icing on the cake is, the prosthetic and makeup team (60 people) aren't even included in the credits. they didn't credit 60 makeup artists on their FANTASY movie. that's so shitty.
Wow! That is just a whole new level of pure scumbaggery at it's finest. Like seriously. This is the type of pure assholery I'd expect from People like The Paul Brothers (Logan and Jake). Paris Hilton. Or Doug And Rob Walker. I least just hope the makeup team was at least paid for their hard work on this project. And I would like to thank Netflix and their craptastic line of films like Bright for giving me more reasons to not have a Netflix account (Physical Media for life).
What made me mad is that they show us a FUCKING DRAGON, half way through the movie, flying over the city. Then we never see it again. Then why show us the dragon. Are they just adding more elements to try to make the movie better, because it is just angering me even more.
For real god dammit. It's like showing us a Shotgun hanging on the wall in the first act. And never letting it go off by the third. Feels like getting cucked by bad writing 😭
They had to put in a dragon because fantasies have dragons; so a dragon has to be in the fantasy thing. And the reason why it never serves any purpose in the film is because they are bad at writing and don't understand what a Checkhov's Gun is.
Did anyone else find it really odd that Will Smith killed a fairy at the beginning and joked about it we're supposed to relate to him for the rest of the film?
The difference between the DC universe and our universe is that in DC earth is the center of the multiverse. Shrek is our center of the multiverse. That’s why Bright has a Shrek joke. Because dead memes
chris rucker People just say dumb things. It’s almost as if they had no budget left over for special affects, high level actors, or make up. They just spent it all on will.
Why spend it on a celeb that can't act? Answer: because the drones will see it's a name they recognize and watch it anyway. Will was a decent actor now but then he got it into his head that he was this big badass hero guy and had been playing that persona in EVERY movie regardless of whether it fit
The whole movie is like a rough draft of writing a racism alagory in a private high school lit class, but the author left Bad Boys on in the background while doing his homework
Dang. How someone can spend so much time, effort and money into a project and get reduced to a highschool lit class. Dang Trenton. How would you suggest someone who wants to write a story with racism to write about it?
my biggest issue with this movie is that there's magic but somehow everything is exactly the same science/medicine/technology wise. how tf is that possible ?
Well since brights were rare and so were wands I'm assuming people had to find a way to defend themselves or come up with inventions of other ways besides using magic
I don't know why it'd never hit me until just now, but... why are Elves so obsessed with bringing back the Dark Lord, anyway? They're already the richest, most privileged race in the world, and they managed to avoid any bad consequences from the war by putting all the blame on the Orcs. They have it great. Do they really need to go to that length?
Adding to that On how the worldbuilding makes no sense Why are the elfs rich? Didnt they lose the war? When has the losing side of any war been like What ever dude i got stacks also how the fuck did they lose the war when so many of them can use war crime wands
I thought the same thing watching the movie. Like they clearly rule this world and are the dominant species on the planet. Why would they bother resurrecting some evil overlord who will likely want to rule them all?
"First orc bright" Confirmed for not paying attention to the film Jirak, whom Jakoby cites, was the first Bright... and also an orc. And, no, making the orc who cited the first orc Bright and compared their adventures to one another would have been campy and predictable. And, also, generic in having history repeat itself. And yet you find this more entertaining and original... Then again, we've confirmed you didn't pay attention to the film's own established lore.
@@codybarlik4524 And imagine someone being let down by a movie because a super cliched plot element was "missed" when the movie states it already happened millennia ago. It's kinda like watch Avengers: Infinity War and being upset that Captain America wasn't in the movie.
A plot summary of the OG script leaked and it makes so much more sense. Example: Elf lady doesn't talk because she was a child in the OG story. Possibly changed because David A wanted to add a gunfight in a strip club.
Damn, well let me tell you how from 17-19 people kept trying to use the Alamo as a way to shit talk just cause I was Mexican, so maybe the racists you've encountered are just not that well educated...
IT WOULD STILL HAVE SHIT WORLD BUILDING AND BAD ACTING AND THO PEOPLE SAID THAT SUICIDE SQUAD WOULD'VE BEEN PERFECT WITH NO PROBLEMS IF IT JUST HAD AN R RATING WHY DO PEOPLE THINK REALLY SIMPLE 1 STEP SOLUTIONS INSTANTLY MAKE SHITTY MOVIES GOOD
Fionn Connor Changing it from a movie to a show is not a one step change. Also, while you are right about it not solving the acting, it would give the writers more room and time to implement the world building and lore. Theoretically.
@@GummyDinosaursify if Bright is part of the WillSmithCinematicUniverse.. does that mean that there was an alien invasion in the fantasy world too at some point? maybe Officer Will was a pilot before becoming a cop! and did he become a MIB agent after the Independence Day invasion? hmm
gotenksta it’s bad writing because they had to write it in a way that would work for a movie when a storyline like that needs much more time than a movie can offer to be fully developed. I agree that there were some ententes of flat out bad writing but for the most part it was due to the fact that for a fantasy story like that, things usually need ample amounts of time to explain and with a show they get a whole lot more time to piece the backstory together over the course of the show even if they start out with a pretty bad idea of what that backstory is going to be.
Not only is the Dark Lord an Elf, but the first Bright, Jirak, who united the nine races against the Dark Lord was an Orc. And yet orcs are the hated ones and elves are the ones on top. How does the prejudice and racism works in this world?!
I imagine it's because the elves in power did a lot of historical revision to cover up the fact that the darklord was an elf, and that Jiraak even existed-- and then the prejudice took hold against the orcs, and all their claims that the documented history is a lie is seen as, essentially, fake news. This movie needed, among other things, a lot of fleshing out to be good.
I actually had an idea of a true history of the Dark Lord and the Orcs' service to him. The Dark Lord is actually the Emperor of the Elves who attempted to conquer the world and enforce elven supremacy, and the reason the orcs sided with him is because in reality the orcs are an enslaved race that are forced to fight the elves' wars. Jiraak was an orc slave who was also the descendant of one of the last great Orc khans that fell to elven conquest, and Jiraak led a resistance force against the Elf Emperor that was later joined by an alliance of the Nine races, including Elves that decide to turn on the Emperor and side with the alliance. But then history was revised by those same high born elves to distance themselves from what is now called the Dark Lord, and with it the responsibility for the great war.
prejudice/racism are socieconomic constructs, they don't have to make historical sense. Black people were never minions to an magical evil overlord and they still suffer discrimination to this day.
While that is true in the real world, it is specifically stated in the movie that the prejudice exists because they orcs chose to side with the dark lord-- which is why I suggested the revisionist agenda.
I think i've expressed myself poorly, what i meant to say is that prejudice/raicsm do not have to have a "justification" to exist (as in they are not karmic ) but are much rather fabricated by the narratives of those within power so they can best exploit the victims of said prejudice/discrimination.
Remember that the old drunk homeless wizard man knew that Will Smith was “blessed”, this proves that people are able to find brights without giving random people the wand.
That's not a reasonable assumption. Is "Faerie Lives Matter" a real slogan in this universe, even though faeries are feral animals? It could have been a real person if there was any worldbuilding in this movie, but there isn't. You're putting more effort into writing than anyone creating the movie.
@@CanIHasThisName He was attempting comedy. I think the best part is that you think Christianity wouldnt just incorporate Orcs, Magic and Elves into their religon.
I would argue they already did make a better version of this movie. Go watch "Alien Nation" with Mandy Patinkin and James Caan. They do a lot of the exact same things but it's done a world better.
@@colakelvins Zootopia at least has the excuse of being for kids. As a vague, generic "racism bad" film, I'm sure children would get the message, and symbolism aside it's a solidly crafted film. "Bright" is meant to be for adults.
As a elven supremacist myself I dont see how Orcs are accurately depicted as savages and humans as unorganized rabble Of course elves as beautiful and perfect is entirely accurate
This story wasn’t meant for a movie, too much lore to stuff into one movie. they should have made a mini series or something. They didn’t explain the lore enough in this one movie
The only "legitimate" reason I can think that all these guys keep trying to use the wand is that they believe they may be the blessed human who can use it.....? And they're so desperate to have power that they're willing to risk dying to know that they are blessed. But that's all I got. This movie is a dumpster fire.
Bright is a wonderful concept as a story, kind of like a Shadowrun-esque world, but as a movie it fails because it tries to jam so much into so little time. Make this into a series ala Alien Nation and you have a near instant hit.
I know you posted this years ago, but yeah. I’m not saying the Alien Nation series was 100% perfect, but everything that was sort of okay in Bright was done ten times better in Alien Nation. George regularly confronted the challenge of pursuing and investigating people from his own minority community, and sometimes it made him a better detective because he understood them and occasionally it made him a worse detective because he had his own blind spots because of his culture, like everybody does. I mean, sheerly the fact that George is the first Newcomer detective but not the only Newcomer working at the police station (because of Albert as the custodian) gave them so many more opportunities to show that Tenctonese culture and attitudes aren’t monolithic. Or how Buck developed this strong resistance to cultural assimilation, and he doesn’t consider his dad’s role in applying human law to Newcomers as a good thing. I’m not sure Alien Nation should necessarily be rebooted, but Bright definitely lowered the odds of that happening by taking the same premise and doing it so poorly.
@@TheAmericanPrometheus goddamn you must think youre clever for knowing what tribalism is. When a political party supports tax cuts for the richest people they are bad to put it simply for someone like you.

This universe has a lot of potential but they packaged it in such a boring way. I wanna see the Alamo in this world. I wanna see the Napoleonic Wars in this world. I wanna see the Cold War in this world. I don’t wanna see a Zootopia rip off.
The irony here is that, since bright isn't a comedy, it's supposed to be an action cop fantasy film or whatever the fuck it's genre is, it's so bad that it's funny and therefore, calling it a comedy is not only a smart insult but the insult is also sarcastic as it's mocking the movie for being so bad it's funny.
I fucking wish they had pulled this concept off, it would've been so cool to see that universe's ideas become popularized. Maybe the comics are better, I should try them out.
If you like this premise, play Telltale studio's Wolf Among Us. It details the life of popular fairy tale figures in a modern setting as a murder mystery game.
Saga is a pretty good example of a combo of fantasy/real world universe. Personally, some points are starting to derail for me, but the worldbuilding is pretty strong. (And the art is amazing). You should give it a try 👍
Not only is that Shrek comment distracting due to the fairy talel stuff but it's also distracting that this is the second Will Smith movie to reference Shrek. How many universes feature Will Smith AND Shrek?
It's still pretty bad writing to go throwing information at the viewer for no reason. We do not need to know that they need three wands to do that because it isn't relevant to the story it is telling. This is one of the first things you are taught if you want to be a writer, don't go telling the audience about things that they don't need to know, by saying they need three wands to resurrect the dark lord then the audience will be waiting for it to happen. If it doesn't happen and isn't addressed for the rest of the movie then it only confuses and disappoints the audience by not having any payoff.
But it makes sense to have this information. It tells us why it is extremely important to keep it away from the magic using terrorists, yet as powerful as it is it isn't enough on its own to put the evil plan (tm) in motion which is why it wasn't used to actually terrorize yet.
DMB so taking that as a hypothetical in that they killed the dark lord extra hard. Jacobi is shot with a sniper and is resurrected with one wand....does that mean they used a magical nuke to kill the dark lord. If so that’d be pretty funny
I mean, it's possible that the amount of magical energy required to resurrect an entity could be directly proportional to the strength of the entity itself.
@@bennyhoward1391 Well, the battle against him was probably way more intense, so he ended up getting disintegrated or getting his spirit sealed somewhere, I don't know, it's likely something the writers would have touched upon if this thing got a sequel. Not to mention, his death happened a shitton of years before the events of the show, so his body wouldn't exactly still be around, especially if he died in a magical battel, while Jacobi just died on the spot and got resurrected immediately after.
Would you really expect a guy called "The Dark Lord" to be the same as an orc or a human? I mean he obviously was immensely powerful and they had to have a big battle to defeat him, I'd imagine to bring him back you'd have to do something pretty big, whereas the lives of orcs and humans are minuscule by comparison and would be relatively easy to bring back in comparison as well. You didn't really think that through did ya.
For me the biggest issue is that it literally felt like scenes or entire plot lines missing. Like?? No Dark Lord resurrected. No issue with the elves being basically the Capitol from the Hunger Games? Orcs were shown to be super strong but nothing came of that? Jacobi saved that kid but it didn't even help him in the end? Elves have sharp teeth idk I thought they should have bit someone? The sword? The Shield of Light? The Magic Task Force? ITS THIER JOB TO COLLECT WANDS AND JACOBIS LIKE WE FOUND A WAND AND THEN WILL SMITH IS LIKE "no don't listen to him" and the maGIC ASK FORCE IS LIKE "ok lol let's not investigate this further even though it's our ONE JOB. Speaking of the Magic Task Force the elf guy on it seemed to have real history and beef w/ the evil elf lady but it's never addressed again? When Jacobi goes to save Will Smith he's trapped behind a metal fence and debris and will smith is buried under rubble or some shit and there's fire everywhere and it shows Jacobi looking stressed/scared and then the next thing u know Will Smith is out of the fire!!! UOW THE FUCK DID THAT HAPPEN JACOBI COULDNT GET YO HIM WHAT THE FUThere was a scene where the orc mob boss was like "WHERE IS THE WAND?!" And they were like "WHAT WAND?" And then the orc monsters immediately went to open the bag with Tika and looked up horrified that the wand wasn't there but why would they expect it to be there Will Smith hasn't given you SHIT so why would you be horrified it's not on his person why the fuck does it feel like an entire confession scene about the wand's whereabouts was just CUT why are there so many plot threads that just go nowhere why diOK AND THEN!! Then they all bow down to Jacobi and are like "THE PROPHECY" and I'm like "oh shit are they gonna like....flip the script...like Jacobi just Jesused his was into being alive again like ...NO BITCH!! Nothing came of it! What the fuck was that about then?? I don't understa
Sarf Will smith was like “no dont listen” because they were verbally forging the report of what happened(Hence Will Smith being free in spite of killing 4 cops) . I agree with everything else you said though
Elijah Nakumura - I get WHY he said it, but the Magic Task Force shouldn't have listened to him! If I'm on a task force who's SOLE PURPOSE is to get Magic Wands, then that's what I'll do! This cop starts blanking about how he just went on a crazy chase for a wand, and talks about how he was RAISED FROM THE DEAD and about how is FRIEND IS A BRIGHT-- I might wanna investigate a liiiiiitle bit. Will Smith is just like "nah don't worry it was just a run in with some gangsters" AFTER Jacobi told this crazy story. Why did the elf investigator just ignore everything Jacobi said. It's a magical atomic bomb! Their stories didn't add up and one was about a MAGIC. ATOMIC. BOMB. and it's my ONE. JOB. to get that wand. AND!! The elf dude KNOWS there is a wand in the equation! He saw the crazy elf lady fused with the wall and he RECOGNIZED IT as the work of the evil elves and the head evil elf lady who he KNOWS is a Bright and he KNOWS has a wand. He's been tracking this wand the whole movie! And he knows these guys were at least in close proximity with it! And he just leaves it without even INTERROGATING THEM SEPARATELY IM SORRY IM JUST SO MAD HE HAD ONE!! ONE JOB!! He knows there is a wand and he's not going shit!!!! You could argue that Will Smith was working with the Magic Task Force behind the scenes or smith but that was never established and made incredibly vague and the Magic Task Force has NO reason to trust these cops. NONE. Even if they were like "ok we're gonna shape this story this way" and the Magic Task Force was like "lol ok let's do it" that makes no sense! For that to happen they would have had to TAKE this Cop's word that the wand was destroyed!! If someone came up to me, the Magic FBI, and was like "yeah I had a wand but it's destroyed lmao sorry" id be SUSPICIOUS to say the least. SO!! We are left with 2 options: 1) FBI Elf just decided not to look into the wand at all bc he's a fuckin idiot 2) FBI Elf DID look into the wand offscreen and determined that these 2 cops are 100% trustworthy and believes them that it was destroyed. Either way it don't make no sense
Sarf they did get the wand dude, it's shown in the previous scene with men in hazmat suits and a special container. They just want a clean report for the public, the same they use in the next scene when the dead dirty cops are commemorated as heroes.
Juboi -- really? Sorry I guess fucking blacked out for the last 20 min of the movie. Seems prettttyyyyy shitty to keep an Atomic Bomb from the public tho🤷♀️
Sarf I mean its common knowledge that it exists. But the location, specifics etc doesnt need to be public info. Just like nukes in real life. Look at the rat race that instantly happened based off of a rumor that a wand was around.
Lindsey Ellis made a video about this movie too. So two of my favorite channels make a video on why this movie is bad and I've realized this movie indirectly brought me a lot of entertainment.
@@JessesanMan I never said it was good movie, I just said that I liked it, it was alright at best but I still liked the movie and what does your opinion have to do with mine?
Something you forgot to mention is that 90% of the movie is at night or in a dark place. You can barely see a lot of what is happening aside from explosions and light flares.
Will smith is to acting what most voice actors are to voice acting. He doesn't play a character, he just plays himself and that's supposed to be the character.
You claim that the presence of fantasy "races" in this world wouldn't negate racism between humans in the society depicted in this world, but theres a good chance it actually would. For example, in the US there is little differentiation between white people of different ethnicities now, but when the US was far less diverse prejudice between different European ethnicities was a rampant problem. The more homogenous a society is the more minute differences are acknowledged and used as the basis for discrimination. This is something we see today in East Asian societies which are highly homogenous, and as a result retain a high degree of ethnocentrism. In a society like that depicted in the film in which there are essentially various other species of intelligent beings sharing the same living space the differences between the different races of humans would likely be seen as too small to be acknowledgeable.
But racism still exists. Just because US doesn't hate the irish as much any more doesn't mean racism has been eliminated. Just because some people really hate black people, doesn't mean they're totally okay with every other race. You can be prejudice against more than one thing at a time. US may be more accepting of their white these days, but many parts of Europe still have clear distinctions between whites from various places. And honestly, just because somewhere displays a homogeneous society, doesn't mean it's not racist, east asia has pleeeeenty of racism, just like every other country out there. If an alien race suddenly showed up tomorrow and integrated itself into society, do you truly believe all racism between humans would vanish? Over generations it may become less of an issue as the racist fucks amongst us switch their hate elsewhere, but I doubt it would completely vanish. If we've not managed, as a planet, to stamp out racism after thousands and thousands of years of civilisation, I can't see it magically vanishing in a few generations just because something new came along.
Spam good job of reorganizing his point. He didn't argue that racism doesn't exist between humans in this world, just that it took a backseat to the more obvious species based racism. And yeah, the point about America was a great one, because we're talking racism in America. The entire movie is in and about America, so of course America's racism is what we're referencing here. Also your point about East Asia, was his point about East Asia. That them being a homogeneous society means that they have to go much deeper for differences to be bias against. Meanwhile, in America where we have a ton more ethnic diversity, the differences discriminated against aren't as subtle.
ArcaneAudio All of which makes sense, I agree! But then the movie mentions Mexicans still being disliked because of the Alamo. So if the Alamo did happen between human races, what other specifically human things happened? Was America still founded on the manipulation of Native Americans? Were they entirely human? Orcs? Elves? A mix? Who founded America? I'm not arguing this point for general modern day fantasies, it's more this movie in particular. It does a poor job of setting up the world build and racism point in general beyond "orc bad". You can't just say "imagine a world exactly like ours, but with orcs and elves too" because the world as we know it would be different, and not exactly like ours. It's the same issue seen with elves. If they seemingly have all the money and power, why isn't there any display of dislike for them? Surely humans and orcs would would have some level of distrust or jealousy towards them. It'd be more accurate to depict "elf district" as being a majority of rich elves, but also having successful humans and orcs too, if we're truly going to go by real world settings. As a black person in the US, it's much more difficult to get into the high society but not impossible, so the concept that the 1% is entirely elves just seems like it'd create more issues than it does in the film.
Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if all of those were ad-libbed or added late, I hear the fairy lives don't matter was an ad-lib too, which was a cringey moment. To be fair to the ad-libbing though, even without it all, the world building was poorly done and left more questions than gave answers. You compare this to something like LotR or Witcher series (granted they're medieval fantasies) and you can see what good world building and bad ones are like. It's hard to fit it into 90mins of movie, but maybe that's what they should have focuses on instead of everyone chasing a wand around for it. A single movie establishing the world would have been way more interesting to me, getting to see the diversity and the issues and unrest it all causes.
19:23 "Anyway so Taako decides to be nice..." AN ADVENTURE ZONE REFERENCE? I actually was not expecting that holy shit, I already subscribed but I would have definitely subscribed right then
honestly though, i don't think the absense of racism among humans is TOTAL bullshit, if we lived along side entirely different humanoid species, different races wouldn't be as "bad", not saying we'd be singing kumbaia and shit, but it wouldn't be so weird for the humans to kind of "unite" against ogres and fairies, especially if they lived in this fantasy setting for like 2000 years and more. BUT the execution is total bullshit, first off, why aren't humans being oppressed by fairies as well? from what i understand they should be the most bestest and powerful race in this universe, and even if they are not the absolute best, they're still the richest and most powerful, it would only be logical that in an enviroment like that, humans would be discriminated against as well, it also bugs me how every human hates ogres except for Will Smith, every ogre is a street thug, except for the ogre cop and all fairies are just "best race" in everything they do, how did the ogre became a cop in the first place if everyone hates him? why aren't there fairy cops?
not trying to sound racist, but if you go to some places, most street thugs are black, so that could be just a district where the orgthugs live... but still, we haven't seen a ghetto with black people or white people for that matter... could be just coincidence or an universe that is held together by some cheap duck tape
It´s more than that. You can´t tell me that all these races live 2000 years toghether and everyone is just ok with how it is. Why would the orcs be like:"Hm, yes, its bad and stuff but why change something?" Wouldn´t they....build there own city or roit or something like that. It doesn´t seem realistic that there are 2000 years of discrimination and you are somewhat ok with it.
Let's not forget that the wand supposedly "grants wishes" but Tika says she just started training/ only knows a few words, so you have to know spells to use it. She even has to tell will smith the word for fire at the end so he can use it. Also apparently one of the few words (Spells???) she knows is resurrection. Is resurrection a beginner spell where she comes from? WTF!?
Mute Wolf did you miss the part where she nearly fucking died after resurrecting him? Don’t think that’s supposed to happen if you’re an experienced wielder
BrickTheWorld maybe just don’t take everything that’s said in a movie literally word for word like a simple minded idiot? If the wand cast spells then the phrase “grants wishes” obviously means one can cast a certain spell to grant their desired wish i.e it was her wish to bring him back to life so she cast a resurrection spell, and whoopty fucking do he’s back wish granted
You really misinterpreted jakoby’s statement. It was an over exaggerated comparison with the Wand stating that it was ‘like a nuclear weapon that grants wishes’ but wasn’t being literal about it.
I liked it but I also agree with most of your nitpicks. It's not a great movie (barely even a good one), but in a year where we got the live action Ghost in the Shell, Justice League, and the Book of Henry the critics calling Bright the worst of 2017 doesn't add up. I think the correct response from everyone should have just been a collective shrug of the shoulders.
I like how when ONE critic calls it the worst movie of the year that means every critic is calling it the worst movie of the year. I’ve read and seen many reviews for this movie and only one called it the worst film of the year.
16:04 I feel like what Bright does wrong here, Watchmen does right. In the original Watchmen comic, because heroes are real comics about pirates are made instead of superhero comics.

I thought this was gonna be a "here is a three part thesis statement detailing the major overriding flaws in this movie" type video but no, it's a "literally every minute of this is painfully dumb and I sat through it so you're gonna hear about it" type video and I love it
Suley&Chinny it was confusing only if you engage in mindless nitpicks. it's not for those that pay attention to the actual story being told. it's at or above the quality of a marvel movie for instance yet marvel gets a pass and this doesn't. the complaints are bullshit. "omg shrek is in this movie!!" ... lol utter nonsense complaints
ThoughtGaze What are you on about? This movie is not on the level of quality that Marvel movies are. But since I’m open minded I want one good reason that this movie is just as good, or better, than Marvel movies that came out the same year. Tell me.
Wait a minute, how did he shave his tusks? Tusks aren't hair, they're bone, they insert directly into his skull. Was "shave" the actual term they use in the movie?
Personally I enjoyed this movie. To clarify, I enjoyed the concept and the world it potentially offered. Did it deliver on being an awesome future/modern fantasy focusing on a buddy cop movie running afoul of corruption and throwing magic and shit into it? Maybe not entirely. Did it make me want to see more in this setting? Yes.
Additionally, the premise itself and just dropping you in was what i felt respected the viewers intelligence, we didn't need a fucking narrator to spoon feed us EVERYTHING.
Exactly the whole idea was awesome and had so much potential and with a better director and screenplay writer it could have been the movie of the year.
it was meant as just a fun watch. not as a serious movie in any way. this "review" is from a guy who looks way too deep into things and reviews superhero movies/comics, wich means he is probably way too serious about everything that is not real
"it was meant as just a fun watch. not as a serious movie in any way." The screenwriter literally said he wanted this to be his Lord of the Rings. So... uh.. nah.
David Ayer did not direct Training Day. He wrote the script. Training Day's director was Antoine Fuqua, who also directed The Magnificent Seven and The Equalizer, before that. All of them starring Denzel. Pretty good to just good movies, imho. But yeah, David Ayer as a director, so far? Kinda yucky, to say the least.
The "reason" that they keep trying to protect the wand and don't give it up in the movie is because it would be worth like a billion dollars to a regular person if they sold it to the right bidder and could potentially be extremely dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. Still though, I definitely feel you, this was a goofy movie.
Plus it would be a good idea to not give it to a person just on the off chance they are actually a Bright and can use it. Better safe than sorry, in that case. You only get unlucky once, though yeah, the value alone would be bad enough if someone got one.
@@mr.enrike2564 The way they do that is by making a barter with somebody who can do that for them, in exchange the "able" person gets the wand. There is it that difficult to understand??!
I thought it was fine considering the over the top scope of the plot, that being said it would likely have been better if told over a 5-10 episode series.
and even zootopia didnt do it much better despite it doing this better than bright. the problem with these kinds of people making racism allegories is that they literally boil down racism to black and white and then take all the context, nuance, and history of racism and toss in the garbage just to make it easier to just get the simple message that "racism is bad" across.
thats not really a choice you get to make. if its something about a race that the writer wants to comment on or send a message, then the writer should have that right to do so you're right to just not watch it. The problem with these stories is poor execution, but that doenst mean it can't be done right. Racism in many stories can also help world build as it can show the mistreatment of a certain group of people by another group of people based on prejudice. If every story was just happy land where everyone held hands and sang songs it would be pretty boring. The best part about racism in stories is when the different groups set there differences aside and learn to get along even if only temporary or just a single step forward. If they didn't do it right with a movie, then I highly doubt they can make a good series.
gotenksta i disagree
@@marmarfr
It's just that it's not a problem about pacing or the time to develop the story, it's just bad writing.
gotenksta it’s bad writing because they had to write it in a way that would work for a movie when a storyline like that needs much more time than a movie can offer to be fully developed.

I fucking loved Alien Nation. Never forget they liked curdled/soured milk. lol
I agree. This kind of story, something this massive and wide reaching needs more time to fill in the blanks :=)

To be fair, the three wands thing was probably a set up for a sequel.
koastrong if they made it
koastrong their actually making a sequel. They announced it not long after the film released.
I like how it’s supposed to be serious and they still say magic wands
If I could get this movie rebooted, I'd do it as a TV show and get the team who worked on The Boys to direct and write this.

I guess they killed him even harder or something, and thus they needed 3 wands.
SO!! We are left with 2 options:
1) FBI Elf just decided not to look into the wand at all bc he's a fuckin idiot
2) FBI Elf DID look into the wand offscreen and determined that these 2 cops are 100% trustworthy and believes them that it was destroyed.
Look at the rat race that instantly happened based off of a rumor that a wand was around.
if they went into detail more about the elves, and literally everything else it would probably be a good movie
Lindsey Ellis made a video about this movie too. So two of my favorite channels make a video on why this movie is bad and I've realized this movie indirectly brought me a lot of entertainment.
I liked the movie honestly Idk why it's so much hate

Something you forgot to mention is that 90% of the movie is at night or in a dark place. You can barely see a lot of what is happening aside from explosions and light flares.
Get a better T.V. lol or get your eyes checked, I have no issues seeing detail in dark movie settings.
It should’ve been a bit...BRIGHTer
Will smith is to acting what most voice actors are to voice acting. He doesn't play a character, he just plays himself and that's supposed to be the character.
But it usually works

Jkla Alkj good point. if i remember anything from 5th grade was discrimination against the irish or something and the chinese on the west coast

You knew it would happen
Flimpeen Flarmpoon What, it's true.
Flimpeen Flarmpoon I don't get what's so bad about it, it's funny.
honestly though, i don't think the absense of racism among humans is TOTAL bullshit, if we lived along side entirely different humanoid species, different races wouldn't be as "bad", not saying we'd be singing kumbaia and shit, but it wouldn't be so weird for the humans to kind of "unite" against ogres and fairies, especially if they lived in this fantasy setting for like 2000 years and more.
Gino Gatash aren’t fairies like flys in this universe?
Ok
It's Orcs not ogres
It's elves not fairies.
Your post confused me a bit because of this.
not trying to sound racist, but if you go to some places, most street thugs are black, so that could be just a district where the orgthugs live... but still, we haven't seen a ghetto with black people or white people for that matter... could be just coincidence or an universe that is held together by some cheap duck tape
i agree with this
It´s more than that.
Fun fact, "You touch my wand, and it will splatter all over the walls" is what I tell my wife in the morning, but she never seems to heed my warning
Mad 💀💀.
Everyone saying this movie had an original premise, it's just Shadowrun without the cool cyberpunk shit.
Holy fuck you're right! I picked up on the Shadowrun similarity immediately but I couldn't place what it was missing. GG man
THANK YOU!!! This movie is bullshit!
*Alien Nation
Well, the premise is that nothing about the world would be different if magic really existed and was commonly known.
What about Alien Nation?
Let's not forget that the wand supposedly "grants wishes" but Tika says she just started training/ only knows a few words, so you have to know spells to use it. She even has to tell will smith the word for fire at the end so he can use it. Also apparently one of the few words (Spells???) she knows is resurrection. Is resurrection a beginner spell where she comes from? WTF!?
Mute Wolf did you miss the part where she nearly fucking died after resurrecting him? Don’t think that’s supposed to happen if you’re an experienced wielder
Also the characters in the movie SAY it grants wishes that doesn't mean it actually does.
Right, so now everytime someone says something in a movie, I'm gonna assume they are lying...
I’ve read and seen many reviews for this movie and only one called it the worst film of the year.
teknokryptik Bye Bye Man?
I'd honestly rather watch Justice League than this film.
teknokryptik you right. It ain't the worst.

Suley&Chinny it was confusing only if you engage in mindless nitpicks. it's not for those that pay attention to the actual story being told. it's at or above the quality of a marvel movie for instance yet marvel gets a pass and this doesn't. the complaints are bullshit.
That's why it got bad reviews.
Exactly the whole idea was awesome and had so much potential and with a better director and screenplay writer it could have been the movie of the year.
it was meant as just a fun watch. not as a serious movie in any way.
this "review" is from a guy who looks way too deep into things and reviews superhero movies/comics,
wich means he is probably way too serious about everything that is not real
"it was meant as just a fun watch. not as a serious movie in any way."
The screenwriter literally said he wanted this to be his Lord of the Rings. So... uh..
Kinda yucky, to say the least.
maaan everyone forgets Fury. it wasnt Oscar worthy but it was really solid too
So he's basically hit or miss
End of watch is the best thing ayer has directed
Equalizer was poop.
Fury and End of Watch are great movies.
No that's not right. Every person that wanted to get the wand wanted to use it for their own benefit, not to sell it.
Don't bother the poster of the video is not that "bright", he would not understand that either.
@@mr.enrike2564 The way they do that is by making a barter with somebody who can do that for them, in exchange the "able" person gets the wand. There is it that difficult to understand??!
@@Tempo_Gigante you are trying to make sense of the films logic when the movie itself doesnt follow it. Stfu 🤫

Correction David Ayer only wrote Training Day he didn’t direct it, it was Antoine Fuqua who directed it. I did like Fury and End of Watch from Ayer.
Love the concept that went into the movie-inator, but a pile of garbage came out the other end.
This is the plot of zootopia
disney did it better
Zootopia was a difference in classes, not races, since they were discriminating against any meat eating race.
and even zootopia didnt do it much better despite it doing this better than bright. the problem with these kinds of people making racism allegories is that they literally boil down racism to black and white and then take all the context, nuance, and history of racism and toss in the garbage just to make it easier to just get the simple message that "racism is bad" across.
I personally think that movies should stop having racism in them period, they should just treat every race the same threw out the entire film
thats not really a choice you get to make. if its something about a race that the writer wants to comment on or send a message, then the writer should have that right to do so you're right to just not watch it.
Most fantasy and sci-fi stories have racism in them (just not real life parallels most of the time) and they do it pretty well.
it sounds like it's nitpicking, but it's really not. it's the only thing this movie ever had going for it, and it's done poorly.
