when I see someone with a Japanese screen name written in Latin characters is that they must actually be Japanese.
i can understand if it was a japanese name that you can instantly tell is japanese, like Ryuzaki or Watari, but Kira is such a common name even in english speaking countries, along with its variations like Kiara, Ciara, Kirah etc. It’s like if he named himself Kim so people will think he’s Korean
Light in original Death Note : I must keep death note a secret, I can not trust Misa right away.. Light in Netflix Death Note : Hi...look I've this book that kills people...
@@sebastiansebastian370 a fair counter, however L should never have a gun in the first place, as it breaks his character. His intellect and deduction skills are his weapons.
Death Note was the first anime I ever watched, I was 12 and found it completely organically. My love for it was unbiased and something I kept completely to myself for years until I found people to share it with. It’s probably the only reason I even watch anime. When the trailer for this fucking movie came out 5 years later I didn’t even entertain the idea of giving it my time and your video proves I was right.
Because according to Ryuk's knowledge in the Netflix adaptation, he states that only the keeper of the Death Note can see him in person. To me, it's actually kinda smart. Because the Keeper doesn't have to worry about trying to hide the notebook so hard unlike the original Anime series.
@@Xxxxavvs Ok, but if you watch the show, you will see that they throw almost all of the Death Notes rules away and make the whitewashed plot super contrived. Basically, the only similarity it has to the show is the name of it.
if i remember correctly that was just his explanation to mise as to why he stays thin despite eating sweets (in that case stealing her cake) he eats sweets because he wants to and like whos gonna stop him lol
Or maybe they could just say he's hungry or maybe he suffers from a disease where he needs the most amount of calories as he can or maybe he has an eating disorder
The point of Misa is that she is so blindly in love with Light/Kira that she doesn’t care if he uses her and she is very happy to just do what he tells her
@@red_five3325 Exactly! She's crazy, a fanatic and she will do whatever she needs to make Light and/or Kira fall in love with her. (I say or because sometimes they are different, the memory wipe thingy)
i honestly don't understand why the fandom liked her in the original anime, she was stupid, a murderer and boring af There was nothing to like about her, she lost the only one who gave a shit about her so she could live simping the one guy who wanted her dead On top of being unlikable his story was dissapointing and left in a low note, and btw, she commits suicide after the events of the anime, as shown in the manga
@@rompevuevitos222 I think her character can be boring at points and I also think she was meant to be annoying. I think they were trying to show that sometimes you are so busy going after what you think you want (Light) that you loose what you really want (L/ her shinigami- I can't spell its name )
Technichally light could’ve wrote for the criminal to find the death note but differently phrased, “Finds abandoned book by shore and writes the names of reported criminals.” This is how Light worded that the bus jacking criminal unloaded all his bullets on Ryuk. He wrote that he picked up paper light dropped and shot at an otherworldly creature, that is not something he didn’t know it’s something that happened. Light did not do this in the movie just thought I’d point it out.
Death Note, at its core, is a story about justice and the morality of killing criminals. If you replace those main ideas with sexual desires instead, it doesn’t have as much impact as it had in the anime or manga.
that is why we loved light in the anime he wasnt some dumb teenager who wanted to get laid he was a smart thinker keeping his book a secret and did not have any interest in doing anything with misa infact he hated how reckless she was and did not show his notebook until misa showed hers and was willing to do anything to become a god
Thats a generous criticism. I think Death note may be one of the only anime to have potential as a live action series or movie. Action anime like Naruto would be horrible, because live action just doesn't have the same appeal as anime action. But death note was less about the action and more about the plot. The thing is that this could've been amazing, but was terrible. I'm not saying the movie is good, it made me furious beyond comprehension. I'm just saying that if done right a live action has potential
In a way, Misa and Light switched personalities in this movie. Ironically, anime Misa did skip into his house to show him her Death Note even though they've never met before. She at least had a badass Shinigami who wasn't afraid to hold Light at penpoint if she was harmed.
@@theworthysoul Well it did make her happy. She said it herself that she didn’t care if light manipulated her and that she would do literally anything for him. So at the end of the day Rem did make Misa happy.
To say Misa and Light switched personalities is complete disrespect to both Light and Misa. In anime Misa might be a sucker for Light but she's not as incompetent as Turner, in the anime Misa still have some level of genius to her even though she's not as smart as Light or L but still she knows what she is doing most of the time
I would say the best summation of this movie is that if someone read the basic facts about the show and the movie, they would literally be mirror opposites of each other. "A (live action film/animated show) set in (America/Japan) stars Light, a student who (cheats on tests for others/is top of his class), who finds a notebook with (a lot of rules/near limitless power) that can kill whoever you write the name of inside. He decides to use this notebook to (kill a few guys/purge the entire world of crime). He is pursued by L, a (highly emotional/emotionless genius) who (knows what continent Kira is on/is literally always a step ahead of Kira). Light is accompanied by (Mia/Misa) a (b!tchy fellow student/bimbo fashion model) potential love interest who (wants the power of the notebook for herself and tries to kill him/is utterly devoted to Kira's cause and does whatever he says). Light acts (very stupid/in a calculated manner) throughout the narrative, striking fear into the hearts of criminals for (like a week/7 years), before being taken down by (Mia writing his name in the book, forcing him to kill her and go into a coma for several days/an elite squad pulling a triple decoy trap on him, which he almost escapes from)."
The actor that played L is the real one. Dude got so pressed about being a black L, that he took the role so seriously to prove people wrong and make a bold statement, Studied and watched the anime so hard just to get the script and realise that he was doomed from the begining.
i think the part that really angered me most is misa’s adaptation. misa has a very unique and significant style in clothing, along with her very identifiable personality, and mia is such a basic person,, there really is no comparison.
I don't think Mia was Misa's replacement, I think Misa and Rem were going to get introduced in the sequel but because the Netflix adaptation was poorly received, fat chance of that happening now.
Omg so true. She was probably one of my favorite characters in the anime, and had a really interesting character arch. But seeing her reduced to nothing but Light's aloof and power hungry girlfriend was... disturbing.
A little extra, albeit a bit late, about Light showing Misa the notebook. Because there are more reasons that it's stupid. In the original series, when Misa shows up to his house, he doesn't trust he at all. Misa hands her notebook to him and even says he can just keep it if he wanted. But when it came time for Misa to touch his Death Note to see Ryuk, he wasn't even willing to do that. He made her turn around before he would touch her with his page in his wallet. He was not willing to show *anyone* his notebook, even after Misa proved that she was, in fact, the second Kira. You could say it's because he didn't want to show her it's hiding place, but it still proves the same point. Light, in the original series, did his best to plan for every outcome. He wasn't willing to show Misa his death note because he didn't want her to even have the chance to give it's location away. He wouldn't let any loose ends slide, that's why he lost in the end. All his efforts to erase all the possible leads to him made it impossible for him to escape his trapped situation. But the fact remains that he wouldn't show the book to anyone if he didn't absolutely have to, he wouldn't even let Misa know that he had a page in his wallet.
I'm glad the actress for Mia went on to act in a much better Netflix show. MAID. It's really good and you can really see the bandwidth of her talent if she's given a better script.
To be fair, I think the design is pretty good It’s looks like the original but has enough differences to set itself apart That combined with Willem Dafoe, I really don’t have any complaints for Ryuk here
cause he's black. Light is the worse part of this movie. Idk how L is. L did well in the first half. Then the script literally made him a crazy mes where all he did was act on emotions. Even the house scene I was yelling. L the girl is going to take the book. Bro come on. L your way smarter than that. I mean you deduce the bitch is from seattle. Not only that the father was a complete idiot. But fuck all that. L was annoying? Light literally gets a book one day. Screamed like a little bitch. Brings the book in the next day and reads it while everyone was playing basketball i think. Then the girl who was "Semi" interested in him for some unknown reason asks him what he's reading and he decides to hide then. Then he was like "wait I can probably fuck this chick" so he tell her what the book does and kill someone is a "spectacular" way to show her the new power he has. So now they are killing and fucking and he's like. Well now I get call myself Kira so people might think he japanese. But the mistake he made in the beginning was that he killed someone in seattle to impress a god damn chick he wanted to fuck. So it wasn't that hard for L to deduced that Light might be Kira. The most irritating part was the father anyways but lets continue the bs. The girl basically manipulated this whole shit and he's thinking it was the shinigami the whole time. Then he realizes oh shit. It was mia he is forced to take what he needs in action. Here is the thing though. If the book manipulates the event that happens, sucking out someone free will. How in the fuck do Light have the free will to come up with that plan. And he thought of that plan in like 5 mins. Not only that. The page that was torn out says. He would die from a heart attack. That was it. That mean Light should of probably just died from a heart attack. If not are we suppose to believe she wrote everything on one page of the book and wrote kira dies from a heart stop beating on another. If so then he couldn't come up with the plan via manipulation. But no fuck logic. I mean. Why is L black? Isn't he asian? I mean come on. L is annoying. He's black too. and he's annoying. I like Light because he's smart and he's white.... I hate retarded people.
Light meets Ryuk in the anime: Oh shit... I expected you. Light meets Ryuk in the movie: AAAAAAHHHHHHAAAAAASSGHHHHIIIIITTTTAAAAAAAAAAWAAAAAHHHHHEEEEELLLPPMMMMEEEE
@@blazesonica6610 So if a demon came into your room in the middle of the night you wouldn't be freaking the fuck out? Most people with a sense of self preservation would fling themselves out the nearest window.
In the anime, Misa had a better introduction and came later in the series, but Mia was like "ayo bitch its me". Misa was also interesting and loved Light much more.
The source material also explains Misa’s desire to kill; she idolized Kira after he killed the man who got away with murdering her family. This meant that Kira’s idea of justice aligned with her own, so she felt connected to him. Having a Death Note was her opportunity to get Kira to notice her. On the other hand, Mia in this movie is never given a backstory. We know that she has a raging murder boner, wants the power of the Death Note all to herself, and will kill nearly anyone including her boyfriend and his father. But we never know how she ended up that way.
Cranberry Why do you think so . She didn't really appear much . Plus her entire character is "I'm gonna do anything to protect my dear Misa in honour of a friend" . She was just there to move the story along . Her relationship with Misa wasn't interesting either and it was rendered irrelevant by the end of the series because Misa lost all memory she had with Rem.
Technically in the show, L does explain that the reason he eats so much candy and sweets is because he burns off a lot of calories by using his brain too hard.
@Tim Vaughn. And not to mention that candies and sweets are a part of sugar rush, which make a perfect replacement for caffeine. This video that explains sweets doesn't make people wake up is wrong.
My dad is the reason I got into anime. He’s only watched the Death Note movie and not the actual anime. I told him he NEEDS to watch it just because of how much of a disservice this movie is to the masterpiece that is the anime.
They changed the best part. There's on scene in the anime where watari dies and L's last word to him is "Watari?" Spoken less in a normal tone and more as a scared kid who's terrified for his father.
That was a good scene. I really respected both L and Watari. Watari hit that "burn" switch to safeguard the data immediately. A professional to the end.
@Ivan Grimmi I agree Ivan, I looked it up and it turns out L says ''Watari" in the dub and I knew it in the Sub so I agree that her nerd card should be revoked.
They literally had the perfect actor for Ryuk, and a phenomenal story and they somehow created hot, sweaty corn filled Diarrhea from it. I will never understand how Hollywood consistently does this with anime movies. It CAN’T be that difficult to stay close to the anime while changing little things here and there and expanding on some stuff. It can’t be that hard to make a halfway decent adaptation. But for some reason when it comes to video games and anime Hollywood just goes brain dead.
The dumb people in this universe just don’t have a brain, literally, dumb people in this universe are just corpses that are still breathing and alive, yet can’t function at all.
This is Light’s punishment. Instead of going to hell he became a Netflix adaptation
@Jan Michael Vincent you. You killed the joke. YOU MONSTER

That's just a Sin to a Man
And a good character
Unironically the only reason I even bothered to finish the movie in the first place.
Doesnt he voice Ryuk in the dub anyway?
I don't understand how Ryuk can be the only part of live action adaptation of Death Note that kinda works.
Like, that's the one part where live action imo had permission to fail. That's the one thing they then decided to actually make an effort at.
The sad part is that the actor of L actually watched/read Death Note and got familiar with L’s character. When he got the script he was disappointed but played the character they gave him
The CrimsonFox that’s actually pretty sad
That’s sad. He probably warned them too. The director should be ashamed of himself.
even sadder is tha, while the script kept tonaly true to the character, the actor did a great job portraing L. and then the 3rd act happened

If “Watari” works in this universe Light should’ve just been able to write “L”
seems like watari is just his name lol
Linus Baltasar Hoem Hegre in the actually death note though, Rem writes his real name, Quillith Wammy
Plot twist : In the movie, since Light's last name is Turner, he's related to Timmy Turner, and Ryuk is his fairly odd parent
Ha ha ha
This is canon
Why would you say that
And L actually mr crocker if he’s not obsessed with fairies
L is just Mr. Crocker chasing fairy god parents
The painful part to me is there are so many "Death Note" stories people can tell. It doesn't have to be the battle of Light and L or N and that one kid who basically killed trump.
You could drop the Deathnote into any country in any time period with any type of character and get a wild ride. But instead we got this.
So true. Maybe a nod to the OG but you don't actually need to use it.
Bro imagine a historical drama where a person like Rasputin, Napoleon or Washington get the Death Note. Not even kidding that sounds amazing
Even the same basic story set in 2023 would work. The Death Note manga is 20 years old, the world has changed a lot in that time. I'd really like to see a modern take on the story of Kira. Things like the Internet for example played almost no role in the original Death Note (just in passing).
Yeah, fun fact, the original story was about a bullied kid who accidentally killed his bullies so he used an eraser Ryuk gave him to remove them, it then cuts to years later we see he barely uses it and only for certain people
@@SirToaster9330 not the original story, just a pitch for the concept... im sure the Kira vs L story was already in mind when it was made

Light in anime: (a brilliant, optimistic but arrogant and egoistic student with the vision of becoming the God of the perfect world with no criminals. Every step he makes has a purpose, his moves aren't aimless and he can plan pretty much 10 episodes forward. He lost because of one thing, Mikami's thinking being similar to Light's thinking
I can explain more on this if you want but I think you must be knowing what it means
Game of Thrones final season moment
Probably true
That's what happens with a lot of movies. A generic or back burner movie gets a few plot points or branding or franchise slapped on top and presented as such without being actually faithful.
As someone who has never watched/read death note, but knows some details about it through pop culture osmosis, I can agree this is probably what I would make if you asked me to adapt DN.
They didn't, actually, it was confirmed in an interview. They just read the show synopsis and some of the character's pages on Fandom Wiki
Not bad, I am now content with this movie in that light.
It is almost as if it were a parody that doesn't make clear it is one.

I mean, to be fair, Light isn't 100% accurate to the manga either. But that's mainly because his death in the anime is vastly inferior to what it's like in the manga. His manga death showed what he truly is; a pitiful, egotistical coward that isn't any better than the "criminals" he kills. The things the death note live action adaptation did right
Nothing finding something they did right is as hard as making anime real
i really missed the part of multiple shinigami and the whole “forgetting the death note exists and then it coming back to them when they touch it” plot point, that was one of my favorite little plotlines in the anime.

Everyone knows this
She always reminded me of Harley quinn honestly
It wasn't a perfect information game, or else Light wouldn't have made it long enough to even temporarily "win"
i agree with this analysis so much! it's the like movie directors wanted light to be seen as the underdog finally getting his claim to fame, while the original light was the top dog. he was cool, smart, popular, the exact opposite of light turner. the movie directors butchered light's character and everything he stood for lol tumblr has a post that analyses both characters flawlessly
i laughed so much at the last line. yeah light turner would probably be THAT guy who shoots but there's a debate to had there. would the original light shoot up a school? (if they made him white, they could have channeled his anger and put that line in the script, that he's a genius who's so bored of life that he may shoot up a school just for the kicks (if they made turner as smart as yagami, he would be aware of his privilege as a white man, and maybe that would have been an interesting political statement? since the directors did intend to make a racial point, imo))
i think that even though light may have the intelligence or even motivation to pull something like that, his character is shown as "wants to commit violence, but is too well-behaved/held back by society to do so".
case in point: 1. he wants to hit misa, but he doesn't actually do it (because he wants her to like him to use her) 2. with naomi misora, wants to use force to extract her real name, but doesn't do so (doesn't want to cause a scene) which leads us to believe that light is confident that if he wanted to use force against a _trained FBI ex-agent_ he could overpower her, but he doesn't
3. at the HQ, his dad keeps telling him "not to keep a lady waiting" now ofc light is a psychopath and couldn't give two shits about misa, he plays the part of an obedient and well-mannered son, and this can even be seen when he loses his power: he refuses to "use" misa for the investigation
there's a whole another debate about how misogynistic he is, and how that's just hidden under the surface of nice behaviour, haha light is more of an emotional abuser than a physical one
@@agarsrish Light's original motives in the anime was to rid the world of awful people and it was just a case of ego + "ends justify the means" attitude that made him act so horribly in most cases. Also, who hasn't wanted to smack an idiot after they do something stupid? Death Note was the first anime I ever watched, I was 12 and found it completely organically. My love for it was unbiased and something I kept completely to myself for years until I found people to share it with. It’s probably the only reason I even watch anime. Yeah, I thought that too.
Because according to Ryuk's knowledge in the Netflix adaptation, he states that only the keeper of the Death Note can see him in person. To me, it's actually kinda smart. Because the Keeper doesn't have to worry about trying to hide the notebook so hard unlike the original Anime series.

Haha. You are being generous in your criticism. This shit had a lot more problems besides that.
That one more reason that this movie is so terribly different from the manga and anime. In the manga and anime, light is a genius
@@clunkclink9484 EXACTLY!
I know they made him such an wimpy idiot in this movie
maybe that's why they switched his last name to turner, as in "turning off the light"
In a way, Misa and Light switched personalities in this movie. Ironically, anime Misa did skip into his house to show him her Death Note even though they've never met before. She at least had a badass Shinigami who wasn't afraid to hold Light at penpoint if she was harmed.
RIP Rem, really wasted her life killing the people trying to stop the guy that was using Misa, just because she thought it’d make her happy
@@theworthysoul Well it did make her happy. She said it herself that she didn’t care if light manipulated her and that she would do literally anything for him. So at the end of the day Rem did make Misa happy.
@@TragicDestrucTt Aaaand in the end, it was all for nothing since after Light died, Misa apparently killed herself.
At PENPOINT 10/10
Light acts (very stupid/in a calculated manner) throughout the narrative, striking fear into the hearts of criminals for (like a week/7 years), before being taken down by (Mia writing his name in the book, forcing him to kill her and go into a coma for several days/an elite squad pulling a triple decoy trap on him, which he almost escapes from)."

i think the part that really angered me most is misa’s adaptation. misa has a very unique and significant style in clothing, along with her very identifiable personality, and mia is such a basic person,, there really is no comparison.
Ikr
It’s the same with L. They messed up the aesthetics of the characters so badly
But seeing her reduced to nothing but Light's aloof and power hungry girlfriend was... disturbing.
And she had more of Light's personality torwards the end of the movie I was like "Wtf?"
Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is the only saving grace

being a crybaby?
what? L was straight up the worst part and most annyoing character in the movie. ALso, why tf is he black?
cause he's black.

Why do you think so .
